I know Donald Trump wants to send humans to the Moon and Mars while he is still President. He thinks it would be a really “cool” thing to happen while he is in office and has urged NASA to speed up their timetables. But Trump doesn’t know the half of what he is requesting. There is nothing cool about going to the Moon and Mars. It is more about sending people into a deep freeze even more perilous than Antarctica.

How do we think we can colonize the Moon or Mars when we cannot do this here on Earth in Antarctica. Today we have no permanent settlements there. So how do we think we can do this in two places even more inhospitable than the most southerly of Earth’s continents?

The Story of Our Human Presence in Antarctica

Humans first started visiting Antarctica in the late 18th century. Captain James Cook circumnavigated the continent in 1775. But it is not clear whether he ever sighted the mainland. More than likely remote islands of the Southern Ocean were mistaken for the continent. The first sightings of the Antarctic Peninsula came in 1820. The first landfall in 1821. What was the driving factor for 19th-century ships to visit the continent? Seals and whales.

For a time the search for the Magnetic South Pole motivated further exploration. In 1841 one expedition reached the Ross Ice Shelf but no landfall. After that whalers and sealers dominated human activity in proximity to the Antarctic continent. Then came exploration at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century with the race to the South Pole. Some human explorers actually attempted to winter in Antarctica and found the continent a foreboding and unforgiving place. Many died. When Scott and Amundsen made their attempts to reach the pole, there was no thought of permanent settlement, just the planting of a flag to symbolize a human achievement. The conditions these explorers had to deal with included temperatures as low as -61 Celsius (-78 Fahrenheit).

The Antarctic expeditions were accompanied by provisions and animals, dog teams for Amundsen and ponies for Scott. They could hunt seal before heading into the interior using what they slaughtered for meat and blubber, the latter serving as fuel for fire and warmth. If desperate their animal companions could be sacrificed to keep them alive. Even so, Scott’s expedition did not survive the trek. Amundsen faired better.

Expeditions followed Amundsen’s success but none attempted to settle the southern continent. In the 1920s Richard Byrd flew over the South Pole in a series of expeditions. In 1934 he established a research station that could be continuously occupied. Antarctica even became a hotbed in the global struggle between the Western democracies and Germany’s Third Reich. The latter in 1938 laid claim to a piece of the continent. But no Nazis chose to stay.

Today, residency in Antarctica varies from lows of 1,100 in winter to highs of 4,400 in summer. Humans live and work in 37 Antarctic bases with the largest population residing at McMurdo Station, a mere 250. The humans in Antarctica are not there to settle a continent. No one is planting roots that will then grow into a much larger human presence. The environment is unsustainable without an enormous resupply effort.

The Story of a Future Human Presence on the Moon or Mars

Antarctica is here on Earth where no one has to bring air to breathe or water to drink. And yet we cannot conquer its environment and settle there. So why do we think the Moon or Mars presents our species with a second Earth?

So why do we think the Moon or Mars presents our species with a second Earth?

States Pascal Lee, of NASA’s Ames Research Center, “there is an escapism to wanting to go to Mars and start anew... The issue with that particular enticing concept is — to go to what? You would need an entire infrastructure set up in advance to support people there.”

Even Robert Zubrin, President of the Mars Society, and a strong advocate for going to Mars doesn’t see colonizing the Red Planet as a second Earth to ensure our species survival. Instead, he describes Mars as a springboard for scientific and engineering innovation. Zubrin states that Mars would turn us into a spacefaring species which means “we will gain greater control over our environment... essential to our long-term survival.” So Mars will make us better stewards of Earth.

But Stephen Hawking has a different opinion. Recently he announced that our species must find a new planet to inhabit or face our potential extinction. The deadline, 100 years. Feeding into this Mars or bust mindset is not something one normally associates with Professor Hawking.

But it certainly is Elon Musk‘s mantra. Musk sees humanity at risk if we remain bound to Earth. He founded SpaceX in 2002 to make us a multi-planetary species.

Antarctica, however, shows us that the Moon and Mars are no easy answer. Katharine Hayhoe, Director of the Climate Science Center, Texas Tech University, states, “Mars is not an escape hatch for planet Earth. If we do not take action to reduce and eventually eliminate our carbon emissions, they will overwhelm human civilization as we know it, long before Mars is ready to be colonized by large numbers of people.”

Building a colony on the Moon or Mars is a thousand times more difficult and a million times more expensive than anything undertaken to date in Antarctica. So unless there is a super compelling economic reason to inhabit those two off world locales permanently, Hayhoe and many others argue that fixing Earth should be our prime directive, leaving the Moon and Mars as places like Antarctica where we can explore and do science.

NASA’s Shopping List to Sustainability for Humans on the Moon and Mars

NASA is now considering a return to the Moon in the 2020s largely driven by the new Republican administration in Washington, DC. The agency previously set a 2033 target for a crewed mission to Mars with the goal to live on the Martian surface for a few months before returning home. To achieve Mars NASA has put together a “must have” shopping list to make it possible. Here are some of NASA’s requirements:
  • Development of affordable launch systems capable of putting sufficient material into space to assemble what will be needed to get to Mars and back. The Space Launch System, prohibitively expensive, is not the best answer to this problem. SpaceX reusability applied to its heavy launch Falcon may prove to be a better choice.
  • Development of autonomous technology that can work without human supervision in advance of human arrival at the planet to build and maintain life support and other infrastructure.
This means further advances in robotics and artificial intelligence.
  • Development of space waystations as fuel depots for refueling spacecraft in transit to and from Mars. Space refueling is being tested on the International Space Station.
  • Development of non-chemical propulsion that is sufficiently powerful to speed up any spacecraft with humans on board to get them to Mars faster. Nuclear propulsion may provide a solution.
  • Development of heavy payload delivery systems that can land on Mars. Curiosity, the size and weight of a small car, required a complex system for getting to the planet surface with the descent described by NASA staff as “7 minutes of terror.” What is needed is retrofire systems that can guide payloads to the ground in any Martian environmental conditions.
  • Improvements to navigation software and technology so that when reaching Mars, human crews can land within walking distance of the infrastructure built by the autonomous systems that preceded their arrival. Crews should move into a working habitat that is adequately supplied to sustain them.
  • Improvements to communication technology not only to link Mars to Earth, but also, to ensure missions of exploration are always connected to a Martian home base regardless of environmental conditions on the planet. This means further advances in optical Deep Space communications to support in flight and on surface interaction in a timely manner.
  • Development of habitats that can stand up to Mars’ conditions. On Mars, ice and Martian regolith may prove to be the primary building materials. On the Moon, the lunar regolith is the most likely primary construction material.
  • Development of net-zero water and waste recycling systems to ensure short to long-term sustainability for a human crew to survive on the planet.
  • Development of resource technology to harvest water, oxygen, and fuel from the air, ground and subterranean locations on Mars.
  • Development of a reliable power generation technology for Mars. Photovoltaic energy harvesting on Mars may be insufficient for a human settlement. With Mars getting only half the amount of light energy from the Sun that is available to Earth, NASA doesn’t see solar power as viable for Mars. Modular nuclear power technology may provide the solution. Today modular nuclear fission technology is still in its infancy. And fusion remains a decade away before it becomes commercially viable.
  • If we want to explore Mars then we will need transportation systems that can move us efficiently and quickly while withstanding a punishing environment. We can learn some things from Opportunity and Curiosity, the two working rovers. Both have metal wheels that exhibit the scars and punctures from rolling on the planet’s surface. And both move very slowly. Humans will want to get around on Mars at a pace not too different from the way they drive here on Earth.
  • And finally the development of cosmic and solar radiation protection for humans traveling beyond the relatively benign nature of Earth’s immediate space. Today humans don’t venture beyond low-Earth orbit. In the Apollo program of the 1960s and 70s, the five expeditions to the Moon exposed astronaut crews to deadly cosmic radiation. Those expeditions were short in duration. A prolonged stay on the Moon would be far more dangerous. And a trip to Mars would mean exposure to radiation that would undoubtedly shorten the lives and jeopardize the health of all of its human crew.
When President Trump announced that the United States was no longer to participate in the global cause of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, I’m wondering if he thought that there will always be Mars.

Well, there won’t. We are here for the duration. Earth will remain our primary home for the foreseeable future and learning collectively to live on it sustainably should be the goal of every one of us. For humanity, Mars and the Moon are and will remain interesting places to visit and explore, just like we do today in Antarctica.

By Josie Ensor, middle east correspondent • 9 July 2017 • 7:00AM

Serkan Golge had been making dinner with his wife Kubra at his parent’s house when came a frantic knock at their front gate. The policemen at the door were in no mood to explain, summarily dragging Mr Golge away in handcuffs to a local station in the southern Turkish city of Antakya.

It was only eight days after last year’s failed coup attempt against Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but already the reprisals were in full swing.

The 37-year-old Nasa physicist, a Turkish-American citizen who was working on the manned mission to Mars programme, was one of tens of thousands of academics, police, military and journalists who were rounded up and detained as Mr Erdogan sought to re-establish his grip on power.

Mr Golge sat through several hours of questioning before being told of his alleged crime - supporting the organisation of Fethullah Gulen, a one-time friend of Mr Erdogan’s now living in exile in the US who was accused of orchestrating the attempted putsch.

When officers searched Mr Golge’s family home they found a $1 bill. The bills have come to denote membership of the Islamic cleric’s secretive group, with their serial numbers alleged to contain coded meanings.

A Nasa security card found in his wallet was also submitted as evidence he was working as an informant for the CIA.

Mr Golge, who had been living in Houston, Texas, for three years and was only on a month-long holiday in Turkey when he was arrested, has protested his innocence in court, but remains behind bars facing a 15-year jail sentence if convicted.

The case has come to symbolise the paranoid Turkish state and the rise of Mr Erdogan’s pernicious authoritarianism - as well as increasingly strained relations between Ankara and Washington which has failed to secure his release despite diplomatic pressure.

“We had watched the coup on TV like everyone else,” his wife, Mrs Golge told The Telegraph. “If we were guilty we would have run back to America straight away, but we didn’t.

“We couldn’t ever have imagined something like this could happen. It all still feels like a sick joke,” she says.

Saturday will mark a year since the abortive coup, but many in Turkey believe the president has been leading the country backwards, not forwards.

In the last 12 months, Mr Erdogan has imposed an indefinite state of emergency, under which he has managed to vastly extend his powers and imprison anyone he believes to be a threat to his rule.

His increasingly autocratic approach has lost Turkey the dwindling band of friends it once had in Europe and risked its alliance with Nato.

Mass purges in academia, the judiciary and media have left “the nation's best and the brightest either in prison or selling bagels on the street,” as Mahir Zeynalov, a Turkish journalist deported for a tweet critical of Mr Erdogan in 2014, puts it.

“If I had not been arrested upon a flagrant slander on July 23, 2016, I at the moment would be continuing research in my office at Nasa as one of the few Turks among the thousands of scientists and engineers who are working in the manned trip to Mars project,” Mr Golge said when he addressed the judges in his first court appearance earlier this year.

A well-regarded senior researcher at the agency, he had been studying the effects of space radiation on humans in advance of an eventual mission to Mars.

Mrs Golge says an estranged family member who held a grudge over a disputed inheritance tipped off police that her husband was a Gulenist. After the coup, Mr Erdogan called upon citizens to report suspected followers of the cleric.

It would be the beginning of a Kafkaesque nightmare for Mr Golge and his family. He has spent the last 10 months in solitary confinement and has lost more than two stone in weight from the stress.

Mrs Golge, 32, said that despite his dual Turkish-US citizenship he has been denied access to the US consulate.

Behind the scenes, Washington has put considerable pressure on Ankara to release Mr Golge. That he is still in prison is a sign of the US’s waning influence over its Nato ally.

Mr Golge’s case is yet to be heard. A huge backlog is delaying the trial.

“I just want to scream and shout so loud about what is happening to him. He has such an intelligent mind that is wasting away in that cell,” says Mrs Golge, who cannot leave Turkey as she is subject to a travel ban.

The state’s ruthless crackdown on anyone deemed disloyal has created such a climate of fear that most are afraid of speaking up. Mrs Golge now does not even dare talk to friends and neighbours.

Mr Erdogan described last summer's plot as a “gift from God”. The 63-year-old strongman, who leads the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), has long held ambitions for expanded presidential powers.

The July 15 putsch allowed him to present himself as the best cure to the chaos, the declining security situation and flagging economy. In April he put a set of constitutional reforms to a vote, which he won by the thinnest of margins.

Turkey has spent more than 80 years making strides towards democracy after years of military rule. Now, critics and rights activists say, the country is lurching in the opposite direction to rising concerns in the international community.

The European Union, which is considering Turkey for membership, has decried what it sees as a descent into authoritarian rule.

Mr Erdogan does not take kindly to criticism from the bloc, which he believes is taking him for a fool.

“The EU has been giving us the runaround since 1963. And they are still making us wait at the door,” the leader this week told German daily Die Welt in a rare interview with a foreign newspaper.

But Turkey's credit-driven economy is very much linked to the Western financial system. Half of Ankara’s foreign trade is with the European Union.

Even if Mr Erdogan wanted to, it would not be easy to turn his back on Europe. And if the president gave up on the moribund ascension bid altogether he would risk a backlash.

Mr Erdogan seems to have spent much of the last year making enemies. In 12 months he has had spats with the EU, the US over its decision to arms the Kurds in Syria, Russia, Germany (which he said was being run by neo-Nazis), the Netherlands (which he called a “Nazi remnant”), and most recently with an alliance of Arab states trying to isolate terrorist-funder Qatar.

Perhaps the most egregious example of them all was allowing his personal bodyguards to beat up Kurdish demonstrators outside the Turkish ambassador's residence during a visit to DC in May.

Instead of extending his apologies to his hosts, the president summoned the US ambassador to explain why the guards were later questioned over the incident.

“Beating up protesters in Washington, his position on the Qatar crisis, reluctance to work with Syrian Kurds in the fight against ISIS only pushed for his isolation in the world. Turkey is not an international pariah yet, but it sure is on its way to be,” analyst Mr Zeynalov says.

“Erdogan is already isolated,” counters Aaron Stein, a resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Rafik Hariri Centre who specialises in Turkey. “Seriously, what major world leader is willing to stick up for Turkey these days?”

Internally, opposition movements are growing.

In the first act of mass defiance against the purge, thousands have been taking part in a march organised by members of the opposition People’s Republican party (CHP) along the 280-mile route from Ankara to Istanbul.

The march is due to finish today with a massive rally in Istanbul’s Maltepe district.

“We lost our democracy, and we are on the streets to demand it back,” 22-year-old Mehmet Altan, one of the protesters, told the Telegraph.

Those who had cheered on the coup’s failure last summer, including Mr Altan, now find themselves filled with regret.

“We were so fearful of what could have been, but we should have been afraid of what we already had,“ lamented the student.

Mrs Golge says an estranged family member who held a grudge over a disputed inheritance tipped off police that her husband was a Gulenist. After the coup, Mr Erdogan called upon citizens to report suspected followers of the cleric.

Stratasys (www.stratasys.com) says that the German Aerospace Centre is using its FDM 3-D printing technology to make a working prototype of the TransRoPorter (TRP).

Built at the Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics, this is an exploration robot designed for unmanned flights to Mars and set to be launched in four to five years. To successfully explore Mars with a robot, design and functionality are key factors.

Using a Fortus 900mc, the research team 3-D-printed a working prototype, significantly reducing production times compared with traditional methods.

“This is enabling the team to test the design and capabilities of the robot under simulated extreme conditions.

Kaj Fuehrer, head of system building technology, said: “A prototype made out of metal would be too expensive for us and too complex to produce.

“It became evident that using 3-D printing to make the TransRoPorter was truly the least expensive, fastest and mostelegant solution.”

The research team is 3-D printing large parts in FDM thermoplastic materials. According to Dr Fuehrer, the ASA material was well suited to testing the TransRoPorter prototype, enabling the team to produce a strong enough box to safely contain all the required technology.

He said: “It was extremely important that the fit was right, that the box could be mounted to the tracks and that the docking port worked. Using Stratasys FDM 3-D printing technology, we found that the material did not distort.”

Nee.

Published July 16, 2017 ● Associated Press

Aldrin, 87, commemorated the upcoming anniversary of the 1969 mission to the moon under a historic Saturn V rocket and raised more than $190,000 for his nonprofit space education foundation, ShareSpace Foundation. Aldrin believes people will be able to land on Mars by 2040, a goal that NASA shares. The space agency is developing the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft to send Americans to deep space.

Apollo astronauts Walt Cunningham, Michael Collins and Harrison "Jack" Schmitt joined Aldrin, one of 12 people to walk on the moon, at the sold-out fundraiser.

"I like to think of myself as an innovative futurist," Aldrin told a crowd of nearly 400 people in the Apollo/Saturn V Center. "The programs we have right now are eating up every piece of the budget and it has to be reduced if we're ever going to get anywhere."

During the gala, the ShareSpace Foundation presented Jeff Bezos with the first Buzz Aldrin Space Innovation Award. Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com and the spaceflight company Blue Origin, is trying to bring the cost of space travel down by reusing rockets.

"We can have a trillion humans in the solar system. What's holding us back from making that next step is that space travel is just too darned expensive," Bezos said. "I'm taking my Amazon lottery winnings and dedicating it to (reusable rockets). I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do that."

The foundation also honored former NASA astronaut Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to travel in space, with the Buzz Aldrin Space Pioneering Award.

"When Buzz says, 'Get your ass to Mars,' it's not just about the physical part of getting to Mars. It's also about that commitment to doing something big and audacious," Jemison told The Associated Press. "What we're doing looking forward is making sure that we use our place at the table."

Space memorabilia was auctioned at the gala, including an autographed first day insurance "cover" that fetched $42,500 and flew to the surface of the moon. Covers were set up by NASA because insurance companies were reluctant to offer life insurance to pioneers of the U.S. space program, according to the auction website. Money raised from their sale would have paid out to the astronauts' families in the event of their deaths. The covers were issued in limited numbers and canceled on the day of launch.

The gala is the first part of a three-year campaign leading up to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing to help fund advancements that will lead to the future habitation of Mars.

ShareSpace Foundation on Saturday announced a new nonprofit, the Buzz Aldrin Space Foundation, to create an educational path to Mars. During the past year, the foundation has gifted 100 giant maps of Mars to schools and continues to work with children to advance education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, or STEAM.
