Mars is continu heel koud.

By Paul Scott Anderson, December 11th, 2017

As incredible as it is to believe, NASA’s Opportunity rover is still going strong on Mars, nearly fourteen years after landing in January 2004. And now once again, it has just passed the shortest daylight time of the Martian year, the worst part of the Martian winter, with pretty clean solar panels to boot. Unlike the newer Curiosity rover which uses nuclear power, Opportunity, and its now-dead twin Spirit, uses solar panels for energy. At the same time, the rover continues to study an ancient gully thought to have been carved by water in the distant past.

“I didn’t start working on this project until about Sol 300, and I was told not to get too settled in because Spirit and Opportunity probably wouldn’t make it through that first Martian winter,” recalled Jennifer Herman, power subsystem operations team lead for Opportunity at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. “Now, Opportunity has made it through the worst part of its eighth Martian winter.”

Just like Earth, Mars has a tilted axis and seasons, although the Martian year is about twice as long. The period of shortest daylight this year was in October and November, Earth time.

Having fairly clean solar panels is good, including because scientists are anticipating that there may be another planet-wide dust storm in 2018. The last such storm was in 2007.

“We were worried that the dust accumulation this winter would be similar to some of the worst winters we’ve had, and that we might come out of the winter with a very dusty array, but we’ve had some recent dust cleaning that was nice to see,” Herman said. “Now I’m more optimistic. If Opportunity’s solar arrays keep getting cleaned as they have recently, she’ll be in a good position to survive a major dust storm. It’s been more than 10 Earth years since the last one and we need to be vigilant.”

“Relying on solar energy for Opportunity keeps us constantly aware of the season on Mars and the terrain that the rover is on, more than for Curiosity,” she added.

In the meantime, Opportunity has been busy investigating Perseverance Valley, a gully in the rim of Endeavour crater that scientists think was carved by liquid water a few billion years ago. The rover has been going to different specific locations within the valley, referred to as “lily pads,” to examine the rocks and soil.

“We have not been seeing anything screamingly diagnostic, in the valley itself, about how much water was involved in the flow,” said Opportunity Project Scientist Matt Golombek, of JPL. “We may get good diagnostic clues from the deposits at the bottom of the valley, but we don’t want to be there yet, because that’s level ground with no more lily pads.”

“We are confident this is a fluid-carved gully, and that water was involved,” said Principal Investigator Steve Squyres of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. “Fluid-carved gullies on Mars have been seen from orbit since the 1970s, but none had been examined up close on the surface before. One of the three main objectives of our new mission extension is to investigate this gully. We hope to learn whether the fluid was a debris flow, with lots of rubble lubricated by water, or a flow with mostly water and less other material.”

Afbeelding
Een bovenaanzicht van de ijsachtige erosiehelling. Afbeelding: NASA/JPL/University of Arizona/USGS

Klimaat

Ziekteverwekkers

Daarmee is hun aanpak opvallend vlot.

By Jon Austin | PUBLISHED: 13:45, Mon, Jan 29, 2018 | UPDATED: 18:20, Mon, Jan 29, 2018

A British nuclear entrepreneur believes he is on the brink of a scientific breakthrough which could half the proposed journey time to Mars.

Richard Dinan, a former star of Channel 4 reality TV show Made In Chelsea star, runs Applied Fusion Systems, which is trying to develop a nuclear fusion reactor small and light enough to fit inside a rocket, to make interstellar space missions feasible.

Scientists are currently trying to develop the world's first nuclear fusion reactor to create a clean and renewable power source to solve the world's energy crisis.

It is hoped it could be ready by 2030.

However, Mr Dinan believes it could also be the future of space travel.

He is the author of The Fusion Age, a book exploring the possibilities of new nuclear technologies.

He said: “Applied Fusion is a researcher and developer of nuclear fusion technology - specifically small reactors and the technologies which can be applied from the manufacture of these reactors.

“There hasn’t been the same level of funding in fusion as there has been in fission as it cannot be weaponised.

"Now I think people are starting to realise just how significant the fusion milestone will be for so much innovation. It’s a new age and it’s getting real very quickly.

"Fusion is about emulating what happens within a star. One way of doing it is a tokamak device which is a donut shaped vessel, a vacuum vessel, where we use very powerful electro-magnetic coils to crush and confine a plasma.

“By heating plasma to a very high temperature, you give the particles within it a chance to overcome their electrostatic propulsion to each other.

“And if they come close enough they can fuse releasing in this case a neutron. A neutron is not a charged particle so it escapes our magnetic fields and flies out to collide with the walls of the reactor.

"The kinetic energy from the neutron converts into heat which we can use to drive a conventional steam turbine.

“If you can harness fusion power for electricity then you can also harness it for rocket thrusters. Applied Fusion has been working on building reactors specifically for this purpose.

“We’re building reactors on the scale that we believe are the right size. Much more cost effective to build. Smaller and lighter, the advantages are that you could send a rocket a lot further and a lot faster, whist generating large amounts of surplus electricity to power on board, energy intensive robotic missions."

He said it has been shown that fusion thrusters have the potential to generate exhaust velocities fast enough to potentially halve mission times to Mars.

Nuclear fusion is a limitless, safe energy sources from plentiful materials from seawater and the Earth's crust.

Nuclear fusion aims to copy the process which powers the Sun for a new large-scale source of energy here on Earth.

When light atomic nuclei fuse together to form heavier ones, a large amount of energy is released.

To do this, fuel is heated to form a plasma in which fusion reactions take place.

A commercial power station will use the energy produced by fusion reactions to generate electricity.

It is considered a green energy source with no carbon emissions or long-term radioactive waste product.

It is also inexhaustible as the hydrogen comes from sea water and lithium.

Elon Musk still thinks a Mars colony will save us from a future dark age

By Nick Statt@nickstatt, Mar 11, 2018

The head of SpaceX and Tesla came to SXSW this week and gave a grave talk about the future of humanity

Elon Musk’s surprise SXSW talk this morning was a heavy and grave affair, full of discussion around all the ways humanity may be doomed in the future: from carbon in the atmosphere, World War III, and above all, runaway artificial intelligence. We have, many times, listened to Musk warn the public about these threats. That’s why the SpaceX and Tesla CEO thinks there is such a strong need to colonize Mars and maybe the Moon — as a safety net for humanity.

But here at SXSW — a tech, culture, and marketing extravaganza where people are ostensibly excited about the future — Musk’s words provided a stark deviation from the overhyped prognostications about how tech will change the world for the better. In some ways, it also feels like Musk is only ratcheting up his rhetoric on these subjects.

“There’s likely to be another dark ages... particularly if there’s a third world war,” Musk stressed, arguing that a Mars colony would stay away from the battle on Earth and carry the torch of human culture forward. He believes that the best way to ensure these dark ages are “shortened” is by having humans on other planets come back and rebuild.

Musk’s ventures, electric car maker Tesla and rocket transport outfit SpaceX, are designed specifically to help stave off these dangers, and in a worst case scenario, provide humanity the tools to escape them. Yet Musk took his time in Austin to give the audience another wake-up call regarding a threat no amount of climate change measures or anti-war rhetoric can help. “Mark my words,” Musk told the crowd, “AI is far more dangerous than nukes. So why do we have no regulatory oversight?”

In some ways, Musk was revisiting his favorite talking points. Musk’s comments about AI here echo ones he’s made before as far back as 2014. He’s also reminded the public many times before that there is a very real possibility that a nuclear war could devastate the planet and that colonizing the Solar System is the only certain way to mitigate against such an extinction events.

Musk repeated comments he made last summer about government regulation of AI as well, warning today at SXSW that AI researchers are not to be as worried about the threat of machines as they should be. “The biggest issue i see with so called AI experts is they think they know more than they do. They think they’re smarter than they are,” he said. “This plagues smart people… they don’t like the idea that a machine could be smarter than them, so they discount the idea,” Musk told the crowd.

Of course, you can view Musk’s cynical comments as fear mongering that is just as shallow as your standard SXSW fluff, just on the other end of the spectrum. And Musk is known —especially in the AI research community — as someone who likes to make headlines more than get his hands dirty studying the math, philosophy, and ethics necessary to make sense of software as smart or smarter than human beings. (Musk recently stepped down from the board of AI safety nonprofit OpenAI due to avoid a conflict of interest given Tesla’s work on autonomous driving systems.)

But Musk has time and again showed that he has a firm grip on a fair number of complex subjects, from rocket science to car manufacturing to, apparently, neuroscience. “I’m very close to the cutting edge in AI and it scares the hell out of me,” Musk told the crowd. He reminded the audience in Austin that his new brain-computer interface company, Neuralink, is designed to help humans keep pace with AI by merging with software, a science fiction concept that feels far, if not impossibly so, from reality at the moment. “Neuralink is trying to help if that regard by creating a high bandwidth interface between AI and the human brain,” Musk added.

Musk’s brain-computer interface venture Neuralink wants to merge humans with AI
But it wasn’t entirely doom and gloom. Musk tossed in a few of his infamous, hard-to-gauge predictions and deadlines, saying he expects self-driving cars to be as much as 200 percent safer than a human driver by the end of next year and that in the same time frame, SpaceX would begin testing the rocket the company hopes will one day begin ferrying people to Mars. But Musk mostly seemed to be afflicted by a kind of pessimistic malaise, with his comments more negative than usual and the audience getting none of his signature blend of ironic weirdness and inspirational earnest that we’ve seen him amp up on Twitter of late.

That said, Musk was in Austin with his brother Kimball Musk seemingly to help promote Westworld and to show off a promotional video of the Falcon Heavy launch cut together by Westworld showrunner Jonathan Nolan. And also probably to drink and eat tacos and just generally goof off. To that end, Musk and and his brother, who showed up for the end of the talk, switched gears. The duo donned the show’s signature white and black cowboy hats — Musk wore the black one — for a song and dance routine that seemed equally cringeworthy and out of place. It was, as some attendees put it, quite the ride.

Elon Musk plans Mars spaceship, warns there's a 'good chance' that early passengers could die

By Chris Ciaccia | Fox News

Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the Moon, once said, "Mars is there, waiting to be reached."

If Elon Musk has his way, he'll be the one to reach it, even if it's likely to be a dangerous journey that could result in the loss of human life.

Speaking at the South by South West festival in Austin, Texas, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Musk said he envisions test flights of his Mars spacecraft next year, though he cautioned early trips could end in death.

“For the early people that go to Mars, it will be far more dangerous. It kind of reads like (Ernest) Shackleton’s ad for Antarctic explorers: Difficult, dangerous, good chance you’ll die," Musk said. "Excitement for those who survive.”

A man known for his ability to make absurd deadlines and then failing to live up to them, Musk acknowledged that his plan to do "short flights, up and down flights [to Mars], some time in the first half of next year" was a bit optimistic. "Although sometimes, my timelines are a little, y'know..." he said to laughter, before trailing off, according to the BBC.

The carrier that is expected to eventually get to the Red Planet is the BFR rocket system. According to the company's website, the BFR will have an updated design over the current Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy and Dragon, with a single system containing one booster and one ship.
During the question and answer session at Austin's SXSW, Musk even talked about the type of society he expects Mars to have in order to make it a success.

"I think most likely the form of government on Mars would be a direct democracy, where people vote directly on issues," he said, in comments obtained by the BBC. "Everyone votes on every issue and that’s how it goes."

He also expects a colony on Mars to help ensure the survival of the human race, calling out issues such as another world war, saying it's "unlikely" there would not be another one.
Musk, 46, also showed excitement for industry on Mars, highlighting businesses such as pizza joints and even making a joke about people drinking at a Mars Bar.

Plan to get to Mars
By 2022, SpaceX hopes to get the BFR to Mars, where its initial mission "will be to confirm water resources and identify hazards along with putting in place initial power, mining, and life support infrastructure."

The company has previously said a second mission, scheduled for 2024, would have "primary objectives of building a propellant depot and preparing for future crew flights," designed to eventually build a self-sustaining civilization on Mars.

The company, which raised an additional $450 million in venture funding, according to an SEC filing, is now valued at $21.5 billion, due in large part because of its advanced reusable rocket technology and its quest to get to Mars.

Musk's comments follow a string of recent successes for SpaceX, especially last month's launch of the Falcon Heavy rocket.

Elon Musk: we must colonise Mars to preserve our species in a third world war

Olivia Solon - Sun 11 Mar 2018 20.50 GMT Last modified on Mon 12 Mar 2018 17.49 GMT

Elon Musk: we must colonise Mars to preserve our species after a third world war – video

Founder of SpaceX, which is working on getting humans to the planet, speaks at SXSW amid rising nuclear tension

Humans must prioritise the colonisation of Mars so the species can be conserved in the event of a third world war, SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk said on Sunday.

“It’s important to get a self-sustaining base on Mars because it’s far enough away from earth that [in the event of a war] it’s more likely to survive than a moon base,” Musk said on stage at SXSW – just days after Donald Trump announced plans to meet the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, in an attempt to defuse rising nuclear tension.

“If there’s a third world war we want to make sure there’s enough of a seed of human civilisation somewhere else to bring it back and shorten the length of the dark ages,” Musk said, responding to questions from his friend Jonah Nolan, the co-creator of the TV show Westworld.

SpaceX is working on a vehicle that will take humans to Mars, a 100-metre ship codenamed the BFR (Big Fucking Rocket). But building a colony would require “tremendous entrepreneurial resources”, Musk said.

He also countered the suggestion that Mars might be “some escape hatch for rich people” by highlighting the risks of the mission: “It will be like Shackleton’s ad for Antarctic explorers: ‘Difficult, dangerous, a good chance you’ll die, excitement for those who survive.’ That kind of thing.

“There’s not many people who will want to go in the beginning,” he said, adding that over time the Red Planet colony would be hospitable and have “great bars. The Mars bar! I love dad jokes, I’m a dad!”

The BFR will fly for the first time in the first half of 2019, Musk said, acknowledging that his “timelines historically have been optimistic”. The production of the Tesla Model 3 electric car, for example, has been plagued by delays.

Musk said he initially gave SpaceX and Tesla a likelihood of success of just 10%.

“I wouldn’t let my friends invest because I didn’t want them to lose their money,” he said of SpaceX. Instead he funnelled his own money, from the sale of PayPal, into the businesses.

“SpaceX is alive by the skin of its teeth. So is Tesla. If things had gone a little bit the other way, both companies would be dead.”

Musk said he was now kept awake at night by the threat posed by unregulated artificial intelligence, which he has previously warned could lead humanity into a third world war – another the reason to go to Mars.

“Mark my words,” he said, “AI is much more dangerous than nukes. So why do we have no regulatory oversight?”

He suggested a public regulatory body would need “insight and oversight” to confirm that everyone was developing AI safely and in a way that is “symbiotic with humanity”.

However, even coming up with the safety parameters would present all sorts of insidious and unexpected risks, Musk said. If the utility function of artificial intelligence is to maximise happiness of humans, a super-intelligent AI might decide that the best way to do that is to capture all humans and inject their brains with dopamine and serotonin.

Musk proposed that digital intelligence should instead be directed to maximise “the freedom of action of humanity”.

The Q&A session ended on a surreal note as Musk, his younger brother Kimbal and Nolan all donned stetsons and sang a snippet of My Little Buttercup, a song from the 1986 movie The Three Amigos.

“This is going to be real bad,” warned Musk. He was right.

Russia will launch a mission to Mars in 2019 which if successful would beat NASA’s planned exploration of the red planet by a year.

Vladimir Putin revealed his country’s space plans during a documentary about the president which was widely shared on social media.

He said: "We are planning unmanned and later manned launches, into deep space, as part of a lunar program and for Mars exploration. The closest mission is very soon, we are planning to launch a mission to Mars in 2019."

The revelation during a documentary on the president hosted by Andrey Kondrashov comes on the heels of NASA's announcement it would attempt to explore the red planet in a Mars 2020 mission in which it would investigate the potential for life.

Putin, who is expected to be re-elected as president in the country’s election on Sunday, said that Russia would also launch a mission to the polar regions of the Moon, adding that its lunar program would differ to the one his country undertook in Soviet times.

"Our specialists will try to make landings on the poles, because there is reason to believe that there can be water there. There, there is progress to be made, studies of other planets, distant space can be started from there,” he said in the film uploaded to Russian social media site vkontakte.

Putin did not specify when in 2019 the Mars mission would happen. The NASA mission is expected to take place around July and August 2020 when the positions between Earth and Mars are best placed for a landing.

The race to the red planet is hotting up, with billionnaire entrepreneur Elon Musk telling the South by Southwest Conference on Sunday that his SpaceX Mars rocket may be ready for test flights next year. He had previously stated his ambition was to launch cargo flights by 2022.

So far, Russia’s attempts at a Mars mission have ended in failure. In 2011, the ill-fated Phobos-Grunt probe was unable to be fired toward the orbit of the red planet after launch. Its mission was designed to bring back samples from the planet's moon Phobos.

The Russian space program Roscosmos worked with the European Space Agency in the Schiaparelli EDM lander mission, in which a Russian rocket was used.

Oceanen op Mars ontstonden al vroeg

Tim Kraaijvanger, 20 maart 2018

Tharsis ontstond zo’n 3,7 miljard jaar geleden.

Elon Musk: We Must Leave Earth For One Critical Reason

Jolene Creighton, September 11, 2016

In its early life, the Earth would have been peppered nearly continuously by asteroids smashing into our young planet. These fiery collisions made our world what it is today. It may seem like things have changed since then, given the vast assortment of life and wide blue oceans—and things have indeed changed. At least in some respects. However, Earth still receives thousands of tons of matter from space, but this is in the form of microscopic dust particles (as opposed to recurrent, energetic collisions).

Fortunately, in modern times, a large asteroid colliding with the surface of the Earth happens only very rarely. Nevertheless, it does happen from time to time.

As most are probably already aware, it is widely believed that an asteroid initiated the dinosaurs’ extinction some 65 million years ago. And more recently, the Russian Chelyabinsk meteor hit our planet in February of 2013. It entered at a shallow angle at 60 times the speed of sound. Upon contact with our atmosphere, it exploded in an air burst. The size of this body of rock (before it burned up and shattered) is estimated to be around 20 meters (across) and it weighed some 13,000 metric tons.

This isn’t large by any means, but it was enough to injure over a thousand people and damage nearly 20,000 buildings.

But what would happen if we were faced with a truly major threat today? Could we survive?

Well, it depends on the size of the object and where it hits, but in short…no. Unless an asteroid was very small, we wouldn’t be able to destroy it or vaporize it—this is simply beyond our technological capabilities (at the moment). We also don’t have the technology necessary to deflect the asteroid or veer it off course.

Why We Need to Leave Earth
This is a bit of a problem because, assuming that humanity plans on sticking around for awhile, it is almost inevitable that we will have to face a large asteroid at some point. Of course, asteroids aren’t the only threat. There are a host of deadly diseases, volcanic eruptions, or other catastrophes that could bring about the end of civilization as we know it (and maybe even all life).

This is why it makes sense to transition into a multi-planet species as soon as possible. Blogger Tim Urban recently had a rather apt metaphor to illustrate why we need to leave our planet and venture out into the cosmos: Picture the Earth as a kind of hard drive. And on this hard drive we have saved everything. Every song. Every book. Every thought that has been thought and every word that has been uttered. Every memory.

And that’s not all: It also houses every single species. All of it is stored in a word document saved on that hard drive.

Oh, and the hard drive has broken before, and when it happened, we lost nearly everything. It got a virus and…that’s it, two-thirds of the population gone. It smashed into something and, alas, there goes another batch of data.

Blank pages. File corrupted.

So it makes sense to make a backup. As Urban puts it, “Now—if you owned a hard drive with an extraordinarily important Excel doc on it, and you knew that the hard drive pretty reliably tended to crash every month or two, with the last crash happening five weeks ago—what’s the very obvious thing you’d do? You’d copy the document onto a second hard drive.”

That is why we need to leave Earth. We need to have another plan. A safeguard.

Of course, we should also do it for exploration and discovery, but we need to do it for life itself. And that is one of the primary reasons that Elon Musk wants to head to the Red Planet. It is a way of ensuring humanity’s continued existence (assuming that we think the document is worth saving). And ultimately, it’s why he doesn’t want to go with just a select set of scientists and experts.

He wants to take a significant portion of the data on our hard drive—Musk would like to send 1 million people to Mars.

At the Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital Conference in 2013, Musk explained his feelings, stating, “Either we spread Earth to other planets, or we risk going extinct. An extinction event is inevitable and we’re increasingly doing ourselves in. The goal is to improve rocket technology and space technology until we can send people to Mars and establish life on Mars.”

Of course, this will be no simple task. Mars is, currently, a wasteland of dirt and sand.

“Mars is a fixer-upper of a planet,” Musk said. “But we could make it work.” And honestly, even if we can’t make it work, it seems that we have no real choice but to try. Musk concludes, “I agree this is an unlikely outcome, but if we don’t keep improving technology every year, we won’t get there.”

Later this year, via his rocket firm SpaceX, Musk plans to disclose a spacecraft designed to transport as many as 100 people at a time to Mars.

SpaceX will build its "BFR" spaceship at a new facility in the Port of Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced yesterday (April 16).

The company plans to use this ambitious new vessel — whose acronym name stands for "Big Falcon Rocket" (or a less-family-friendly version of that name) — to send people to Mars by 2024 and set up a colony on the Red Planet within the next 50 to 100 years. Elon Musk, SpaceX's founder and CEO, has said that the BFR could also send people to the moon, launch satellites to low Earth orbit, clean up orbital debris and transport passengers around Earth at record speeds.

Requiring additional space for this enormous new endeavor, SpaceX decided to open up a new facility in the Port of Los Angeles, located roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of the company's headquarters in Hawthorne, California.
[The BFR: SpaceX's Mars-Colonization Architecture in Images]

"Officially announcing that @SpaceX will start production development of the Big Falcon Rocket in the @PortofLA! This vehicle holds the promise of taking humanity deeper into the cosmos than ever before," Garcetti tweeted after his State of the City address.

According to documents posted online by the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners, SpaceX's new site takes up about 18 acres (7.3 hectares) on Terminal Island, a small industrial zone between the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles and the city of Long Beach, California.

After an initial 10-year lease, SpaceX will have the option to renew the lease for the next two decades, which means the company and its BFR activities could be sticking around Terminal Island for the next 30 years. The rent will cost SpaceX approximately $1.38 million per year, the Associated Press reported.

"SpaceX has called the Port of Los Angeles home to our west coast recovery operations since 2012 and we truly appreciate the City of Los Angeles' continued partnership," Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, said in a statement provided to Space.com.

"As announced today by Mayor Garcetti, the Port will play an increasingly important role in our mission to help make humanity multi-planetary as SpaceX begins production development of BFR — our next generation rocket and spaceship system capable of carrying crew and cargo to the moon, Mars and beyond," she said.
