The Case for Free Money

4:00 AM, Feb 02, 2018 | By Tony Mecia

Afbeelding

Universal basic income looks like a big-government redistribution scheme, but it may be the best way to rein in entitlements

At first blush, universal basic income sounds like something dreamed up on a California commune or in a late-night college bull session. The idea: Just give people money. Ask nothing in return. Impose no requirement to work or to look for work. And don’t just give taxpayer money to people living in poverty, give it to everybody—from gazillionaire to gig-worker—no questions asked.

Yet universal basic income is an idea that is having its moment. Enthusiasm for a government-guaranteed income for all seems to be percolating across the country. Groups backed by Silicon Valley luminaries are forming to devise political strategies. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign flirted with the idea. There’s scholarly and popular interest in the small-scale attempts that have been made, and new experiments are being launched to try to answer some of the questions about how it could work.

Advocates are fond of noting that the idea draws support from people of all political stripes, including conservatives and libertarians. Part of the support stems from the reality that existing government antipoverty programs don’t work. Both sides agree on that—though they disagree on whether the roots of the failure are insufficient funding, government mismanagement, or poor design. The proof is in the numbers: The government spends more than $1 trillion each year helping the poor, yet one in eight Americans lives in poverty. A lot of economists and social scientists think it is time to examine other options.

One of the most vocal proponents of universal basic income is Charles Murray, who has spent the better part of the last four decades studying and writing about social policy. In 2006, he published In Our Hands: A Plan to Replace the Welfare State. It is less a philosophical treatise than a nuts-and-bolts blueprint, with detailed financial analysis, that specifies how a universal basic income could be implemented in the United States and what would be its positive social effects. At the time, the little attention it received came chiefly from people on the left who were already interested in the topic. But the idea gained steam in the following decade, and Murray revised the book, releasing a new edition in 2016 that updated the numbers. His plan: Give everybody over age 21 $13,000 a year. Compel them to use $3,000 of it on catastrophic health insurance. The payment starts to be taxed when annual income hits $30,000. The recipient decides how to spend the rest.

Murray has long been an intellectual hero to the right, but this idea of a basic income for all would seem to ask a lot of conservatives. It sounds a lot like a big-government redistribution scheme, a fulfillment of a socialist dream to take money from those who are successful and spread it around equally. Murray argues that conservatives should support a basic income because the trend lines of the current system are financially unsustainable. The numbers would work, he estimates, if the government eliminates $2.2 trillion worth of annual benefits—including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare programs, and other transfer payments—and replaces them with his plan, which he estimates at $2.6 trillion (using 2014 numbers). Entitlements are projected to grow faster than the projections of his plan, so in time it would save money. (The government currently spends about $4 trillion a year.)

Murray tells me that many of the common objections to the idea come from a failure to understand the reality of the existing crisis. “In the case of ‘You’re just giving people money,’ well, we’re just giving people money now, for heaven’s sake,” he says. “And we have a huge problem of able-bodied young males sitting in front of video boxes stoned and unemployed. We already have a huge problem there. This will not make it worse. It will diminish it.”

Issuing all adults regular payments straight to their bank accounts would, he adds, have all kinds of positive effects conservatives find palatable. More people would get married, as it becomes possible to live a middle-class lifestyle by sharing distributions and combining them with a little bit of income. Women in bad relationships would have financial independence from ne’er-do-well boyfriends. The middle class could save for retirement. Workers wouldn’t be tied to soul-crushing jobs. Entrepreneurs would have a cushion to try something new.

Murray knows Congress won’t be acting any time soon—“the ability of Congress to kick the can down the road seems inexhaustible,” he says. And he doesn’t trust politicians to keep the government’s role limited, which is why he favors a constitutional amendment barring all transfer payments except the distribution.

As to criticism that basic income is a pipe dream that politicians could never pull off, Murray says he’s floating an idea. “Let’s be real,” he says. “It’s never going to be enacted the way I want it to be enacted. My job is to say this is a system that could actually work. It could actually accomplish good things if it were implemented. My responsibility is to make that case. The fact it’s not politically possible right now—that’s not my job.”

Ik kwam het document Quantum Vacuum Engineering for Power and Propulsion from the Energetics of Space tegen van H. David Froning Jr..

One of the ways that computers think is by analysing relationships within large sets of data. An international team has shown that quantum computers can do one such analysis faster than classical computers for a wider array of data types than was previously expected.

The team's proposed quantum linear system algorithm is published in Physical Review Letters. In the future, it could help crunch numbers on problems as varied as commodities pricing, social networks and chemical structures.

"The previous quantum algorithm of this kind applied to a very specific type of problem. We need an upgrade if we want to achieve a quantum speed-up for other data," says Zhikuan Zhao, corresponding author on the work.

The first quantum linear system algorithm was proposed in 2009 by a different group of researchers. That algorithm kick-started research into quantum forms of machine learning, or artificial intelligence.

A linear system algorithm works on a large matrix of data. For example, a trader might be trying to predict the future price of goods. The matrix may capture historical data about price movements over time and data about features that could be influencing these prices, such as currency exchange rates. The algorithm calculates how strongly each feature is correlated with another by 'inverting' the matrix. This information can then be used to extrapolate into the future.

"There is a lot of computation involved in analysing the matrix. When it gets beyond say 10,000 by 10,000 entries, it becomes hard for classical computers," explains Zhao. This is because the number of computational steps goes up rapidly with the number of elements in the matrix: every doubling of the matrix size increases the length of the calculation eight-fold.

The 2009 algorithm could cope better with bigger matrices, but only if their data is sparse. In these cases, there are limited relationships among the elements, which is often not true of real-world data. Zhao, Prakash and Wossnig present a new algorithm that is faster than both the classical and the previous quantum versions, without restrictions on the kind of data it crunches.

As a rough guide, for a 10,000 square matrix, the classical algorithm would take on the order of a trillion computational steps, the first quantum algorithm some tens of thousands of steps and the new quantum algorithm just hundreds of steps. The algorithm relies on a technique known as quantum singular value estimation.

There have been a few proof-of-principle demonstrations of the earlier quantum linear system algorithm on small-scale quantum computers. Zhao and his colleagues hope to work with an experimental group to run a proof-of-principle demonstration of their algorithm, too. They also want to do a full analysis of the effort required to implement the algorithm, checking what overhead costs there may be.

To show a real quantum advantage over the classical algorithms will need bigger quantum computers. Zhao estimates that "We're maybe looking at three to five years in the future when we can actually use the hardware built by the experimentalists to do meaningful quantum computation with application in artificial intelligence."

Falcon Heavy Test Flight

SpaceX - 2 uur geleden live gestreamd

It’s difficult to overstate what SpaceX has just accomplished: it’s successfully introduced a new heavy rocket to the world, the most powerful in operation and second only to the Apollo era, all through a private company and at a fraction of a cost of other systems currently in construction.

Nasa is working on its own heavy launch system, called the SLS, but it is estimated to cost about a billion dollars per flight. SpaceX estimates that Falcon Heavy launches will cost about $90m per flight.

What’s more, just a few years ago the notion of re-landing reusable rockets seemed like a pipe dream, and yet SpaceX has made it routine, with regular landings on land and on a drone ship floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Today it managed to land two Falcon 9 rockets simultaneously, each dropping gracefully from the sky with a controlled burn.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/liv ... ve-updates

Boeing’s new hypersonic plane could circle the globe in 3 hours

By Kristine Lofgren, 5-2-2018

Afbeelding

Boeing has developed a hypersonic plane that is faster than a speeding bullet. So fast, in fact, that it could circle the globe in just three hours, according to the manufacturer. The plane is designed to use its own shockwaves to increase its speed, and it could herald an entirely new era of flight.

The plane was revealed last month, though we are just now getting real details about what it is like. The hypersonic plane is a ‘waverider’ style, which means that it uses the shock waves it creates to increase its speed. It is being developed as a reconnaissance or strike plane, and if it enters production, it will be the fastest plane ever produced, hitting speeds of Mach 5 or higher (that’s a mind-bending 3,836 mph).

Afbeelding

The development of a hypersonic plane could change the way we engage in warfare, because it means that a threat could arrive so quickly, there would only be minutes to identify it and prepare a defense. It also means that if it were developed as a passenger plane you would be able to travel anywhere across the Atlantic in an hour, and anywhere across the Pacific in two hours. It would go more than twice as fast as the Concorde.

Florida Man Becomes First Person to Live With Advanced Mind-Controlled Robotic Arm

By Chelsea Gohd on February 3, 2018

Mind-Controlled Robotic Arm
Prosthetics have advanced drastically in recent years. The technology’s potential has even inspired many, like Elon Musk, to ask whether we may be living as “cyborgs” in the not-too-far future. For Johnny Matheny of Port Richey, Florida, that future is now. Matheny, who lost his arm to cancer in 2005, has recently become the first person to live with an advanced mind-controlled robotic arm. He received the arm in December and will be spending the next year testing it out.

The arm was developed by Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab as part of their program Revolutionizing Prosthetics. The aim of the program, which is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is to create prosthetics that are controlled by neural activity in the brain to restore motor function to where it feels entirely natural. The program is specifically working on prosthetics for upper-arm amputee patients. While this particular arm has been demoed before, Matheny will be the first person to actually live with the prosthesis. The program does hope to have more patients take the tech for a longterm test run, though.

While the prosthetic device is impressive, it’s not a limitless, all-powerful robot arm. Matheney won’t be able to get the arm wet and is not allowed to drive while wearing it. Keeping a few rules in mind, Matheney will otherwise be free to push the tech to the edge of its capabilities, truly exploring what it can do.

Revolutionizing Prosthetics
The word cyborg might elicit images of cartoon supervillains, but the integration of advanced robotics into medical prosthetics has been largely positive, even life-changing, for many patients. In some cases, the devices have been able to restore their motor and sensory abilities. The introduction of “mind-controlled” robotic prosthetics will allow patients with amputations, traumatic injuries, or who were born without a limb to utilize a complete and full range of motion. What’s most impressive is that the prosthetics will allow them to do this in a way that feels “natural.”

The two major components of the current prosthetic “test” will be to determine how technically capable the arm is and how well it’s controlled by Matheny’s brain. If these robotic limbs controlled solely by thought can be designed and successfully used, it would revolutionize prosthetics. Artificial limbs could then become much more organic; working with an individual patient’s movements, intentions, and body.

If the year of testing proves successful, what could it mean for the future of prosthetics? Or for the prospect of cyborgs? Aside from the many ways in which it benefits patients using prosthetic limbs, the technology might also prove to be useful in some unexpected places — like a journey to Mars.

Elon Musk has said that if humans are to keep up with machines, to explore the far reaches of our Solar System, to venture beyond what already know to be possible, we will likely need to merge with machines. Biologically, human beings have clear and strict limitations. But, if we were assisted or augmented by mind-controlled mechanical attachments, humans of the future could redefine those limits.

Robothond opent nu ook deuren

Tim Kraaijvanger, 13 februari 2018

Robothond vervangt ‘echte’ hond

Johan Van Rooy | 15/02/2018 | Innovatie

Afbeelding
Met je smartphone cellen bekijken. Afbeelding: Centre for Nanoscale BioPhotonics.

Simpel

Ten Years to the Singularity If We Really Really Try

Upcoming telescopes should be able to detect mountains and other landscapes on exoplanets!

By Matt Williams - January 23, 2018

Afbeelding
Using the Transit Method, a team of astronomers has found a way to determine the presence of mountains and other features on exoplanets. - Image Credit: NASA/Tim Pyle

The study of exoplanets has advanced by leaps and bounds in the past few decades. Between ground-based observatories and spacecraft like the Kepler mission, a total of 3,726 exoplanets have been confirmed in 2,792 systems, with 622 systems having more than one planet (as of Jan. 1st, 2018). And in the coming years, scientists expect that many more discoveries will be possible thanks to the deployment of next-generation missions.

These include NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and several next-generation ground based observatories. With their advanced instruments, these and other observatories are not only expected to find many more exoplanets, but to reveal new and fascinating things about them. For instance, a recent study from Columbia University indicated that it will be possible, using the Transit Method, to study surface elevations on exoplanets.

The study, which recently appeared online under the title “Finding Mountains with Molehills: The Detectability of Exotopography”, was conducted by Moiya McTier and David Kipping – and graduate student and an Assistant Professor of Astronomy at Columbia University, respectively. Based on models they created using bodies in our Solar System, the team considered whether transit surveys might be able to reveal topographical data on exoplanets.

Billionaire Robert Bigelow sets up new company to operate future space stations

By Alan Boyle on February 20, 2018

Nevada-based Bigelow Aerospace has had space modules in orbit for more than a decade, but now billionaire founder Robert Bigelow is starting a new push to operate commercial space stations.

To that end, he has set up a separate company called Bigelow Space Operations, or BSO, with the aim of having Bigelow’s expandable B330 modules sent into orbit. Two of the 330-cubic-meter (12,000-cubic-foot) habitats are due to be ready for launch by as early as 2021.

The timing for deployment will depend on the outcome of Bigelow’s negotiations with potential launch providers, and the findings of a market study to be conducted by BSO this year.

“We intend to spend millions of dollars this year in drilling down, hopefully, to a conclusion one way or the other as to what the global market is going to look like, and we expect to finish this investigation by the end of this year”, Bigelow told reporters today during a teleconference.

Bigelow said BSO would report “whether the news is terrible, or is it mediocre, or is it great,” and decide on that basis whether to start building more B330s.

Several of those modules could be combined to create orbital outposts bigger than the International Space Station (which has 32,333 cubic feet of internal pressurized space).

Commercial space is not just about hardware, it’s about doing business differently. Bigelow Aerospace is ready to lead that charge. More details coming soon... http://www.bigelowspaceops.com
7:23 PM - Feb 8, 2018
Bigelow Aerospace also has plans for a gigantic space station called Olympus, with more than twice as much volume as the International Space Station. Olympus stations could be ready for launch eight to 10 years from now, but they’d have to be built at a new manufacturing facility in Florida, Alabama or some other location suitable for transportation to the launch pad, Bigelow said.

All of Bigelow’s space modules — including two uncrewed Genesis test spacecraft that were launched on Russian rockets in 2006 and 2007, and the 560-cubic-foot BEAM module that’s currently attached to the space station — rely on an expand-in-space technology that NASA developed in the 1990s.

The technology involves launching a folded-up, soft-walled spacecraft and then inflating it to its full volume in space. Because of the materials used in the wall fabric, such modules can be made more impervious to micrometeoroid impacts and space radiation than metal-hulled habitats, Bigelow said.

Bigelow noted that his drive to create commercial space stations has had its ups and downs. He said he had commitments of various sorts for space deals with representatives from eight countries back in 2007.

“And then all hell broke loose”, due to the Great Recession and the twists and turns of space policy, Bigelow said.

Today, he’s facing what he calls a “different playing field”. The interest in space operations has rebounded, thanks to improvements in the economy and reductions in the cost of access to space, pioneered by SpaceX.

But Bigelow said he and other potential space station operators are facing competition from two main sources. One is China, which Bigelow said has been talking with some of his former partners about joining in on a space station project beginning in the 2022-2023 time frame.

“They are being systematically courted by China,” Bigelow said.

The other is NASA, which is already starting to shift its focus toward the yet-to-be-built Lunar Orbital Platform Gateway while leaving the fate of the International Space Station after 2025 uncertain.

“This is a political problem ... and one that I call upon the Trump administration to get involved in,” Bigelow said. He said he had an “uneasy feeling” that there was no clearly defined plan for moving from the space station to future platforms for research, manufacturing and other activities in low Earth orbit.

Bigelow said he’s focusing on “helping foreign countries to establish their human space programs, and be able to facilitate on whatever their needs were.” Corporate applications would also be considered, but despite Bigelow’s long experience as a hotel magnate, he isn’t that interested in operating space hotels.

“We don’t look at tourism as a particularly deep market,” he said.

Even though Bigelow sees NASA as a competitor, it’s a potential customer as well.

NASA’s 2019 budget proposal calls for spending $150 million to facilitate the transition to commercial operations in low Earth orbit. If that comes to pass, BSO would be interested — as would other companies, such as Axiom Space and NanoRacks.

In league with United Launch Alliance, Bigelow also has offered the B330 as an option for space station expansion or for a supply depot in lunar orbit.

ULA isn’t the only potential partner. Other launch providers — including SpaceX and Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space venture — could be in play, said Blair Bigelow, who is vice president of corporate strategy for Bigelow Aerospace (and Robert Bigelow’s granddaughter).

Robert Bigelow said firm launch contracts wouldn’t be drawn up “if we don’t see a viable business case” to support BSO’s mission. He spoke dismissively about the idea of having a space station “whimsically deployed on a wing and a prayer.”

“We would pause after developing two of our 330s,” he said. “They would be sitting on the ground, waiting for deployment — if in fact they business simply weren’t there, if NASA were not interested, and the foreign countries were already spoken for in terms of where they’re going, and the corporate world was not interested as well.”

Nevertheless, Bigelow made clear that he was putting real resources into Bigelow Space Operations. He said BSO began hiring staff members in January.

“We will be hiring, this year ... between three and four dozen people,” he said. “Overall, when the company is in full operation, with station operations, I expect the population of our staff to number between 400 and 500.”

In a separate announcement, the company said it was already partnering with the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, or CASIS, which manages applications on the International Space Station in its role as a national research laboratory.

CASIS may well play a similar role for managing commercial space station operations, BSO said in its statement.

Wetenschappers ontwikkelen intelligente robot kopieën van overleden mensen

Xander, 23-02-2018

Afbeelding: (2).

Klik hier!

Een Japanse kijk :
There is a tendency to see artificial intelligence as the latest technology fad, either a buzzword that canny entrepreneurs exploit or the starting point for dystopian nightmares. Both are potentially accurate descriptions of much of the discussion surrounding AI, but both miss the most important point: AI is almost certain to become the most critical feature of the digital economy, assuming a role akin to electricity in the industrial revolution. If that prediction is correct — and few disagree — then mastery of AI and leadership in the field could determine the future economic and military balance of power.

AI is shorthand for an amalgam of computer processes that permit machines to evaluate and learn about their environment on their own. It includes automated intelligence, assisted intelligence, augmented intelligence and autonomous intelligence. AI depends on huge amounts of data and fast processors that allow real-time analysis to identify patterns. AI will “learn” exponentially as capabilities develop. That means that the occasional stunning feats of AI that we now encounter — victories by machines over chess or go masters — are trivial in comparison to what is coming. One study estimates that AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, a boost of 14 percent that will come from productivity gains and shifts in consumer behavior. Another analysis anticipates that AI will boost Japan’s annual growth rate by 1.9 percentage points by 2035.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke for many world leaders and AI experts when he told students last year that “artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind,” adding that “whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.”

The Chinese government has adopted that logic and is striving to position itself as the world leader in AI. It has developed a comprehensive plan for AI development that seeks to reach parity with the United States in this field by 2020, achieve major breakthroughs by 2025 and become “the world’s primary AI innovation center” by 2030. It is already making considerable progress toward those goals. China-based AI startups received 48 percent of all dollars going into such ventures around the world last year, surpassing the U.S. In addition, Chinese scientists sought 641 AI-related patents last year, nearly five times the number of their U.S. counterparts.

Some experts scoff at Chinese ambitions, arguing that limits on inquiry and discussion that the central government is increasingly ready to impose will prevent Chinese researchers from achieving those goals. There is little evidence that such constraints are meaningful. More important are the billions of dollars that governments, both central and local, provide to Chinese researchers, the push by Chinese technology powerhouses like Tencent and Alibaba to exploit this field (and make Beijing happy) and the vast databases that China has accumulated that allow algorithms to learn.

That many of these databases are used for state surveillance and the control of citizens is, sadly, beside the point. The research that is required to build successful products in this area — collecting, sorting and reading data to permit the real-time identification of individuals in large metropolitan areas — can be spun off into many other software systems with less nefarious purposes.

China is making progress, but it has not surpassed the U.S. in this field. The private sector in the U.S. is estimated to invest more than $70 billion in AI annually, which is more than 10 times Chinese private investment (and is also the amount that Japan’s private sector spends on AI, about ¥600 billion).

The U.S. also continues to outpace China when it comes to government spending. In 2015, the U.S. government allocated about $1.1 billion to AI research and development; total AI outlays in 2017 are reported to be more than twice that amount. It is not clear if the budget under President Donald Trump will continue the trend. The Trump administration is cutting outlays for basic research, aiming for example, to trim the National Science Foundation’s AI budget by 10 percent.

Japan risks missing out. The government launched the Artificial Intelligence Technology Strategy Council in April 2016 to develop a road map for the development and commercialization of AI. It prioritized productivity, mobility and health. But money matters, and the Japanese government’s 2018 AI budget of ¥77.04 billion — while a 30 percent jump from 2017 — will still be significantly less than the amount that the U.S. and China plan to spend. Money alone will not determine the winner in the race for AI supremacy, but it will matter — a lot. Japan must step up its efforts, alone and in partnership, to ensure that it remains in the first tier of countries working on in this area.

Algoritme voor zelfrijdende auto's herkent 'verstopte' objecten

Gepubliceerd: 06 maart 2018

Afbeelding

Your Human Virtual Assistant Will Soon Be an AI-Driven Digital Assistant

Scott Sandland/9 mrt. 2018

Good help is hard to find, but artificial intelligence is making it easy to build your own dream team.

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

A common problem for any scaling business is bringing on the right help at the right time. Small-business owners often find that the people they can afford don't have the skills or experience to do the job well, and the people they want cost too much relative to the business's current cash flow.

Most of the work is labor intensive, repetitive, boring and must be done correctly. As luck would have it, that's exactly the kind of tasks we build computers to do.

Outsourcing 1.0: The past
In the past 15 or so years, outsourcing to international assistants and part-time workers has been the go-to solution for entrepreneurs looking to grow on a budget. Famous successes from this way of thinking include Tim Ferriss's The 4-Hour Work Week and websites like elance.com (which is now Upwork.com). Still, finding the right work to assign to the right assistant in India or the Philippines required a learning curve that was sometimes expensive and time-consuming.

Thanks to growing progress in AI systems, much of this is beginning to change. The next wave of outsourcing is not to virtual assistants, but to digital ones.

Outsourcing 2.0: The present
There are a number of administrative jobs that are being increasingly handled by machines. Just a few early examples of software replacing business functions are X.ai (scheduling/calendaring), Grammarly (proofreading), Conversica (automated email) and LawGeex (contract review). Companies like IBM and Cisco are beginning to tackle customer service, and startups like mine, Cyrano.ai, are looking to manage the entire sales process (even the negotiation).

Right now it's best to think of each system as a standalone assistant that is unable to communicate with other assistants (this is called Artificial Narrow Intelligence). You tell the scheduling robot your work hours, you tell the proofreading robot what to read, you assign homework to your robotic paralegal, etc. Each will carry out the assigned tasks and report back to you, the quarterback who manages all these systems and executes based on all their efforts and insights.

When incorporating all this into your life or business, it's best to add these technologies one at a time and learn how to use them before adding subsequent systems. The learning curve gets flatter as you become accustomed to trusting these robots and learning what does and doesn't work. As you get a feel for how they work, you adjust. The fact that you have to adapt to them, and they don't invisibly work together, are two of the growing pains of this stage of development and a commentary on what is currently state-of-the-art.

Ultimately, all these distinct tools will get stacked together into a single system and become expected commodities the same way all the features you take for granted on a cellphone were added over time. One year later, you will wonder how you ever got along without them.

Outsourcing 3.0: The future
Ultimately, we want a single system that can do all these things and more (which is a big step toward, but still not, Artificial General Intelligence). An important part of a truly great digital assistant isn't just its ability to handle all these tasks in one system; it will need to understand your priorities and work well with you. For this to work at all (and for sales and customer service to get better), AI assistants need to have better emotional intelligence than they currently have. The nuance of how and when things are communicated must be measured and calculated, which may or may not necessitate follow-up questions from the assistant.

What if we could assign specific personality to our digital assistants? This has been shown in movies like Interstellar, Her and Iron Man to make our commands and requests more conversational and fluid. The existing batch of Siri, Alexa and Cortana have names and little touches of humanity programmed in, but what will it be like when you can make adjustments to your own assistant? This isn't just about assigning a new name as the "wake word" that turns it on or picking an accent -- this is about adjusting communication style to optimize efficiency and satisfaction. Big picture vs. detail-oriented. Bottom line vs. relationship-driven. As these kinds of things get quantified through natural language understanding, the digital assistants of the future will be optimized for personality. That means they can learn how to best work with you rather than you learning how each of the systems currently work.

As this happens, a growing company won't merely outsource what have been traditionally entry-level jobs; it means the right technology could increasingly handle important aspects of the business. Imagine how many great companies have failed because they couldn't get the right talent in a critical department. Imagine a world where these problems are fading away.

Why this is coming sooner than you think
Imagine starting a business with the knowledge that your administrative, sales, legal and customer service departments were all built into your Microsoft Office subscription, or part of your Google startup scholarship. How connected to that ecosystem would your business be? Google, MIcrosoft, Apple, IBM and Salesforce are just a few of the companies spending a combined billions of dollars on making this a reality because they know Outsourcing 3.0 is a market that can probably be cornered. Building, buying and integrating the different individual systems that need to work together to build the ultimate digital assistant will take time.

Microsoft currently owns most enterprise contracts today due to legacy. It has an impressive economic moat around this space, large enough that failing to gain traction in mobile could be absorbed. Whoever wins this next arms race will save companies of all sizes so much money it will offer a compelling reason for any company to switch to a new ecosystem and suite of services. "Virtual assistant as a service" is coming, and it's (eventually) going to be awesome.
