Artificial intelligence offers huge scientific benefits but also brings risks depending on how it is used, Demis Hassabis, the head of leading British AI firm DeepMind, said Friday.

"There's a whole bunch of interesting and difficult philosophical questions... that we're going to have to answer about how to control these systems, what values we want in them, how do we want to deploy them, what do we want to use them for," he said.

Hassabis was speaking at a screening of a documentary about AlphaGo, the AI system developed by DeepMind that stunned the world in 2016 by beating an elite human player in the complex Chinese strategy game "Go".

In a question and answer session at University College London, he said AI is an "incredible tool to accelerate scientific discovery", adding: "We believe that it will be one of the most beneficial technologies of mankind ever."

However, like other powerful technologies, "there are risks", he said, adding: "It depends on how we as a society decide to deploy it that will resolve in good or bad outcomes."

He said ethical questions were at the "forefront of our mind" at DeepMind, which he founded in 2010 and is now part of Google.

The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy [Documentary]

By Socrates on March 12, 2018

Afbeelding

People often ask me what is the best interview I have ever done. By now, my usual reply is that this is like asking a parent who is their favorite child. Even if most have their preferences, it is very unwise to verbalize an answer, let alone publicly, because the resulting negative impact may last a lifetime. But, despite the risks, I am willing to say that my interview with Jeremy Rifkin is definitely among the best ones I have ever done.

Rifkin is an economic and social theorist and the author of over twenty books including The Zero Marginal Cost Society, The Third Industrial Revolution and The Empathic Civilization. He is an advisor to the European Union and China as well as the principal architect of their plans for the third industrial revolution.

The Third Industrial Revolution is a comprehensive new economic vision for the world together with an on-going plan to implement it. And Rifkin puts forth a powerful argument that we need to do it quickly if we are to have any hope of minimizing the effects of climate change. This is the only comprehensive, cohesive and straight-forward “common-sense” plan that I know of, aimed at addressing climate change, creating jobs and growing the economy.

Synopsis: The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift.

With the Internet of Things infrastructure, Big Data and analytics can be used to develop algorithms that increase productivity and dramatically lower the marginal cost to near zero in the production and distribution of an increasing array of goods and services. Today, millions of people around the world are producing and sharing things like videos, music, contributions to Wikipedia, renewable energy, homes, and automobiles.

In the sharing economy, ownership gives way to access, sellers and buyers are replaced by providers and users, social capital becomes as important as market capital, consumerism is upended by sustainability, and quality of life indicators become more important than GDP. The sharing economy can become a circular economy in which goods and services are redistributed among multiple users, dramatically reducing society’s ecological footprint.

But with climate change now ravaging the planet, the transition to a new economic era has to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift.

Vliegende taxi Cora van Google-oprichter onthuld

Gepubliceerd: 13 maart 2018

Afbeelding
Foto: Kitty Hawk

Tests
Kitty Hawk gaat Cora eerste instantie testen in Nieuw-Zeeland.

Gepubliceerd: 14 maart 2018

Afbeelding

Let the robots have the damn jobs—all of them!

By Ben Dickson - January 2, 2018

Afbeelding

The past year was marked with increasing concerns about the effects artificial intelligence and automation will have on human employment and labor. Not a month goes by without one (or ten) articles warning about robots driving humans into unemployment and causing economic and social chaos.

But maybe we’re looking at things from the wrong perspective, through the lens of the laws that govern our current world. In a world where robots perform all tasks, many of the rules that we live by today might become obsolete. And it might not be such a bad thing.

RELATED: How artificial intelligence will disrupt the employment landscape

The value of human labor
In today’s world, we value most products (or services) by their scarcity and the human labor that goes into them. For instance, diamonds are scarce and that’s why they’re so expensive. But in most cases, we’re paying for the human labor that goes into creating goods and services. For example, when you buy grocery, you’re not paying for the scarcity of food. You pay for it because a lot of human labor goes into producing it, packaging it, transporting it and selling it to you in the store.

By human labor, I do not necessarily mean physical toil. It can also be cognitive functions. When you acquire a software or an online service, you pay for it because a lot of human labor goes into programming it and maintaining it. Those services in turn must pay for other services that support them and are running on human labor.

Each of us has a specific set of skills, which we sell to afford other people’s skills. For instance, I develop software and write articles to earn money and buy food and pay the rent. These activities account for a considerable part of our everyday lives. We’re still in a better situation than our ancestors, who had to spend the entire day hunting for food.

Afbeelding

With artificial intelligence and machine learning earning a more prominent role in every industry and domain, the need for human labor, both physical and cognitive, is dwindling. Self-driving trucks will eventually replace truck drivers, and smart vending machines fast food workers. Robots can flip burgers just as well as cooks and harvest crops better than field workers. Amazon’s automated retail store will obviate the need for cashiers, and smart drone deliveries might even make stores excessive. Even doctors, lawyers and news reporters can someday surrender their professions (or a large part of it) to artificial intelligence. We’re already seeing the glimmers of AI algorithms that create their own AI. Maybe one day, even AI researchers will go extinct.

In every case, we can expect robots to perform faster, better and cheaper than humans. They can work for longer periods (sometimes incessantly), improve their skills over time, and pass on their experience to their peers in real time.

RELATED: IoT and machine learning are invading our lives. Is it a good thing?

As automation removes humans from the loop, the costs for human labor will gradually fade. A transportation company doesn’t need to pay its self-driving trucks as it used to do its truck drivers. However, it must pay for their maintenance (which still costs less) because the task still involves human labor. That too will cost next to nothing once the development and maintenance of the trucks and their AI software becomes automated as well. The same goes for everything else.

What happens to all the humans?
Eventually, we’ll achieve a self-sustaining economy, where AI and robots perform absolutely every task and there’s zero-need for human labor. Without humans slowing down the process, AI will be able to find better ways to optimize and speed up production. We can already see how internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence can deal with the planet’s food scarcity problem or make healthcare accessible to more people across the world.

Afbeelding

In a fully-automated economy, the cost of living will drop to zero. Money will likely lose its value and raison d’être. What will we do with our 9-5 time then? There are fears that with no tasks left for humans, we’ll have no purpose in life. They’re wrong. In fact, when we no longer worry about putting food on the table, we’ll be able to discover the true meaning of being human.

Some things can never be automated. AI might be able to create art and music that rivals or outperforms that of human artists. But we humans often find attachments to the humans behind those creations rather than the creations themselves. A robot athlete might be better than any human alive, but we like athletes because of their personal struggles, their lives, and how they achieve their perfection through their toil, not how much they score on the field.

We will have plenty of time and opportunity to manifest our creative side, to socialize, to interact with other humans as human beings. We will have no reason to try to make profit off each other, to wage wars over natural resources and wealth. Humanity will thrive when robots take all the jobs.

As DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says, “If AI can help us as a society to not only save the environment, cure disease and explore the universe, but also better understand ourselves — well, that may prove one of the greatest discoveries of them all.”

RELATED: The future of artificial intelligence

The transition can be painful
While the fully-automated economy can perfectly provide the Utopia we deserve, one problem remains. Before we reach the final stage, there will be a period where jobs will become scarce yet not disappear altogether. This means that, while minimal, the costs of life will remain, while without jobs, people won’t be able to pay for those costs.

The fears from automation are rooted in the fact that without jobs, humans won’t be able to afford their lives. It can lead to a spike in inequality. The companies who will drive innovations in artificial intelligence will own the robots and the wealth and the entire economy, while the rest of the population will spiral into poverty and unemployment.

Those fears are well placed. If things go wrong, that’s exactly one of the ways events can unfold, especially if big tech companies will continue the greedy trend of hoarding wealth and making money for the sake of making more money. That will lead to chaos, strife and eventually, their own undoing.

Afbeelding

There are several ways we can deal with the troubles that lie ahead during the transition to full automation. Some experts and companies are exploring basic income, the centuries-old idea of giving unconditional money to all citizens, enough for them to live their lives. Other thought leaders such as Bill Gates are proposing robot taxes, where companies that use automation pay certain fees for the jobs they take away from humans. Other solutions might emerge.

Automation will continue to move forward at an accelerating pace. We don’t need to fear about the destination. Instead, we must prepare ourselves for the rocky road ahead. I’m not worried about the robots taking all the jobs. I’m worried about them leaving some to the humans.

DARPA wants to connect human brains and machines

By: Daniel Cebul, 20-3-18

Afbeelding
DARPA wants to develop ubiquitous noninvasive neurotechnology to integrate humans with machines, but significant obstacles are in the way. (Devrimb)

WASHINGTON ― As unmanned platforms, cyber systems and human-machine partnering become more prevalent in 21st century war fighting, the effectiveness of combat units will be determined by how quickly information can be processed and transmitted between air-breathers and machines. To achieve the high levels of brain-system communication that will be required on future battlefields, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has launched a new program to develop a noninvasive neural interface that will connect soldiers with technology.

The goal of the Next-Generation Nonsurgical Neurotechnology (N³) program is to “pursue a path to a safe, portable neural interface system capable of reading from and writing to multiple points in the brain at once,” according to Dr. Al Emondi, a program manager in DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office.

“We’re asking multidisciplinary teams of researchers to construct approaches that enable precise interaction with very small areas of the brain, without sacrificing signal resolution or introducing unacceptable latency into the N³ system.”

Although technologies that allow for high-quality brain system communications exist today, these invasive techniques are not a practical solution for ubiquitous man-machine communication.

Before soldiers can communicate with their R2-D2 units, DARPA scientists must overcome several significant scientific and engineering challenges.

The most significant challenge, according to a DARPA press release, will be overcoming the physics of scattering and weakening of signals as they pass through skin, skull and brain tissue. If this initial challenge is surmounted, the focus of the program will shift to developing algorithms for encoding and decoding neural signals, evaluating system safety through animal testing and ultimately asking human volunteers to test the technology.

While communication neurotechnology has a stronger foothold in science fiction than reality, Emondi believes devoting resources to the enterprise will spur breakthroughs. “Smart systems will significantly impact how our troops operate in the future, and now is the time to be thinking about what human-machine teaming will actually look like and how it might be accomplished,” he said.

“If we put the best scientists on this problem, we will disrupt current neural interface approaches and open the door to practical, high-performance interfaces.”

DARPA wants the four-year project to conclude with a demonstration of a bidirectional system being used to interface human-machine interactions with unmanned platforms, active cyber defense systems or other Department of Defense equipment.

Recognizing the potentially wide ethical, legal and social implications of such neurotechnology, DARPA is also asking independent legal and ethical experts to advise the program as N³ technologies mature.

There Might Finally Be A Cure For Cancer And It Just Takes One Injection

By Ali Vaqar, 22-3-18

Afbeelding

Cancer is a disease that has plagued humanity for a long time. There are a lot of treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy but these are not cures. And, these treatments have nasty side-effects. As the number of treatment sessions increases, the side-effects become increasingly worse. All this and there is still no guarantee that the treatment will work,

However, there might finally be a cure for cancer. The technique was developed by researchers from Stanford University and it uses two agents which when combined, alert the body’s immune system to the presence of cancer, in order to eliminate it.

A single injection can be all it takes for a solid tumor. This limits the nasty side effects and is more effective than the current therapies. Dr. Ronald Levy was the study’s senior author. He told Medical News Daily, “When we use these two agents together, we see the elimination of tumors all over the body.”

The technique was tested by injecting minute levels of two immune-stimulating agents into malignant solid tumors in mice and it not only treated the tumor it was injected into but distant malignancies in other locations of the body as well. The researchers are confident that it will be able to treat different kinds of cancer.

T-cells have powerful cancer-fighting properties and have been used for a long time in immunotherapy. It boosts the immune system to recognize the cancer and neutralize it. Human clinical trials are underway with 15 low-grade lymphoma patients. These patients were selected as lymphoma is a disease of the immune system and will show the strongest response.

Out of the two, one of the agents has already been approved by the FDA. The other is part of an ongoing clinical trial. Another cause for celebration is that this cure for cancer is not only effective but inexpensive as well. “This method can ‘teach’ immune cells how to fight against that specific type of cancer,” Dr. Levy said, “which then allows them to migrate and destroy all other existing tumors.”

According to Dr. Levy, “This approach bypasses the need to identify tumor-specific immune targets and doesn’t require wholesale activation of the immune system or customization of a patient’s immune cells.” The dual injection includes just one microgram of each substance.

Researchers injected 90 mice who had lymphoma with this mixture and 87 of them became completely cancer-free. The tumors came back in the remaining three and a second injection completely cured them as well. Similar mouse models with breast, skin, and colon cancer have also been tested to show similar results.

However, this cure for cancer can only cure one cancer at a time as T-cells can only target the type of cancer they first experienced. Mouse models which had both lymphoma and colon cancer only saw the lymphoma being cured.

Once the trial is proved to be successful, Dr. Levy believes that this therapy can be used after the surgical removal of a solid tumor to make sure there is no recurrence. It can even take out budding tumors that occur due to genetic mutation. Dr. Levy said there’s no cancer it couldn’t treat, just so long as the immune system can infiltrate it.

The cure for cancer is an exciting prospect and it will save millions of lives all around the world.

Professor Ole-Christoffer Granmo has, in secret, developed a solution which will be quicker, simpler, and more precise than established methods for self-learning machines. The results were presented at a seminar at the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research.

Professor Ole-Christoffer Granmo surprised everyone by presenting a new and simple method for formulae (algorithms) for machines with artificial intelligence at the anniversary celebration for UiA’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research.

“If the next step in the research confirms my findings, this research can be called ‘groundbreaking’,” says the researcher.

Granmo is Professor at the University of Agder (UiA) and Director at the Centre for Artificial Intellignce Research (CAIR) at UiA.

Whilst researchers from around the world sit immersed in artificial intelligence and compete to find formulae (algorithms) with the help of established techniques, Ole-Christoffer Granmo has invented an entirely new one.

During the last year, he has worked with theories from the Soviet Union of the 1950s. Using the Russian mathematician Michael Lvovitch Tsetlin and his experiments training rats as a starting point, Granmo has developed a Tsetlin machine built using quite different principles than those used by today’s leading engineers working within artificial intelligence.

The Tsetlin Machine has provided better results in four different experiments than the established artificial intelligence formulae.

“This solution is quicker, simpler, and more precise than earlier methods,” says Granmo.

He presented the results at the one-year anniversary celebration of UiA’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR). In so doing, he surprised both UiA colleagues and other experts attending the seminar.

“The Tsetlin Machine will be a completely new tool for artificial language, picture understanding, pattern recognition, reasoning, planning, and diagnostics,” says Granmo.

Competition for new findings
The race for new findings within artificial intelligence is now going so quickly that Granmo, immediately after the presentation at the University of Agder, clicked on the send button in order to ensure that the research article would be published as quickly as possible.

In addition, he has two new research articles that he is working on. They will be finalised and sent to publishers shortly.

Replacing an old solution
The world is experiencing a new industrial revolution, this time with artificial intelligence as its driving force. Great steps forward have been taken within only a short period of time. The researchers themselves have been surprised at the advanced tasks that artificial intelligence is capable of solving.

A significant amount of calculating power and considerable data access are prerequisites for the many breakthroughs in the use of networks with artificial neurons. These work together in clusters of computers with GPUs (Graphics Processing Units), and it is the GPUs which stand for the computing power.

Granmo and his colleagues at UiA’s researcher centre also work with such networks, for example, in diagnosis at Sørlandet Hospital and dam control at Agder Energi.

The same applies to Google Deepmind’s new machine, Alpha Zero. The Google machine was launched before Christmas 2017 and is one of the latest additions in this development – a machine which is learning, by itself, to play chess.

The Tsetlin Machine is simpler
“We know that the established method works, but there are also various problems with it. The method requires a lot of computing power. In addition, researchers do not always understand why and how it works. Therefore, we cannot explain this solution fully,” says Granmo.

Yet another problem is that the mathematical formulae in the established solutions are not designed for bits. As a result, they do not suit modern computers. Researchers have tried to develop new computers, but have not, as of now, succeeded.

“I wanted to make something which would suit today’s computers, and therefore it had to work with bits. In addition, I wanted to use simple mathematics so that the process can be both understood and explained,” says Granmo.

Maths and sentence logic
Tsetlin’s experiments training rats was based on the principle of punishment and reward. Granmo has transferred this concept to the Tsetlin Machine.

The Tsetlin Machine uses a number to remember experiences. The machine has learnt picture recognition with the help of adding or subtracting from a number.

In addition, the machine is controlled by advanced sentence logic.

“The basis of the whole thing is sentence logic and mathematical knowledge on a first-class level,” says Granmo.

Professor trance
Granmo works in research groups with expertise in several areas within the field of artificial intelligence. However, this time he has worked completely alone.

“Everything was ready in my own head. It is a solution that I have been thinking about for a long while, not least because it is so simple and elegant,” says Granmo.

The computer is placed in the bedroom and carries out experiments and processes through the night. Sometimes, he gets up in the middle of the night to note down something that he has thought, or to read through a result or adjust something.

In the daytime, he might perhaps put the coffee on but forget to put the carafe underneath the coffee maker.

“When I am involved in processes like this, I close the world out. Then I can get through perhaps a hundred different ideas during just a few weeks. It is almost a trance-like state,” says the researcher.

Comprehensive testing
After three weeks being in concentrated creative mode after Easter last year, Granmo emerged with the solution. He has carried out four case studies and almost a thousand tests, with pattern recognition and problem-solving in each of them. All experiments have been carried out both with the new Tsetlin method and the established one.

“In order to avoid random results, I carry out my experiments a hundred to a thousand times according to how complex the studies are,” he says.

Astounding results
The results are astounding. The Tsetlin Machine beats the established methods for both precision and speed in pattern recognition.

“This find means that everyone gets a new tool to work with. The tool can be used on language, power production and the understanding of pictures, for example in the interpretation of X-rays,” he says.

The next stage will be to make a deep-learning Tsetlin Machine. If Granmo succeeds, a great deal suggests that the established methods which Google Deepmind uses, for example, become old-fashioned.

“You will always prefer to work with solutions which are simple, understandable, and precise, and if the next stage confirms the finds from my first experiments, there will likely be others who prefer this method for making new formulae for artificial intelligence,” he says.

Lockheed Martin Now Has a Patent For Its Potentially World Changing Fusion Reactor

Joseph Trevithick, Mar 26, 2018

Afbeelding

When it first announced the project, the company said it could have a working prototype of the revolutionary power source as early as 2019.

Lockheed Martin has quietly obtained a patent associated with its design for a potentially revolutionary compact fusion reactor, or CFR. If this project has been progressing on schedule, the company could debut a prototype system that size of shipping container, but capable of powering a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier or 80,000 homes, sometime in the next year or so.

The patent, for a portion of the confinement system, or embodiment, is dated Feb. 15, 2018. The Maryland-headquartered defense contractor had filed a provisional claim on April 3, 2013 and a formal application nearly a year later. Our good friend Stephen Trimble, chief of Flightglobal's Americas Bureau, subsequently spotted it and Tweeted out its basic details.

In 2014, the company also made a splash by announcing they were working on the device at all and that it was the responsibility of its Skunk Works advanced projects office in Palmdale, California. At the time, Dr. Thomas McGuire, head of the Skunk Works’ Compact Fusion Project, said the goal was to have a working reactor in five years and production worthy design within 10.

[...]

Below is a video presentation that Lockheed Martin released in 2014 in which Dr. McGuire explains the basics of nuclear fusion and his reactor design.

25 March 2018, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Following three years of extensive research, Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) physicist Dr. Uriel Levy and his team have created technology that will enable our computers —and all optic communication devices— to run 100 times faster through terahertz microchips.

Until now, two major challenges stood in the way of creating the terahertz microchip: overheating and scalability.

However, in a paper published this week in Laser and Photonics Review, Dr. Levy, head of HU’s Nano-Opto Group and HU emeritus professor Joseph Shappir have shown proof of concept for an optic technology that integrates the speed of optic (light) communications with the reliability—and manufacturing scalability—of electronics.

Optic communications encompass all technologies that use light and transmit through fiber optic cables, such as the internet, email, text messages, phone calls, the cloud and data centers, among others. Optic communications are super fast but in microchips they become unreliable and difficult to replicate in large quanitites.

Now, by using a Metal-Oxide-Nitride-Oxide-Silicon (MONOS) structure, Levy and his team have come up with a new integrated circuit that uses flash memory technology —the kind used in flash drives and discs-on-key— in microchips. If successful, this technology will enable standard 8-16 gigahertz computers to run 100 times faster and will bring all optic devices closer to the holy grail of communications: the terahertz chip.

As Dr. Uriel Levy shared, “this discovery could help fill the ‘THz gap’ and create new and more powerful wireless devices that could transmit data at significantly higher speeds than currently possible. In the world of hi-tech advances, this is game-changing technology,"

Meir Grajower, the leading HU PhD student on the project, added, "It will now be possible to manufacture any optical device with the precision and cost-effectiveness of flash technology".

Coming soon to a chip near you…

Afbeelding
64 microscopisch kleine computers (links).

This Ultra-Thin Material Can Stop Bullets by Hardening Like a Diamond

By Paul Ratner - December 30, 2017

Afbeelding
CUNY researchers transformed the honeycombed graphene into the diamond-like material diamene. Credit: Ella Maru Studio

Researchers from The City University of New York (CUNY) have figured out that if you stack two layers of graphene, the new material it can harden to a diamond-like consistency upon impact. Where is that quality useful? In bullet-proof armor, which tends to be quite heavy, but doesn’t have to be if this graphene-based material is employed.

Graphene, the world’s strongest material, is made up of carbon atoms that are linked together in a honeycomb pattern. It can be produced in one-atom-thick sheets.

The new material, conceived of by CUNY associate professor Angelo Bongiorno, consists of two sheets of graphene and is called diamine. It’s comparable to foil in lightness and flexibility. But when a sudden mechanical pressure hits it, the material can temporarily become harder than a diamond.

"Graphite and diamonds are both made entirely of carbon, but the atoms are arranged differently in each material, giving them distinct properties such as hardness, flexibility and electrical conduction," explained Bongiorno. "Our new technique allows us to manipulate graphite so that it can take on the beneficial properties of a diamond under specific conditions."

The researchers see applications of the material in wear-resistant protective coatings and ultra-light bullet-proof films.

Elisa Riedo, professor of physics and the project's lead researcher, says this is the thinnest film that has the “stiffness and hardness of diamond” that’s ever been created.

"Previously, when we tested graphite or a single atomic layer of graphene, we would apply pressure and feel a very soft film,” she added. “But when the graphite film was exactly two-layers thick, all of a sudden we realized that the material under pressure was becoming extremely hard and as stiff, or stiffer, than bulk diamond."

What’s curious, the effect of hardening only takes place when two sheets of graphene are used. It can’t be any more or less.

You can read the study here, in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Gedachtenlezen: tekst schrijven met gedachten nu mogelijk

Door Germen · Gepubliceerd 4 april 2018

Afbeelding

Interessante tijden…

The brain is a complex network containing billions of neurons, where each of these neurons communicates simultaneously with thousands of other via their synapses (links). However, the neuron actually collects its many synaptic incoming signals through several extremely long ramified "arms" only, called dendritic trees.

In 1949 Donald Hebb's pioneering work suggested that learning occurs in the brain by modifying the strength of the synapses, whereas neurons function as the computational elements in the brain. This has remained the common assumption until today.

Using new theoretical results and experiments on neuronal cultures, a group of scientists, led by Prof. Ido Kanter, of the Department of Physics and the Gonda (Goldschmied) Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University, has demonstrated that the central assumption for nearly 70 years that learning occurs only in the synapses is mistaken.

In an article published today in the journal Scientific Reports, the researchers go against conventional wisdom to show that learning is actually done by several dendrites, similar to the slow learning mechanism currently attributed to the synapses.

"The newly discovered process of learning in the dendrites occurs at a much faster rate than in the old scenario suggesting that learning occurs solely in the synapses. In this new dendritic learning process, there are a few adaptive parameters per neuron, in comparison to thousands of tiny and sensitive ones in the synaptic learning scenario," said Prof. Kanter, whose research team includes Shira Sardi, Roni Vardi, Anton Sheinin, Amir Goldental and Herut Uzan.

The newly suggested learning scenario indicates that learning occurs in a few dendrites that are in much closer proximity to the neuron, as opposed to the previous notion. "Does it make sense to measure the quality of air we breathe via many tiny, distant satellite sensors at the elevation of a skyscraper, or by using one or several sensors in close proximity to the nose? Similarly, it is more efficient for the neuron to estimate its incoming signals close to its computational unit, the neuron," says Kanter. Hebb's theory has been so deeply rooted in the scientific world for 70 years that no one has ever proposed such a different approach. Moreover, synapses and dendrites are connected to the neuron in a series, so the exact localized site of the learning process seemed irrelevant.

Another important finding of the study is that weak synapses, previously assumed to be insignificant even though they comprise the majority of our brain, play an important role in the dynamics of our brain. They induce oscillations of the learning parameters rather than pushing them to unrealistic fixed extremes, as suggested in the current synaptic learning scenario.

The new learning scenario occurs in different sites of the brain and therefore calls for a reevaluation of current treatments for disordered brain functionality. Hence, the popular phrase "neurons that fire together wire together," summarizing Donald Hebb's 70-year-old hypothesis, must now be rephrased. In addition, the learning mechanism is at the basis of recent advanced machine learning and deep learning achievements. The change in the learning paradigm opens new horizons for different types of deep learning algorithms and artificial intelligence based applications imitating our brain functions, but with advanced features and at a much faster speed.

The World’s First Floating Space Hotel Is Coming

By Jackie Caradonio on April 5, 2018

Slated to open in 2021, Aurora Station is now taking reservations.

Ever since Apollo 14 astronaut Alan Shepard sent a golf ball soaring through outer space from the surface of the moon, intrepid travelers have been anxiously waiting for space tourism to take off. But the industry—for lack of funding and technology but certainly not for lack of interest—has suffered from a near-universal failure to launch.

At last, however, it appears that space may soon be within reach, with SpaceX already successfully launching seven rockets this year—and Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic making strides of their own. Turning the prospect of space travel into more than a mere joyride, meanwhile, is Orion Span, a new company that claims to be building the first-ever “luxury space hotel.”

Aurora Station is perhaps better described as a modular space station than a hotel, featuring just four guest suites and measuring a total of only 455 square feet (that’s roughly the size of a Gulfstream G550). A crew of two will host the interstellar visitors on 12-day journeys, leading them in research and experiments—such as fruits and vegetables—and introducing them to day-to-day life on a space station.

“The premise of Aurora Station is for guests to live, feel, and breath what it’s like to be an astronaut,” says Frank Bunger, CEO of Orion Span. That means 24/7 weightlessness—and plenty of freeze-dried food and Tang, too. “It’s not going to be five-star dining,” Bunger warns. “Fire and gas don’t work the same way in space as they do on Earth.”

But with the hotel orbiting at 200 miles above the Earth’s surface and going around the Earth every 90 minutes, food will likely be the last thing on anyone’s mind. “People will spend more time looking out the window than anything else,” Bunger predicts.

Guests will travel from Earth to Aurora Station via a 30-minute rocket flight. (Orion Span has yet to officially partner with a spaceflight company, but Bunger says the company is currently in talks with SpaceX and Blue Origin, among other companies). Prior to launch, every visitor will undergo a health screening and three months of training—a tall order for most luxury vacations, but relatively short compared with the 24 months NASA requires of its astronauts. Even more prohibitive will be the price: Reservations—which open today—start at $9.5 million per person. But, Burger notes, that might not be the case for long.

“I think by the mid-2020s, we’re going to see quite a bit of possibilities for getting up there, and the cost going down,” he says. “Our core mission is ultimately to get more people to space—and eventually live in space.” Space condos—and golf courses—here we come.
