En, we ain’t not seen anything yet.

Nabij is hier: vóór 2025.

Elon Musk: Automation Will Force Governments to Introduce Universal Basic Income

Written By Dom Galeon, Sarah Marquart
Published: February 14, 2017 - Last updated: February 15, 2017

In Brief:
  • Elon Musk believes artificial intelligence that is much smarter than the smartest human on Earth could result in dangerous situations.
  • Musk argues that the government must introduce a universal basic income program in order to compensate for automation.
Recently, Elon Musk had the chance to share his thoughts on universal basic income (UBI) at the World Government Summit in Dubai. At the Summit, Musk had the opportunity to talk about the future, and the challenges the world will face in the next hundred years – including artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and the job displacement expected to come with it.

When asked about the challenges civilization is set to face in the near future, Musk began by noting the threat of artificial intelligences that surpass humanity.

He stated, “deep artificial intelligence, or artificial general intelligence, where you can have artificial intelligence that is much smarter than the smartest human on Earth, this is a dangerous situation.”

He continued by noting the importance of advancing our research into AI with caution: “I think we need to be very careful in how we adopt artificial intelligence and that we make sure that researchers don’t get carried away. Sometimes what will happen is a scientist will get so engrossed in their work that they don’t really realize the ramifications of what they’re doing.”

Musk also relayed concerns that autonomous technology will impact jobs, and he noted that we will likely have intelligent, massive-scale automation for transportation relatively soon—within the next few decades, in fact: “Twenty years is a short period of time to have something like 12-15 percent of the workforce be unemployed,” he said, pointing out the extent of how automation will disrupt car-based transportation specifically.

However, displacement due to automation isn’t just limited to transportation, it will sweep across a number of industries, and Musk argues that the government must introduce a UBI program in order to compensate for this. “I don’t think we’re going to have a choice,” he said. “I think it’s going to be necessary. There will be fewer and fewer jobs that a robot cannot do better.”

Musk believes, however, that the issue goes deeper:

[The] much harder challenge is: How will people then have meaning? A lot of people derive meaning from their employment. If you’re not needed, what is the meaning? Do you feel useless? That is a much harder problem to deal with. How do we ensure the future is a future that we want, that we still like?

As the UBI discussion continues, various nations and institutions have already began their own pilot programs to test the model. Finland, for example, started its pioneering UBI program this year, which was launched by the federal social security institution, Kela. It will give out €560 ($587) a month, tax free, to 2,000 Finns that were randomly selected. Similarly, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar’s philanthropic investment firm has given $493,000 to help fund a universal basic income program in Kenya.

In a couple of years (or less?), there might be enough data from these experiments for us to consider just how effective a solution UBI truly is…and whether or not Musk is right.

Einladung zum «Meet up – Artificial Intelligence»

By Lisa Cumming, Thursday 14:15 PM EDT

As AI becomes a more pervasive force within private and public life, key players around the globe are dedicating resources to the implementation of this disruptive technology.

Who’s coming to the table?

While the U.K. wants to lead the conversation around the ethical implications of AI, they definitely aren’t the only contenders. The US and China are the dominating AI powers and Canada, like the U.K., has upped the resource flow. Last year, the Ontario government pledged $30 million to increase the number of graduates studying AI in their bid to sway Amazon.

Canada at large has adopted the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy, worth $125-million, which will hopefully boost the country's reputation in field of AI. Canada’s startups are also gaining global attention for their research on artificial intelligence.

In the East, China is investing billions of dollars in preparation for an AI industry worth $150 billion dollars by 2030. India is copying this strategy, as it hopes to become a leader in AI, by doubling the budget for Digital India to almost USD$477 million and having a government think-tank start a national programme dedicated to AI.

This strategy is more coordinated than that coming out of the White House where, experts say, President Donald Trump has not followed through on former President Obama’s “call to arms” on artificial intelligence, automation and the economy. In the U.S., AI research is boosted by private industry and academia.

Recently the U.K. government announced that, as a part of its investment in AI, about USD$400 million will come from corporations and investment firms, both based in and out of the U.K. A report from the House of Lords Artificial Intelligence Committee states that while the UK can’t outspend leaders like China, they can still become leaders in AI.

Earlier this year the French government announced a nearly USD$1.8 billion investment for AI, that will end when President Emmanuel Macron’s term ends in 2022.

Tel Aviv has an artificial intelligence program at the university and, more broadly, Israeli tech startups are raising billions, with investment in artificial intelligence startups showing rapid growth.

Where to go from here

Tech-focussed countries are investing more and more of their resources in AI, either through the public or private sector. But, in order for countries to ensure that AI is being incorporated properly — as a new report from Brookfield tells us — more voices must join this discussion to ensure that these advancements aren’t happening in an echo chamber.

The AI witnessed at work currently is defined as “Narrow AI,” because it is able to carry out repetitive tasks by learning from patterns found in the data is processes. The AI we’ve only seen in movies — at this point in time — is Artificial General Intelligence, “a single system capable of performing all of the intellectual tasks that a human brain can” and Artificial Superintelligence, “a type of AI that can surpass human intellect and abilities in nearly all areas.”

Organizations around the world are pushing ahead to advance AI beyond the repetitive tasks of Siri and Alexa. With increased funding, and a conversation that includes a wide range of perspectives, we should get there.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is Here!

Peter Morgan - Gepubliceerd op 5 mei 2018

So much talk about AI and robots taking our jobs. Well, guess what, it's already happening and the rate of change will only increase. I estimate that about 5% of jobs have been automated - both blue collar manufacturing jobs, as well as, this time, low-level white collar jobs - think back office, paralegals, etc. There's a thing called RPA, or Robot Process Automation, which is hollowing out back office jobs at an alarming rate, using rules based algorithms and expert systems. This will rapidly change with the introduction of deep learning algorithms into these "robot automation" systems, making them intelligent, capable of making intuitive decisions and therefore replacing more highly skilled and creative jobs. So if we're on an exponential curve, and we've managed to automate around 5% of jobs in the past six years, say, and the doubling is every two years, that means by 2030, almost all jobs will be automated. Remember, the exponential math means 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 100%, with the doubling every two years.

We are definitely going to need a basic income to prevent people (doctors, lawyers, drivers, teachers, scientists, manufacturers, craftsmen) from going homeless once their jobs are automated away. This will need to be worked out at the government level - the sooner the better, because exponentials have a habit of creeping up on people and then surprising society with the intensity and rapidity of the disruptive change they bring. I'm confident that humanity can and will rise to the challenges ahead, and it is well to remember that economics is driven by technology, not the other way around. Education, as usual, is definitely the key to meeting these challenges head on and in a fully informed way. My only concern is when governments will actually start taking this situation seriously enough to start taking bold action. There certainly is no time like the present.

Uber toont nieuw prototype vliegende taxi

Gepubliceerd: 08 mei 2018 18:32 Laatste update: 09 mei 2018 08:07

Afbeelding

By Dave Parrack / May 9, 2018

Google has unveiled plenty of stuff at Google I/O 2018, including Google Assistant’s new-found conversational skills and Gmail’s new Smart Compose feature. However, the biggest talking point of the whole event has to be the innocuous sounding Google Duplex.

Now that we’re all used to talking to Siri, Alexa, and Assistant, Google is developing the next level of artificial intelligence. And Google Duplex will, if it ever actually sees the light of day, make AI almost indistinguishable from humans. Almost.

Duplex Makes Phone Calls on Your Behalf
Google Duplex is, in a nutshell, a scary glimpse of the future. It’s a next-level artificial intelligence. One that’s able to have natural-sounding conversations with real-life human beings. And that enables Duplex to make phone calls on your behalf.

As demonstrated by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Duplex can make appointments for you over the phone. And all without the person on the other end of the call being aware they’re talking to an AI. This video shows Duplex calling a hair salon and a restaurant.

As you can see Google has programmed Duplex to sound human. Instead of monotonal responses there’s human language patterns. And Google has even programmed in the pauses and random words such as “Um” and “Ah” humans use in conversations.

Are We Human, or Are We Duplex?
The upshot is an interaction between an AI and a human which sounds like a conversation between two humans. Which raises an important moral question: Should Google program Duplex to announce that it’s not human at the start of a conversation?

Everyone receives robocalls occasionally. But most of us quickly realize we’re not talking to a human, and react accordingly. The problem is when artificial intelligence sounds as natural as Duplex no one will actually know whether they’re talking to a machine.

The Technological Singularity Is Coming Soon
Google has been developing this technology for some time. And the company maintains that the demo was a real call made to a real business. And while the technology is not yet perfect, Google is set to start testing Duplex within Assistant this summer (2018).

The future is scary. That is if Duplex lives up to the hype, unlike Google Glass. It’s inevitable that artificial intelligence will one day replace humanity as the dominant force on Earth, but, thanks to Duplex, it feels like Google is speeding up our demise right now.

Daaruit :
In a statement today, Oxfordshire-based REL announced a major new joint £26.5 million ($37m) investment in the technology, with contributions from Boeing and Rolls Royce.

The investment puts the aircraft's first flight on track for 2025 provided ground tests of REL's engine - set to begin in 2020 - are successful.

The Flying Tesla is Coming, Sooner or Later

May 13, 2018 - B.J. Murphy

We've all dreamed of owning, or at the very least being a passenger of, a flying car. It's the sci-fi dream that never transpired - until recently, that is. With a growing emphasis of developing flying taxis among several different companies, one wonders if the revolutionary Tesla Motors has plans to join in on this new venture.

As noted in the video above, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had hinted late last year that a flying Tesla vehicle wasn't all that unlikely. Even more impressive was Musk's attempt to one-up the drone advocates by mentioning the application of rocket technology to his company's vehicles!
Elon Musk
@elonmusk
Replying to @elonmusk

Not saying the next gen Roadster special upgrade package *will* definitely enable it to fly short hops, but maybe...

Certainly possible. Just a question of safety. Rocket tech applied to a car opens up revolutionary possibilities.
9:01 PM - Nov 19, 2017
Just recently, Uber had announced plans to introduce their own flying taxis by 2023. That five-year plan may be what's needed to finally ignite Tesla's engines (or, in this case, turn on their batteries) and join this brand new "space race." At this point, it isn't a matter of if Tesla embraces the flying car market, but when.

Sooner or later, a flying Tesla vehicle will emerge and it'll be glorious! So long it's at level 5 automation, of course. We don't need fallible humans behind these wheels.

Scientists Grow Full-Sized, Beating Human Hearts From Stem Cells

May 13, 2018

Of the 4,000 Americans waiting for heart transplants, only 2,500 will receive new hearts in the next year. Even for those lucky enough to get a transplant, the biggest risk is that their bodies will reject the new heart and launch a massive immune reaction against the foreign cells.

To combat the problems of organ shortage and decrease the chance that a patient’s body will reject it, researchers have been working to create synthetic organs from patients’ own cells. Now a team of scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School has gotten one step closer, using adult skin cells to regenerate functional human heart tissue, according to a study published recently in the journal Circulation Research.

Ideally, scientists would be able to grow working hearts from patients’ own tissues, but they’re not quite there yet. That’s because organs have a particular architecture. It's easier to grow them in the lab if they have a scaffolding on which the cells can build, like building a house with the frame already constructed.

Afbeelding

In their previous work, the scientists created a technique in which they use a detergent solution to strip a donor organ of cells that might set off an immune response in the recipient. They did that in mouse hearts, but for this study, the researchers used it on human hearts. They stripped away many of the cells on 73 donor hearts that were deemed unfit for transplantation.

Then the researchers took adult skin cells and used a new technique with messenger RNA to turn them into pluripotent stem cells, the cells that can become specialized to any type of cell in the human body, and then induced them to become two different types of cardiac cells. After making sure the remaining matrix would provide a strong foundation for new cells, the researchers put the induced cells into them.

Afbeelding

For two weeks they infused the hearts with a nutrient solution and allowed them to grow under similar forces to those a heart would be subject to inside the human body. After those two weeks, the hearts contained well-structured tissue that looked similar to immature hearts; when the researchers gave the hearts a shock of electricity, they started beating. While this isn’t the first time heart tissue has been grown in the lab, it’s the closest researchers have come to their end goal: Growing an entire working human heart. But the researchers admit that they’re not quite ready to do that.

They are next planning to improve their yield of pluripotent stem cells (a whole heart would take tens of billions, one researcher said in a press release), find a way to help the cells mature more quickly, and perfecting the body-like conditions in which the heart develops. In the end, the researchers hope that they can create individualized hearts for their patients so that transplant rejection will no longer be a likely side effect.

Extraterrestrial Hunt: US Congress Proposes $10 million Fund To Find Aliens With Artificial Intelligence

On May 13, 2018

Afbeelding

THE US House of Representatives has just proposed a staggering £7.3million ($10million) in funding to aid the NASA’s hunt for signs of the extraterrestrial life in the cold depths of space. The proposed bill includes two years of funding to “search for technosignatures” from potentially intelligent and developed alien species.

The techno signatures would include radio waves which an advanced civilization could be intentionally blasting into space much like humans are. The Congress bill marks the first time in 25 years the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is being given proper funds. However renowned astronomer Dr Jill Tarter, former director of the SETI Institute, warned the bill is far from a done deal.

She said: “This is an authorisation bill, not an appropriation bill. Even if it passes, the appropriators may not provide any SETI funding in their bill. But if they do, that would be a very big deal.”

The search for alien life outside of our solar system has generally been focused on the detection of artificially created radio waves. But a revision of SETI’s mission statement could lead to a brand new approach in the hunt for extraterrestrials.

In order to avoid false positives and misleading signals, SETI could employ the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to sift through the noise. Dr Tarter has pointed out that UFO hunters often look for signs of intelligence and technology in space that are similar to our own.

But the expert argued the hunt for technosignatures is a limited approach because non-human intelligence, technology and language appears in all shapes and forms. For example, chimpanzees have been recognised to have culture and use tools. As such, alien intelligence could take on a completely different and unrecognisable from somewhere out in space.

Astrobiologist Nathalie Cabrol, who organised a “Decoding Alien Intelligence” workshop at SETI, said the time has come to search for life “as we do not know it”. In 1992 NASA initiated the SETI programme to build the required instruments to scan the cosmos for signs of extraterrestrial life.

However, the SETI initiative was shut down just a year later by the Nevada Senator Richard Bryan. But the Congress bill now promises a breath of fresh air for the SETI Dr Tarter stressed.

She said: “If it passes, it would definitely be a sea-change in Congressional attitude since Senator Bryan terminated NASA’s SETI program, the High Resolution Microwave Survey, in 1993.”

The sizeable budget would allow the SETI to build new instrumentation and collect more data on a global scale. Dr Tarter added: “By smoothing out the funding roller coaster that has characterised this research field from the beginning, it will be possible to attract the best and brightest minds with the best ideas from everywhere, and commit to the long-term search efforts that might be required for success.”

Rocket Plan: How 3-D Printing Is Unlocking A New Space Race

Jennifer Johnson - May 16, 2018

Afbeelding
Relativity Space plans to use 3-D printing to make a rocket.

A new space race is in the works, thanks to 3-D printing. This time around, it’s not about large government agencies vying to blast human astronauts into uncharted territory. Instead, today’s competitors are aerospace startups like Rocket Lab and Relativity Space that are trying to launch satellites into orbit.

Demand for launches of small satellites — which can track weather systems, take snapshots of the Earth and beam internet to remote locations — is expected to skyrocket in the next few years. An estimated 263 launches will take place in 2018, according to data from aerospace engineering firm SpaceWorks. However, the company believes that a total of 2,600 nano and microsatellites will need to be launched in the next five years. To achieve this, the global space industry needs a greater number of available rockets that can ferry these devices up to orbit. And they’ve got to be manufactured quickly and cheaply.

The biggest barriers to space right now are frequency and cost”, explains Peter Beck, CEO of Rocket Lab, the Huntington Beach-headquartered rocket maker striving to improve access to commercial space flight. “Small satellites can wait years to get on orbit, often flying as secondary payloads on large launch vehicles. This leaves them susceptible to delays caused by the primary payload.”

Rocket Lab is able to solve the launch frequency issue by creating a standardized small launch vehicle that can be mass-produced. The company’s Electron rocket reached orbit for the first time in January and successfully deployed three tiny CubeSats for customers Planet Labs and Spire Global. Electron’s next launch is scheduled for later this month, and it’ll also deploy research CubeSats for NASA this year. With its launch calendar filling up, Rocket Lab is relying on 3-D printing to make sure its model of engine production is scalable.

“With 3-D printing, Rocket Lab can produce an engine in days, not the months required of traditional engine manufacturing techniques,” says Beck. “By speeding up the manufacturing process, we are also able to reduce cost.”

Relativity Space, the orbital launch company cofounded by a pair of former SpaceX and Blue Origin employees, wants to take automated rocket production even further. Around 95% of its Terran 1 midsize rocket will be 3-D printed using Stargate, the company’s purpose-built metal 3-D printer. Eventually, Relativity aims to print an entire rocket in 60 days. This will be made possible, in part, by Terran’s pared-down design. Most modern rockets are made up of more than 100,000 individual components, but Terran 1 will incorporate fewer than 1,000.

Designed to carry payloads of up to 1,250kg, Relativity’s rocket is at the larger end of the small satellite launch spectrum. As a point of comparison, Electron’s maximum payload is 225kg, while Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne can carry payloads of up to 300kg. According to Tim Ellis, Relativity’s CEO, there is a growing demand for launches of mid-sized satellites and multi-satellite constellations that is not being met by other providers. Stargate will be instrumental in ensuring they can build launch vehicles capable of accommodating these larger payloads.

“Making rockets that are quite a bit bigger than the other small launchers is traditionally much harder, because you have a factory full of cooling equipment and huge machinery,” Ellis explains. “But with 3-D printing, we’re able to circumvent that and make rockets faster, with a smaller, leaner factory and fewer processes.

In March, Relativity announced it had signed a 20-year partnership agreement with NASA’s Stennis Space Center for an exclusive lease of its 24-acre E4 Test Complex in Mississippi. The deal gives Relativity access to four engine test chambers, which would allow the company to develop enough engines to build 36 rockets per year. According to Ellis, Terran 1’s first launch should take place around 2020.

For Relativity, deploying satellites in low earth orbit is just the first step in a much larger plan for space exploration. Eventually the company hopes to send 3-D printers to Mars and other off-world colonies so that astronauts can repair rockets and build the infrastructure necessary to sustain a human society. Of course, in the early days of a Martian settlement there isn’t going to be a substantial human workforce to staff factories or execute civil engineering projects. This is where a 3-D printer comes in handy.

“Since there is a labor shortage, you want to have a very high output per person, as well as lots of automation and the ability to make a wide range of products,” Ellis explains. “You will also want factories that are lightweight and have a small footprint. All of these boxes are ticked by a very large and sophisticated metal 3-D printer.”

In the meantime, the parameters that will make 3-D printers integral to living off-world — from fast production rates to low labour costs and simplified manufacturing steps — will also unlock new business models on Earth. For competitors in the new space race, it pays to have your eyes on the skies and your feet on the ground.

May 17, 2018, University of Kent

Scientists at the University of Kent have made a significant discovery about how the vitamin content of some plants can be improved to make vegetarian and vegan diets more complete.

Vitamin B12 (known as cobalamin) is an essential dietary component but vegetarians are more prone to B12 deficiency as plants neither make nor require this nutrient.

But now a team, led by Professor Martin Warren at the University's School of Biosciences, has proved that common garden cress can indeed take up cobalamin.

The amount of B12 absorbed by garden cress is dependent on the amount present in the growth medium, and the Kent team was able to confirm B12 uptake by showing that the nutrient ends up in the leaf.

The observation that certain plants are able to absorb B12 is important as such nutrient-enriched plants could help overcome dietary limitations in countries such as India, which have a high proportion of vegetarians and may be significant as a way to address the global challenge of providing a nutrient-complete vegetarian diet, a valuable development as the world becomes increasingly meat-free due to population expansion.

The Kent scientists worked with biology teachers and year 11 and 12 pupils at Sir Roger Manwood's School in Sandwich to investigate the detection and measurement of B12 in garden cress.

The pupils grew garden cress containing increasing concentrations of vitamin B12. After seven days growth, the leaves from the seedlings were removed, washed and analysed.

The seedlings were found to absorb cobalamin from the growth medium and to store it in their leaves. To confirm this initial observation, the scientists at Kent then made a type of vitamin B12 that emits fluorescent light when activated by a laser. This fluorescent B12 was fed to the plants and it was found to accumulate within a specialised part of the leaf cell called a vacuole, providing definitive evidence that some plants can absorb and transport cobalamin.

Vitamin B12 is unique among the vitamins because it is made only by certain bacteria and therefore has to undergo a journey to make its way into more complex multi-cellular organisms. The research described in the paper highlights how this journey can be followed using the fluorescent B12 molecules, which can also be used to help understand why some people are more prone to B12-deficiency.

The discovery also has implications for combating some parasitic infections. Not only did the researchers demonstrate that some plants can absorb vitamin B12, they were also able to use the same technique to follow the movement of fluorescent B12 molecules into worms. These results demonstrate that this is a powerful model to learn about how B12 is absorbed and, as worms must use a different absorption system to mammalian systems, there is the possibility of exploiting this difference to try and treat worm-based parasites such as hook worms.

The research is now published in the journal Cell Chemical Biology.

Positron Dynamics’s tijdschema ziet er grofweg als volgt uit;
