Using artificial intelligence to clone voices is accelerating at a fast pace. Chinese tech giant Baidu announced that it takes just 3.7 seconds of audio to clone a voice. Only a year ago, the company's voice cloning tool called Deep Voice required 30 minutes of audio to clone a voice. This is alarming because this technology, if it falls in wrong hands, can be misused.

Google launched a new AI voice synthesizer as part of its suite of machine learning cloud tools. The service, named Cloud Text-to-Speech, will be available for any developer or business that needs voice synthesis on tap, whether that's for an app, website, or virtual assistant. Cloud Text-to-Speech is powered by WaveNet, software created by Google's UK-based AI subsidiary DeepMind.

Lyrebird, an artificial intelligence company in Canada, developed algorithms that can mimic anyone's voice using only 60 seconds of audio.

Adobe has voice synthesis divisions working on developing realistic computer generated speech.

"Like all artificial intelligence algorithms, the more data voice cloning tools such as Deep Voice receive to train with the more realistic the results. When you listen to several cloning examples, it's easier to appreciate the breadth of what the technology can do including being able to switch the gender of the voice as well as alter accents and styles of speech," writes Bernard Marr in Forbes.

Voice generation technology now allows Google Assistant to offer celebrity cameos. Aside from singing "Happy birthday" on demand, John Legend's voice will answer questions such as "Is it going to rain tomorrow?"

However, benefits of artificial voice also come with dangers. Some people might use it to mislead others. As the AI algorithms get better, it creates more opportunities to be used to fabricate the truth.

Research has shown that our brains don't register significant differences between real and artificial voices. In fact, it's harder for our brains to distinguish fake voices than to detect fake images.

As the new artificial voice systems only require little audio to get trained in order to create a voice that's similar to the speaking style and tone of an individual, the opportunity for abuse increases.

kat - de boodschap is dat het niet de hond is die het doet;
krabt - in het voorgaande werd al duidelijk dat de krullen van de trap gingen, maar nog niet hoe;
krullen - de lak blijft onaangetast;

Blazing Supersonic Plane Could Zoom From NY to Paris in 90 Min

May 13th 19 - Victor Tangermann

Afbeelding

Going Supersonic
An American aerospace startup called Hermeus has revealed an early concept of a supersonic commercial airplane that could breeze over the Atlantic in just 90 minutes at speeds of up to Mach 5 (almost 4,000 mph) — or twice as fast as the iconic Concorde.

It’s unlikely we will see a working prototype any time soon, but Hermeus has just closed a first round of funding, according to Ars Technica, which could allow the company to come up with a propulsion demonstrator.

Ultra Fast
Hermeus isn’t the only player in the game. Boom Supersonic, a different American startup, is also working on a Mach 2.2 supersonic jet with space for 55 passengers — that’s only a little faster than the legendary Concorde, which topped out at Mach 2.04 during its decades of operation.

Boom wants to bring supersonic flight to the masses by the mid-2020s, according to a December 2017 announcement. It has even collected orders for some 76 planes and has received backing from Richard Branson’s Virgin Group.

Planes, Drones, and AI Machines
But going from Mach 2 to Mach 5 is not an easy undertaking. Hermeus is hoping to pull from existing technologies to make its insanely fast passenger plane a reality, including titanium materials and cutting edge rocketry.

It’s impossible to tell what the future of air travel will look like. If supersonic airplanes aren’t it, SpaceX founder Elon Musk has pushed for the idea that we’ll go between Earthly destinations in rockets that can technically take us to Mars.

ONE GIANT LEAK Secret Nasa plans for lunar base and 37 rocket launches to the Moon revealed by leak online

Nasa is determined to return man to the Moon in 2024

By Harry Pettit, Senior Digital Technology and Science Reporter | 21st May 2019, 10:17 amUpdated: 22nd May 2019, 9:06 am

NASA'S official plans to build a permanent base on the Moon have leaked online, revealing how and when astronauts will return to the rocky world for the first time in 50 years.

Internal documents show how Nasa wants to launch 37 rockets to the Moon within the next decade, with at least five of these carrying astronauts.

Afbeelding
Key points in Nasa's Moon base plans.

Starting with an unmanned rover in 2023, the space agency is expected to land people on the Moon in 2024.

Nasa will then fire manned missions to Earth's neighbour every year between 2024 and 2028, according to the documents, which were obtained by Arstechnica.

Speaking to The Sun, a Nasa spokeswoman confirmed the documents are real and revealed the plans were briefed today during a public session of the Science Committee to the Nasa Advisory Council (NAC).

They show a decade-long program that culminates with a permanent lunar base, which Nasa will begin building in 2028.

Afbeelding
These official Nasa Moon plans were supposedly circulated to staff last week.

Afbeelding
Nasa wants to stick a robotic rover on the Moon in 2023. It could look something like the £2billion Curiosity Mars rover (artist's impression).

They are in part a response to recent calls from US Vice President Mike Pence to take astronauts back to the Moon.

"In the nearly two months since Pence directed Nasa to return to the Moon by 2024, space agency engineers have been working to put together a plan that leverages existing technology, large projects nearing completion, and commercial rockets to bring this about," Arstechnica's Eric Berger wrote.

"Last week, an updated plan that demonstrated a human landing in 2024, annual sorties to the lunar surface thereafter, and the beginning of a Moon base by 2028, began circulating within the agency."

Berger did not say how he obtained the plans, which have not yet been made public.

They do appear to line up with previous statements from Nasa about its lunar program, codenamed Artemis.

As with any space exploration project, the main obstacle is cash.

Nasa reckons it will need £4.5billion to £6.5billion per year on top of Nasa's existing budget of about £16billion.

Boss Jim Bridenstine recently asked for an extra £1.3billion in fiscal year 2020 to start developing a lunar lander.

Afbeelding
An orbiting lunar base called Gateway forms part of Nasa's plans. Astronauts will begin building it by 2028 (artist's impression).

The plan also relies heavily on contractors delivering ambitious hardware on time, which has hindered Nasa in the past.

Boeing has been developing the core stage of the agency's next-gen rocket, the Space Launch System, for eight years – but has yet to come up with the goods.

Boeing's handling of the multi-billion-pound contract, which is now twice over budget, has been blasted by Nasa's Inspector General.

Nasa was not immediately available for comment.

130 graden).
"The tunnels offer a perfect radiation shield and a very benign thermal environment," says Robinson. "Once you get down to 2 meters under the surface of the Moon, the temperature remains fairly constant, probably around -30 to -40 degrees C."

Helemaal links (A): het Power and Propulsion Element dat Maxar Technologies moet gaan ontwikkelen.

Modern digital computers have changed our lives in a variety of ways, but the technology on which they are built has still some room for improvement. As computational workloads continue to grow due to massive amounts of data and techniques like artificial intelligence, more powerful computing technologies become of paramount importance.

Two of the main pillars of our modern digital computers are the electronic transistor and the von-Neumann computer architecture. While the von-Neumann architecture established the physical separation of computing tasks like storage and processing, transistors are the fundamental building blocks in our digital computers. By cramming ever more transistors on ever smaller chips we have come to build devices like our smartphones with orders of magnitude more computing power than the large computers used by NASA to land the first men on the moon.

But none of these inventions are guaranteed to stay with us forever. In fact, in recent years we have witnessed a renaissance of interest in radically different components and architectures. The future of computing may comprise AI-tailored hardware, in-memory, analogue and quantum computing. At IBM, researchers have been exploring that kind of novel technologies for many years and are broadly investigating what physical concepts could be harnessed to power our future information processing infrastructure.

Now, our team at the IBM Research Lab in Zurich together with our partners from the research lab of Prof. Pavlos Lagoudakis at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and Southampton (a collaboration established within the framework of the European Horizon-2020 training network SYNCHRONICS), has succeeded in building the first ever cascadable, all-optical transistor capable of operating at room temperature. The team achieved this by exploiting the material properties of an organic semiconducting polymer. Based on this material, a microcavity was engineered in which an incoming optical signal (a laser beam) can be switched on and off or amplified by another laser beam.

The work is featured on the cover of the latest edition of the peer-reviewed journal Nature Photonics.

Why it matters
All-optical components that manipulate information with light alone could enable much faster switching and logical operations as well as provide building blocks for new applications like routing “flying qubits” from quantum microwave optical transduction or blind quantum computing. But such all-optical components are very difficult to build. And in fact, efforts to make all-optical computers have been around for about 50 years.

In order to switch or amplify an optical signal with another optical signal, a material that mediates the interaction is needed. It’s just in the quantum nature of light beams that they don’t interact with each other in vacuum. In our transistor, the mediating part is done by quasi-particles known as exciton-polaritons. They arise in an organic semiconductor (methyl-substituted ladder-type poly- [paraphenylene] or MeLPPP) provided by our long-time partner Prof. Ullrich Scherf from the Wuppertal University. We placed a 35 nanometer-thin layer of MeLPPP between two highly reflective mirrors to form an optical cavity in which exciton-polaritons were produced using a laser. An exciton-polariton consists in the superposition of an exciton (an electron-hole pair) and a photon. That’s why our device falls in the category of organic polariton transistors.

Our transistor not only is the first of its kind to work at ambient conditions, it also provides an unprecedented 6500-fold optical signal amplification with a device length of just a few micrometers. That is 330 times higher than the amplification attained by its inorganic counterpart and allows for cascadability, which is a necessary condition to use the transistor for logic gates. In experiments, our device also exhibited the highest net optical gain ever observed for an optical transistor (~10 dB/micrometer).

Furthermore, our transistor features ultrafast switching in the sub-picosecond range, which makes it comparable in terms of multi-terahertz switching speed to some previous all-optical devices with the added advantage that our device doesn’t require cryogenic cooling to operate.

Importantly, our organic polariton transistor gets rid of another limitation present in its inorganic counterparts that is relevant for practical purposes. In inorganic polariton microcavities, the pump laser used to trigger the transistor response must be directed at the device under certain angles only. In our organic device, there’s no specific requirement on the angle of the pump laser which gives much greater flexibility in the geometry of the setting and allows for fiber pig-tailing of the optical device or creating integrated planar circuits with it. Read on to learn how we achieved this.

For the experts: How we did it
In our material, the energy states of exciton-polaritons are given by several so-called polariton branches, which arise from strong light-matter interaction of the cavity photons with the excitons. Our strategy consisted in using the bosonic nature of exciton-polaritons and the occurrence of strong vibrational excitations in our organic semiconductor to trigger an avalanche-like relaxation of the excitons to the lowest polariton branch (ground state). We anticipated this vibron-mediated relaxation channel to be strong enough to outcompete the multiple internal conversion channels in our material. And our expectations were thoroughly confirmed by the experiments.

Achieving truly giant amplification
In a first step, we used a pump laser to produce a large population of hot excitons. We tuned the wavelength of this laser to produce excitons with an energy exactly one vibronic energy quantum above the lower polariton branch in our microcavity. The vibronic mode we exploited here corresponds to a “breathing mode” in which ring-shaped aromatic units within the polymer shrink and expand in a way that resembles a breathing lung. As stated above, we only had to care about the energy of the pump laser photons, but not their in-plane momentum component. This is possible because of the wide spread in the momentum distribution of the strongly localized excitons in our material. That means that the stringent phase-matching requirement typical of inorganic microcavities is irrelevant in our system, and it can be pumped at almost any angle.

With increasing pump excitation density, we observed a transition from the linear to the non-linear regime, with the threshold density lying at roughly 82 μJ cm−2. To lower the threshold and further accelerate the relaxation of excitons to the polariton ground state we seeded this ground state with a control beam. This seeding proved very effective in speeding up the relaxation process, in spite of the fact that the excitation density of the control beam was kept constant at about 20 nJ cm−2, more than three orders of magnitude weaker than the non-resonant pump. By seeding the ground polariton state, we observed nearly twice lower threshold for polariton condensation, while the exciton to polariton relaxation rate was increased by a factor of 50 under the same non-resonant optical excitation density.

Ultrafast all-optical switching
Sub-picosecond switching times were achieved thanks to the combination of ultrafast exciton relaxation dynamics, inherent to organic semiconductors, and the sub-picosecond cavity lifetime of our device. In our setup, the pump beam formed the address state that was gated by the control beam. Keeping the switching energy of the control beam at 1 pJ, we attained a maximum extinction ratio (determined as the intensity ratio between the ‘1’ and the ‘0’ state) of 17 dB. The response time for switching between the two logical states was roughly 500 femtoseconds.

Finally, we demonstrated the potential of organic polariton transistors for cascadability by implementing two-stage cascaded amplification. In our scheme, the condensate emission (Address 1) of the first stage is redirected onto the “chip” and amplified further by a second pump. Furthermore, we employed the concept of cascaded amplification to demonstrate OR and AND logic gate operation by coupling three polariton transistors on the same “chip” utilizing a single pump-double probe optical setup.

Summary
Our experiments demonstrate vibron-mediated, dynamic polariton condensation in an organic microcavity at ambient conditions, enabling all-optical polariton amplification, switching at sub-picosecond time scales as well as cascadability and OR and AND logic gate operation. Efficient control over the address state permits reliable switching between ‘low’ and ‘high’ logic levels with ultrafast transient response, while the giant net gain of the structure gives rise to record optical amplification at the micrometer scale.

The developed principles of dynamic polariton condensation in combination with the recently observed frictionless polariton flow in organic microcavities [Lerario et al., Nat. Phys. 2017], pave the way for on-chip circuitry with ultrafast, all-optical, logic operability. If one could furthermore exploit strong polariton-polariton interactions, where important progress has just been shown earlier this year with inorganic microcavities [Delteil et al., Nat. Mat. 2019 and Munoz-Matutano et al., Nat. Mat. 2019], such transistors would be able to operate with only a few photons, and thereby drastically lowering the required switching energy to the attojoule regime.

See China’s Newly Unveiled Maglev Train

May 24th 19__Kristin Houser

A new high-speed transportation system is taking shape in China.

On Thursday, state-owned China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) unveiled a prototype for a new high-speed magnetic-levitation — better known as “maglev” — train that could dramatically cut travel times in the nation.

“The prototype has already achieved static levitation and is in ideal condition,” CRCC Qingdao’s deputy chief engineer Ding Sansan said at a news conference, according to a report by China Daily. “We are building an experimental center and a trial production center for high-speed maglev trains and expect to put them into operation in the second half of the year.”

Instead of using wheels and a track, a maglev train floats on a magnetically powered cushion of air. This reduces friction and allows the craft to reach incredibly fast speeds, like the 430 kilometers per hour (267 miles per hour) top speed of a maglev already in operation in Shanghai.

This new design would be able to far exceed the speed of that maglev, reaching a top speed of 600 kilometers per hour (372 miles per hour). Ding used a theoretical journey between Beijing and Shanghai to show how this could dramatically decrease travel times.

“It takes about four-and-a-half hours by plane including preparation time for the journey; about five-and-a-half hours by high-speed rail, and [would] only [take] about three-and-a-half hours by maglev,” he said, according to a South China Morning Post report.

US tech giant Intel Corp. said Tuesday it has released a new generation of processors that bring broad-scale artificial intelligence to the PC for the first time. The processors were developed by Intel's Israel team in Haifa.

The new 10th Gen Intel Core processors, code-named Ice Lake, are now shipping and are targeted to laptops and PCs. The processors will be in computers by the end of 2019, the company said in a statement.

The processors are built on the company's 10nm (nanometers) process technology, new "Sunny Cove" core architecture and new Gen11 graphics architecture. They optimize built-in intelligent performance features that make it possible for PCs to quickly learn and adapt to what users do.

The processors have accelerated AI performance, twice the graphic performance and almost three times faster wireless speeds than the previous generation of processors created by Intel, the statement said.

They also include the Thunderbolt 3 technology, which enables the motherboard to be smaller, allowing for more compact encasements and smaller and longer lasting batteries,

The processors also include Wi-Fi 6 technologies, which is the next generation of cellular interconnectivity. This will make the PCs with these processors faster, as well as cheaper and with lower electricity consumption, the company said.

"No one wants to compromise; people want it all: battery life, performance, responsiveness, connectivity and slick form factors," said Gregory Bryant, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group, in the statement.

Human gamers know just how hard it is to win a new spin on the classic computer game Quake: In a mazelike arena, they must work with other players to capture floating flags—all while dodging deadly gunfire. Now, for the first time, artificial intelligence (AI) has mastered teamwork in a complex first-person video game, coordinating its actions with both human and computer teammates to consistently beat opponents.

"The scale of the experiments is remarkable," says Michael Littman, an AI expert at Brown University. Getting AI agents to work together is incredibly tough, he says.

Although AI can drive cars and easily defeat the world’s greatest chess and Go players one on one, researchers have struggled to get it to master teamwork. The practice may seem intuitive to us, but predicting how others will behave—a crucial component of working on a team—adds a whole new level of complexity and uncertainty for AI to deal with.

In the new study, researchers got AI bots to teach each other to work as a team. Their classroom was a simplified version of 1999 first-person shooter, Quake III Arena. The game involves two teams that navigate around a 3D map to retrieve a flag from their opponent’s base and return it to theirs. The team with the most captures after 5 minutes wins. Players also fire a laser to tag enemies, sending them back to their home base.

To train the AI to work as a team, the scientists created 30 different bots and pitted them against each other in a series of matches on randomly generated maps. The bots trained using brain-inspired algorithms called neural networks, which learn from data by altering the strength of connections between artificial neurons. The only data the bots had to learn from was the first-person visual perspective of their character and game points, awarded for things like picking up flags or tagging opponents.

Initially the bots acted randomly. But when their actions scored points, the connections that led to the behavior were strengthened through a process called reinforcement learning. The training program also culled the bots that tended to lose and replaced them with mutated copies of top performers inspired by the way genetic variation and natural selection help animals evolve.

After 450,000 games, the researchers arrived at the best bot, which they named For The Win (FTW). They then tested it in various matches with a mirror FTW, an FTW bot missing a crucial learning element, the game’s in-built bots, and humans. Teams of FTW bots consistently outperformed all other groups, though humans paired with FTW bots were able to beat them 5% of the time, they report today in Science.

The FTW bots learned to play seamlessly with humans and machines, and they even developed classic cooperative strategies, says study co-leader Max Jaderberg, an AI researcher at Google-owned DeepMind in London. Those strategies included following teammates in order to outnumber opponents in later firefights and loitering near the enemy base when their teammate has the flag to immediately grab it when it reappears. In one test, the bots invented a completely novel strategy, exploiting a bug that let teammates give each other a speed boost by shooting them in the back.

"What was amazing during the development of this project was seeing the emergence of some of these high-level behaviors," Jaderberg says. "These are things we can relate to as human players."

The approach is still a long way from working in the real world, Jaderberg adds. But the advance is good for more than computer games. If AI can learn to work in teams, it could make everything from self-driving cars that avoid crashes by coordinating with each other to robotic surgical assistants that help out doctors during procedures.

Still, Littman warns against extrapolating too much from a relatively simple computer simulation. "It could be that the details of this particular game require only a very narrow slice of what we think of as teamwork," he says. And that, he says, means there’s no guarantee the same approach would teach AI to work as a team on other tasks.

Elon Musk warns A.I. could create an ‘immortal dictator from which we can never escape’

Ryan Browne - Published Fri, Apr 6 2018

Superintelligence — a form of artificial intelligence (AI) smarter than humans — could create an “immortal dictator,” billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk warned.

In a documentary by American filmmaker Chris Paine, Musk said that the development of superintelligence by a company or other organization of people could result in a form of AI that governs the world.

“The least scary future I can think of is one where we have at least democratized AI because if one company or small group of people manages to develop godlike digital superintelligence, they could take over the world,” Musk said.

“At least when there’s an evil dictator, that human is going to die. But for an AI, there would be no death. It would live forever. And then you’d have an immortal dictator from which we can never escape.”

The documentary by Paine examines a number of examples of AI, including autonomous weapons, Wall Street technology and algorithms driving fake news. It also draws from cultural examples of AI, such as the 1999 film “The Matrix” and 2016 film “Ex Machina.”

Musk cited Google’s DeepMind as an example of a company looking to develop superintelligence. In 2016, AlphaGo, a program developed by the company, beat champion Lee Se-dol at the board game Go. It was seen a major achievement in the development of AI, after IBM’s Deep Blue computer defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.

Musk said: “The DeepMind system can win at any game. It can already beat all the original Atari games. It is super human; it plays all the games at super speed in less than a minute.”

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO said that artificial intelligence “doesn’t have to be evil to destroy humanity.”

“If AI has a goal and humanity just happens to be in the way, it will destroy humanity as a matter of course without even thinking about it. No hard feelings,” Musk said.

“It’s just like, if we’re building a road and an anthill just happens to be in the way, we don’t hate ants, we’re just building a road, and so, goodbye anthill.”

Last year, Musk warned that the global race toward AI could result in a third world war. The entrepreneur has also suggested that the emerging technology could pose a greater risk to the world than a nuclear conflict with North Korea.

Musk believes that humans should merge with AI to avoid the risk of becoming irrelevant. He is the co-founder of Neuralink, a start-up that reportedly wants to link the human brain with a computer interface.

He quit the board of OpenAI, a non-profit organization aimed at promoting and developing AI safely, in February.

Technologisch tirannie: ultieme controle over ieder mens

Ultieme, totalitaire controle over ieder mens. ALLES.

Robots gaan over mensenlevens beschikken

‘Fout’ gedrag eenvoudig bestraft

‘Big Brother in aantrekkelijker jasje’

Stephen Chen, Published: 12:00am, 27 May, 2019

Chinese scientists say they have created a transistor that will increase the performance of microchips exponentially and dramatically reduce their energy use.

The most advanced computer chips on the market today use seven-nanometre transistors. Professor Yin Huaxiang said his team had developed 3nm transistors – about the width of a human DNA strand – and that tens of billions of them could fit on a fingernail-size chip.

The smaller transistors become, the more can be fitted onto chips, increasing the performance of a processor exponentially, said Yin, deputy director of microelectronics device and integrated technology at the Institute of Microelectronics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.

Transistors are the building blocks of processors. Those built with 3nm transistors would increase computing speed and cut energy consumption, Yin said. So, a smartphone user, for instance, could play games that demanded lots of computing power all day without the need to recharge batteries.

The Chinese team, whose research was published in part in peer-reviewed journal IEEE Electron Device Letters this month, had to overcome major obstacles, Yin said. One was the Boltzmann Tyranny, 19th century Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann’s description of a problem involving the distribution of electrons in a space.

For chip developers, this meant that as more and smaller transistors went into microchips, the heat generated by the electricity the transistors needed would burn the chip.

Physicists have proposed solutions to this problem. Yin’s team, using a method known as negative capacitance, was able to power transistors by using half the theoretical minimum amount of electricity required, he said.

Commercialisation could take a few years as the team worked on materials and quality control.

“This is the most exciting part of our work. It is not just another new finding in a laboratory. It has a high potential for real, serious applications,” Yin said. “And we have the patent.”

The breakthrough would put China into a “head-on competition with the world’s top players at the very front line of chip development”, Yin said.

“In the past, we were watching others fight. Now we are fighting the others.”

In Beijing, a Tsinghua University professor who studied future chip technology said China’s development was rapidly catching up with Western countries as a result of the trade tariffs war being fought out by Beijing and Washington.

“A gap remains, [and] it is unlikely to close overnight with a single breakthrough,” said the academic who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the work.

While there are transistors about the size of an atom – half a nanometre – in development in China, other countries have joined the race to bring 3nm transistors to market.

Samsung in South Korea said it planned to complete the development of a 3nm transistor by the first half of next year.

Compared to 7-nm technology, Samsung said a processor built with its 3-nm transistors would use half as much power to achieve a 35 per cent higher performance.

The company did not say when it expected those chips to enter production.

Shubha Sharma, Mumbai, May 09, 2019 01:00 IST

Engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have developed a microprocessor called AJIT, the first to be conceptualised, designed, developed and manufactured in India. The innovation, which has brought industry, academia and the government together, could reduce the country’s dependence on imports.

The project was funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and IIT Bombay. Powai Labs, a Mumbai-based company, has invested in the venture, and will own, market and support the product.

Prof. Madhav Desai of the electrical engineering department and his team of nine researchers from IIT Bombay designed and developed the processor entirely at the institute. In a sense, the researchers have built the first proof of concept, Prof. Desai told The Hindu. “It is out of the laboratory, but not on the road yet. We are refining it. If successful, it will be mass produced.”

India’s electronics market is expected to reach $400 billion by 2020. Most of the electronic devices we use are imported; only a quarter of the devices are produced in the country.

An electronic equipment that is almost always imported is the microprocessor: the ‘brain’ of an electronic device. A microprocessor is an integrated circuit that contains a few million transistors (semiconductor-based electronic devices) fused on a semiconductor chip. It is just a few millimetres in dimension and is used in almost every electronic device, from the microwave and washing machine in homes to supercomputers of a space station. However, developing and manufacturing it is not easy; it is expensive, risky, and needs skill. Hence, only a handful of companies across the world have been able to manufacture and sell microprocessors.

If a microprocessor is home-grown, manufacturers of electronics devices could benefit from the ready availability and competitive price of an Indian device with an added advantage of having the design and support team nearby. “Geographical proximity could easily make it possible to get something done in say two weeks, instead of three months required otherwise,” Prof. Desai said.

Prof. Desai and his team developed a tool set called AHIR-V2, which can convert an algorithm to hardware to design the microprocessor circuit. AJIT (named after Prof. Desai’s friend and mentor who died in an accident a few years ago), is a medium-sized processor. It can be used inside a set top box, as a control panel for automation systems, in a traffic light controller or even robotic systems. What’s more, the researchers expect AJIT to cost as little as ₹100 when it is produced en masse.

Prof. Desai said he saw the microprocessor in use in embedded systems. “It’s not for mobile phones yet but not for trivial uses like washing machines either. We can do serious things with it, like use it in WiFi routers, secure power metres or even electronic voting machines.”

In the first stage, AJIT has been manufactured in the government-owned Semiconductor Laboratory, Chandigarh. It has a technology that offers the smallest building block of the size 180 nanometres (nm). The researchers plan to commercially manufacture the processor using more advanced techniques that provide the smallest building block of size 65 nm or 45 nm, which is state of the art. “Fabricating this using 180 nm technology is the first step. Although this may not be state-of-the-art technology, it is enough for most of the targeted applications. Using advanced technology for large manufacturing quantities — tens of lakhs — would bring the cost per piece down,” Prof. Desai said. The researchers have made the software tools associated with AJIT freely available. The processor is also available as a ‘softcore’, where vendors can buy a licence to use the design of the microprocessor and fabricate it to use it in their system. The researchers also offer to customise the processor for specific applications, and plan to introduce AJIT to academia. “A well-designed single-board computer system could be made available at a low cost for students and other enthusiasts to experiment with,” he said.

Building the indigenous microprocessor came with its set of challenges. Prof. Desai had only a small group graduate students who worked on a shoestring budget.

When the team started work in 2015, they were clear it would be a five-year effort. “The first year was about getting the first implementation, and building a prototype. And then validate the prototype and get it manufactured.”

There are tougher challenges ahead. “We need to get more people to use AJIT. If the business community would own this processor, build systems around it so that users, as well as supporters, see value in this and can make money from the effort, then this effort can remain sustainable,” Prof. Desai said.

Verification of the system, he said, was very complex. “It takes effort and ingenuity. It is up to us as a research and development organisation to take it to its proper culmination,” Prof. Desai said.

MeitY has extended its funding to enhance the processor and deploy it in government-initiated projects. SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research), an independent laboratory under MeitY, is planning to use AJIT in the receivers being developed for NAVIC or IRNNS (The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System), an indigenous navigation system for the Indian subcontinent.

When you've been surviving in all sorts of environments for billions of years, you pick up a few tricks for harvesting light as efficiently as possible – and now long-living, light-emitting microalgae could be about to help us develop the next generation of solar panels.

These fluorescent algae are able to capture up to 95% of available light – way better than even our most efficient solar panels – and now thanks to a new study, we finally have an idea of how they do it, and how we can potentially do the same.

Using advanced mass spectrometry methods, where ionisation is used to analyse chemical and structural properties of the organisms, scientists have been able to get a more insightful look at two types of microalgae in particular: cyanobacteria and red algae.

So how are they such efficient solar converters? A mass of light-harvesting antennae called phycobilisomes cover the surface of these microorganisms surface, responsible for converting light into energy.

Each antenna is made up of stacks of building blocks, and the new study has identified four different types of building block – a huge step in our understanding of how these algae work.

With these phycobilisomes, or antennae, are able to capture up to 95 percent of the light that reaches them, the potential boost for renewable energy is huge, considering the majority of mainstream photovoltaic cells we have at the moment operate in the 10-20 percent efficiency range.

"Microalgae are fascinating organisms that can do things so much better than systems designed by engineers," says one of the team, Aneika Leney from the University of Birmingham in the UK.

"By applying this knowledge, we can start to make real progress towards adapting these systems for use in solar panels."

We've had limited success using microalgae to inspire solar panel design so far because the organisms are so complex, and because there are so many different species to look at. The techniques used in this latest research could change that.

By identifying the distinct building blocks or modules in the cyanobacteria and red algae that haven't been spotted before – each a little different in the way it traps light – scientists can start to work out how to develop solar panels that work more like the best that nature has to offer.

And while microalgae may have the edge over human-made solar panels for now, plenty of progress is still being made in photovoltaic technology: some solar panels can achieve efficiency rates of close to 30 percent using the latest fine-tuning.

Meanwhile scientists continue to investigate other ways of boosting the potential of renewable energy – whether that's developing liquid fuel to store the energy harvested from the Sun, or working out how to generate electricity from the coldness of the night sky.

The next big breakthrough could come courtesy of these microalgae. Researchers will now go deeper with the analysis and work out just what it is about the light-harvesting antennae that make them so efficient.

There are more layers of biological sophistication to dig down into yet, and the team estimates there might be as many as 20 building block types to discover.

"The ingenious control panel that algae use to convert sunlight into usable energy is more complicated than a Swiss watch," says one of the researchers, Albert Heck from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. "This is the product of three billion years of evolution, and engineers could learn a lot from it."

"A primal organism that gives us the blueprint for the ultimate super-efficient solar cells."

The research has been published in Cell Chem.

Rob Matheson | MIT News Office | June 5, 2019

MIT researchers have developed a novel “photonic” chip that uses light instead of electricity — and consumes relatively little power in the process. The chip could be used to process massive neural networks millions of times more efficiently than today’s classical computers do.

Neural networks are machine-learning models that are widely used for such tasks as robotic object identification, natural language processing, drug development, medical imaging, and powering driverless cars. Novel optical neural networks, which use optical phenomena to accelerate computation, can run much faster and more efficiently than their electrical counterparts.

But as traditional and optical neural networks grow more complex, they eat up tons of power. To tackle that issue, researchers and major tech companies — including Google, IBM, and Tesla — have developed “AI accelerators,” specialized chips that improve the speed and efficiency of training and testing neural networks.

For electrical chips, including most AI accelerators, there is a theoretical minimum limit for energy consumption. Recently, MIT researchers have started developing photonic accelerators for optical neural networks. These chips perform orders of magnitude more efficiently, but they rely on some bulky optical components that limit their use to relatively small neural networks.

In a paper published in Physical Review X, MIT researchers describe a new photonic accelerator that uses more compact optical components and optical signal-processing techniques, to drastically reduce both power consumption and chip area. That allows the chip to scale to neural networks several orders of magnitude larger than its counterparts.

Simulated training of neural networks on the MNIST image-classification dataset suggest the accelerator can theoretically process neural networks more than 10 million times below the energy-consumption limit of traditional electrical-based accelerators and about 1,000 times below the limit of photonic accelerators. The researchers are now working on a prototype chip to experimentally prove the results.

“People are looking for technology that can compute beyond the fundamental limits of energy consumption,” says Ryan Hamerly, a postdoc in the Research Laboratory of Electronics. “Photonic accelerators are promising … but our motivation is to build a [photonic accelerator] that can scale up to large neural networks.”

Practical applications for such technologies include reducing energy consumption in data centers. “There’s a growing demand for data centers for running large neural networks, and it’s becoming increasingly computationally intractable as the demand grows,” says co-author Alexander Sludds, a graduate student in the Research Laboratory of Electronics. The aim is “to meet computational demand with neural network hardware … to address the bottleneck of energy consumption and latency.”

Joining Sludds and Hamerly on the paper are: co-author Liane Bernstein, an RLE graduate student; Marin Soljacic, an MIT professor of physics; and Dirk Englund, an MIT associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, a researcher in RLE, and head of the Quantum Photonics Laboratory.

Compact design

Neural networks process data through many computational layers containing interconnected nodes, called “neurons,” to find patterns in the data. Neurons receive input from their upstream neighbors and compute an output signal that is sent to neurons further downstream. Each input is also assigned a “weight,” a value based on its relative importance to all other inputs. As the data propagate “deeper” through layers, the network learns progressively more complex information. In the end, an output layer generates a prediction based on the calculations throughout the layers.

All AI accelerators aim to reduce the energy needed to process and move around data during a specific linear algebra step in neural networks, called “matrix multiplication.” There, neurons and weights are encoded into separate tables of rows and columns and then combined to calculate the outputs.

In traditional photonic accelerators, pulsed lasers encoded with information about each neuron in a layer flow into waveguides and through beam splitters. The resulting optical signals are fed into a grid of square optical components, called “Mach-Zehnder interferometers,” which are programmed to perform matrix multiplication. The interferometers, which are encoded with information about each weight, use signal-interference techniques that process the optical signals and weight values to compute an output for each neuron. But there’s a scaling issue: For each neuron there must be one waveguide and, for each weight, there must be one interferometer. Because the number of weights squares with the number of neurons, those interferometers take up a lot of real estate.

“You quickly realize the number of input neurons can never be larger than 100 or so, because you can’t fit that many components on the chip,” Hamerly says. “If your photonic accelerator can’t process more than 100 neurons per layer, then it makes it difficult to implement large neural networks into that architecture.”

The researchers’ chip relies on a more compact, energy efficient “optoelectronic” scheme that encodes data with optical signals, but uses “balanced homodyne detection” for matrix multiplication. That’s a technique that produces a measurable electrical signal after calculating the product of the amplitudes (wave heights) of two optical signals.

Pulses of light encoded with information about the input and output neurons for each neural network layer — which are needed to train the network — flow through a single channel. Separate pulses encoded with information of entire rows of weights in the matrix multiplication table flow through separate channels. Optical signals carrying the neuron and weight data fan out to grid of homodyne photodetectors. The photodetectors use the amplitude of the signals to compute an output value for each neuron. Each detector feeds an electrical output signal for each neuron into a modulator, which converts the signal back into a light pulse. That optical signal becomes the input for the next layer, and so on.

The design requires only one channel per input and output neuron, and only as many homodyne photodetectors as there are neurons, not weights. Because there are always far fewer neurons than weights, this saves significant space, so the chip is able to scale to neural networks with more than a million neurons per layer.

Finding the sweet spot

With photonic accelerators, there’s an unavoidable noise in the signal. The more light that’s fed into the chip, the less noise and greater the accuracy — but that gets to be pretty inefficient. Less input light increases efficiency but negatively impacts the neural network’s performance. But there’s a “sweet spot,” Bernstein says, that uses minimum optical power while maintaining accuracy.

That sweet spot for AI accelerators is measured in how many joules it takes to perform a single operation of multiplying two numbers — such as during matrix multiplication. Right now, traditional accelerators are measured in picojoules, or one-trillionth of a joule. Photonic accelerators measure in attojoules, which is a million times more efficient.

In their simulations, the researchers found their photonic accelerator could operate with sub-attojoule efficiency. “There’s some minimum optical power you can send in, before losing accuracy. The fundamental limit of our chip is a lot lower than traditional accelerators … and lower than other photonic accelerators,” Bernstein says.

NASA gooit het ISS open voor ruimtebedrijven

Caroline Kraaijvanger, 7 juni 2019

Afbeelding

Kortom: men slaat meerdere vliegen in één klap.

Astronauten
