Dit stukje glas ontdoet water binnen 20 minuten van bacteriën

Laat dit apparaatje in een bak met water vallen, zet de bak met water in de zon en 20 minuten later is 99,999 procent van de bacteriën in het water dood.

Het apparaatje is ongeveer net zo groot als een halve postzegel. Als je het onder een elektronenmicroscoop legt, zie je allemaal fijne lijntjes lopen. Het zijn superdunne laagjes molybdeendisulfide die op hun zij op een rechthoekig stukje glas zijn bevestigd. Deze laagjes molybdeendisulfide zijn bedekt met een dun laagje koper. Wanneer zonlicht op het glas valt, absorberen de laagjes molybdeendisulfide het zichtbare zonlicht en triggeren – met behulp van de koper – een reactie die resulteert in de totstandkoming van desinfecterende stofjes, waaronder waterstofperoxide. Deze stofjes doden bacteriën in het omringende water.

Puur water
En dat alles gaat supersnel: in twintig minuten kan het apparaatje zo’n 99,999 procent van de bacteriën in water doden. En zodra de klus van de voor bacteriën dodelijke stofjes is geklaard, verdwijnen ze snel. Wat achterblijft, is puur water. “Ons apparaatje lijkt op een klein rechthoekig stukje zwart glas,” vertelt onderzoeker Chong Liu. “We laten het gewoon in het water vallen, stellen het bloot aan zonlicht en de zon doet de rest.”

Andere methoden
In veel delen van de wereld worden bacteriën in water gedood door het water te koken. Maar daarvoor is brandstof nodig. Er is nog een andere mogelijkheid: het water in een plastic fles in de zon zetten. In dat geval doodt de ultraviolette straling de microben. Maar omdat UV-straling slechts 4 procent van de totale energie van de zon met zich meedraagt, kost deze methode veel tijd. Al snel zes tot 48 uur. De nieuwe methode is een stuk sneller. Dat komt doordat deze ook zichtbaar zonlicht gebruikt om water te zuiveren. Bovendien is het volgens de onderzoekers gemakkelijk en goedkoop om molybdeendisulfide te maken. Waardoor het apparaatje een serieuze optie kan zijn voor ontwikkelingslanden.

Voor het apparaatje op grote schaal kan worden ingezet, is meer onderzoek nodig. Zo is er tot op heden nog maar geëxperimenteerd met drie bacteriestammen. Er is volgens de onderzoekers echter geen enkele reden om aan te nemen dat de methode niet in staat is om andere soorten bacteriën en ook virussen te doden. Ook zal nog uit moeten worden gezocht of het apparaatje raad weet met grote concentraties bacteriën in water.

Kies een creatief beroep om robot buiten de deur te houden

In de toekomst gaan robots veel banen overnemen. Wil jij nuttig blijven en robots buiten de deur houden? Kies dan voor een creatief beroep.

Een baan waarbij iemand zijn creatieve en emotionele intelligentie gebruikt is het meest ‘robotproof’, zegt professor Stuart Cunningham van de Queensland University of Technology. “Ooit maakten ouders zich zorgen als hun kinderen naar een kunstopleiding gingen, maar het digitale creatieve vakgebied is wereldwijd een flinke groeimarkt.

Een master in de kunst is dus zo gek nog niet. Sterker nog: het is anno 2016 een intelligente keuze, meent Cunningham. Er is steeds meer vraag naar mensen die kunnen ontwerpen, die goed zijn met sociale media en die content kunnen creëren.

“Veel ongeschoolde en repetitieve banen worden in de toekomst overgenomen door robots, net als sommige banen in de bouw, accountancy en de wetenschap”, vervolgt Cunningham. “Voor andere beroepen zijn mensen nodig. Banen waarbij het gaat om creativiteit en emotie zullen minder snel verdwijnen.”

Meer banen in de creatieve sector
De scholier van tegenwoordig staat voor een belangrijke uitdaging. Is zijn baan er over meer dan twintig jaar nog? “De afgelopen drie jaar nam het aantal creatieve banen in Australië met 65 procent toe”, vertelt Cunningham. Hij citeert econoom Andrew Charlton van AlphaBeta. “Het aantal banen in de digitale industrie nam zelfs met 212 procent toe.”

Is het zo erg?
Overigens bevestigt arbeids- en organisatiepsycholoog Dik Bijl het standpunt van Cunningham dat banen gaan verdwijnen. “Robots, inclusief zelfrijdende auto’s, gaan het lager geschoolde fabrieks-, vervoers- en dienstenwerk uitvoeren; KI-systemen nemen op termijn het hoger geschoolde kenniswerk over.” Toch is dit niet erg. Bijl beweert dat negentig procent van alle werknemers niet blij is met zijn of haar baan. “Als we het goed regelen met elkaar dan kan iedereen in de toekomst gaan doen wat hij leuk vindt.” Het dagelijkse werk wordt dan immers uitgevoerd door de nieuwe werkers: onder meer robots en zelfrijdende auto’s. En dat biedt ons de gelegenheid om onze passies na te jagen.

Smartphone speech recognition can text 3 times faster than you can type

Computer dictation is a whole lot better than it was a decade ago, but exactly how much better? That was a challenge computer scientists from Stanford University, the University of Washington, and Chinese tech giant Baidu recently took on in an experiment pitting humans against the latest cutting-edge speech recognition software in both speed and accuracy.

Stanford computer science professor James Landay said the study began as a “coffee shop conversation” between himself and Stanford adjunct professor Andrew Ng, currently chief scientist at Baidu. “Andrew said that Baidu’s speech recognition tools were getting really great, but that they didn’t know the right experiment to quantify it,” Landay told Digital Trends.

Baidu’s Deep Speech 2 cloud-based speech recognition software is based on a deep learning neural network: an impressive machine learning tool that is able to train itself by analyzing enormous datasets of real speech.

“Previously, we didn’t have the data and computational ability to build these models, so that a computer could understand different accents and patterns of speech,” Landay continued.

In the end, the casual conversation between Landay and Ng turned into a full-blown experiment, involving 32 participants speaking either Chinese or English. All participants had grown up text messaging, and both were using the standard keyboards which come with the iPhone.

For the English speakers this meant the regular iOS QWERTY keyboard, while the Mandarin speakers used Apple’s Pinyin keyboard. In both cases, speech recognition was around three times faster than users were able to type — while the error rate was 20.4 percent lower for the English speech recognition, and 63.4 percent lower for the Mandarin equivalent.

“My expectation was that speech would be faster than text,” Landay said. “We know this, because you can talk faster than you can type. The problem in the past was that you got a lot of errors with speech recognition, and this slowed you down. I thought speech would prove faster. What I didn’t expect was that it would wind up being three times faster. I figured maybe we would get 50 percent faster. Instead it was much more than that.”

The test isn’t 100 percent comprehensive, of course. Currently the world’s fastest mobile keyboard (at least in English) is the third-party Fleksy keyboard. In a 2014 Guinness World Record for fastest texting, a user was able to type a 126-letter sentence in just 18.44 seconds. However, Landay noted that this study chose a regular iPhone keyboard because it gives a good indication of the typical typist. “Most people don’t take the time to learn alternative keyboards,” he said.

As to what the study means, Landay suggests it represents an important benchmark for speech recognition. “There’s still room to improve, but we think some kind of inflection point has been passed,” he said. “Further improvements will come in recognizing names, performing better in noisy environments, etc.”

This, he said, opens up more possibilities for developers to think more seriously about incorporating speech recognition into their systems without worry. “What will increasingly make sense is relying on speech,” he said. “For example, multimodal interfaces combining speech with other elements to help people navigate. The biggest challenge, though, is going to be understanding the meaning of words and sentences. That part still has a way to go.”

Ik moet er niet aan denken dat die fanatieke moslims nooit meer dood zullen gaan. Het is altijd nog een voordeel dat ze bij een aanslag ook graag zelf om het leven willen komen, maar als ze die instelling wijzigen en ook nog eeuwig blijven doorleven (en ook flink blijven doorfokken) hebben we wel een probleem dat 1000 (of meer) keer zo groot is als nu het geval is. En dan te bedenken dat onze beschaving nu al bedreigd wordt met de totale ondergang.

Terahertz scanning technology 'goes mobile' – thanks to another breakthrough

Terahertz imaging travels 'far and wide', while penetrating more and more spheres of our everyday life, gaining ground and gaining momentum!

There is recent news about another breakthrough in the field that is all over the internet now. It tells about a mobile phone designed by American scientists to operate similar to an X-ray scanner, but employing Terahertz (THz) spectrum of electromagnetic radiation instead (which is safe).

Dr. Kenneth O, professor of electrical engineering at UT Dallas and the Texas Instruments Distinguished Chair, said that they had created approaches aimed to open a previously untapped portion of the electromagnetic spectrum for consumer use and life-saving medical applications, which would allow to better exploit the unlimited potential of the terahertz range.

Their hi-tech chip embedded in a mobile phone presumably allows such handy scanner to 'see through' fabrics such as clothing, drapes etc. Of course, the research team will not rest on laurels, and the next step expected of them - although they are shy about it so far – is a mobile THz-based platform capable of penetrating wood, plastics and even walls.

This may also open the door for medical applications allowing the doctors to look inside a human body for cancer tumours without damaging X-Rays or large, expensive MRI scanners.

CMOS-ThzchiepAt present, the device is designed to work over a short range, about 4 inches, but great things have small beginnings! What is remarkable is that their normal-sized microchip can fit into phones or other handheld electronics. That microchip employs CMOS technology, which was enhanced to utilize THz rays and which makes THz rays much more affordable than they used to be.

This is crucial in making the findings applicable for consumer devices and affordable for users. Chips manufactured using CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) technology form the basis of many consumer electronic devices used in daily life such as personal computers, smart phones, high definition TV and game consoles. ‘The combination of CMOS and terahertz means you could put this chip and receiver on the back of a cellphone, turning it into a device carried in your pocket that can see through objects’ said the scientist.

This device is claimed to be capable of detecting various objects, like studs, wires, hollows within walls. What makes this invention really remarkable is that this new approach somehow manages to get by without THz lenses inside a device, which enabled considerable reduction of the overall size.

Consumer applications of such technology is virtually unlimited and in addition to the above, can include authentication of important documents, detecting counterfeit money, process control for manufacturers (OEM), data transmission in wireless communication devices, you name it!

The research was presented at the most recent International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). The team will continue its work to build an entire working imaging system based on the CMOS terahertz system. Well, Terasense team wishes them luck and more inspiration to carry it all through, but for the time being invites everyone to take a look at out terahertz imaging cameras, THz sources and detectors.

Om die reden door velen de post-schaarste economie genoemd. Zal er in deze economie helemaal geen schaarste meer zijn? Onzin, stelt bovenstaande documentaire van veertig minuten.

Enkele dingen zullen altijd schaars blijven. Aandacht bijvoorbeeld. Status. Land. De mogelijkheid om afvalwarmte te dumpen. Macht, dat is: de mogelijkheid om de vrijheid van anderen in te perken met bijvoorbeeld patenten. Veiligheid. En zo is er meer. Zoals de onmogelijkheid om in een eindig universum oneindig door te blijven groeien.

Mercedes-Benz toont futuristisch busje met ingebouwde bezorgdrones

Mercedes-Benz heeft een speciaal busje ontwikkeld dat pakketten bezorgt via drones op het dak. Daarvoor steekt het bedrijf miljoenen in een dronemaker.

Mercedes-Benz ontwikkelt zijn Vision Van samen met dronemaker Matternet, meldt het bedrijf woensdag. De dronemaker spreekt van een investering van 'meerdere miljoenen'.

De Vision Van is een elektrische bezorgbus van hetzelfde formaat als een Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, maar dan met een volledig geautomatiseerde pakketsysteem er in. Dat systeem weet welk pakket waar bezorgd moet worden, en geeft dat via een luik in het dak aan een Matternet M2-drone.

De chauffeur krijgt een seintje wanneer hij moet stoppen zodat de drone kan opstijgen, waardoor het bezorgen van pakketten veel efficiënter zou moeten worden. Zo hoeft de chauffeur minder vaak uit te stappen en hoeven drones niet zo'n groot bereik te hebben.

Zelfde dag bezorgen
De drone zou ook een pakket kunnen leveren aan een bezorger die al vertrokken is. Zo kunnen sites bezorging op dezelfde dag beloven. De Matternet M2-drone kan zonder menselijke tussenkomst een pakket tot twee kilo aannemen en bezorgen.

De elektrische Vision Van heeft ondertussen een actieradius tot 270 kilometer. Er werken momenteel al zo'n 200 mensen voor Mercedes-Benz aan nieuwe bezorgmethodes.

De Duitse automaker gaat de komende vijf jaar zo'n 500 miljoen euro investeren in digitalisering, automatisering en robotica. Het is nog niet bekend wanneer de Vision Van of de technologie die Mercedes-Benz en Matternet tonen daadwerkelijk beschikbaar is.

Studie zinloos door robot

Honderdduizenden jongeren studeren nu voor een beroep dat op afzienbare termijn wordt overgenomen door robots.

Tot die conclusie komt advieskantoor Deloitte op basis van een analyse van de richting van de studies en de banen die worden gerobotiseerd. Het probleem zit vooral bij het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs (het mbo). Daar is vier op de tien kinderen een studie aan het volgen voor een vak dat gaat verdwijnen.

300.000 jongeren

Bij het hoger beroepsonderwijs (hbo) leren twee van de tien studenten een vak dat verdwijnt. Bij het universitair onderwijs gaat het om één op de tien. Het verschil wordt volgens Deloitte verklaard door het werk dat de jongeren willen gaan doen: ,,Laaggeschoolde arbeid is nu eenmaal makkelijker te automatiseren dan hooggeschoolde arbeid,” zegt Sjoerd van der Smissen, partner Deloitte Consulting.

In totaal gaat het om een groep van bijna 300.000 jongeren die waarschijnlijk voor niets een vak leren. ,,Het is een krachtig signaal aan studenten, ouders, onderwijsinstellingen en beleidsmakers: de komende jaren dient hard te worden ingezet op bewustwording. Hoewel de keuze aan het individu is, blijft het zaak de studiekeuze zo goed geïnformeerd mogelijk te kunnen maken,” aldus Van der Smissen.

Cybathlon: World's first 'bionic Olympics' gears up

It's being pitched as a bionic Olympics. Next month, contestants from across the world using robotic exoskeletons, electronic arms, powered wheelchairs and other tech will take part in the world's first Cybathlon.

The event near Zurich is intended to highlight how people with physical disabilities can be helped by novel technological aids in their everyday activities.

Fifty teams from across the world will take part, including six from the UK.

Events include slicing bread, going upstairs and putting out the washing.

"Disability sport is very much in the public eye thanks to the success of the London Paralympics, but people don't see the struggles people with disabilities or physical weakness face every day," explained Kevin Evison.

He will be competing with the use of an advanced prosthetic arm as part of a team from London's Imperial College university.

He said: "Cybathlon brings together the best of prosthetic technology from around the world with innovative ideas enabling us to be more independent and productive, making it a competition against companies and research labs too."

Futuristic race
David Rose, who was paralysed 29 years ago in a diving accident, will be competing as part of the University of Essex's rival Brainstormer team.

He will be trying to control a computer game using only his brainwaves.

"I'm incredibly competitive - from an early age I was always into sport and you always try to win," he told the BBC.

Mr Rose has been training for nearly two years in preparation for the brain interface race.

He will wear a cap covered in electrodes that will detect his brain activity and send the readings to a computer, which will attempt to interpret his thought commands.

"It's surprisingly exhausting," he adds.

"To move my avatar I have to think of specific thoughts without thinking of anything else.

"How many times do you do that during the day without thinking, 'What will I have for tea tonight?'

"Or, 'I must do that job,' or 'put some more money in the car park meter'. Your brain is constantly working."

Rewired brains
The Cybathlon has been organised by the Swiss university ETH Zurich.

One of its goals is to encourage engineers to create assistive products that better suit people with disabilities.

"The problem is most of the research is with able-bodied users," explains University of Essex team leader Ana Matran-Fernandez.

"But our brains rewire. If someone like David has not been able to move their legs for years that part of the brain will be doing something else.

"It's very hard to get people with that level of disability to come to the lab and do these very long training sessions. The Cybathlon has provided a reason to do that.

"Thanks to this competition we have built a brain-computer interface, which can recognise different commands so it could be used to control a wheelchair to move forward, left or right."

Teams entering the prosthetic arm race hope it will also lead to lower-cost, tech-enhanced prosthetics.

Mr Evison's electronic hand has a high degree of manoeuvrability but cost the NHS about £7,000.

It is no longer routinely provided to patients.

"The race involves doing as many different tasks as possible in the time limit," he explains.

"Things like cutting a loaf, holding a tray and fitting a light bulb. I don't see there being a problem. I'm not here to lose but to win."

Imperial College is itself trying to develop a cheaper alternative.

"We are working on sensor technology, kind of like putting a microphone on the skin to hear the sound of the muscle fibres moving," says Dr Ian Radcliffe, who is responsible for the university's Sports Innovation Challenge Project.

"It's more robust than the myo-electric system Kevin currently uses," he added, referring to a system that relies on detecting the electrical signals naturally generated by muscles.

"It's also less susceptible to errors and is easier to become adept with. The aim is to make it widely available and at low cost."

Team Imperial is also perfecting a wheelchair to climb stairs for one of the other events.

The Cybathlon is the idea of Prof Robert Riener from ETH Zurich University.

He said it came to him after chatting to an acquaintance with a false arm.

"He mentioned standing in a cinema queue and having to take out his wallet with his prosthetic arm," he recalls.

"It was always a challenge to do it quickly and he was embarrassed because his arm was loud.

"I realised current technology is not well developed and thought a competition would motivate research labs to talk to patients and come up with better solutions."

Next year the Cybathlon could come to the UK.

If October's event is a success, there are plans to hold a follow-up at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near Aylesbury, which played a key role in the creation of the Paralympics.

Rise of Artificial Intelligence Ushers Era of Robot Criminals

IT experts warn that computers and robots may commit more crimes than humans by 2040, claiming that the rise of artificial intelligence technologies falling into the wrong hands could pose society with some dangerous problems.

The latter will allow machines receive a cognitive ability which could even surpass that of humans. Technology experts fear that machines will end up becoming criminals, leaving human powerless to stop them.

Dr. Ron Chrisley, director of the Centre for Cognitive Science at the University of Sussex, told Sputnik that while mankind is unlikely to face killer robots or rogue artificial intelligence taking over the world anytime soon, a human criminal in possession of AI-grade technology might be a much more real and tangible threat than some of us could imagine.

• "We need to be worried about criminals using AI in three different ways. One is to evade detection: if one has some artificial intelligence technology, one might be able, for instance, to engage in certain kinds of financial crimes in a way that can be randomized in a particular way that avoids standard methods of crime detection. Or criminals could use computer programs to notice patterns in security systems that a human couldn’t notice, and find weaknesses that a human would find very hard to identify… And then finally a more common use might be of AI to just crack passwords and codes, and access accounts and data that people previously could leave secure. So these are just three examples of how AI would be a serious threat to security of people in general if it were in the hands of the wrong people," Chrisley explained.

And while there's no need to worry about "Hollywood-style robot crimes" being perpetrated for at least a few decades, the public already needs to start worrying about crimes involving people using AI’s with malicious intent or incidents involving computer systems going out of control, he added.

At the same time, the possibility of such threats shouldn't dissuade humanity from continuing AI-related research, Dr. Chrisley argued.

• "I think it would be a tragedy if we let fear of remote possibilities of AI systems committing crimes, if that fear stopped us from investigating artificial intelligence as a positive technology that might help us solve some of the problems our world is facing now. I’m an optimist in that I think that AI as a technology can very well be used for good, and if we're careful, can be of much more benefit than disadvantage," he said.

However, according to Dr. Chrisley that would only be possible if AI research wasn’t conducted solely by "most oppressive governments" and military institutions, but by "people at large, for the people at large."

Furthermore, instead of banning some areas of AI research and development in an attempt to prevent possible crimes, a much more effective tactic would be to properly regulate this sphere by updating the legislation and educating the authorities on this matter.

Reading another person's emotions isn't always easy, but a new machine is here to help.

The 'EQ-Radio' device can detect emotions including sadness, anger and happiness, by sending wireless signals that measure heartbeats and breathing as the signals bounce off a person's body.

Developed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the machine is claimed to be 87 percent accurate.

The breakthrough could someday pave the way for a new era of robot therapists that can sense emotions just like humans.

In more immediate applications, the researchers from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) believe that the system could be by used in smart homes to gather information about a person's mood and adjust heating accordingly or suggest going outside.

They say it could also be used by film studios and ad agencies to test viewer reactions in real-time and could also be used in healthcare.

'Our work shows that wireless signals can capture information about human behavior that is not always visible to the naked eye,' said project lead Dina Katabi who co-wrote a paper on the topic with PhD students Mingmin Zhao and Fadel Adib.

'We believe that our results could pave the way for future technologies that could help monitor and diagnose conditions like depression and anxiety.'

Using wireless signals reflected off people's bodies, the device measures heartbeats as accurately as an ECG (electrocardiogram) monitor, says the report, with an approximate margin of error of just 0.3 percent.

Algorithms break the reflections into individual heartbeats and analyse the small variations in heartbeat intervals.

It then studies the waveforms within each heartbeat to match a person's behavior to how they previously acted in one of the four emotional states.

For the experiments, subjects used videos or music to recall a series of memories that each evoked one the four emotions, as well as a no-emotion baseline.

Trained just on those five sets of two-minute videos, EQ-Radio could then accurately classify the person's behavior among the four emotions 87 percent of the time.

The correlations vary from person to person, but they are consistent enough to detect emotions with 70 per cent accuracy, even when the person's heartbeat hadn't been previously measured, say the researchers.

'Just by generally knowing what human heartbeats look like in different emotional states, we can look at a random person's heartbeat and reliably detect their emotions,' says Zhao.

The system was found to be more accurate in detecting joy, sadness and anger than Microsoft's Emotion API, which relies on facial expressions.



The algorithm's ability to capture the heartbeat's entire waveform means that it could be used for non-invasive health monitoring in the future.

'By recovering measurements of the heart valves actually opening and closing at a millisecond time-scale, this system can literally detect if someone's heart skips a beat,' says Adib.

'This opens up the possibility of learning more about conditions like arrhythmia, and potentially exploring other medical applications that we haven't even thought of yet.'

The team will present the work next month at the Association of Computing Machinery's International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking (MobiCom).
