By Redactie World Unity on aug 4, 2019

Chatbots were all the craze last decade, and they're now commonly found when interacting with support lines. Today, conversational agents are a bit limited, and Google is working towards a human-like chatbot "that can chat about anything."

The Google Brain research team today detailed "Meena". This end-to-end trained neural conversational model tries to correct the "critical flaw" of current highly specialized chatbots:
  • They sometimes say things that are inconsistent with what has been said so far, or lack common sense and basic knowledge about the world. Moreover, chatbots often give responses that are not specific to the current context.
Google's Meena model focuses on understanding the context of a conversation to provide a sensible reply. The goal is to create something that can "chat about virtually anything a user wants." For example, two conversations show users asking Meena for show recommendations, while another sees it reply with jokes.

It's trained on 341GB of text from public domain social media conversations, which is 8.5x more data than existing state-of-the-art generative models.

In working towards a realistic model, Google created a new quality benchmark for chatbots. The Sensibleness and Specificity Average (SSA) "captures basic, but important attributes for natural conversations." Humans evaluators are asked to judge if a response is "reasonable in context."
  • If anything seems off — confusing, illogical, out of context, or factually wrong — then it should be rated as, "does not make sense". If the response makes sense, the utterance is then assessed to determine if it is specific to the given context.

For example, if A says, "I love tennis," and B responds, "That's nice," then the utterance should be marked, "not specific". That reply could be used in dozens of different contexts. But if B responds, "Me too, I can't get enough of Roger Federer!" then it is marked as "specific", since it relates closely to what is being discussed.
On this Google-created benchmark, Meena does better than existing models, and is "closing the gap with human performance". Practical applications for human-like chatbots include humanizing how people use computers and making relatable interactive movie or game characters.

Afbeelding

Moving forward, Google wants to look beyond its focus on sensibleness and specificity for its human-like chatbot to tackle personality and factuality. Safety and bias is another important area, with the company not releasing a research demo today as a result.
  • We are evaluating the risks and benefits associated with externalizing the model checkpoint, however, and may choose to make it available in the coming months to help advance research in this area.

Inspired by the functioning of the human brain and based on a biological mechanism called neuromodulation, it allows intelligent agents to adapt to unknown situations

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has enabled the development of high-performance automatic learning techniques in recent years. However, these techniques are often applied task by task, which implies that an intelligent agent trained for one task will perform poorly on other tasks, even very similar ones. To overcome this problem, researchers at the University of Liège (ULiège) have developed a new algorithm based on a biological mechanism called neuromodulation. This algorithm makes it possible to create intelligent agents capable of performing tasks not encountered during training. This novel and exceptional result is presented this week in the magazine PLOS ONE.

Despite the immense progress in the field of AI in recent years, we are still very far from human intelligence. Indeed, if current AI techniques allow to train computer agents to perform certain tasks better than humans when they are trained specifically for them, the performance of these same agents is often very disappointing when they are put in conditions (even slightly) different from those experienced during training.

The human being is capable of adapting to new situations very effectively by using the skills he has acquired throughout his life. For example, a child who has learned to walk in a living room will quickly learn to walk in a garden as well. In such a context, learning to walk is associated with synaptic plasticity, which modifies the connections between neurons, while the rapid adaptation of walking skills learned in the living room to those needed to walk in the garden is associated with neuromodulation. Neuromodulation modifies the input-output properties of the neurons themselves via chemical neuromodulators.

Synaptic plasticity is the basis of all the latest advances in AI. However, no scientific work has so far proposed a way to introduce a neuromodulation mechanism into artificial neural networks. This quite exceptional result, described this week in the journal PLOS ONE, is the result of an extremely fruitful collaboration between neuroscientists and artificial intelligence researchers at the University of Liège developing intelligent algorithms: two Ph.D. students, Nicolas Vecoven and Antoine Wehenkel, as well as two professors, Damien Ernst (specialist in artificial intelligence) and Guillaume Drion (neuroscientist).

These ULiège researchers have developed a completely original artificial neural network architecture, introducing an interaction between two sub-networks. The first one takes into account all the contextual information concerning the task to be solved and, on the basis of this information, neuromodule the second subnetwork in the manner of the brain's chemical neuromodulators. Thanks to neuromodulation, this second sub-network, which determines the actions to be performed by the intelligent agent, can therefore be adapted extremely quickly to the current task. This allows the agent to efficiently solve new tasks.

This innovative architecture has been successfully tested on classes of navigation problems for which adaptation is necessary. In particular, agents trained to move towards a target, while avoiding obstacles, were able to adapt to situations in which their movement was disrupted by extremely variable wind directions.

Prof. Damien Ernst says, "The novelty of this research is that, for the first time, cognitive mechanisms identified in neuroscience are finding algorithmic applications in a multi-tasking context. This research opens perspectives in the exploitation in AI of neuromodulation, a key mechanism in the functioning of the human brain."

By Cliff Saran, Managing Editor, Published: 12 Dec 2019 9:56

Stanford University's AI Index 2019 annual report has found that the speed of artificial intelligence (AI) is outpacing Moore's Law.

Moore's Law maps out how processor speeds double every 18 months to two years, which means application developers can expect a doubling in application performance for the same hardware cost.

But the Stanford report, produced in partnership with McKinsey & Company, Google, PwC, OpenAI, Genpact and AI21Labs, found that AI computational power is accelerating faster than traditional processor development. "Prior to 2012, AI results closely tracked Moore's Law, with compute doubling every two years.," the report said. "Post-2012, compute has been doubling every 3.4 months."

The study looked at how AI algorithms have improved over time, by tracking the progress of the ImageNet image identification program. Given that image classification methods are largely based on supervised machine learning techniques, the report's authors looked at how long it takes to train an AI model and associated costs, which they said represents a measurement of the maturity of AI development infrastructure, reflecting advances in software and hardware.

Their research found that over 18 months, the time required to train a network on cloud infrastructure for supervised image recognition fell from about three hours in October 2017 to about 88 seconds in July 2019. The report noted that data on ImageNet training time on private cloud instances was in line with the public cloud AI training time improvements.

The report's authors used the ResNet image classification model to assess how long it takes algorithms to achieve a high level of accuracy. In October 2017, 13 days of training time were required to reach just above 93% accuracy. The report found that training an AI-based image classification over 13 days to achieve 93% accuracy would have cost about $2,323 in 2017.

The study reported that the latest benchmark available on Stanford DAWNBench , using a cloud TPU on GCP to run the ResNet model to attain image classification accuracy slightly above 93% accuracy, cost just over $12 in September 2018.

The report also explored how far computer vision had progressed, looking at innovative algorithms that push the limits of automatic activity understanding, which can recognise human actions and activities from videos using the ActivityNet Challenge.

One of the tasks in this challenge, called Temporal Activity Localisation, uses a long video sequences that depict more than one activity, and the algorithm is asked to find a given activity. Today, algorithms can accurately recognise hundreds of complex human activities in real time, but the report found that much more work is needed.

"After organising the International Activity Recognition Challenge (ActivityNet) for the last four years, we observe that more research is needed to develop methods that can reliably discriminate activities, which involve fine-grained motions and/or subtle patterns in motion cues, objects and human-object interactions," said Bernard Ghanem, associate professor of electrical engineering at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, in the report.

"Looking forward, we foresee the next generation of algorithms to be one that accentuates learning without the need for excessively large manually curated data. In this scenario, benchmarks and competitions will remain a cornerstone to track progress in this self-learning domain."

Soon, Windowless Planes Will Let Passengers See World Around Them

December 2, 2019

Afbeelding

I bet while traveling by plane most of the time, people are fighting over the window seat. The reason is simple; they want to enjoy the magnificent view. Inspired by the idea to give the passengers a panoramic view of the sky, the Center for Process Innovation is creating the future of air travel.

This British technology and research firm is constructing futuristic planes that will be windowless. The length of the aircraft will be covered with OLED touch screens giving the passengers a virtual window seat.

Afbeelding

CPI believes that these planes could be a reality in the next 10 to 15 years. The cameras placed outside the plane will be connected to the touch screens allowing a display of realistic view of what is going on around the plane outside. You can turn the virtual window into an entertainment system if you get sick of looking at the sky.

OLED means organic light-emitting diode, where the film comprised of organic compounds is projecting light as a reaction to an electrical current.

This kind of technology is currently being used in tablets, cell phones, computer monitors, and televisions. We should bear in mind that by the time these planes are manufactured, we are going to have more advanced screens.

All the walls of the plane are filled with screens. It allows everyone to see what’s going on outside in the air. You would agree that this idea is fantastic. You don’t have to worry about getting a good seat again.

However, some people raised concerns. They think that the amount of light caused by all the screens might cause discomfort among the passengers.

In the next video, you can learn more about the future of transportation.

The Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) foundation, created and funded by the Canadian government, has invested Canadian $4.4 million (about US$3.3 million) in Xanadu Quantum Technologies Inc. (Toronto,Canada).
This brings the total invested in the 2016 startup to CA$45.4 million (about US$34.4 million). SDTC's investment will be used to make Xandu's photonic quantum computation available over the cloud.

Xanadu was formed to exploit quantum effects in light and form photonic ICs to perform quantum computations. By operating with light Xanadu expects to avoid the low temperature requirements of electronic quantum computation.

Laser light is used to carry information through Xanadu's optical chips and it is expected that this approach will allow quantum calculation at room temperature, eliminating cooling systems required by most other types of quantum computers.

The STDC is funding a project to be carried out with University of Toronto and transportation company SwiftRide. The overall goal is to demonstrate the practical benefits of quantum computing for users and customers by the end of 2022.

Xanadu is following a similar strategy to PsiQuantum Corp. (Palo Alto, Calif.) in that it is pursuing photonic quantum computing.

"The quantum hardware technology that Xanadu is building will develop quantum computers with the ability to solve extremely challenging computational problems, completing chemical calculations in minutes — which would otherwise require a million CPUs in a data center," said Leah Lawrence, CEO of Sustainable Development Technology Canada, in a statement issued by Xanadu

Eindhovense studenten betalen met onderhuidse chip

Afbeelding

Their work is described in a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Kalaichelvi Saravanamuttu, an associate professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at McMaster, explains that the technology brings together a form of hydrogel developed by the Harvard team with light manipulation and measurement techniques performed in her lab, which specializes in the chemistry of materials that respond to light.

The translucent material, which resembles raspberry Jell-O in appearance, incorporates light-responsive molecules whose structure changes in the presence of light, giving the gel special properties both to contain light beams and to transmit information between them.

Typically, beams of light broaden as they travel, but the gel is able to contain filaments of laser light along their pathway through the material, as though the light were being channeled through a pipe.

When multiple laser beams, each about half the diameter of a human hair, are shone through the same material, the researchers have established that they affect one another's intensity, even without their optical fields overlapping at all - a fact that proves the gel is "intelligent".

The interaction between those filaments of light can be stopped, started, managed and read, producing a predictable, high-speed output: a form of information that could be developed into a circuit-free form of computing, Saravanamuttu explains.

"Though they are separated, the beams still see each other and change as a result," she says. "We can imagine, in the long term, designing computing operations using this intelligent responsiveness."

While the broader concept of computing with light is a separate and developing field unto itself, this new technology introduces a promising platform, says Derek Morim, a graduate student in Saravanamuttu's lab who is co-first author on the paper.

"Not only can we design photoresponsive materials that reversibly switch their optical, chemical and physical properties in the presence of light, but we can use those changes to create channels of light, or self-trapped beams, that can guide and manipulate light," he says. "Further study may allow us to design even more complex materials to manipulate both light and material in specific ways."

Amos Meeks, a graduate student at Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, said the technology helps to advance the idea of all-optical computing, or computations done solely with beams of light.

"Most computation right now uses hard materials such as metal wires, semiconductors and photodiodes, to couple electronics to light," said Meeks, who is also co-first author of the research. "The idea behind all optical computing is to remove those rigid components and control light with light. Imagine, for example, an entirely soft, circuitry-free robot driven by light from the sun."

Futuristische reactor combineert thorium met kernfusie

Dorine Schenk, 11 februari 2020

As more computing power goes into machines, so do more complex algorithms that test that power. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been met with consistent processing power limitations on its long road of development. In recent years, many of these issues have begun to be overcome, sometimes with power and other times with better algorithms. DeepMind's MEMO is one such program that has taken the route of better algorithmic computation.

Alphabet subsidiary DeepMind has been a keystone for AI development. You may remember DeepMind's AlphaGo winning a Go tournament against world champion Lee Sedol. Fewer may be aware of AlphaStar, which can play the popular computer game StarCraft 2! Each of these AIs, and many others, are run on artificial neural networks; connectionist systems that emulate how brains function.

Neural networks emulate brain function
Neural networks have significantly pushed AI technology forward into more advanced realms that sometimes seem like science fiction, yet there is always room for advancement! Although these advanced AIs can learn on their own, defeat gamers, win debates and even fold proteins better than scientists, they often have the issue of being slightly slow due to calculating every possible outcome and combing over all information in a databank and calculating all potential outcomes. DeepMind's MEMO is meant to circumvent that problem in a brilliant fashion.

MEMO has been designed with the intent of providing complex reasoning in machine learning. To perform such a task the researchers scoured over neurological research papers to study memory in the brain. Our brains don't just record facts, we file information as memories in different locations such as the hippocampus. One thing that has been separating the way AI recalls information and the way that we recall memories is that neural networks haven't been fitted with their own version of the hippocampus. With each researcher contributing in equal measure, their study posted on arXiv states:
  • During our every day life we need to make several judgments that require connecting facts which were not experienced together, but acquired across experiences at different points in time. For instance, imagine walking your daughter to a coding summer camp and encountering another little girl with a woman. You might conclude that the woman is the mother of the little girl. Few weeks later, you are at a coffee shop near your house and you see the same little girl, this time with a man. Based on these two separated episodes you might infer that there is a relationship between the woman and the man. This flexible recombination of single experiences in novel ways to infer unobserved relationships is called inferential reasoning and is supported by the hippocampus.
DeepMinds MEMO provides AI the ability to have more lifelike computational skills

The power of DeepMind's MEMO
DeepMind researchers realized that they could add an external memory to AI that functioned like the hippocampus does. Empowering AI to recall associations to data and, with that power, more quickly and readily access immediately relevant information. In other words, DeepMind's MEMO project almost gives artificial intelligence the ability to have memories, which allows for complex reasoning skills and deeper comprehension.
  • To sum up, our contributions are:

    1. A new task that stresses the essence of reasoning — i.e. the appreciation of distant relationships among elements distributed across multiple facts.

    2. An in depth investigation of the memory representation that support inferential reasoning, and extensions to existing memory architectures that show promising results on these reasoning tasks.

    3. A REINFORCE loss component that learn the optimal number of iterations required to learn
    to solve a task.

    4. Significant empirical results on three tasks demonstrating the effectiveness of the above two contributions: paired associative inference, shortest path finding, and bAbI (Weston et al., 2015).
Inspired by neuroscience literature, the researchers developed a procedurally generated task called paired associative inference (PAI). Using PAI forces AI to learn abstractions to solve problems through capturing inferential reasoning the same way that you and I do. MEMO retains sets of data in memory and learns a projection paired with a mechanism that provides more flexible use of memories. Rather than taking steps to come to conclusions MEMO is able to use "hops".

Through a model of human associative memory called REMERGE, where the information retrieved is recirculated as a new query and the difference between retrieved content at different time steps is used to calculate if the model has settled into a fixed point, MEMO indicates whether it wishes to keep computing and querying or whether it's able to provide an answer.

This ability of MEMO to decide whether or not it needs to continue combing through data and keep thinking or whether it already has the answer makes it significantly faster than other AI models. When put through baseline AI tests in Facebook AI Research's bAbi suite, MEMO achieved the highest accuracy score on the PAI task and was the only architecture that successfully answered the most complex queries on longer sequences. When compared with other models, MEMO outperformed the baselines in more complex graphs by 20% and only required three data hops as opposed to the best-performing baseline model's 10 steps.

As we move further into a world in which AI is used every single day behind common tasks most people are seemingly unaware of, just what is our next step in this evolution? How much more human will AI become? Peering through recent DeepMind research articles on dopamine, it seems as if it's next venture will be in AI's mental reward system.

Scientists make major breakthrough in ‘quantum entanglement’ that could change how the internet works

Andrew Griffin – Feb. 12, 2020

Researchers were able to demonstrate 'spooky' process happening at much bigger distances than ever before

Scientists have managed to entangle two "quantum memories" at a distant much bigger than ever before, a breakthrough that could one day change the way the internet works.

The discovery could be a major step towards a quantum internet, though only a very early one. Scientists hope it can allow for the development of entanglement over long-distances and a number of nodes, which will be required for such a network.

Researchers have long hoped to develop a quantum internet, creating a new kind of network that uses the unusual behaviour of the quantum world to transmit data with vastly improved speeds and security.

A quantum network runs on a similar idea to the traditional internet, allowing for the communication of large amounts of data across long distances. But it would do so using quantum bits, or qubits, between quantum processors – offering new kinds of possibilities in addition to the current classical internet.

But to do so they will need to be able to transmit particles that are entangled, the "spooky" phenomenon that allows particles to affect each other at great distances. In recent years, there have been breakthroughs in doing so – which have allowed researchers to transmit entangled particles through cables or using satellites – but they have all been limited by distance.

When quantum transmission is used over such a long distance, the distribution does not often succeed, because the transmissions get lost and so cannot communicate reliably.

Until now, the furthest scientists have been able to entangle quantum memories is 1.3 kilometres. That suggests there may be difficulties scaling up such a system to a scale that it can actually be used, such as transmitting data across a city.

In the new research, engineers were able to transmit entangled particles over a much greater distance of 50km. They did so using a specific quantum effect that allows transmission over a vastly improved length.

Such a distance could allow for long-distance transmission of the kind that could attach cities together and finally work towards the dream of a quantum internet, the researchers write in the new paper, published in Nature.

"Extending these experiments to nodes separated by much longer distances will enable us to perform advanced quantum information tasks, such as efficient quantum teleportation over long distances," they write in the paper.

In the study, researchers looked at how they could transmit two quantum memories, which are the quantum version of normal computer memory, or the equivalent of a hard drive. While a piece of computer memory will store information as 1s or 0s, the quantum memory will hold a quantum state, theoretically allowing for much more powerful computing.

To entangle those two quantum memories, researchers had to shoot photons, or individual particles of light, along the 50 kilometre cable. After making their way over that distance, the two memories were able to interfere with each other, making the experiment a success and demonstrating that two quantum memories could become entangled over such a distance.

Pets 'go hungry' after smart feeder goes offline
Owners of a device designed to release food for pets say their animals were left hungry during a week-long system failure.
Petnet allows owners to schedule and control feeding via a smartphone app.

When the BBC contacted Petnet on its advertised email address, the email bounced back with a delivery failure notice.
One pet owner tweeted: "My cat starved for over a week", while others complained about other hardware issues.
"My three Gen2 feeders constantly jam and won't dispense food," wrote another.
Some expressed relief that the feeders were now back online.

Petnet has two Twitter accounts. The official one has not tweeted since 30 August 2019 but the support account issued four tweets between 14 and 21 February about the problems experienced.
In its first tweet it said a "system outage" was affecting second generation devices and asked customers not to switch off their feeder even if it appeared to be offline.
It said automatic feeds would "still dispense".
Four days later, it tweeted again to say it hoped to "release more information" soon.
On 21 February it said smartfeeders were "returning online" and a "system reset" was in progress.
Some customers tweeting to the support account complained of not having received a response.
The firm had faced similar problems in 2016.

'Things will fall over'

According to Crunchbase, US-based firm Petnet has received $14.9m (£11.5m) in funding since it was founded in December 2012.
The device is sold for £222 on the Amazon marketplace in the UK.
Nearly 60% of the 554 customer reviews left on the US site have given the device a rating of either one or two stars.
"As we go towards a more automated home you have to acknowledge that, somewhere along the line, things will fall over," said Stuart Miles, founder of the tech site Pocket-Lint.
"Robots and automated systems have hiccups along the way, it's something we need to get used to."

Over Geobacter

St. Elmos vuur zien.
St. Elmo's fire is a weather phenomenon in which luminous plasma is created by a corona discharge from a sharp or pointed object in a strong electric field in the atmosphere (such as those generated by thunderstorms or created by a volcanic eruption).
WIKI
