Lees bijvoorbeeld SpaceX’s reusable rockets will make space cheaper — but how much?

Daaruit :
It costs $60 million to make the Falcon 9, and $200,000 to fuel it, according to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

He suspects most of the refurbishment will be dedicated to inspections and making minor adjustments so that the vehicle meets the standards required for spaceflight. Those costs would be about half a million dollars — not the $60 million needed to build a first stage, says Poulos. "It’s still a pretty significant cost reduction."

Bigelow Aerospace Shows What Its Space Stations Look Like, And They're Wild

That’s one big space balloon

By Danny Paez, on December 8, 2017

Afbeelding

Bigelow Aerospace rocketed to the top of the news when the company announced its plans to put a “private space yacht” in orbit a couple months ago. Now, the company has released some of the first visuals about these inflatable space pods.

In an Instagram post, Bigelow revealed blueprints of the gigantic tents. All they need in order to make these designs come to life are larger rocket fairings. Rocket fairings, which are found at the very tip of the rocket, are used to protect payloads. In this case, the payload would be the inflatable pod called the B330 .

The aerospace company’s original design for the B330 came in at 330 cubic meters, which is a fraction of the size of a standard hot air balloon. Only you and a couple of your closest friends could comfortably live in there. All of this could be packed in a 5 meter rocket fairing.

By doubling the size of that fairing, Bigelow’s post shows it could fit a 5,000-cubic-meter pod onto a rocket. That’s roughly the size of two and a half hot air balloons put together. Your whole extended family could come chill in orbit.

A SpaceX Fairing Separation Test

In a statement back in October, Bigelow said its original B330 design could be used to “provide anchorage for significant lunar business development in addition to offering NASA and other governments the Moon as an new exciting location to conduct long-term exploration and astronaut training.”

By making these inflatable space stations fifteen times bigger, they can be used to carry out large-scale experiments or projects that involve a lot of people, for much less than what a traditional space station costs.

The International Space Station (ISS), for example, cost around $150 billion to build. The Washington Post estimates that it would cost $2.3 billion to send the original B330 into space. That’s still a ton of money, but a fraction of the bill the ISS ran up.

The future of commercial space travel might look a lot like the Stoweflake Balloon Festival.

MIT scientists borrow from fireflies to make glowing plants

Michael Irving | dec 12, 2017

Afbeelding
MIT researchers have created glowing plants, which could eventually be used to light rooms or streets without electricity(Credit: Seon-Yeong Kwak)

The humble house plant could soon start earning its keep by lighting up a room, if new research from MIT pans out. Engineers have hacked watercress plants to make them glow for a few hours at a time, and while it's currently only about as bright as those old stars you might have stuck to your ceiling as a kid, the long-term plan is to develop plants that you could read by to reduce the need for electric lighting.

The idea of a glowing plant is not particularly new. They've been promised by Kickstarter campaigns for years, including the likes of Bioglow and Glowing Plants, but those startups have since gone bust. Although we're not going to pretend that this new project is immune from meeting the same fate, having the backing of MIT scientists gives us a little more hope that the glowing plants might eventually bear fruit.

The work comes from the same "plant nanobionics" team that recently designed explosive-detecting spinach and leaf sensors that can alert farmers at the first sign of thirsty crops. In this case, the researchers wanted to tackle lighting, which accounts for about 20 percent of energy consumption worldwide.

"The vision is to make a plant that will function as a desk lamp – a lamp that you don't have to plug in," says Michael Strano, senior author of the study. "The light is ultimately powered by the energy metabolism of the plant itself."

To make them glow, the scientists embedded specially-designed nanoparticles into the leaves of watercress plants. Three different components were needed for the effect, each one placed inside a carrier nanoparticle.

Fireflies get their glow through the interaction between an enzyme called luciferase and a molecule called luciferin, so both of these were added. Finally, their activity was boosted by a molecule called co-enzyme A. These components were packaged inside nanoparticles and suspended in a solution.

The next step was to soak the plants in that solution and pressurize them, which causes the particles to enter the leaves through tiny pores called stomata. The luciferin and coenzyme A were packaged inside polymer nanoparticles that enter and build up in an inner layer of the leaf, while the luciferase was contained inside much smaller silica nanoparticles, allowing them to enter the plant cells. As the luciferin is released from its particles, it too enters the cells and reacts with the luciferase, creating the glowing effect.

At the moment, the light the plants emit is very dim – about a thousandth of the level required to read by – but the researchers say they can boost the brightness through further work. Already, they've improved the duration of the glow from 45 minutes at the beginning of the project to about three and a half hours currently.

The team says this method can avoid some of the pitfalls that previous attempts fell into, namely trying to genetically engineer plants to express luciferase genes. According to The Atlantic, the Glowing Plant project recently shut up shop after running into some hurdles that they didn't foresee (even if skeptical scientists saw them coming).

Although the new plants currently don't glow any brighter than previous ones did, the MIT researchers say their method is simpler, and can be applied to essentially any type of plant. Ideally, future work would see the soaking method replaced by a spray-on paint, allowing them to apply the glow to trees lining streets.

"Our target is to perform one treatment when the plant is a seedling or a mature plant, and have it last for the lifetime of the plant," says Strano. "Our work very seriously opens up the doorway to streetlamps that are nothing but treated trees, and to indirect lighting around homes."

Adding a luciferase inhibitor to the mix could also allow the team to eventually create plants that can turn off the glow as well, in response to sunlight or on command, for example.

You can check out the glowing plants in the video below.

The research was published in the journal Nano Letters.

Onderzoekers ontwerpen de eerste kwantumcomputerchip

Vivian Lammerse, 15 december 2017

How a Machine That Can Make Anything Would Change Everything

By Thomas Hornigold - Dec 25, 2017

“Something is going to happen in the next forty years that will change things, probably more than anything else since we left the caves.” – James Burke

James Burke has a vision for the future. He believes that by the middle of this century, perhaps as early as 2042, our world will be defined by a new device: the nanofabricator.

These tiny factories will be large at first, like early computers, but soon enough you’ll be able to buy one that can fit on a desk. You’ll pour in some raw materials—perhaps water, air, dirt, and a few powders of rare elements if required—and the nanofabricator will go to work. Powered by flexible photovoltaic panels that coat your house, it will tear apart the molecules of the raw materials, manipulating them on the atomic level to create…anything you like. Food. A new laptop. A copy of Kate Bush’s debut album, The Kick Inside. Anything, providing you can give it both the raw materials and the blueprint for creation.

It sounds like science fiction—although, with the advent of 3D printers in recent years, less so than it used to. Burke, who hosted the BBC show Tomorrow’s World, which introduced bemused and excited audiences to all kinds of technologies, has a decades-long track record of technological predictions. He isn’t alone in envisioning the nanofactory as the technology that will change the world forever. Eric Drexler, thought by many to be the father of nanotechnology, wrote in the 1990s about molecular assemblers, hypothetical machines capable of manipulating matter and constructing molecules on the nano level, with scales of a billionth of a meter.

Richard Feynman, the famous inspirational physicist and bongo-playing eccentric, gave the lecture that inspired Drexler as early as 1959. Feynman’s talk, “Plenty of Room at the Bottom”, speculated about a world where moving individual atoms would be possible. While this is considered more difficult than molecular manufacturing, which seeks to manipulate slightly bigger chunks of matter, to date no one has been able to demonstrate that such machines violate the laws of physics.

In recent years, progress has been made towards this goal. It may well be that we make faster progress by mimicking the processes of biology, where individual cells, optimized by billions of years of evolution, routinely manipulate chemicals and molecules to keep us alive.

But the dream of the nanofabricator is not yet dead. What is perhaps even more astonishing than the idea of having such a device—something that could create anything you want—is the potential consequences it could have for society. Suddenly, all you need is light and raw materials. Starvation ceases to be a problem. After all, what is food? Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulphur. Nothing that you won’t find with some dirt, some air, and maybe a little biomass thrown in for efficiency’s sake.

Equally, there’s no need to worry about not having medicine as long as you have the recipe and a nanofabricator. After all, the same elements I listed above could just as easily make insulin, paracetamol, and presumably the superior drugs of the future, too.

What the internet did for information—allowing it to be shared, transmitted, and replicated with ease, instantaneously—the nanofabricator would do for physical objects. Energy will be in plentiful supply from the sun; your Santa Clause machine will be able to create new solar panels and batteries to harness and store this energy whenever it needs to.

Suddenly only three commodities have any value: the raw materials for the nanofabricator (many of which, depending on what you want to make, will be plentiful just from the world around you); the nanofabricators themselves (unless, of course, they can self-replicate, in which case they become just a simple ‘conversion’ away from raw materials); and, finally, the blueprints for the things you want to make.

In a world where material possessions are abundant for everyone, will anyone see any necessity in hoarding these blueprints? Far better for a few designers to tinker and create new things for the joy of it, and share them with all. What does ‘profit’ mean in a world where you can generate anything you want?

As Burke puts it, “This will destroy the current social, economic, and political system, because it will become pointless… every institution, every value system, every aspect of our lives have been governed by scarcity: the problem of distributing a finite amount of stuff. There will be no need for any of the social institutions.”

In other words, if nanofabricators are ever built, the systems and structure of the world as we know them were built to solve a problem that will no longer exist.

In some ways, speculating about such a world that’s so far removed from our own reminds me of Eliezer Yudkowsky’s warning about trying to divine what a superintelligent AI might make of the human race. We are limited to considering things in our own terms; we might think of a mouse as low on the scale of intelligence, and Einstein as the high end. But superintelligence breaks the scale; there is no sense in comparing it to anything we know, because it is different in kind. In the same way, such a world would be different in kind to the one we live in today.

We, too, will be different in kind. Liberated more than ever before from the drive for survival, the great struggle of humanity. No human attempts at measurement can comprehend what is inside a black hole, a physical singularity. Similarly, inside the veil of this technological singularity, no human attempts at prognostication can really comprehend what the future will look like. The one thing that seems certain is that human history will be forever divided in two. We may well be living in the Dark Age before this great dawn. Or it may never happen. But James Burke, just as he did over forty years ago, has faith.

Nvidia toont kunstmatig intelligentie-platform voor zelfrijdende auto's

Gepubliceerd: 08 januari 2018

Matt Toomey — January 9, 2018

In case you’ve been worried about the imminent takeover of self-aware robots who calculate our inevitable extinction, there’s some good news: At this point, they can be foiled by a Grateful Dead sticker.

At the most recent Neural Information Processing Systems conference in Long Beach, California, a group of Google engineers revealed that the image recognition technology in advanced machine learning systems can be completely disrupted with a simple psychedelic sticker.

One of the images the team used as an example was a banana, which the machine could easily recognize. However, when the image of a psychedelic swirl was placed next to the banana, the machine was lured away from the banana and registered that the picture was “of” the swirl.

Afbeelding

Just as the human eye does, AI uses cognitive shortcuts to comprehend images. The eye will attribute more importance to certain pixels over others. When the eye sees a picture of a house or a boat, for example, it will know that the picture is not “of” the sky, or a cloud, or the ocean, etc., despite those images also being present. The Google engineers exploited these cognitive shortcuts by creating psychedelic images that were so mesmerizing, the AI involuntarily fixated on them. This is done on a system-specific, not image-specific basis, so the resultant scrambler patch will generally work no matter what the image recognition system is looking at.

The bad news is this may throw a wrench into the predictions of machine learning making us more secure, particularly when it comes to contraband screening at airports and other high-risk locations. But the good news is that Skynet isn’t ready for rollout just yet.

Baby-Making Sex Robots ‘Not So Difficult’, Says Samantha Creator

By Mike Brown, on October 23, 2017

Afbeelding

The scientist behind an advanced sex robot has plans for 3D printed offspring. Samantha, developed by Spanish robotics firm Synthea Amatus, went on sale in the United Kingdom last month for around $5,000 — but while the A.I. present in the initial version offers a range of functions like telling jokes, discussing philosophy and synchronizing climaxes, a future version could offer more ambitious features.

“I can make them have a baby. It’s not so difficult. I would love to have a child with a robot,” Sergei Santos, creator of Samatha, told The Sun in a Friday story.

Sex robots are a growing, but controversial, area of artificial intelligence. While some argue that such machines could spark a wider discussion about sexuality, others object to the aim to replicate human interaction. Futurologist Ian Pearson claims that by 2050, more than half of people will have sex with a robot.

Santos’ plan to develop his machine further focuses on the “brain” component of Samatha’s system. The whole machine stands 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs around 100 pounds and has an array of 11 sensors designed to respond to the user’s touch. Santos plans to upgrade the internal computer, which has an SD card slot to support software updates, with concepts around human values like beauty and justice.

“Then to create a child with this robot it would be extremely simple,” Santos said. “I would make an algorithm of what I personally believe about these concepts, and then shuffle it with what she thinks and then 3D print it. That’s it. I 3D print the robot that is the child of me and the robot... I don’t see any complications.”

Synthea Amatus has big plans to make Samantha go global. Santos worked with business partner Arran Squire to get the doll to market. The pair have struck a deal with a Chinese sex doll factory, and they have further plans to come to the United States and become “the biggest sex robot company in the world.”

It’s faced some hiccups during its initial public outings, though. The machine was on display at the Ars Electronica Festival in the city of Linz, Austria, but it had to be taken away after “barbarian” attendees “heavily soiled” Samantha.

First-Ever Drone Swarm Attack Has Struck Russian Military Bases, Sources Claim

PETER DOCKRILL, 11 JAN 2018

Afbeelding

We knew this day was coming.

Ever since technological advancements made drones possible, people have warned of the potential dangers of weaponised UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), which could effectively become murderous slaughterbots we need to defend ourselves against.

Now, it looks like those fears have become a reality. The Russian Ministry of Defence claims its forces in Syria were attacked a week ago by a swarm of home-made drones – the first time such a coordinated assault has been reported in a military action.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Russian forces at the Khmeimim air base and Tartus naval facility "successfully warded off a terrorist attack with massive application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)" last Friday night.

Afbeelding

"As evening fell, the Russia air defence forces detected 13 unidentified small-size air targets at a significant distance approaching the Russian military bases," the Ministry said in a statement.

"Ten assault drones were approaching the Khmeimim air base, and another three – the CSS point in Tartus."

Six of the assault force drones were intercepted by Russian electronic warfare units, with three of the UAVs being brought to land outside the base, while the remaining three exploded on contact with the ground.

Another seven drones were "eliminated" by Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missiles fired by the Russians, with the bases reporting no casualties or damage, the statement explains.

If the report is accurate, the Russian forces are lucky the attack wasn't worse, because whoever unleashed these drones wasn't fooling around.

While photographs of the improvised UAVs used in the assault make the drones look clunky and strung together, the Russians' analysis reveals they were armed with explosives and launched from a site more than 50 kilometres (31 miles) distant from their targets, navigating the trek via GPS and altitude-control sensors.

The Ministry says a technical examination indicates these drones would have an effective attacking range of about 100 kilometres (62 miles) – which is pretty terrifying – and means that in the new era of UAV warfare, locations that once may have seemed immune to attack, are in fact exposed.

"They thought the base was secure, but now it seems it is vulnerable," Maxim Suchkov of the Russian International Affairs Council told The Washington Post.

Afbeelding

It's unknown who launched the swarm, with the attack being unclaimed at present. But the Russians have hinted that the technology used was too advanced for local militants, seen as a suggestion it could have been supplied by US forces in the vicinity – something the Pentagon says is "absolutely false".

There's an awful lot about this incident that's unconfirmed right now, but one thing we can be sure of is this technological first could usher warfare into a terrifying new chapter – and towards a grim future scientists have been desperately warning we need to prevent.

"Who knows how accurate some of these details really are, but if the number of drones launched at the facility is anywhere near correct, it would seem to be the first self-contained, large scale, coordinated, standoff drone assault on a fixed installation like this," Tyler Rogoway reports at The Drive.

"It seems that the age of drone swarms has arrived, and that's a terrifying reality to comprehend."

This is what a 50-qubit quantum computer looks like

Nick Summers - 01.09.18 in Gadgetry

Afbeelding

From afar, it looks like a steampunk chandelier. An intricate collection of tubes and wires that culminate in a small steel cylinder at the bottom. It is, in fact, one of the most sophisticated quantum computers ever built. The processor inside has 50 quantum bits, or qubits, that process tasks in a (potentially) revolutionary way. Normally, information is created and stored as a series of ones and zeroes. Qubits can represent both values at the same time (known as superposition), which means a quantum computer can theoretically test the two simultaneously. Add more qubits and this hard-to-believe computational power increases.

Last November, IBM unveiled the world's first 50-qubit quantum computer. It lives in a laboratory, inside a giant white case, with pumps to keep it cool and some traditional computers to manage the tasks or algorithms being initiated. At CES this year, the company brought the innards -- the wires and tubes required to send signals to the chip and keep the system cool -- so reporters and attendees could better understand how it works. The biggest challenge, IBM Research Vice President Jeffrey Welser told me, is isolating the chip from unwanted "noise." This includes electrical, magnetic and thermal noise -- just the temperature of the room renders the whole machine useless.

That's where the pumps would normally come in. From top to bottom, the system gradually cools from four Kelvin -- liquid-helium temperatures -- to 800 milliKelvin, 100 milliKelvin and, finally, 10 milliKelvin. Inside the canister, that's 10 thousandths of a degree above absolute zero. The wires, meanwhile, carry RF-frequency signals down to the chip. These are then mapped onto the qubits, executing whatever program the research team wishes to run. The wiring is also designed in a way to ensure that no extraneous noise -- including heat -- is transported to the quantum computer chip at the bottom.

Many in the industry have suggested that a 50-qubit system could achieve "quantum supremacy." The term refers to the moment when a quantum computer is able to outperform a traditional system or accomplish a task otherwise thought impossible. The problem, though, is that quantum computers are only compatible with certain algorithms. They're well-suited to quantum chemistry, for instance, and material simulations. But it's unlikely you'll ever use a quantum computer to complete a PowerPoint presentation. "The world is not classical, it's quantum, so if you want to simulate it you need a quantum computer," Welser said.

Researchers have already conducted experiments with quantum computers. Scientists at IBM were able to simulate beryllium hydride (BeH2) on a seven-qubit quantum processor last September, for example. But critics want to see a quantum computer accomplish something more tangible, which is more meaningful for the everyday consumer. That day, unfortunately, could still be a long way off.

"Somewhere between 50 and 100 qubits, we'll reach the point where we can at least say very clearly, 'I've just simulated a molecule here in a few minutes time that would have taken this giant system five days to do.' That level we'll be at fairly rapidly. When it gets to something that the public will understand in terms of an application they would use themselves, I can't really speculate at this point," Welser said.

Light-Based Computers May Soon Become a Reality

By Philip Perry - December 7, 2017

Afbeelding

Pretty soon, we’ll no longer be able to base computers on electronics. We can only make the microchip so small. At some point, the silicon chip will grow so thin that the amount of power used to perform calculations will melt it. Other models have been in the works, quantum computing for example. But that’s difficult and the process it’s built upon, not well understood.

Another option is light-based computing, which would be extremely fast, more energy efficient, and could store much more information than traditional ones. One of the reasons it’s so much better is, such a system produces little to no heat. Optical computing may also be well suited for deep learning, an essential part of the most recent developments in A.I. Since deep learning takes tremendous amounts of computation, the dramatic increase in computing power could allow scientists to take A.I. to a whole other level.

Though it sounds futuristic, the concept of optical computers is more than 50 years old. In the 1960s, Bell Labs and other tech giants sunk millions of dollars into trying to bring light-based computing to fruition, with little to show for it. What they sought is a computing version of the Holy Grail, the light equivalent to the transistor.

A normal computer today relies on carefully orchestrated electronic circuits. They switch one another on or off as required. While optical computing relies on beams of light interacting. This would take place in a photonic computer chip, using beam splitters to guide the light along.

Afbeelding
The microchip can only grow so small. Soon, a totally new system must replace it. Credit: CSIRO, Wikimedia Commons

The trouble is, photons operate very differently from electrons. While electrons fight resistance, photons don’t. Electrons when they meet naturally interact. Photons on the other hand, don’t influence each other much. These issues must be overcome before we can supplant the microchip with a photonic one. But in a way we already use such techniques. We already transfer internet connection via fiber optic cables. And yet electronics are required to process the transmission, once it arrives at your computer.

Now, scientists at Imperial College London have announced a development. They’ve figured out a way to get rid of the electronic piece, and do it all with pure light. Their results were published in the journal Science. The heart of their breakthrough lies in what’s known as nonlinear optics. This is passing light through optical crystals to cause certain effects. Such crystals allow photons to interact with one another.

Ever use a green laser pointer? This is a prime example. Since a green laser is hard to make in a direct way, within the device, the laser passes through a crystal. Inside of it, every two photons merge. Each union results in a single photon with twice the energy, allowing the laser to turn green. Usually, the effect gained by nonlinear optics is weak. What’s been done in the past, is to use a lot of material and grow the effect, until it becomes significant. To gain a substantial effect however, it must be performed over a distance too long to incorporate into computers.

Afbeelding
The internet already travels over fiber optic cables. How to get it to operate inside our computers is the tricky part. Credit: Chaitawat, Pixababy.

Using nonlinear optics, Imperial College scientists were able to decrease the distance the light needed to travel by 10,000 times. So what would’ve needed centimeters of material now only requires micrometers of it. Note that one micrometer equals one millionth of a meter. This is the exact scale needed to allow optical computers to become viable. So how did they do it?

They squeezed the light into a very small passageway, only about 25 nanometers wide. By doing so, the light became more intense as the photons within it were forced to merge over the short distance. The channel was also coated with a polymer once earmarked for use in solar panels. The most exciting part, this system can be integrated into current computer models.

Researchers also cured another problem with nonlinear optics. Since different colored light passes through materials at different speeds, they can become “out of step,” with one another. Here, with the light traveling just a short distance, there’s no time for disharmony.

GM plans car without a steering wheel or pedals for 2019

Kia Kokalitcheva, Jan 12

Cruise's next-generation car. Photo: Cruise

Cruise, General Motors' autonomous vehicle unit, plans to mass produce a self-driving car without a steering wheel or pedals by 2019, the company said on Thursday. It says it has submitted a safety report as well as an application to regulators to approve the design, its fourth-generation model.

Caveat: Though 2019 is a year away, only seven states currently allow for driverless cars, and Cruise's home state of California is in the process of passing a bill to allow for this. It has also applied for needed exemptions to federal regulations.

The car: Along with the omission of driver-centric features, Cruise's next-generation car is designed for ride-hailing passengers in mind. Riders will be able to summon one via a mobile app and adjust settings like interior temperature.

Competition: Cruise has several competitors, most notably Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving car unit. Waymo has been working on self-driving cars since 2009 and has been testing its cars in a few locations, including a pilot test program in Arizona it debuted last year.

[*] Cruise employees have been testing summoning rides from in San Francisco. However, it's not clear what Cruise's future plans are, besides its plan to make the new car available sometime in 2019. So far, Cruise isn't doing the kind of small-scale pilots being undertaken by its self-driving car rivals.
