TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp has designs on making robot helpers for your home, and has enlisted a Japanese startup that specializes in artificial intelligence to jump-start its plan.

Japan's biggest automaker and Tokyo-based Preferred Networks Inc will carry out joint research to develop so-called service robots that are "capable of learning in typical living environments", the companies said in statements on Wednesday.

The two firms have already been collaborating on driverless vehicles since 2014.

Eighty-year-old manufacturing giant Toyota is trying to transform itself and adapt to technology, such as ride-hailing and automated driving, that is disrupting the auto industry.

Toyota sees robots as part of that effort, particularly in Japan, where it aims to have them in homes and hospitals to support one of the world's fastest ageing populations.

For the project announced on Wednesday, Toyota said it would provide a dozen units of its Human Support Robot, or HSR, to Preferred Networks.

The companies will cooperate on development over the next three years, including the sharing of intellectual property.

Preferred Networks is already using the robot as a platform for its advanced artificial intelligence software. At an exhibition in Tokyo last year the robot tidied a messy room, distinguishing between trash and dirty towels.

Toyota has been working on service robots since 2004, and has a number of models under development. But HSR is the one it sees as closest to being ready for commercial applications.

Basically a single arm on a wheeled base with a sensor-filled head on top, the robot will also be used at next year's summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, to help with simple tasks such as fetching drinks for some spectators.

A Look At The Emerging Electric Aircraft Sector

Matt Bohlsen - Aug. 9, 2019

The era of electric aircraft is just starting now. Initially, we can expect to see very small electric aircraft flying short range trips. Next, we can expect the larger aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing (BA), Airbus (OTCPK:EADSF) (OTCPK:EADSY), and others to use hybrid aircraft. Beyond that, anything is possible, especially if technology continues to advance.

US Navy to ditch touch screen ship controls
The US Navy is replacing touch screen controls on destroyers, after the displays were implicated in collisions.

Unfamiliarity with the touch screens contributed to two accidents that caused the deaths of 17 sailors, said incident reports.
Poor training meant sailors did not know how to use the complex systems in emergencies, they said.
Sailors "overwhelmingly" preferred to control ships with wheels and throttles, surveys of crew found.
[...]
Service news website USNI reported that Rear Adm Bill Galinis, who oversees US Navy ship design, said the control systems were "overly complex" because shipbuilders had little official guidance on how they should work.
As a result, he said, the control systems on different ships had little in common, so sailors often were not sure where key indicators, such as a ship's heading, could be found on screens.
In addition, he said, a fleet survey about attitudes to the display-driven controls was "really eye-opening".
"We got away from the physical throttles, and that was probably the number one feedback from the fleet - they said, just give us the throttles that we can use," said Rear Adm Galinis.

The survey showed a desire for wheels and throttles that, prior to the introduction of touch screens, were common across many different types of vessel.
The US Navy was now developing physical throttle and wheel systems that can replace the touch screens, USNI said. The service plans to start the process of replacing touch screens in the summer of 2020.

A team of physicists from New York University, Wayne State University and the University at Buffalo has found experimental evidence for a transition between trivial and topological superconductivity in a quantum mechanical device called a Josephson junction. This breakthrough offers promise for increasing storage capabilities in electronic devices and enhancing quantum computing.

"This new topological state can be manipulated in ways that could both speed calculation in quantum computing and boost storage," said Dr. Javad Shabani, a physicist at New York University.

"Our work centers on quantum computing — a method that can make calculations at significantly faster rates than can conventional computing."

"This is because conventional computers process digital bits in the form of 0s and 1s while quantum computers deploy qubits to tabulate any value between 0 and 1, exponentially lifting the capacity and speed of data processing."

In the research, Dr. Shabani and colleagues analyzed a topological phase transition, measuring the energy barrier between the two states.

They supplemented this by directly measuring signature characteristics of this transition in the order parameter that governs the new topological superconductivity phase.

"Here, we focused the inquiry on Majorana fermions," the researchers explained.

"We see value in these particles because of their potential to store quantum information in a special computation space where quantum information is protected from the environment noise."

"As a result, we have sought to engineer platforms on which these calculations could be conducted."

"The new discovery of topological superconductivity in a two-dimensional platform paves the way for building scalable topological qubits to not only store quantum information, but also to manipulate the quantum states that are free of error," Dr. Shabani said.

The team's work was published on arXiv.org.

Volocopter gets safety nod in push for air taxis of the future

By Nancy Cohen, Tech Xplore - August 23, 2019

How far off are we from hopping on and off air taxis as a familiar local mode of transport? Eyes this week were fixed on one company aggressively keeping up its bit to open commercial routes and bring this type of mobility to life.

Volocopter on Wednesday presented its latest air taxi design, dubbed VoloCity. The machine can accommodate two people and hand luggage.

Ben Sampson, Aerospace Testing International, noted that this is actually the fourth electrical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) iteration but "the first that meets the new European Aviation Safety Agency standards."

"The EASA international certification baseline published in July 2019 (EASA SC-VTOL-01) requires air taxis to be as safe as airliners. The VoloCity is developed to live up to these standards," said the company's web site.

Popular Mechanics saw the news as a sign that we could be getting a step closer to the flying taxi.

Volocopter is a German company, and made the news back in 2011 with a manned flight of an electrically powered vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The company also got headlines in its public flight performances in Dubai in 2017 and during CES last year.

Its to-do list is driven by a missing part of the challenge. In addition to getting the flying machine to work successfully, the work ahead is to build out the environment that will have these air taxis operating realtime. As the company news release said, it was about "building up the operational environment such as the physical take-off and landing infrastructure and integrating into air traffic management systems of interested cities."

David Grossman talked about this in Popular Mechanics. "Even with a working VoloCity, there's still the infrastructure of flying taxis to build out."

Moving forward, the company news release reported that "Volocopter is working with global players like Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) to optimize passenger and ground procedures and align regulations with the relevant authorities."

Ben Sampson in Aerospace Testing International: "Volocopter is also developing a network of terminals, so-called "VoloPorts" and is working on ways to integrate its air taxis into air traffic management systems of cities. The company, which plans to run the aircraft and infrastructure for fleets of Volocopters, is partnering with companies such as Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport to achieve this."

Earlier this year, Tech.eu interviewed Volocopter's Alex Zosel, who was asked how would the air copters integrate into everyday city life.

"Volocopter's biggest focus right now is building up an infrastructure for mobility in the third dimension... The first Volocopter routes will likely connect main transportation hubs, such as airports and business parks, to city centers. For example, we currently have a project with Fraport AG, which is one of the biggest airport managers in the world. The idea is to link up our air taxi service with trains, buses and commercial airlines and provide a connection to and from Frankfurt Airport. There will be a lot of changes in mobility in cities over the next few years and we want to be part of building a new ecosystem for air taxi providers."

Woodrow Bellamy III, editor-in-chief of Avionics: The company has plans for the new design's first test flight to occur later this year in Singapore. Bellamy wrote about the taxi features, which include 18 total rotors with aerodynamic rotor beams and a stabilizer designed to increase stability in flight and additional lift.

The company news release noted technical and safety features that included redundancy in all critical systems, a low noise signature and "rigid commitment to the inner-city mission."
The commercial variant will have the calculated range up to 35 km (21.7 miles). The VoloCity can fly at a speed of 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour).

If a little less than 22 miles does not seem to be very far, one can be reminded that this is designed to be a local means of getting around, as an on-demand city air taxi. "But Volocopter hopes the VoloCity doesn't need to hit top speeds or have extended range, at least at first," said Grossman.

Wetenschappers kweken minihersenen die hersengolven produceren

Vivian Lammerse, 30 augustus 2019

Sajal Afzal, August 29, 2019

Our environment is not getting any healthier, but recently Break the Grid initiative proposed a plan to solve the problem.

The plan sounds peculiar, but it does ensure efficiency. The initiative proposed 3D printers that can manoeuvre on their own, with the help of legs and artificial intelligence.

The brain behind this initiative includes three Danish companies. GXN Innovation, the Danish AM Hub, and Map Architects worked on giving this idea a vision.

They imagined the outlook of the printer, and the unimaginable things that it could do like flying, swimming and crawling.

The three kinds of robots cater to three different problems. So, the crawling robot with six legs is designed to use asphalt to fix the cracks in the roads.

The swimming printer is supposed to build artificial reefs, by mixing together glue and sand. The artificial reefs aim to control erosion. Whereas, the flying robot will reduce heat transfer in high buildings.

However, this is just a vision. But before seriously considering their manufacture, there is a serious concern to be catered. GXN Founder, Kasper Jensen, expressed a need to decide whether 3D printers should be sent out in the world.

He also said that building such robots and leaving them in the world will be a 'revolution in the making'.

In addition to that, he also explained that these robots can solve bigger environmental problems with better efficiency, and a lower cost.

3D Printer robots with flying, crawling and swimming tendencies can truly bring an environmental change. And we hope that the change is for the better!

OUT OF THIS WORLD ‘World’s first SPACE hotel’ revealed with artificial gravity and stunning ‘Earth view’ cabins for 400 astro-tourists

Charlotte Edwards, Digital Technology and Science Reporter - 2 Sep 2019

DESIGNS for the 'first space hotel' have been revealed and it's as weird and futuristic as you would expect.

The orbiting space station is designed to accommodate 400 guests and has facilities that you find in top hotels such as restaurants, bars and a cinema.

The commercial space hotel has been designed by The Gateway Foundation.

It has called the creation the Von Braun Space Station and has plans for it to build upon technology that is already used in the International Space Station (ISS).

However, instead of being used for scientific purposes, it would be more like an orbiting cruise ship with luxury accommodation and cocktail bars.

The designers also think there will be space for educational seminars in the hotel though.

Afbeelding

Unlike the ISS, the aim is for the space hotel to have artificial gravity so guests can walk around as normal.

This would make staying there long term more feasible and short stays much more comfortable.

The hotel has been designed in a 190-metre-diameter wheel shape.

The plan is for this wheel to rotate so it creates a similar gravitational force to the one that is felt on the Moon.

It will house 24 individual pods with sleeping accommodation inside.

Egyptian Teenager Creates Next-Generation Quantum Space Propulsion System

08/16/2015

An Egyptain teenager has patented a next-generation propulsion system that could send spacecraft to other solar systems—without using a single drop of fuel. While it is not quite warp-drive technology, young physicist Aisha Mustafa’s system is based on quantum physics and could see mankind boldly go where no man has gone before.

The 19-year-old is further proof that young minds produce fresh new ideas. Her propulsion system gets rid of traditional rocket boosters in favor of a more futuristic concept. For those of you who aren’t up to scratch on quantum physics, Mustafa’s idea works on the principle that space is not a vacuum. Instead, it is filled with a roiling sea of particles and anti-matter particles that are created and then destroy themselves in a blink of an eye.

Mustafa believes that this quantum effect can be harnessed via the dynamic Casimir effect. This utilizes a “moving mirror” cavity, where two reflective flat plates are held close together and then manipulated in order to interact with the quantum particles. By moving the plates (which are made of silicon), energy is created out of nothing and a net force is created which would be used to push, pull or propel a spacecraft.

In terms of energy usage, it is most like solar power in how the energy is used, and is much more efficient than the rocket fuel that is currently used to power spacecrafts. Current rockets, like the Dragon X, are tricky to control due to the energetic thrusters, and even NASA’s futuristic proposals such as ion drives still need power—even the USS Enterprise needed dilithium crystals. That is what makes young Mustafa’s system all the more amazing, it doesn’t need fuel and provides astronauts with much greater control of their spacecraft. It would also transform how satellites are controlled, allowing for simpler, cheaper and more reliable missions.

I would not be surprised to see more of Aisha Mustafa in the near future. Sohag University has already aided her with the patent application and she has already said she intends to keep developing the system before it is tested in outer space. Of course, as Egypt doesn’t exactly have a space agency, she may have to move abroad to see her dream become a reality.

People 50 and older have a lot to look forward to, according to Juvenescence's Greg Bailey—mainly that we won't be aging as fast or poorly as our parents. "Science fiction has become science," said the UK-based anti-aging biotech's CEO about the company's completing its $100 million Series B round of financing last week. "I think the world is going to be shocked," he said in an interview. In total, Juvenescence has now raised $165 million in just 18 months to fund longevity projects with the lofty goal of extending human lifespans to 150 years.

Bailey said the money will allow the company "to progress all of our products." And there's quite a list of potential therapies. "We have 12 programs based on hard, rigorous science, to try to modify aging. From stem cell research to senolytics to modifying or preventing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases," he said.

It's no secret that anti-aging is big business. According to Endpoints News, "Bank of America has forecast the market will balloon to $610 billion by 2025, from an estimated $110 billion currently."

"I think there's a huge amount of skepticism. There's an enormous number of charlatans…I understand why they would be thinking you know, is this real?" Bailey told Endpoints. "Walk into your local drugstore, you're going to see about 50 products that claim to be anti-aging, and I can assure you that none of them are."

Bailey said creams that claim everything and do nothing and vitamins that basically give users "expensive urine" are the reason for that skepticism.

And investors are not as quick to step up as he would like. Bailey told Endpoints: "We're dramatically being underserved…it's not getting the exposure that tech gets, considering the size of the market." He said he believes there is "a disconnect" on how investors and institutions are viewing anti-aging technology. "I don't think they quite grasp how fast this is going to happen, and how big it's going to be."

And according to Market Watch, Juvenescence has a fair share of competition, including: Life Biosciences, the Boston-based company founded in 2016 by scientists David Sinclair and Tristan Edwards to invest in the eight pathways of age-related decline. "In January, Life Biosciences raised $50 million in a Series B financing – twice its original target - to grow its portfolio of ‘daughter companies' which carry out their own research and development programs," Market Watch reported.

Investors are also closely watching Rejuvenate Bio—the start-up, co-founded by Harvard Medical School professor George Church, Market Watch reports. The company is testing 60 different age-reversing gene therapies. "The company, which carried out initial tests on beagles, claims it can reverse aging in animals by adding new DNA instructions to their bodies," Market Watch reported. "It has announced plans to launch a trial later this year to combat mitral valve disease, a condition which is common in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed and directly caused by ageing."

Among the Juvenescence-backed programs is one from AgeX Therapeutics. The company focuses on targeting human aging with new therapies and medicines. Currently AgeX is studying stem cells for tissue and organ rejuvenation. "Stem cells are programmed to die. The cells AgeX are creating are stem cells we could give to you, and they could bind to your heart and fix your heart," he said. "They are creating cell lines from a single cell of tissue from IVF clinics. These are all living embryonic cells."

Bailey said with the company's PureStem® cell-based technologies, it has the ability to generate pluripotent or self-renewing stem cell-derived young cells of any type to potentially cure a range of age-related degenerative diseases. For example, the company hopes to one day be able to inject the cells locally into the damaged portion of an individual's heart or spinal cord. "They would be one-day old cells, not 70-year-old cells," Bailey said.

And, according to its website, with its induced Tissue Regeneration (iTR™) longevity platform, AgeX hopes to "unlock cellular immortality and regenerative capacity to reverse age-related changes in the body."

Healthier, longer lifespans with new tissues and organs will be a reality sooner than anyone thinks, Bailey said. "We are just learning so much so fast," Bailey said. "It's happening now. It's not in the future, and it will happen faster than people think. The potential to regrow a lung or a limb is extraordinary."

Juvenescence-backed biotechnology company, LyGenesis, Inc., hopes to enter human trials next year on a therapy that could potentially give patients with end stage liver disease hope for new livers without having to wait on donated organs. The technology uses lymph nodes as bioreactors to regrow functioning organs within a patient's own body. "In the U.S., we don't have enough livers to do transplants—which are a $700,000 procedure," Bailey said. The company is working on injecting cadaver cells into lymph nodes to grow secondary livers, he said.

Fueled by research from Eric Lagasse, PharmD, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh (UPIT) and LyGenesis' Chief Scientific Officer, the research found that a variety of different cells types and tissues, including the liver, could engraft and actually grow within lymph nodes.

"Remarkably, we were able to get these transplanted cells to organize, proliferate and vascularize into functioning ectopic organs, which rescued animals from otherwise fatal cases of organ failure," Lagasse said in a statement. The research is funded in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and conducted at UPIT's McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Michael Hufford, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of LyGenesis, said the technology could address the problem of the imbalance between organ supply and demand. Instead of one donated organ treating just one patient, one donated organ could serve as the seed to treat dozens of patients simultaneously, he said. And procedures using Lygenesis' technology would not require major transplantation surgery, Hufford said in a statement, "but would instead use a minimally invasive outpatient endoscopy, decreasing costs while enabling patients considered too sick or having too many comorbidities to qualify for traditional organ transplantation to receive treatment."

"Wouldn't it be amazing if you were a diabetic and you could create a new pancreas from your own lymph nodes?" Bailey asked. "The things happening are going to be extraordinary."

There is almost no limit to what tissue regeneration therapies could do to improve and lengthen the human lifespan, Bailey said. "If a child cuts off the tip of his finger and they are under the age of seven, it can regrow. We have that capability in us, but we lose it at a certain age. We are now learning how to turn that back on in adults. It is possible to regrow a kidney or a limb. And you know, I'm mindful that if you live to 150, people don't want to be all wrinkled and in a wheelchair. So what we want to be able to do is regenerate tissues," Bailey said.

Aside from Juvenescence, he noted the 2017 study on middle-aged fruit flies wherein UCLA biologists developed an intervention that serves as a cellular time machine—substantially improving the animals' health while significantly slowing their aging. The ongoing mitochondria-focused research aims to lead to therapeutics that could delay the onset of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and cardiovascular disease as well as cancer, stroke and other age-related human diseases.

Then there are the joint ventures with companies such as Alex Zhavoronkov's AI shop at Insilico Medicine and the Buck Institute, where the biotechs and researchers at each company have combined their knowledge to form partnerships with Juvenescence to develop small molecules as new targets to attempt to extend life spans.

Juvenescence is backed by British International biotech investor, Jim Mellon, who launched the company in 2017 and then wrote a 400-page guide to investing in the field of longevity.

The study of aging and longevity is growing in popularity as well as fueling hope that humans could actually live into their 150s. "It is a popular vision. Inspired by Mellon, venture capitalist Sergey Young—who is in charge of all things longevity at the non-profit XPRIZE and VC fund BOLD Capital Partners—unveiled a $100 million fund with the same goal in February," Endpoints' Natalie Grover reported last week. "Google-owned stealthy biotech Calico is after the same prize — and has partnered with AbbVie $ABBV."

Nanalyze, a website that offers information for investors on emerging technologies, recently published a list of the top 10 companies working to increase longevity. Insilico Medicine and AgeX are among them.

Bailey said Juvenescence expects to have at least four anti-aging products on the market within seven years.

He likened the outcome of anti-aging research to the study of flight. "In 1903, two brothers flew a glorified kite for 14 seconds, the Kitty Hawk. Fifteen years later they were flying planes in WWI, and 35 years later, the Germans had invented the jet. Sixty-five years later we landed a man on the moon. For robotics and for aging, divide that number by 10. That's how fast this is going to happen."

Harvard University: The Near Future of Cybernetics Transpires

By Alex Vikoulov [Posted September 9, 2019 10.30 am PST]

Researchers are blurring the distinction between brain and machine, designing nanoelectronics that look, interact, and feel like real neurons. Camouflaged in the brain, this neurotechnology could offer a better way to treat neurodenerative diseases or control prosthetics, interface with computers or even enhance cognitive abilities.

Electrodes implanted in the brain help alleviate symptoms like the intrusive tremors associated with Parkinson's disease but current probes face limitations due to their size and inflexibility. In a recent paper titled "Precision Electronic Medicine", published in Nature Biotechnology, Shaun Patel, a faculty member at the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, and Charles M. Lieber, the Joshua and Beth Friedman University Professor, argue that neurotechnology is on the cusp of a major renaissance. Throughout history, the most successful scientists have dimmed discipline lines to tackle problems larger than their individual fields.

"The next frontier is really the merging of human cognition with machines," says Patel. "Everything manifests in the brain fundamentally. All your thoughts, your perceptions, any type of disease." Researchers see mesh electronics as the foundation for these mind controlled technologies, also called cybernetics, a synthetic bridge between brain and machine. "Today, research focused at the interface between the nervous system and electronics is not only leading to advances in fundamental neuroscience, but also unlocking the potential of implants capable of cellular-level therapeutic targeting," write the authors in their paper.

Currently, when the brain's complex circuitry starts to misbehave or degrade due to psychiatric illnesses like addiction or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's, or even natural aging, patients have only two options for medical intervention: drugs or, when those fail, implanted electrodes. FDA-approved electrodes can provide relief through Deep Brain Stimulation. Like a pace maker, a battery pack set beneath the clavicle sends automated electrical pulses to two brain implants. Each electrode "looks like a pencil. It's big," according to Lieber.

In contrast, Lieber's mesh electronics provoke almost no immune response. With close, long-term proximity to the same neurons, the implants can collect robust data on how individual neurons communicate over time or, in the case of neurological disorders, fail to communicate. Eventually, such technology could track how specific neural subtypes talk, too, all of which could lead to a cleaner, more precise map of the brain's communication network.

With higher resolution targets, future electrodes can act with greater precision, eliminating unwanted side effects. If that happens, they could be tuned to treat any neurological disorder. And, unlike current electrodes, Lieber's have already demonstrated a valuable trick of their own: They encourage neural migration, potentially guiding newborn neurons to damaged areas, like pockets created by stroke. "The potential for it is outstanding," says Patel. "In my own mind, I see this at the level of what started with the transistor or telecommunications."

The potential of course reaches beyond therapeutics: Adaptive electrodes could provide heightened control over prosthetic or even paralyzed limbs. In time, they could act like neural substitutes, replacing damaged circuitry to re-establish broken communication networks and recalibrate based on live feedback. Mesh electronics still have several major challenges to overcome: scaling up the number of implanted electrodes, processing the data influx those implants deliver, and feeding that information back into the system to enable live recalibration.

A few major technology companies are eager to champion brain-machine interfaces. Some, like Elon Musk's Neuralink, which plans to give paralyzed patients the power to work computers with their minds, are focused on assistive applications. Others have broader plans: Facebook wants people to text by imaging the words, and Brian Johnson's Kernel hopes to enhance cognitive abilities.

Researchers from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have developed the world’s first all-optical neural network for deep machine learning – bringing artificial intelligence a step closer to matching human brains in tackling complex problems such as pattern recognition or risk management, and at much lower energy consumption at the speed of light.

For a long time, optical computation has been limited to linear multiplication*. With only linear multiplication, a neural network cannot be used for deep machine learning which simulates human brain functions. Deep machine learning in AI requires a multilayer neural network in which nonlinear activation functions are necessary components. But in a conventional hybrid optical neural network, nonlinear activation functions – which simulate the way neurons response in human brains, are implemented electronically, thereby restricting both the speed and power. Now, a research team led by Prof. DU Shengwang and Prof. LIU Junwei from HKUST’s Department of Physics, demonstrated the first-of-its-kind multilayer all-optical artificial neural network, making large-scale optical neural networks a step closer to reality.

In addressing the challenges, the team used cold atoms with electromagnetically induced transparency – which only require very weak laser power – to carry out nonlinear optical activation functions and developed a two-layer fully-connected all-optical neural network. The network was tested for classifying the order and disorder phases of the Ising model in condensed matter physics, and the outcomes were proven as accurate as a well-trained computer-based neural network.

Prof. Du said, “While our work is a proof-of-principle demonstration, it shows that a new generation of optical artificial intelligence – which functions much faster at much lower energy consumption, is possible.”

Prof. Liu added, “Going forward, we hope to expand the scale of this approach to build a bigger all-optical neural network with more complex architectures for practical applications such as image recognition.”

The finding was recently published in the authoritative journal Optica, and featured as a news release by the Optical Society.

Atlas the humanoid robot shows off a new and improved gymnastics routine

Darrell Etherington / 4:27 pm CEST • September 24, 2019

Boston Dynamics has been teaching its old bots new tricks — Atlas, its humanoid robot that walks on two legs, can now do a surprisingly elegant gymnastics routine, tumbling into a handstand, followed by cartwheels and including a jump twist. This level of athleticism (can a robot express “athleticism”?) is incredibly impressive, given that this is a 330 lb robot that could “barely walk” in 2013 when the prototype was first developed.

Atlas’ movement in this routine is at once incredibly human-like, and also something beyond human — especially when it turtles in preparation for its first somersault. This isn’t the first time that Atlas has displayed parkour skills, but Boston Dynamics says that it is using new techniques to make the process of programming these maneuvers much easier — by translating automatically (using a newly developed optimization algorithm) descriptions of the movements involved into motions that the robot can actually manage, given its mobility limitations.

This allows them to create new routines much faster than was possible previously, and it’s able to complete the routine as intended around 80% of the time — pretty good odds, even for a human gymnast.

New hypersonic engine poised to cut London-Sydney flight times to just four hours by 2030s

Sarah Knapton, Science Editor, at the UK Space Conference in Newport - 25 September 2019

Afbeelding
The new ‘Sabre’ engine will allow faster, greener and cheaper air travel.

Tourists could fly from Britain to Australia in just four hours by the 2030s with a new hypersonic engine being developed by UK scientists, the head of the UK Space Agency has said.

Reaction Engines, who are based in Oxfordshire, are in the process of building a hybrid hydrogen air-breathing rocket that will allow a plane to fly at Mach 5.4 - more than twice the speed of Concorde - then speed up to to Mach 25 in space.

Not only would the new ‘Sabre’ engine allow speedier journeys - with a flight between London and New York slashed to just over an hour - but the hydrogen/oxygen engine would be far greener and cheaper than current air travel.

The team is currently trialling parts of the engine in Denver, Colorado, and is hopeful to begin test flights in the mid 2020s, before commercial flights in the 2030s.

The government has already invested £60 million in the engine, which has been matched by Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, and Boeing.

Afbeelding

“I really like the concrete sense of a bridge linking us, and when we have brought the Sabre rocket engine to fruition, that may in a sense be the manifestation of that space bridge, enabling us to get to Australia in perhaps as little as four hours,” said Mr Turnock.

“Once you’ve got hypersonic engines operating then that kind of journey time is achievable.
“This is technology that could definitely deliver that. We’re talking the 2030s for operational service, and the work is already very advanced.”

Supersonic commercial flight - faster than the speed of sound - has not been available since Concorde was scrapped in 2003 following a catastrophic crash in 2000 in which 109 people died.

Hypersonic - which is five times the speed of sound - is even harder to achieve because travelling so fast causes the engine to melt. Fighter jets achieve it through a complex cooling system but their engines are large, expensive and inefficient.

The new Synergetic Air Breathing Rocket Engine (Sabre) – works by chilling the incoming air from 1800F (1000C) to zero using tiny tubes of super-cooled helium. The captured heat is also used to power the engine.

The hybrid engine allows a spaceplane to take off horizontally and reach speeds of Mac 5.4 - 4,000 mph for fast commercial travel, and also switch to rocket mode, allowing for space travel at Mach 25 (19,000mph).

As well as aerospace, the new engines could be used in the automotive industry and motorsport, or for energy production.

Speaking at the UK Space Conference, in Newport, Shaun Driscoll, of Reaction Engines, said: “The main thing with Sabre is it’s like a hybrid of a rocket engine and an aero engine, so it allows a rocket to breathe air.

“Most rockets are vertically launched, and if you look at spacecraft you have a tiny satellite at the top and a huge massive rocket, because just carrying fuel means you need more fuel so it’s a horrible cycle.

“Rockets really haven’t progressed in 70 years, whereas aero engines have become very efficient, so if you can combine an aero engine and a rocket you can have a very lightweight efficient propulsion system and basically create a space plane.

“The challenge of going very fast to escape the atmosphere you have to go hypersonic, and you generate a lot of heat travelling fast. Our pre-cooler takes air that arrives at 1,000 degrees centigrade and cools it down to zero in one twentieth of a second in something you can get your arms around.

“The physics checks out but the challenge is building a test regime.”

Afbeelding
The hybrid engine allows a spaceplane to take off horizontally and reach speeds of Mac 5.4

Will Whitehorn, the incoming President of UK Space, the umbrella group for the space industry, said the engine was crucial for cutting journey times and building infrastructure in space.

If you can find a way to act like a jet engine in the atmosphere and a rocket engine in space then you have cracked one of the big conundrums of space launch.

“Concorde had to use a conventional engine. The point of the reaction engine it can switch from one that feeds on oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere to one that doesn’t require the feeding of oxygen, but that technology is the technology that would revolutionise space launch.

“It would not only allow you to fly around the world hypersonically, and take people from London to Australia outside the atmosphere and have far less long term effect on the atmosphere but it will also allow you to rapidly get much more technology into space.”

Musk’s nieuwe Sterrenschip moet volgend jaar al de lucht in

Vivian Lammerse, 30 september 2019

Afbeelding

Why The Future Will Be An Unimaginable Utopia Beyond Our Wildest Imaginations

Humanity is moving ever faster towards a perfect world, but we’ll probably never get all the way to perfect. A somewhat plausible alternative to this utopian future is that humanity destroys itself. Typical science fiction dystopias, on the other hand, are quite unrealistic, in my view.

Interstellar is one of my favorite movies, but there’s one thing about it I don’t like; it’s set in a dystopian future where sandstorms and blight make it increasingly difficult for humans to survive. Although science fiction is my favorite genre, it annoys me a bit that science fiction movies are often dystopian to some degree.

Unfortunately, news media also have a tendency to focus on the negative, so it’s not surprising if you have a negative view of the world today. And with science fiction movies often being dystopian, it’s not surprising if you have a negative view of the future as well. But if we look at the bigger picture – the trends – how the world is changing – we actually see that some very positive changes have been – and are – happening.

A brain-inspired computer can now simulate part of the sensory cortex in real time, using tens of thousands of virtual neurons. It is the first time such a complex simulation has run this fast and could be an important step towards building better brains for robots.

The SpiNNaker supercomputer at the University of Manchester, UK, features 57,000 specialised chips with a total of 1 million processing units, known as cores. It is designed to run programs that simulate how the human brain works.

Researchers have succeeded in building an artificial neural network representing 1 mm² of cerebral cortex and capable of processing information at the same speed as biology, thanks to a new architecture. A performance that illustrates the tremendous progress made in recent years by artificial intelligence to mimic the human brain.

Reproducing the biological functioning of the human brain is the dream of all researchers in artificial intelligence. A team from the University of Manchester claims to have succeeded in mimicking the functioning of a small part of the primary motor cortex, 77,000 neurons or 300 million synapses. "This is the first time that we have been able to replicate the human brain in real time at a speed equivalent to that of biology," says Oliver Rhodes, the author of the study published on the arXiv website. Oliver Rhodes and his colleagues managed to run their model for 12 hours at a constant speed.

A sharing of tasks between neurons

In this model representing 1 mm² of cortex, the artificial neurons are arranged in layers and connected to each other by multiple connections. Each neural nucleus receives electrical impulses either directly from the neurons to which it is directly connected or delayed signals from other synapses. When the accumulation of signals exceeds a certain threshold, it unlocks a response in the form of an electrical pulse. "The main problem with brain simulations is the peak activity that a neural nucleus must manage to decide which neurons to stimulate in return," says Oliver Rhodes. This overload leads to an increase in processing time and a loss of efficiency. To overcome this difficulty, researchers have developed a strategy called "heterogeneous parallelization", where neurons work simultaneously in a cooperative way: some are responsible for updating the neural state, others manage direct signals and others manage the "packets" of delayed signals. Not only does this reduce the load assigned to each nucleus, but signal packets are now directed to each nucleus according to their type (inhibitor or exciter). "The inhibitory synaptic nuclei therefore only treat the peaks reported as inhibitors", and not all the signals, explains Oliver Rhodes.

When the artificial neural networks reach their limits

If neuromorphic chips are of such interest to researchers, it is because artificial silicon neural networks are a real energy drain when it comes to performing millions of calculations in parallel. "The traditional computers on which they are run are based on an architecture dating back to the 1950s, which separates memory and the computing centre into two distinct blocks," explains Damien Querlioz, a researcher at the Centre de nanosciences et de nanotechnologies at the CNRS. As a result, "each neuron must fetch data stored sometimes very far away on the scale of microelectronics". As the number of calculations increases, we end up with terrible "traffic jams" that consume a lot of energy to access memory. The AlphaGo program, Google's AI that recently beat the greatest go champions, consumes 10,000 times more energy than a human being. In the brain, computational and memory tasks are combined: schematically, neurons played the role of calculator and synapses that of memory. This architecture is less gifted at calculating but much more efficient when it comes to recognizing a cat on an image, for example.

According to Markus Diesmann, a researcher at the Jülich Research Centre in Germany who designed the SpiNNNaker model, a neuromorphic artificial brain such as the one developed by Oliver Rhodes could equip robots that would then become as talented as humans. We are still far from that: the human brain contains no less than 100 billion neurons and one million billion synapses, far from the 77,000 neurons of this artificial minibrain.
