En het komt uit het grote reli-gekkenhuis geheten Pakistan.
Hier zie je duidelijk hoe de cartoons gebruikt worden om politiek gewin te krijgen. De Mohammedanse vakbond Sunni Tehreek doet staken en verzameld steun met behulp van de cartoons.
De stand is nu: 1 uitgebrand café, 9 uitgebrande auto's, 15 mensen met kogelwonden, 20 arrestaties. Alle winkels waren dicht en bussen reden zelden en scholen waren nogal leeg. Een duidelijk machtsvertoon van de 'usual suspects' zoals de Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Jamat Ahl-e-Sunnat (JAS) en de Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP).

Strike against blasphemous cartoons: Nine vehicles torched, over six injured in Karachi
KARACHI: Nine vehicles were torched and over half-a-dozen people reportedly sustained bullet wounds during the strike called by the Sunni Tehreek (ST) for Friday. Meanwhile, the police have reportedly taken over a dozen ST workers in custody since Thursday night and the ST has claimed that the arrests were because its workers were just trying to create awareness among people by distributing leaflets, etc.

Nearly 15 people, including two ST workers, sustained bullet injuries because of aerial firing in separate parts of the city. The injured include Saleem, 30, (New Karachi), Shahrukh Khan, 18, (Shafiq Mor), Yawer, 42, (Korangi), Sajjad, 10, (Soldier Bazaar), Kauser Khan (Gulistan-e-Johar), Ghulam Hussain (Risala), Manzur (Saeedabad), Sakina and Mateen (Orangi Town), Atiq (Ranchore Lane), Ali Gohar, Yousuf, an unidentified person (North Karachi) and two ST workers, Saqib and Muslim Qadri, from Shah Faisal Colony and Taimoria respectively.

Meanwhile, nine vehicles and one café were reportedly burnt in different parts of the city.

“We have taken 11 ST workers in custody since Thursday night,” said Karachi Police Chief Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui. “Seven of them were taken into custody as they fled after setting fire to two vehicles in Landhi Town, while four others were taken into custody from Saddar Town as they forcefully closed shops early Friday morning. Cases will be registered against them for taking the law into their own hands.”

Siddiqui said that strict security measures were taken by law enforcers because of which the whole day passed relatively peacefully and without any major incidents. “Just four vehicles were burnt Friday, two of them at Yousuf Plaza and two at Sukhan,” said Siddiqui.

He further said that nearly seven people were reported hurt and it is difficult to judge in which incidents they had sustained bullet injuries.

However, ST central leader Shahid Ghouri, while taking to Daily Times, denied the police chief’s accusations and said that the ST did not cause any disturbance in the city as it was a strike against those who are hurting the Muslims. He added that it was the responsibility of all Muslims to make the strike successful.

“Nearly 20 ST workers were taken into custody from different parts of the city,” claimed Ghouri.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Jamat Ahl-e-Sunnat, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP), Tanzeem-ul-Madaaris Ahl-e-Sunnat Pakistan (TMASP), traders, transporters and others groups supported the strike.

Major markets including Jamma Cloth, Bolton, Motan Das, Electronic, Empress, Ranchor Line, Garden, Automobile, Mobile Phone Market on Abdullah Haroon Road, Rainbow Centre, Zaib-un-Nissa Street and others remained closed. The majority of the petrol pumps and CNG stations were also closed while their administration set-up tents around the property to ensure safekeeping.

Public transport also worked at a short frequency because of which attendance at public and private schools, colleges and offices remained low. Police and rangers mobiles patrolled the streets to keep the law and order situation under control.

To protest the blasphemous publications, rallies and demonstrations were organized in different parts of the city after the Friday prayers. JI Karachi organized a demonstration outside Masjid Nauman at Lasbela Chawk. JI Karachi Ameer Muhammad Hussain Mehanti demanded the Pakistani government protest Denmark on a governmental level, oust the Dutch and Danish ambassadors from Pakistan and announce a break-up of diplomatic and trade relations with both Denmark and Holland.

Het afgebeelde vrouwtje moet de echtgenote Cheryfa MacAulay Jamal voorstellen. Zij is van plan om de regering aan te klagen om vele miljoenen te krijgen omdat zij en haar familie en echtgenoot Qayyam Abdul Jamal geleden hebben onder terrorisme beschuldigingen en haar echtgenoot zonder veroordeeld te zijn, gevangen heeft gezeten. En wel als 1 van de 18 van Toronto.

Ik ben benieuwd of ze de wet zo kunnen draaien dat 2 personen ook een groep vormen. Of dat ze op de hak genomen worden omdat ze zijn wie ze zijn en niet omdat ze afgebeeld worden vanwege iets dat ze gedaan hebben.

Hitoshi Igarashi, Tsukuba University assistant professor of literature and translator of the novel by Salman Rushdie, was found murdered on the morning of July 12, 1991, near his office on the university campus in Ibaraki Prefecture, 69 kilometers north of Tokyo. He was stabbed in the abdomen and his neck was slashed. He was 44 years old when he was killed. The case is still unsolved.

At issue is a 90-second "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" video segment that depicts Dio Brando, a villain, picking up a Quran from a bookshelf and apparently examining it as he orders the execution of the hero and his friends.

The animation is based on the widely popular manga by Hirohiko Araki that appeared in the weekly Shonen Jump from 1987 to 2003. The Japanese publisher said the Quran does not appear in the print version.
The scene in question is in episode six of the animated video "Stardust Crusaders," which was produced by A.P.P.P (Another Push Pin Planning) Co. in 2001.

A pirated version of the cartoon series with Arabic subtitles has been available on the Internet since March 2007.
Someone posted negative comments and a still from the video, sparking a groundswell. Messages on the topic have appeared in more than 300 Arab and Islamic Web forums, with some accusing Japan of insulting the Quran.

Sheikh Abdul Hamid Attrash, chairman of the Fatwa (religious edict) Committee at Al-Azhar, the highest Sunni authority, based in Cairo, called the cartoon an insult to Islam.
"This scene depicts Muslims as terrorists, which is not true at all," he said. "This is an insult to the religion, and the producers would be considered to be enemies of Islam."

Responding to the accusation, the Shueisha official said it was "a simple mistake."
"Neither the original comic nor the animation intends to treat Muslims as villains. But as a result, the cartoon offended Muslims," the official said. "We apologize for the unpleasantness that the cartoon may have caused and will carefully consider how to deal with religious and culture themes."

The official said one of the animators came up with the idea of using an Arabic book to give the scene a more authentic feel, as the villain was hiding out in Egypt.

With that in mind, the animator took out a library book, which turned out to be the Quran, and used it for the scene. No one realized the mistake because no one at the company could read or speak Arabic, the official said.

Reactions on the Web have included taking offense at the villain reading the Quran and the alleged underlying message suggesting children who read the Quran will become villains.

"There are prejudiced pictures about the greatest and purest divine book, our Great Quran, in a new cartoon series called 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure' . . . what is the purpose of putting in these pictures?" a well-circulated Net message asks.
Qannas al-Jazira, one of the most active members of Al-Hesbah, a major Islamic Web site used as a clearing house for Islamic militants' statements, wrote: "There is a wicked man in a cartoon series called 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure' and this villain appears in a clip while reading the Holy Quran . . . even the Japanese began to depict Muslims as evil persons and terrorists in their cartoon films."

Despite the apology from the publisher, some are not willing to accept the error.
Aly Yassin, owner of a Cairo Internet cafe, said he believes the object of the Japanese producers was to say: "This evil character derives its subversive ideas from this book, the Holy Quran. . . . This indicates the deep-rooted rancor against Islam and the misconceptions about Quran meanings. This is unjustifiable."
Still others, including Gamal Qutb, ex-head of the Fatwa Committee at Al-Azhar, were even tougher, suggesting Muslims should boycott Japanese products unless Japan takes action against the video.

Step 8: Muslim leaders proclaim that Islam is mollified (for the moment), and the world returns to a state of multicultural harmony.

Geregeld heeft de Joodse organisatie B'nai Brith gebruik gemaakt van deze commissies om mensen buitenrechterlijk veroordeeld te krijgen voor anti-semitisme. En nu zijn ze zelf het haasje.
B'nai Brith accused of hate speech

The Jewish human rights group has long been co-operative with and supportive of Canada's human rights commissions, but has recently called for reform to prevent their hijacking as a political platform. This is the first and only time it has been named as a respondent in a hate speech case.

Ze ervaren nu hoe het is om rechteloze beklaagde te zijn. En ja, de vrees voor politieke kidnapping die ze uitten: wie zijn er gespecialiseerd in kidnappen van alles en nog wat?

"The [Manitoba] Human Rights Commission itself is supposed to be promoting human rights, but in our view in this process it's violating some pretty basic rights: a secret proceeding, a faceless accuser, failure to disclose documents. These are basic procedural rights that are being violated," said David Matas, a prominent human rights lawyer and senior legal counsel to B'nai Brith.

Het gebeurde in 2003 dat er een conferentie werd gehouden ("Islamic terrorism") en 4 maanden later kwam de klacht :

De klacht indienster was zelf niet aanwezig geweest op de conferentie. Het is volkomen onbekend tegen welke uitspraken er bezwaar is.
Het is zo vaag als wat:

"Based on comments from some in attendance that the presentation was biased against Muslims, I conclude that the content of the seminar presented a negative prejudice about Muslims in terms of being probable terrorists. This prejudiced picture would encourage and support racial profiling by first responders and law-enforcement agencies dealing with possible terrorist incidents," the complaint reads.

Wat voor verdediging kan je hier nu tegen voeren?
Dat het 4 jaar duurt is wel erg lang. Daar moet een punt achter gezet worden. Dus komt er een onafhankelijke expert de zaak bezien:

This year, with the case apparently stalled after four years, the MHRC appointed an independent expert to make a determination on the case, which will inform its decision whether to reject it or send it for a tribunal hearing. The way I read this decision is that it imposes a two part test: a) are your words offensive and hurtful? b) are you a major media organization with deep pockets represented by serious lawyers. If “a” and not “b” you are a hate monger; if “a” and “b” you are engaged in political debate.

Deense schrijfster ‘met tegenzin akkoord’

De prestigieuze Amerikaanse Yale Universiteit haalt alle afbeeldingen van Mohammed uit een boek over de cartoonrellen, uit angst voor geweld van moslims. ‘Mijn boek is nu deel van de geschiedenis die het beschrijft’, zegt auteur Jytte Klausen.

In november verschijnt The Cartoons that Shook the World. Het is een reconstructie van de crisis begin 2006, toen honderden stierven bij geweld in islamitische landen, naar aanleiding van blasfemisch geachte prenten in een Deense krant. ‘Wat wás ik eerst blij met Yale University Press’, zegt Klausen. ‘Een fantastische uitgeverij.’
‘Het is geen anti-islamboek’, zegt de in Denemarken geboren politicologe, zelf hoogleraar aan de Brandeis Universiteit in Massachusetts. Sterker, Klausen vindt sommige van de cartoons islamofoob, vergelijkbaar met antisemitische propaganda uit de vorige eeuw. Volgens de man die ze toen plaatste in de Jyllands Posten, chef cultuur Flemming Rose, is Klausen ‘politiek correct’.

En hoe ging het onder druk zetten te werk? Natuurlijk met een dreiging van verantwoordelijkheid voor geweld in Mohammedaanse landen.

Toch besloot Yale dat dit werk niet compleet mocht worden gepubliceerd. ‘Ik wilde de cartoons erin opnemen, om de beeldtaal te bespreken’, vertelt Klausen. ‘Maar eind juli kwam Linda Koch Lorimer, vicepresident van Yale, tweeënhalf uur naar Boston rijden om daar in een hotel koffie met mij te drinken. En me te vertellen dat de universiteit – zonder mij in te lichten – meer dan twintig deskundigen had geraadpleegd. Die hadden, zonder het boek te lezen, geadviseerd om de cartoons weg te laten. Amerikaanse belangen zouden worden geschaad. Geweld tussen moslims en christenen in Nigeria zou volgen, zeiden ze. Ik ging met tegenzin akkoord. Ik kon niet bij een andere uitgeverij aankloppen met het verhaal dat ik bij Yale weg was wegens veiligheidsrisico’s.’

Hoe komt Nigeria er ineens bij geslopen? Want alhoewel de 20 deskundigen onbekend zijn, eentje wel en als die indicatief is voor de rest, tja...

De enige bekende bron is Ibrahim Gambari, adviseur voor de secretaris-generaal van de VN en oud-minister van Buitenlandse Zaken in Nigeria. Hij voorspelde volgens de universiteit ‘rellen van Indonesië tot Nigeria’.

En hij is de soort man die daar voor kan zorgen (tenminste in zijn thuisland).
En wat heeft de auteur verder op te merken? Dat de cartoonrellen een georganiseerde zaak was, wat deze censuur toch duidelijk ook aantoont:

Klausen is het niet eens met de risico-inschatting. ‘Ik heb met die tekeningen onder de arm door het Midden-Oosten gereisd, er zelfs met de Moslimbroederschap over gesproken. Ik heb hier zicht op: er zouden geen rellen zijn gekomen van dit boek. De strekking is juist dat er nooit spontane ongeregeldheden zijn geweest, maar dat die werden gemanipuleerd door de Egyptische regering.’ De spotprenten zijn ook nog vaak herdrukt zonder dat geweld volgde.

De gerechtelijke molens werken langzaam. Nu pas (na 3 1/2 jaar) is bekend dat Geert Wilders (en NOVA van de Staats-TV en die enge club AEL) niet vervolgt gaat worden voor het verder bekendmaken/publiceren van de 'Deense cartoons'.

Two Chicago Men Charged in Connection with Alleged Roles in Foreign Terror Plot That Focused on Targets in Denmark
Headley, a U.S. citizen who changed his name from Daood Gilani in 2006 and resides primarily in Chicago, was arrested on Oct. 3, 2009, by the Chicago FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) at O’Hare International Airport before boarding a flight to Philadelphia, intending to travel on to Pakistan. He was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit terrorist acts involving murder and maiming outside the United States and one count of conspiracy to provide material support to that overseas terrorism conspiracy.

Rana, a native of Pakistan and citizen of Canada who also primarily resides in Chicago, was arrested on Oct. 18, 2009, at his home by federal agents. The organisation published an interview with Jytte Klausen, the Danish author of The Cartoons That Shook The World, a book about the illustrations of Muhammad that caused a furore, but chose not to reproduce them in its magazine.

Jonathan Dimbleby, the presenter of Any Questions?, who is chairman of Index, says: "The board does not readily interfere in the day-to-day editorial decisions taken by the Index on Censorship staff, but this case was different.

"The board's main concern was both for individual members of the Index staff and those who worked for the other organisations which share our Free Word premises, and who would have been equally on the receiving end of any attack."

Het nieuwe jaar begint slecht voor Kurt Westergaard (als pessiment bekeken) of goed (als optimist bekeken.).
Een gek (?) probeerde zijn huis binnen te dringen terwijl die allerlei (hakbar?) kreten slaakte, Kurt drukte de alarmknop in en vluchtte met o.a. zijn kleindochter van 5 de gepanserde badkamer in. De politie was er snel en schoot de man neer (niet dood).

Politiken settles Mohammed cartoon issue

As the first newspaper to do so, the Politiken newspaper has reached a settlement with descendants of the Prophet Mohammed in connection with the affront its re-print of drawings of the Prophet Mohammed in 2008 may have caused Muslims.

The settlement was reached between Politiken and eight organisations representing 94,923 of the Prophet Mohammed’s descendants in a move Politiken’s Editor-in-Chief Tøger Seidenfaden says shows that dialogue is the way forward.
The Organisations and clients represented by the Law Firm of Ahmed Zaki Yamani by attorney-at-law Mr. Faisal A. Z. Yamani, of Saudi Arabia, noting Politiken's statement, confirm that the Dispute is settled, and agree not to pursue any legal or administrative action against Politiken.

Onderzoekende journalisten hebben het niet makkelijk: van de 8 betrokken organisaties wist de krant er maar 1 te noemen en die meldde niks noppes nada op zijn site. Maar op Al-Jazeera bracht het wel met virtueel trompetgeschal.

Defamation case over Prophet Mohammed cartoons 'to be held' in Britain
A Saudi Arabian lawyer has threatened to use British courts to overturn a Danish free speech ruling by bringing a defamation case over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that depicted Islam's founder as a terrorist.
Faisal Yamani, a Jeddah based lawyer, is planning to take a case to London's libel courts on behalf of over 90,000 descendants of Mohammed who have claimed that the drawings have defamed them and the Islamic faith.

Cartoon caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed were published in Danish newspapers in 2006 triggering violent protests across the Muslim world and riots which claimed the lives of over 50 people.

According to Danish press reports, the case can be heard in the Britain because the images, including a caricature of Mohammed with a bomb shaped turban, have been freely accessible via the internet.
Danish politicians and publishers are furious that European Union rules reward "libel tourism" by enforcing British defamation rulings across Europe.
Ebbe Dal, managing director of Danske Dagblades Forening, the Danish national newspaper association, is concerned that Britain's tough libel laws could be used to restrict free speech in liberal countries such as Denmark.

"The Danish courts have decided that the case is not actionable and that we are allowed to print the drawings in Danish newspapers and websites," he said.
"It would be very odd if a civilised country like Britain could go against that. If this succeeded we would have to pay a lot of money to Saudi Arabians misusing the British courts to make it difficult for freedom of speech."

Mr Yamani demanded last year that 11 Danish newspapers remove all cartoon images of Mohammed from their websites and issue front page apologies along with promises that the images would never be printed again.
Only one newspaper, Politiken, agreed to the demand leading to the new threat of an expensive British court action backed by wealthy Saudi Muslims.

Lars Barfoed, the Danish justice minister, has complained to the European Commission that EU rules forcing Denmark to enact British court rulings would damage freedom of expression.

"It's fundamentally reasonable that judgments in the EU can often be exercised across borders. But it would be taking it to the extreme if a UK court could rule against the Danish media and then require compensation and court costs to be paid," he said.
EU officials have acknowledged that libel judgements in the British courts have become a major issue since "Rome II" rules on mutual recognition of European court rulings entered into force last year.
"We are well aware that there is a problem with libel and defamation tourism involving Britain, where judges can be sympathetic and damages awards are high. There will be a review next year," said an official.
A British Ministry of Justice working group on libel law is expected to publish a report calling for reform later this month.
"The government is concerned about any potential chilling effect that our libel laws are having on freedom of speech," said a spokesman.

het heeft eventjes gehangen in de Grenada City Hall maar de pret was gauw voorbij want de burgemeester had klachten gekregen, en boze Moslims, dat kan echt niet. Dus plaatje verwijderd. Is geen censuur. Plaatje mag elders gehangen worden want plaatje zelf is niet verboden.
