A foster couple yesterday declared that they had been ‘horrified’ for years about grown men masquerading as child refugees.

Sarah and Giles, who have fostered dozens of child asylum seekers, said several had turned out to be adults, but social services had ‘no interest’ in being told.

After reading this week about widespread doubts over the ages of some young men coming from Calais, they said: ‘We could never understand why this has not come out before.’

Using assumed names because they fear reprisals if they are identified, Sarah and Giles said one boy, supposedly 15, lived with them for two years and attended a local school. But when he eventually left them, he revealed: ‘You English are so stupid – I’m in my twenties.’

They said dentists and GPs routinely turned away their foster ‘children’ because they could tell they were actually grown men.

But they were ‘fobbed off’ when they warned social services, and worried they would be accused of racism if they made a fuss.

Speaking from their home in an English university town, Sarah and Giles said all they wanted to do was offer love and support to child refugees, but were instead expected to provide a home for men pretending to be children and send them to schools with genuine youngsters.

Sarah said: ‘How would you feel if your teenage daughter was sharing a class with one of these men?

‘We have been horrified about this for years. Young men are taken in with no proper check on their histories. They are placed in family homes – our home – and schools.

‘Who knows what they have done, or been through – no one knows anything about their past.

‘It is very common for them to have January 1st birthdays, because the Home Office just gives them arbitrary dates of birth.’

The couple, who have grown-up children of their own and have been fostering for more than a decade, said they warned social services whenever they had suspicions.

But Sarah said: ‘Nothing was ever done. Our concerns were just fobbed off. Social services would just tell us, “Oh, he has had a hard life”.

‘This is not about doubting the word of refugees – it is about a very important child protection issue. You are placing men with unknown troubled backgrounds into a school environment, where schoolchildren are supposed to be safe, and a foster environment which is our home.

‘We might also be looking after a child abuse victim from Britain who could be very vulnerable.’

Giles said they both felt Britain should show pity and compassion to youngsters who were alone, penniless and without parents, often from horrifying backgrounds.

But based on years of experience, they are convinced more rigorous age and health checks are needed.

He said: ‘In the absence of age assessments, which should include the opinion of doctors and dentists, child protection agencies are placing men of unknown backgrounds and histories in family homes and school environments too. This has been happening for years.
‘We are speaking out because we have witnessed disturbing events. We have no axe to grind. We are welcoming of all nationalities, cultures and religions, but the service we provide is supposed to be for children.

‘We have many times wondered why the authorities have not taken steps to age-assess young people who look to be adults and our bewilderment has increased when still no age assessment has been undertaken when dentists and doctors have stated – unprompted – that in their professional opinion a particular young person is an adult.’

Sarah and Giles have fostered many genuine children – some of them migrants and some troubled English youngsters – who have gone on to lead successful lives.

They have kept dozens of fond messages sent by grateful recipients of their care. ‘One of our foster cases went to university. We were so excited when he graduated,’ said Sarah.

Explaining the process that often leads to them fostering a migrant, she said: ‘It usually starts in the night, with a call from a duty social worker who says, “The police have stopped a truck of migrants and one is claiming to be under 18. Can you take him?” But it isn’t long before the tell-tale signs the “child” is really an adult begin to emerge.

‘The first thing they want is a razor. It’s a dead giveaway. We have boys of our own, but some of these asylum kids have beards and growths only fully-grown adults have.’

Youngsters being fostered by the couple live in their tidy semi-detached home, with photographs of their high-achieving children on the mantelpiece, and dogs sprawled by the fireplace. To become a foster parent meant giving their lives to the task.

Giles worked in the construction business, but now the couple make themselves available ‘24 hours a day’, said Sarah. They said they found fostering rewarding most of the time, but had become increasingly frustrated.

Sarah added: ‘The issue of checking ages is huge. By the time they come here, they have clearly been coached in what to say. They know their rights.

‘They get about £60 a week – cash – in their hands, for clothes, haircuts, mobile phones. They know it’s in their best interests to go into foster care. They know what a social worker is, and how much money they are entitled to. Once they come out of foster care they go straight to the top of the housing list.

‘We took in a boy from Africa. There is a story they all tell when they are picked up, about having lost all their papers and not being able to speak English. But this one walked in, spotted our TV and blurted out, “Oh great, EastEnders!”

‘We have a friend who gave up foster caring because she didn’t feel safe in her own home. She is a tiny woman and was sharing her home with grown men pretending to be children. It is ridiculous. We don’t want to give up, but it is hard.’

They get an allowance of £100 to £300 a week to cover their expenses.

‘You have to be able to afford to foster. You can’t make money out of it, but you do have to pay the bills,’ said Sarah.

‘We were motivated because we wanted to make a difference. But it is not easy. It is highly intrusive, and every year you get a minimum of one unannounced visit and they go over every square inch of your house.

‘It is very rigorous, but it is understandably thorough because you are looking after vulnerable children.

‘This makes it all the more ridiculous that they can then put an unknown adult, pretending to be a child, into the household with barely any checks on them.'

‘ENGLISH ARE SO STUPID’
Asked to take in a 15-year-old boy from Albania, Sarah and Giles enrolled him in the local school the very next day.

‘We were waiting in the corridor when we looked around and he had lit up a cigarette, which was not a great start,’ recalled Sarah.
‘He had a shirt undone to his stomach and a gold medallion and winklepicker-type shoes. He lived with us for two years and went to school as a 15 and 16-year-old.

‘But later we found a wage slip he had left lying around which showed he had been working.

‘But he was using a different name complete with a National Insurance number.

‘When he left us he laughed and said, “You English are so stupid – I’m in my twenties”. Ruefully, we had to agree with him – it felt like a slap in the face.

‘We notified social services, but no action was taken.’

THE UNBELIEVING MEDICS

Giles took another refugee ‘boy’ to the dentist. He recalled: ‘The dentist said the boy had had his wisdom teeth for some time. He told us he could not treat him as a child and not to bring him back.

‘When we told social services they just said, “We’ll have to find another dentist”. It didn’t prompt a proper investigation.’

Sarah added: ‘We took one to an elderly GP who told us, “If that lad is 14, I am 23”.’

BOY WITH INFECTIOUS DISEASE

Sarah said they had looked after one boy with TB and another with an infectious disease, which could be passed on by a drop of blood.

She said: ‘He had been using my hairbrush. If I had scratched my scalp with it I could have been infected. I paid £250 for a health check to make sure I was clear.’

‘SCHOOLBOY’ WHO WAS RUMBLED

Only one time was a ‘boy’ caught out. Sarah said: ‘We had one boy for two months. He told police he was 14.

‘A social worker arrived for a visit and brought their manager, who was horrified. She said, “There’s no way he’s a child”. He was gone that day to a hostel for men.’

Kinderen worden op den duur ook volwassenen dus er is geen speciale reden om die voor te trekken, tenzij je denkt dat je tieners (want echte kinderen zijn het sowieso niet) nog op het rechte pad kunt brengen als je maar genoeg je best doet. Shariarechtbanken worden opgericht in Britse winkelkelders

In Groot-Brittannië bestaan veel meer shariarechtbanken dan eerder gedacht. Dat zegt een voorstander van legalisering van de controversiële islamitische rechtbanken in Groot-Brittannië.

De shariarechtbanken, die vooral worden gebruikt voor het regelen van huwelijken en scheidingen, worden opgericht in moskeeën, bij mensen thuis en in de kelders van winkels. De geïmproviseerde rechtbanken blijken een enorme bron van inkomsten: de religieuze leiders hanteren vaak hogere tarieven dan in normale rechtbanken.

Eenderde van islamitische huwelijken niet erkend

‘Sommige mensen zeggen dat het er tachtig, of dertig of vijftig zijn,’ zegt sharia-expert Ahmad al-Dubayan, voorzitter van het ‘bestuur van shariarechtbanken’ tegen een comité van Britse parlementariërs. ‘We hebben geen idee hoeveel precies, daar zijn helaas geen gegevens van.’

Vooral familiezaken worden in de rechtbanken beslecht. Zeker eenderde van de islamitische huwelijken wordt niet erkend door de Britse wet, omdat een aantal moslims alleen volgens de voorwaarden van de sharia trouwt. Parlementariërs maken zich zorgen over duizenden vrouwen die mogelijk zijn ‘opgesloten’ in probleemhuwelijken: de moslima’s kunnen in zo’n geval geen scheiding aanvragen bij de Britse rechtbank.

Al-Dubayan pleit niet voor een strengere aanpak van de illegale rechtbanken, maar juist voor legalisering en regulering. ‘Er zijn grote problemen met deze rechtbanken. Meestal beschikken ze over te weinig middelen en wetenschap om processen in goede banen te leiden.’

‘Enkele gevallen van discriminatie’

In Nederland ontstond recentelijk ophef over shariarechtbanken na de publicatie van een boek van onderzoeker Machteld Zee. Ze waarschuwt tegen de rechtbanken en het islamitisch familierecht in Westerse landen. Zee maakt zich vooral zorgen over de gevolgen voor vrouwen: ‘Hoe vrij is die keuze om naar een shariaraad te gaan, als het alternatief is om in je land van herkomst in de gevangenis te komen, of gestenigd worden,’ zegt de jurist in een interview met Trouw.

Al-Dubayan houdt vol dat het allemaal wel meevalt. Volgens hem gaat het om enkele gevallen waarbij tegen vrouwen werd gediscrimineerd, uit de honderden processen die worden afgehandeld door de shariarechtbanken.

The murderer of schoolgirl Milly Dowler turned Muslim while in jail in 2011 and began calling himself Yusuf Rahim.

He is one of a huge number of lags allegedly enjoying benefits including better meals, as part of the transition.

Bellfield reportedly eats only halal meat and prays to Allah five times a day at Durham's Frankland Jail.

It comes amid a surge in Muslim inmates in recent years, with one in five of those serving sentences in Britain's maximum security jails now said to be following Islam, according to union officials.

The Prison Officers' Association has put that down to thousands of lags becoming so-called "convenience Muslims" - converting to the religion to deliberately play the system.

A report into prisons five years ago, called Muslim Prisoners’ Experiences backed that up when it said those in jail see “perks” in converting to Islam, including better food and protection.

It added they were also being made even more vulnerable to radicalisation.

Bellfield was jailed for life in 2011 for murdering the 13-year-old in 2002 and killing Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22, as well as attempting to murder Kate Sheedy, 18, in 2004.

The 47-year-old is suspected of carrying out over 100 rapes.

But Bellfield, like some others, changed his religion to save his own skin, and get a better life behind bars, sources claim.

In a recently published letter to a journalist, Bellfield said of his new-found religion: “Reference my Muslim status, this is between me and the almighty Allah.

“Maybe one day, you will find this beautiful faith.”

When he originally converted, staff at Wakefield prison, in West Yorkshire, said he was out to to impress the Muslim extremists who have given him a hard time while he has been incarcerated there.

A prison insider also said it was "generally accepted" that Halal food was better than other meals.

Speaking to The Mirror, a prison officer said: "Bellfield is doing this for better meals and a cushier life. He has the right to pray five times a day so it gives him a break.

"Some staff think he may have become a Muslim to impress the extremists he had trouble with."

He has been attacked in prison a number of times, and was handed a £4,500 payout in 2014 after suffering cuts and bruises in one assault.

Soon into his prison sentence he received death threats and was put in segregation in Belmarsh jail.

The serial killer's conversion has also been attributed to him allegedly searching for protection from the fearsome Muslim Boys Gang who look after anyone they convert.

The source added: “Bellfield knows he is under threat and it is believed he is taking steps to protect himself. He has been seen chatting with key members of the Muslim Boys Gang. Before his latest trial he never associated with them."

Bellfield's conversion is "completely fake" according to those who know him.

Jo Collings, his second wife, accused him of being gay and said his mum took him pork scratchings to eat.

The killer's sister Ann-Marie Bellfield also said: "He found out a paedophile had been slashed in Wakefield and thought he would be next: he was a marked man after he was convicted.

"He said they were good boys and would look after him ... he got friendly with Islamic guys and didn’t have a problem."

In 2010 Dame Anne Owers published a report entitled Muslim Prisoners' Experiences which suggested prisoners see benefits in converting to Islam, such as more time out of their cell, and better food during Ramadan.

The report claimed the reasons given by inmates for switching to Islam was the opportunity of "support and protection in a group with a powerful identity" and "perceptions of material advantages of identifying as Muslim".

Now, the Prime Minister has announced reforms for the failing prison service, including the possibility of segregating convicted terrorists for the duration of their sentence.

It is hoped this will stop the radicalisation of vulnerable inmates who have already converted to Islam.

Ministers in Britain could soon consider opening a prison to house convicted jihadis in the UK to stop them radicalising other prisoners, it has been claimed.

The jail, dubbed the 'British Alcatraz' could hold 131 people convicted of terror offences and has reportedly been backed by a review commissioned by Justice Secretary Michael Gove, yet to be published.

The move will be an effort to stop other prisoners being radicalised.

But Jonathan Russell, head of policy at counter-extremism think tank Quilliam, said: "If our prisons are going to be filled with more terrorism offenders, then I think they will also get even more full with radicalised individuals.

"There is a significant danger that our prisons will become net exporters of extremism, when, surely, if we are arresting terrorists, they should be net reducers.

"And if we don’t get it right, the very real danger is that when people come out they will be further radicalised and further hardened to commit violence."

David Cameron said he will "not stand by" and allow inmates to push their views in prisons, in a speech about reforms yesterday.

He said: "And I want to be clear: I am prepared to consider major changes: from the imams we allow to preach in prison to changing the locations and methods for dealing with prisoners convicted of terrorism offences, if that is what is required."

A Ministry of Justice (MoJ) spokesman categorically denied any concrete plans to create such a prison, claiming that it does not form any part of reviews or discussions on reform.

They also said it was "totally untrue" that prisoners of certain faiths receive preferential care.

He said: "All prisoners are treated equally, and it is totally untrue to suggest certain faiths receive preferential care.

“There are also absolutely no plans for a single prison for terrorist prisoners. This is not under discussion and does not form part of any review.”

The MoJ also said there was “no reliable data” for calculating how many prisoners had converted to Islam.

In Britse islam-enclaves denkt men dat het VK een islamitisch land is

Sommige moslims in Groot-Brittannië leven dermate afgezonderd van de rest van de samenleving dat ze denken dat ze in een islamistisch land leven waar de meerderheid van de mensen hun geloof delen.

Dat staat te lezen in een rapport dat volgende week zal worden gepubliceerd en door de Sunday Times kon worden ingekeken. Het werd opgesteld door Dame Louise Casey, de ‘socialecohesie-tsaar’ van de regering.

Uit de verzamelde informatie moet blijken dat sommige moslims totaal van de rest van Groot-Brittannië zijn afgezonderd en in islamitische woonwijken leven, waar ze naar islamitische scholen gaan en naar islamitische tv-zenders kijken.

Het rapport maakt gewag van ‘duizenden mensen die in moslimenclaves leven in het Noorden van het land in steden als Bradford, Dewsbury en Blackburn, zelden of nooit uit die zone komen en geen idee hebben van wat zich buiten hun wereld afspeelt.’

‘Sommige moslims, die deel uitmaken van deze gemeenschappen en naar moslimscholen gaan, denken dat Groot-Brittannië een moslimland is. Ze denken dat driekwart van het land moslim is,’ staat er te lezen.

Volgens de laatste volkstelling in 2011 zou 4,8% van de bevolking in Engeland en Wales moslim zijn, terwijl 59,3% als christelijk staat geregistreerd.

Het rapport wordt een bittere pil voor de regering May, omdat die zal moeten toegeven dat de regering geen serieuze integratiestrategie heeft, zeggen de mensen die aan het rapport meeschreven.

Sir Michael Wilshaw, de chef inspecteur van de Britse scholen die straks met pensioen gaat, waarschuwt voor zo’n 500 scholen in het land die 100% blank of 100% etnische minderheid zijn en waar leerlingen het risico op uitsluiting en radicalisering lopen.

Wilshaw toont zich vooral bezorgd over een cluster van 21 scholen in in Birmingham — voornamelijk lagere scholen met overwegend moslimleerlingen – waar geen blanke leerlingen zijn.

Wat is het woord van ont-integreren? Dat de integratie niet vooruitgaat of stilstaat, maar *achteruitgaat*? Waar leidt dit toe volgens hen in de toekomst? Gewoon totaal parallelle samenlevingen in hetzelfde land?

Ik denk niet dat er nog een strategie kan zijn. Wie het continu vertikt om de taal en cultuur van het land waarin ie woont te leren en erin mee te doen zal het ook niet doen tenzij je selectief extreem gaat korten in uitkeringen en subsidies...

Prins Charles bij de opening van de orthodoxe kathedraal in Londen. En wie waren er niet bij? De Drie Wijzen uit het Oosten.

De drie aartsbisschoppen uit de regio’s rond de Iraakse stad Mosul en de Syrische stad Homs, Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, Timothius Mousa Shamani en Selwanos Boutros Alnemeh, waren uitgenodigd door de Syrisch-Orthodoxe Kerk in Engeland. Aanleiding was de inwijding van de eerste Syrisch-orthodoxe kathedraal in het land, vorige maand. Bij de inwijding van St Thomas Cathedral (in het district Exeter) was prins Charles eregast en werd een persoonlijke brief van koningin Elizabeth voorgelezen.

De drie mochten Engeland niet in. Waarom? Soms omdat ze geen aanhang meer hebben bijna (is uitgemoord)? Nee, omdat ze armoezaaiers zijn die waarschijnlijk zullen blijven en dan profiteren van de sociale voorzieningen.

De drie aartsbisschoppen uit het Midden-Oosten waren echter niet welkom in Engeland. Als reden voor het weigeren van een visum werd opgegeven dat ze geen geld genoeg hebben om hun verblijf te bekostigen. Ook leefde de vrees dat ze Engeland niet meer zouden verlaten. Het ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken zou de drie geestelijk leiders cynisch te verstaan hebben gegeven dat „er voor hen geen plaats was in de herberg.”

Commentaren:

De Syrisch-orthodoxe aartsbisschop in Engeland, Athanasius Toma Dawod, zegt niet te begrijpen waarom de drie geestelijk leiders niet welkom zijn. „Deze mannen hebben grote pastorale verantwoordelijkheden voor christenen in gebieden die worden bevrijd uit handen van IS. Kevin Crehan, 35, was halfway through a one-year prison sentence he received in July after admitting the racially-motivated attack on the Jamia Mosque in Bristol earlier this year.

He was accompanied by Alison Bennett, 46, and Mark Bennett, 48, and Angelina Swales, 31, who also pleaded guilty over the incident.
