SARAJEVO (ANP) - Radicale Bosnische moslims hebben zondag met een bomauto een aanslag gepleegd op een politiebureau in de West-Bosnische stad Bugojno. Media in heel ex-Joegoslavië meldden zondag dat daarbij een politieagent om het leven is gekomen.

De hoofddader, Haris Causevic, gooide een handgranaat naar agenten die hem wilden arresteren. Daarbij raakten nog eens zes agenten gewond. Het politiebureau werd door de aanslag volledig verwoest. Voor Bugojno en omgeving is de noodtoestand afgeroepen.

Causevic hangt een radicale islamitische stroming aan die zich de Wahabia noemt. Veel gebruiken uit de tegenwoordige islamitische praktijk wijzen zij af. De groep rond Haris Causevic verzet zich met name tegen een islamitisch pelgrimfeest dat dezer dagen zoals elke zomer in Ajvatovica bij Bugojno wordt gehouden en dat door de politie wordt beveiligd.

Uit angst, of uit politieke en economische berekening, bedrijven zij een politiek van appeasement tegenover de islam, terwijl de angsten van de eigen bevolking uit het politiek debat weggedraaid worden. Enkel in het kader van een schijnheilig integratiediscours duiken deze bezwaren in vermomde vorm weer op. Iedere politicus die het waagt om zulke zaken openlijk ter discussie te stellen, wordt onmiddellijk populisme en stemmingmakerij voor de voeten geworpen. Tegen de betroffenen zal een klacht van de Grünen, wegens opruiing van het volk, meestal niet lang op zich laten wachten. En zo is de muilkorf sneller in gereedheid gebracht dan gelijk welk tegenargument. Wat is daarvan het gevolg? Het volk zelf raakt opgehitst, en de angst voor de islam slaat om in ressentiment.

Heb ik het nu al te erg mis, of krijgen populistische partijen in Europa veel meer stemmen en macht, ondanks de muilkorven en cordon sanitaires?

Ik hoop het maar. Misschien houdt het de islamisering wat tegen.

We hebben als beste voorbeeld (denk ik) het referendum over de europese grondwet.
De pluchekonten bepalen wat "het gepeupel" te slikken heeft.

Er komt een EU-wijde regeling voor de labeling van voedsel als 'halal'.
Maar voor zover bekend slaat het op onverdoofd slachten. Dus niet of dat beest stuiptrekt ter glorie van Allah omdat er een Koran tekst werd gedeclameerd .
Daarmee schiet het label zijn doel voorbij en zullen er dus allerlei halal-certificeringen in gebruik blijven.
In Islamitische kringen zijn ze tegen een halal-kenmerk door ongelovigen gegeven.
Ook de Joden worden er weer bij gehaald ter motivatie.

MEPs vote for compulsory halal and kosher labels 23 June, 2010
Meat from slaughter without stunning will now be labelled as such following a vote in the European Parliament.

The rule change will affect UK halal and kosher meat suppliers where MEPs decided that meat from non-stunned animals will now have to be mentioned on the label.

MEPs voted by 559 to 54 for the compulsory measure where the regulation would alert consumers to supplies entering the food system. Both Veterinary bodies and halal meat industry insiders have welcomed the decision on clearer labelling but with some misgivings.

Halal consumer group behalal spokesperson Ruksana Mumtaz said: “We welcome labelling as it assists the consumer but we’re concerned that this is yet another attack on the Muslim and Jewish religious practises.
“Both faiths require that the slaughter is humanly carried out to cause minimum distress and suffering to the animal. If the EU and others are genuinely concerned about animal welfare then labelling should be consistently applied to show all types of slaughter methods to allow the consumer to make an informed choice.”

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has welcomed the vote for which it believes all animals should be effectively stunned before slaughter.
Professor Bill Reilly, BVA president, said: “This is a huge step forward in improving the welfare of animals at slaughter. The more consumers understand these issues, the more consumer power can make a difference.”
“Currently there are too many different labels that mean different things, which can be confusing for shoppers. One higher welfare label would go a long way to improving consumer choice and animal welfare.”

Eblex Steering Group member Naved Syed added: "This this the first time Brussels has made common sense and made a decision that is agreeable to me. Clearer labelling is giving the Muslim community a choice. With product labelled correctly, both community and business can move forward and the labelling will mean animal welfare is paramount which is important in the Muslim community."

Ik vraag me af of er echt een complot bestaat. Het is volgens mij vooral de imbeciele mentaliteit van de Europese (linkse) elite die zijn cultuur minacht! Dit verdient navolging. Sporters, politici en televisiemensen die publiekelijk verklaren slecht te zijn geweest, om vervolgens van het journaille te horen te krijgen dat het nog slechter kon.

De publieke biecht zou niet alleen moeten plaatsvinden als er slecht werk is afgeleverd; ik hoop ook op confessies van ethische aard.

De heer Rutte zou bijvoorbeeld op televisie kunnen proberen oprecht de beginregels van Dostojevski’s Aantekeningen uit het ondergrondse te citeren: ‘Ik ben een ziek man... Ik ben een slecht man.’

Nu wij overspoeld worden door manifestaties van eigenliefde – en nationalisme is een tamelijk kwaadaardige vorm van eigenliefde – moeten wij de zelfhaat ook eens vrij spel geven.

Een soort korte stukjes op de voorkant van de Volkskrant. En ik ben, eerlijk gezegd, geen deskundige op het gebied van het zionisme en de staatsvorming van Israël (de kwestie interesseert me niet erg, alebei gedragen ze zich als kleuters), maar het lijkt me dat hij hier ongelijk heeft en dat Israël zich wel degelijk zorgen moet maken. Wat denkt hij in vredesnaam dat Iran wil?

Noam Chomsky is een Amerikaanse linguïst met politieke opvattingen die in sommige kringen voor radicaal doorgaan. Hij is zeer kritisch over bijvoorbeeld het imperialistische wezen van Amerika en Israël. Chomsky wordt niet overal meer serieus genomen, maar iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in journalistiek zou zijn Manufacturing Consent eens moeten lezen.

Een paar dagen geleden zou Chomsky een toespraak houden op de Birzeit Universiteit, vlak bij Ramallah.

Op de Allenby brug, die de Westelijke Jordaanoever met Jordanië verbindt, werd hij tegengehouden door de Israëlische autoriteiten.

Niet zo lang daarvoor hadden die een beroemde Spaanse clown om veiligheidsredenen teruggestuurd.

De grootste bedreiging voor Israël is dat het land volledig verandert in een politiestaat. Elke staat heeft net als elke maffiafamilie aanleg voor achtervolgingswaanzin.

Wil die staat fatsoenlijk blijven, moet de achtervolgingswaanzin met man en macht bestreden worden.

Terwijl ik van Europa naar Amerika vloog, vroeg ik me af wat mensen met Pinksteren doen.Een vriendin van me was verbrand op een terras.

Een andere vriendin was gaan zwemmen met een groepje onbekenden dat ze in een café had ontmoet.

Ik had mijn moeder gebeld, die had gezegd: ‘Waarom kun je niet op één plaats blijven?’

‘Ik moet de plant water geven’, antwoordde ik.

Thuis begreep ik wat mensen met Pinksteren deden, ze bekeken het lijsttrekkersdebat.

Het was weer over immigratie gegaan.

Ik zou willen dat Nederland me ’s nachts wakker hield. Maar denkend aan Nederland word ik in slaap gewiegd.

Immigratie is de meest effectieve vorm van armoedebestrijding.

Wie tegen immigratie is, is eigenlijk tegen armoedebestrijding.

Dat is een respectabel standpunt, maar kom er dan eerlijk voor uit dat Gerard Reves adagium het jouwe is: ‘Arme mensen zijn slechte mensen, anders zouden ze niet arm zijn.’

Dit vind ik zelfs zo onzinnig dat ik me afvraag of hij hier serieus is. Weet iemand dat?

Het is een illusie te denken dat ons land kan beslissen wie we op het grondgebied toelaten. Dat wordt meer en meer een EU zaak. Zo zullen wij gewoon een quotum vluchtelingen krijgen die we niet meer kwijt kunnen.
En om dat zielige gedoe met bootvluchtelingen te stoppen gaat de EU ze zelf ophalen.

Het Europees parlement heeft op 18 mei de oprichting van een Europees ondersteuningsbureau voor asielzaken goedgekeurd, alsook een Europees vluchtelingenfonds voor de periode 2008-2013, en de invoering van een gemeenschappelijk hervestigingsprogramma.

Dat laatste gebeurde via een verslag van de Portugese communist Rui Tavares, waarin gesteld wordt dat de EU meer inspanningen moet doen om vluchtelingen die buiten landen van de EU verblijven, actief te gaan ophalen en door middel van 'hervestiging' naar de EU te brengen.

Er wordt ook nog aan toegevoegd, dat deze nieuw op te halen vluchtelingen 'onmiddellijk toegang moeten krijgen tot medische en psychologische zorg'. Dat betekent dat de toevloed aan nieuwe vreemdelingen die nu reeds onze OCMW's materieel en financieel zwaar onder druk zetten, volgens het Europees parlement nog moet toenemen.

Opmerkelijk is dat N-VA-parlementslid Frieda Brepoels dit linkse pro-immigratieverslag mee goedkeurde, samen met de extreem-linkse fractie van de Groenen waarin de N-VA zetelt.

'Inzake immigratie meet de N-VA zich in eigen land dus een vals 'rechts' jasje aan, maar in het verre Straatsburg steunt ze enthousiast een feitelijk open-grenzenbeleid', aldus VB-Europarlementslid Philip Claeys.

Aldus werd de zoveelste stap naar een gemeenschappelijk Europees asielbeleid gezet, en men moet geen helderziende zijn om te beseffen dat zo'n gemeenschappelijk beleid zal leiden tot een nog grotere toename van het aantal vluchtelingen in Europa. De EU trekt steeds meer het asiel- en immigratiebeleid naar zich toe. Naast de economische immigratie en het gemeenschappelijke asielbeleid is er evenwel geen sprake van een daadwerkelijk terugkeerbeleid.

'Het Vlaams Belang zal zich actief blijven verzetten tegen dit eenzijdige pro-immigratiebeleid dat tegen de wil van de publieke opinie in wordt opgedrongen aan de lidstaten', aldus nog Philip Claeys.

Grunberg is een complete dwaas! Ik lees soms zijn stukjes in 'Wordt vervolgd', het blad van Amnesty International. Hij vindt bijvoorbeeld dat identiteit maar leidt tot conflicten en vindt dus kennelijk ook dat Europa geen identiteit meer moet bezitten want dat maakt moslims maar boos. Grunberg is dus kennelijk een identiteitsloze man; een lege man! Typerend voor een partij als D666 en onze milslukte intellectuele elite.

One day Turkey will run the EU
Turkey isn’t even a member yet, but deputy prime minister Ali Babacan is already demanding a leading role in Europe for his country. All you have to do is look at Turkey's economic and demographic growth to see it's likely to get what it wants, says Die Presse

"When Turkey becomes a member of the EU, it is not going to be in a secondary position, that's one of the reasons why countries like Germany and France are quite nervous about our membership," Turkish vice-premier Ali Babacan declared at a World Leadership Forum in New York during the recent UN plenary session.

And Turkey’s claim to a leading role in the EU is based on hard facts. With economic growth set to hit 7% this year, near-inexhaustible human resources, and mounting clout as a hub of international oil and gas pipelines, Turkey has recently moved into the European fast lane.

At present, Turkey is the 17th biggest economy in the world. Experts predict that in 20 years it will make the top ten, outstripping countries like Spain and Italy. According to forecasts by the IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) and the Vienna Institute of Demography, the Turkish population will be around 85.5 million by then – surpassing Germany, now the most populous nation in the EU.

If Turkey were to be admitted into the EU despite resistance from countries like Austria, Germany and France, it would dominate policy in the EU institutions. Even as things are today, Turkey would be the second biggest political force in the European Parliament and on an equal footing with the heavyweights on the EU Council.

Although the EU power structure will have to be gradually adjusted under the rules of the Lisbon Treaty, not much would change for Turkey. By dint of its rapid demographic growth, Ankara’s influence would actually increase, since the number of seats in Parliament and the new representation ratios in the Council will essentially be based on population size.

Given its size, Turkey could not only push EU decisions through with ease, it would also be able to block those that are not to its liking. The Lisbon Treaty provides that as of 2014, countries whose combined populations exceed 35% of the EU population may constitute a blocking minority. That means Ankara could join forces with, say, London, Madrid and Warsaw to thwart any step backed by Paris and Berlin – which would jam the prevailing German-French axis.

What would change politically in the event of Turkish accession? With Turkey on board, European diplomats say, EU foreign and security policy would be even more heavily US-geared. In matters of commerce, Ankara would probably favour free trade more than the EU members do now. Ankara would, in all likelihood, get behind efforts to cooperate more closely on internal security – even while downplaying certain civil rights such as the protection of private data.

Babacan argued in New York that letting Turkey in would boost the EU’s standing on the world scene. “The weight of the European economy in the world has shrunk and will continue to shrink. And only with enlargement will the EU be able to protect its power and influence."

An opinion seconded by Gerhard Schröder in Die Welt’s online edition. “Without Turkey the EU will sink into mediocrity,” writes the Social Democrat ex-chancellor, pointing to the rapid pace of growth there: this year alone the Turkish economy will grow four times as much as the French and twice as much as the German economy. Schröder expects Turkey to be the fourth or fifth biggest European economy in 20 years. Then there will be no ignoring it.

Paris - Four in 10 French and German people see Muslims living in their country as a "threat", according to a poll published on Tuesday by French newspaper Le Monde.

Forty-two percent of French people and 40% of Germans questioned by pollster Ifop said they considered the presence of a Muslim community in their country "a threat" to their national identity, Le Monde said.

The findings of the study "go beyond linking immigration with security or immigration with unemployment, to linking Islam with a threat to identity", said Jerome Fourquet of Ifop, quoted by Le Monde.

Of the sample of people questioned for the survey in early December, 68% in France and 75% in Germany said they considered Muslims "not well integrated in society".
Out of these, 61% of French and 67% of Germans blamed this perceived failure on "refusal" by Muslims to integrate.

Onheilspellend nieuws van Mark Steyn over Europa. Europa gaat volgens hem verdwijnen door de demografische groei van de Islam. Heel treffend geeft hij aan dat de oorzaak van al deze ellende de minachting van de Europese elite is voor de eigen culturele Europese identiteit. Lazen we onlangs ook niet dat de EU agenda's geschonken had waar geen christelijke feestdagen meer in waren, maar wel islamitische en andere? Ook Ayaan Hirsi Ali heeft het over een Europa zonder identiteit.

Bij die minachting voor de eigen Europese cultuur moet ik ook denken aan het gezwam over extreemrechts van o.a. Jaap Donselaar. Extreemrechts ben je volgens hem wanneer je teveel gehecht bent aan eigene (d.w.z. de eigen CULTUUR in pedante bewoordingen), waardoor je een afkeer krijgt van het vreemde (d.w.z. de Islam). Vreemdelingenhaat dus! Dat er ook een heel andere reden bestaat waarom mensen tegen de Islam zijn (bedreiging voor onze vrijheid) gaat hem kennelijk boven de pet. Maar de onderliggende boodschap van de ideologie van Jaap Donselaar is natuurlijk duidelijk: je mag niet teveel aan je eigen cultuur gehecht zijn. Je mag er dus niet teveel van houden, want dan krijg je maar een afkeer van andere culturen en dat is verwerpelijk. Dat is 'extreemrechts'! :yuk:

Europe's Muslim Lobby

Europeans often fantasize about America's so-called Jewish lobby, which they claim has a chokehold over American finance, media and politics and is responsible for all manner of conspiratorial evil. But few Europeans like to talk about the growing influence of Europe's Muslim lobby, a conglomeration of hundreds of Muslim political and religious organizations -- many of which are media-savvy mouthpieces for militant Islam that openly pursue anti-European, anti-Western and anti-Semitic agendas and often receive financial support from Islamic fundamentalist countries like Saudi Arabia.

In a Europe where Islam is the fastest-growing religion, and where the number of Muslims has tripled over the past 30 years, Europe's Muslim lobby is becoming increasingly assertive and skilled at pressuring European policy-makers into implementing countless pro-Islamic policies, especially ones that institutionalize Islamic Sharia law. Muslim lobby groups are, in fact, transforming European society in ways unimaginable only a few years ago; critics say their ultimate goal is nothing less than the Islamification of Europe.

Some of the most effective Muslim lobby groups are located in Britain, home to one of the largest Muslim communities in Europe, and include organizations such as the Muslim Council of Britain [MCB], Britain's largest Muslim umbrella body with around 500 affiliated national, regional and local organizations, mosques, charities and schools. It recently pressured the British government into adopting Islamic law and giving Sharia courts full powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.

The British government has quietly sanctioned the powers for Sharia judges to rule on cases ranging from divorce and financial disputes to those involving domestic violence. Whereas previously, the rulings of Sharia courts in Britain could not be enforced, and depended on voluntary compliance among Muslims, rulings issued by a network of five Sharia courts are now enforceable with the full power of the judicial system, through the county courts or High Court. Sharia courts with these powers have been set up in Birmingham, Bradford, London and Manchester and the network's headquarters are located in Nuneaton, Warwickshire; and two more courts are being planned for Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Overall, at least 85 Islamic Sharia courts are now operating in Britain, almost 20 times as many as previously believed. A study by the Civitas think tank found that scores of unofficial tribunals and councils regularly apply Islamic law to resolve domestic, marital and business disputes, many operating in mosques. The study warns of a "creeping" acceptance of Sharia principles in British law.)

Although the MCB, which represents half of the country's 3 million Muslims, presents itself as the moderate face of Islam in Britain, the group has its origins in the extreme orthodox politics of Pakistan. The MCB and some of its affiliates sympathize with, and have links to, conservative Islamist movements in the Muslim world, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood and Pakistan's Jamaat-e-Islami, a radical party committed to the establishment of an Islamic state in Pakistan ruled by Sharia law.

Far from promoting moderate Islam, the MCB's real objective, critics say, is to help Muslims in Britain become more radical in their beliefs.

Among other positions, the MCB believes death is the appropriate penalty for apostasy and homosexuality. The group recently endorsed a pro-Hamas declaration that calls for Jihad against Jews and Israel, and condones attacks on British troops. The MCB also regularly makes headlines for boycotting Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies in Britain; it is also campaigning for the establishment of an alternative Genocide Memorial Day that will "incorporate similar tragedies."

Another Muslim group, the Muslim Public Affairs Committee of the United Kingdom (MPACUK), has the outspoken aim of mobilizing Muslim voters to affect the outcome of British elections. During the general elections in 2010, MPACUK was pivotal in de-seating six members of parliament (MPs) who were perceived as being not sufficiently pro-Muslim.

During the 2005 general elections, MPACUK launched a smear campaign against Labour Party MP Lorna Fitzsimons. MPACUK distributed a leaflet claiming that Fitzsimons had done nothing to help the Palestinians because she was Jewish. Another leaflet said: "Lorna Fitzsimons is an ardent Zionist and a member of the most powerful anti-Muslim lobby in the world, the Israel lobby."

Fitzsimons is not in fact Jewish, and MPACUK later withdrew the leaflet. But MPACUK did succeed in unseating Fitzsimons; ever since then, many British MPs have been bending over backwards to appease Muslim voters.

MPACUK recently worked with Britain's Channel 4 television to produce a documentary titled "Operation Muslim Vote." With the aim of pressing for a larger participation of Muslims in British politics, the documentary tells the story of two MPACUK activists who head to northern England to take on the safe seats of several "pro-Zionist war mongering MPs."

MPACUK's website says its work is defined by the core principle of anti-Zionism: "MPACUK opposes the racist political ideology of Zionism and aims to counter the influence of the Zionist lobby. Openly available evidence demonstrates a Zionist agenda to dominate the Middle East and push a 'clash of civilisations' between Islam and 'The West'. We therefore believe that anti-Zionism is a strategic priority to counter the greatest and most urgent threat facing the Ummah [the Muslim Diaspora]."

Its website also says Muslims in Britain should be pro-actively engaged in mainstream media and politics as the most effective way to "reviving the fard (obligation) of Jihad."

Muslim lobby groups have also pressed the British government to enact the Racial and Religious Hatred Act, which creates a new crime: intentionally stirring up religious hatred against people on religious grounds. Predictably, the new law has established new limits on free speech in a country where the politically correct elite routinely seek to silence public discussion about the escalating problem of Muslim immigration.

The growing power of Europe's Muslim lobby was most recently demonstrated by the European Union's decision in mid-December to quietly abandon a new measure that would have required halal (religiously approved for Muslims) meat products to carry a label to help non-Muslim consumers identify their origins. With the exponential growth of Europe's Muslim population, thousands of tons of religiously slaughtered halal meat is now entering the general food chain, where it is being unwittingly consumed by the non-Muslim population.

By bowing to Muslim pressure groups -- such as the World Halal Forum Europe and the Halal Monitoring Committee -- and dropping the halal labelling requirement, the EU is effectively establishing Sharia law as normative for Europe's meat industry. The halal controversy, in which Muslim lobby groups are seeking to impose the requirements of Islam, not just on their own people, but also on the rest of society, illustrates how the rise of Islam is influencing the daily lives of hundreds of millions of non-Muslim Europeans.

In France, which has the second-largest Muslim population on the continent after Germany, several Muslim lobby groups are vying to represent the country's estimated 4.1 million Muslims. The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) serves as the official interlocutor with the French state in the regulation of Muslim religious activities, and as such it is the de facto representative of all French Muslims before the national government. The other main Muslim lobby groups are the Rally for French Muslims (RMF),backed by Morocco, and the Union of French Islamic Organisations (UOIF), close to the Muslim Brotherhood.

In Germany, home to Europe's largest Muslim population in absolute terms, the powerful Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DITIB), itself a branch of the Turkish government's religious affairs authority, has succeeded in persuading the city of Cologne to approve the construction of a new mega mosque. The futuristic mosque will hold up to 4,000 worshippers, and will have a large dome and two 55-meter (180 feet) minarets, each as tall as 18-story office towers. The 4,500-square-meter (48,000-square-foot) mosque, which has a price tag of €20 million ($26 million), is being financed by donations from more than 800 Muslim groups inside and outside Germany. Critics of the project say the mosque is a deliberate effort to spoil Cologne's skyline by taking attention away from the city's Gothic cathedral, a globally famous Christian landmark.

In recent months, Muslim lobby groups have also persuaded the German government to adapt Germany's secular education system so that it caters to Islamic preferences. The German Education Ministry has, for example, agreed to fund Islamic studies at several state universities to train Muslim prayer leaders and religion teachers. Germany's Education Minister, Annette Schavan, says: "We want as many imams as possible to be educated in Germany. Imams are bridge builders between their congregations and the communities in which their mosques stand." She states further that Germany would need 2,000 imams and teachers if all 16 states offered Islam courses.

Elsewhere in Germany, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Muslim lobby groups are working with the Culture Ministry to design Islam-friendly classes for public schools. The new guidelines recommend cancelling all school trips during the month of Ramadan; taking into account the sensitivities of Muslims when planning internships and school events; and assigning less schoolwork during Ramadan because fasting could lead to loss of performance and concentration among Muslim students.

In the German state of Lower Saxony, the German Muslim Central Council is urging the Education Ministry to include Islam in its schools' core curriculum as part of a politically correct initiative to counter growing anti-Islam sentiments in the country. In Berlin, the Ministry for Education, Science and Research recently published a guide called "Islam and School," which gives teachers practical advice on how to avoid offending Muslim students.

In Scandinavia, the Muslim Council of Sweden, an umbrella organization of Islamic groups in the country, is pressuring the Swedish government to implement special legislation for Muslims in Sweden. The demands include: the right to specific Islamic holidays; special public financing for the building of mosques; a demand that all divorces between Muslim couples be approved by an Imam; and that Imams should be allowed to teach Islam in public schools.

As Europe's Muslim population grows, Muslim lobby groups are also exerting significant influence on European policy in the Middle East, resulting in a notable hardening of official European attitudes toward Israel. Several European countries, for instance, eager to maintain good relations with local Muslim communities, are laying the political groundwork for the EU to recognize a Palestinian state, possibly as early as October 2011,even if negotiations for a permanent settlement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority are not concluded -- a total abrogation of the UN's signed Oslo accords.

In December 2009, the EU adopted a resolution that for the first time explicitly calls for Jerusalem to become the future capital of a Palestinian state. The move not only reflects the EU's efforts to prejudge the outcome of issues reserved for permanent status negotiations, but in December 2010, an influential group of former EU leaders and officials published a letter urging the EU to implement sanctions against Israel.

Europe has also been "ground zero" for a series of anti-Israel lawsuits which exploit the legal principle of universal jurisdiction in order to harass current and former Israeli political and military leaders, with the twin aims of tying Israel's hands against Palestinian terror and delegitimizing the Jewish state. Such "lawfare" is often aided and abetted by Muslim lobby groups in Europe by means of financial and logistical support.

The steady demonization of Israel by European officialdom is also affecting the European street, where the line between valid criticism of Israel and anti-Semitism is becoming dangerously blurred. A survey conducted by the University of Bielefeld, for example, shows that more than 50% of Germans equate Israel's policies toward the Palestinians with Nazi treatment of the Jews, and that 68% of Germans say that Israel is waging a "war of extermination" against the Palestinian people. In terms of Europe as a whole, an official EU poll shows that the majority of Europeans regard Israel as the greatest threat to world peace.

Another report commissioned by the EU's Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia (now called the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights) found that Muslim immigrants are largely responsible for the sharp increase in anti-Semitic violence in Europe.

Predictably, Muslim lobby groups pressured the EU into preventing that report from being released to the general public.

Here's an inconvenient truth: the Islamisation of Europe

For years the world ignored climate change. As the evidence for man-made environmental disaster built up, the majority of people took part in a passive conspiracy of silence, like there was a nutter in the carriage and no one wanted to acknowledge the fact.

Many did so out of ignorance, others out of bigotry against environmentalists who, they thought, wanted us all to live in huts, or worshipped the earth, or at the very least didn’t use deodorant. Still others purposefully ignored it because they had a vested economic interest in doing so. Some simply couldn’t believe something so awful could happen, some believed it but were fearful of the terrible consequences of acting – economic unrest, war, perhaps mass murder. Still others believed it but thought it was inevitable and so pointless worrying about.

I interviewed a storm chaser back in 2004 for Nuts magazine. I just wanted tales of derring-do, but his tone was so downbeat I wanted to chop my own head off. He was in despair at humanity’s refusal to face this disaster that engulfed us all.

“I hate to say it, I really do, but it will take a catastrophe on American soil, and many dead, before something happens”. I think they took that bit out of the interview – people buy Nuts to think about sex, not death.

But the following summer Hurricane Katrina did happen, and, very quickly, man-made climate change become almost universally accepted. In fact no one talks about anything else.

Climate change denial was, and still is, an overwhelmingly conservative vice, and it’s a historical black mark against the Right (and, ahem, we have a few). But there is a corresponding liberal conspiracy over an issue that is as important to our society, if not to our planet.

Ten or even five years ago few people were prepared to say in public that, whatever the media consensus, mass immigration didn’t in fact benefit our economy, but placed a strain on services, damaged the social fabric of society, and made England more violent and unequal and unhappy, and even threatened our very democracy. Anyone who dared to say so was presented as the sort of man who ran an army surplus shop and collected old SS daggers and empty cans of Zyklon B.

But while sociology is not a hard science, the evidence has been mounting up – and ignored. Some chose to ignore it because of their bigotry against “Colonel Blimps”, “Daily Mail readers” and “racist Little Englanders”. Some – such as the many employees in the enormous race relations industry – had a vested interest in denial. Many others thought it true but that to admit it would unleash man’s worst trait – racial hatred – and result in murder and violence against black and Asian Britons, and their friends and loved ones – British people born here – being shipped off somewhere. Better just to leave London and choose the quiet life or sing the benefits of immigration from your Dorset country home.

No particular event changed broke the taboo – not 7/7, which I think had the opposite effect of showing just how amazing London is as an experiment and how tolerant Londoners are at getting along. The Danish cartoon protests certainly opened a lot of eyes and had unlikely people talking about “Islamicisation”. Most likely there was not any particular event; it was simply that the increasing popularity of blogs broke the mainstream media’s silence on the issue.

But all over Europe people have had their Katrina moment. As the respected American journalist Bruce Bawer writes in this devastating piece, in Norway, Denmark and Holland voters are turning to parties that openly oppose mass immigration. These are ordinary people who work regular jobs and travel abroad and have friends of every race and creed, but who do not want to be a minority in their own country or capital, just as no Indian or Ugandan or Moroccan would want to be a minority in his.

The media tried to paint these parties as racist and fascist. Never mind that Pim Fortuyn’s party was led by an openly gay man and an openly, er, black woman.

What has prompted this rightward shift? Bawer points to several factors. One is the prosaic one of numbers:

One source estimates that Britain’s Muslim population rose from about 82,000 in 1961 to 553,000 in 1981 to 2 million in 2000—a demographic change roughly representative of Western Europe as a whole during that period. According to the London Times, the number of Muslims in the U.K. climbed by half a million between 2004 and 2008 alone—a rate of growth ten times that of the rest of that country’s population.

Secondly, there is the financial impact of a immigration, a taboo within a taboo in Left-wing circles, a sub-taboo.

For while some immigrant groups in Europe, such as Hindus and East Asians, enjoy relatively low unemployment rates and healthy incomes, the largest immigrant group, Muslims, has become such a burden that governments have made extensive cutbacks in public services in order to keep up with welfare payments—closing clinics and emergency rooms, reducing staff in hospitals, cutting police and military spending, eliminating course offerings at public universities, and so on. According to a report issued last year by the think tank Contribuables Associés, immigration reduces France’s economic growth by two-thirds. In 2002, economist Lars Jansson estimated that immigration cost Swedish taxpayers about $27 billion annually and that fully 74 percent of immigrant-group members in Sweden lived off the taxpayers. And in 2006, the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise warned that Norway’s petroleum fund—which contains the massive profits from North Sea oil that have made the nation rich—could wind up drained to cover outlays to immigrants. (This in a country whose roads, as a report last year indicated, are in worse shape than Albania’s.)

But perhaps most importantly is the growing realisation among some European liberals that continued immigration, predominantly from the reactionary Muslim world, is destroying liberalism. One of the most striking signs of this is the collapse of the Rainbow Alliance, so that Bawer (who is himself gay) writes:

Owing to the rise in gay-bashings by Muslim youths, Dutch gays—who ten years ago constituted a reliable left-wing voting bloc—now support conservative parties by a nearly two-to-one margin.

The same could also be said about European Jews, who have traditionally voted for Left-wing parties because of the Right’s bigotry. Last year the Conservatives won the Jewish vote in the London elections, the first time in history that the capital’s Jews had voted for a Right-wing party (it didn’t help that Ken had a fondness for barking mad Islamists and making concentration camp gags to Jewish journalists).

And, as David Goodhart first pointed out in Prospect magazine four years ago, the welfare state and mass immigration are mutually exclusive, or at the very least the welfare state works best in small, homogenous societies. Yet the same people who would want us to be more like Sweden in our social model are pushing our demographics in the direction of vibrant and exciting but also violent and brutally unequal multi-racial countries like the United States, Brazil or South Africa.

First, social-democratic welfare systems work best, to the extent they do work, in ethnically and culturally homogeneous (and preferably small) nations whose citizens, viewing one another as members of an extended family, are loath to exploit government provisions for the needy. Second, the best way to destroy such welfare systems is to take in large numbers of immigrants from poor, oppressive, and corruption-ridden societies, whose rule of the road is to grab everything you can get your hands on. And third, the system will be wiped out even faster if many of those immigrants are fundamentalist Muslims who view bankrupting the West as a contribution to jihad. Add to all this the growing power of an unelected European Union bureaucracy that has encouraged Muslim immigration and taken steps to punish criticism of it—criminalizing “incitement of racism, xenophobia, or hatred against a racial, ethnic, or religious group” in 2007, for example—and you can start to understand why Western Europeans who prize their freedoms are resisting the so-called leadership of their see-no-evil elites.

Don’t expect Polly Toynbee et al to admit this any time soon – the Left is paralysed by its fear of racism, which is why Europe will continue rightwards.

However, while Holland and the Nordic countries have built up a decent, anti-Islamist right, in other countries the void left by mainstream conservatism’s cowardice has been filled with neo-fascists – Austria’s Freedom Party, the Flemish Vlaams Blok and our very own British National Party. If the Conservative Party fails to take up its position as Fortuyn’s heirs, then the vacuum will only get bigger. The space is open for either dissident Conservatives, UKIP or some other non-fascist party to take up that mantle.

I hope they will, for as Bawer warns: “Who will win the war for the soul of Western Europe? The Islamofascists and their multiculturalist appeasers, many of whom seem to believe that their job is not to defend democracy but to help make the transition to sharia as smooth as possible? The nativist cryptofascists? Or Pim Fortuyn’s freedom-loving heirs?”
