Iran blames foreign country for cyberattack on petrol stations

Iran has said a foreign country was behind a cyberattack that paralysed its petrol distribution network on Tuesday.

A group called itself Predatory Sparrow claimed it carried out the hack, but Iran's top internet policy-making body blamed an unnamed "state actor".

President Ebrahim Raisi said the aim was aimed at "stoking public anger".

The attack hit an intranet-based system that lets motorists buy subsidised fuel with government-issued smart cards, causing long queues at petrol stations.

The hackers also hijacked digital billboards on highways in the capital Tehran and elsewhere, making them display a message saying: "[Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei, where is our fuel?"

Only 5% of the country's 4,300 petrol stations had been reconnected by Wednesday morning, a spokeswoman for the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) told state media.
However, almost 3,000 were able to sell fuel "offline" at the unsubsidised price, she added.
Most people depend on subsidised fuel in Iran, whose economy has been badly damaged by years of US sanctions, as well as government mismanagement and corruption.

"Some are aiming to stoke public anger by creating chaos and disrupting people's lives," Mr Raisi told a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The president also claimed that "vigilance" by Iranian authorities had prevented the hackers from taking advantage of the situation.

The secretary of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace, Abolhassan Firuzabadi, said the attack was carried out by a foreign country, but that it was "too early to announce by which country and in which way it was done".

The semi-official Fars news agency meanwhile linked the hack to the second anniversary of the mass protests that erupted across Iran after the government raised the price of petrol by 50%.
The unrest prompted a bloody crackdown by the security forces. Amnesty International said more than 300 people were killed, but Iranian officials dismissed the figure.

In a post on Telegram, Predatory Sparrow said that the hack was a "response to the cyber actions by Tehran's terrorist regime against the people in the region and around the world".
It added that it had warned Iran's emergency services personnel in advance and had chosen not to exploit a vulnerability that would have caused "very long-term damage".
The group also announced that it was behind a cyberattack on Iran's rail network in July, which caused message boards at stations to incorrectly show trains as delayed or cancelled.

Fuel Pipeline Explosion In Southern Iran Sends Flames Into The Sky

An oil and gas pipeline in Iran’s Khuzestan province exploded and caught fire on Wednesday in what the official media said was the result of metal “fatigue”.

While Iran’s Tasnim news agency affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard said an oil pipeline exploded, Images sent by local residents show huge, ferocious flames shooting into the sky, in what seems more likely to have been a gas pipeline fire.

A tweet from the scene by an account tagged as “Iranworkers” also mentions a gas pipeline explosion, the second in less than a month in the same area.

An oil pipeline in Khuzestan province, southwestern Iran, has exploded, apparently because of pipe wear.
The explosion was so massive that it lead to a minor earthquake, according to Iranian media.

Iranian law proposed to ban all pets

A new Iranian law was proposed last month to make owning all pets illegal, but the backlash to it has been fierce.

So far, 75 hardliners have signed onto the bill, agreeing with its reasoning that owning rabbits, cats, dogs and the like is a “destructive social problem” that could lead eventually to a change in the Iranian-Muslim lifestyle “by exchanging people and family ties for feelings and emotional relationships with animals.

The actual wording of the law lumps together animals that truly belong in the wild with those that are time-honored pets, naming “crocodiles, turtles, snakes, lizards, cats, mice, rabbits, dogs and other unclean animals like monkeys.”

The prohibition includes “importing, caring for, assisting with breeding, breeding, buying or selling, moving, transporting or walking and keeping” these “wild, exotic, harmful and dangerous animals at home.”

Some of the penalties included in the legislation: The fine for violation of the law can be up to 30 times the minimum wage; the animal would be confiscated; and if police stop a car with a pet in the back, the vehicle would be impounded for three months. Moreover, people owning dogs (or cats) would not be able to rent a home.

Police tried banning dogs from public spaces in Tehran in July, reportedly without much success. RadioFreeEurope reported that month that Iranian chief prosecutor Mohammad Jafar Montazeri said that loving dogs is part of the “degenerate culture of the West,” and “should not be part of Muslims’ lives.”

The mocking reaction in social media throws doubt on whether the law will be upheld even if it does pass.

“How many times have cats tried to devour you that you see them as wild, harmful and dangerous?” one journalist tweeted in reaction to the rationalization for the law.

One woman, quoted in a combined news agency report in Walla, said people wouldn’t obey even if they are afraid of the consequences.

“Why should I imprison [my dog] at home?” she said. “The legislators probably assume that young couples today have no children because they have a pet dog, but that’s stupid. It’s not because of the dogs, but because of the economic situation that does not allow us to have children. Once they banned satellite TV broadcasts, but people kept watching them although with fear and anxiety. People will continue to keep animals at home in order to protect them.”

The Dilemma of Road Traffic Accidents in Iran

Road traffic accidents (RTA) are the third leading cause of death in Iran after coronary
heart disease and stroke.1 Based on reports by the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization, RTA cause more than twenty thousand mortalities as well as eighty thousand major traumas each year in Iran. In 2010 alone, 22,974 Iranians lost their lives because of RTA (63 deaths per day on average). Moreover, 806,922 people had major trauma, and perhaps 4-5 times this number had minor traumas.

Two prominent Iranian scientists mysteriously die within hours of each other

Prominent Iranian scientists involved in country’s UAV and missile programs killed in mysterious car accidents within hours of each other, after a string of killings that some attribute to Israel.

Two prominent Iranian scientists mysteriously died within hours of each other on Sunday, less than a month after at least three other scientists and military officials also died under mysterious circumstances in the country.

Iranian state media Fars reported that the two men, who both had significant roles in Iran’s UAV program, satellite, and ballistic missile programs, died in two separate car accidents.
However, other Iranian media referred to the deceased men as “martyrs,” implying that they were intentionally killed.

Ali Kamani, an officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) air division, was reportedly killed in a vehicular collision in the city of Khomein, southwest of Tehran.
Notably, Tasnim reported that Kamani died while “defending the homeland during the mission.”
The Iranian news outlet did not provide additional details into his mission or the circumstances of his death.

Mohammad Abdous, who was not a member of the IRGC but was a leading aerospace engineer working for Iran’s air force, was said to have been killed in a car crash in the northern Semnan Province. Abdous’ death came just hours after news of Kamani’s car accident was made public.

Last week, Iranian aerospace engineer Dr. Ayoob Entezari died within hours of eating dinner at a social gathering.

While Iranian media initially said he had died of food poisoning, it was clear to most that the actual cause of his death was acute, intentional poisoning.

The Iranian government seemingly confirmed this to Enterzari’s family by presenting them with a certificate of martyrdom for their deceased relative.

In late May, Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, a senior member of the IRGC, was shot to death outside his home in Tehran by assassins on a motorbike.

A week later, another IRGC commander, Col. Ali Esmailzadeh, died after reportedly falling off the roof of his home.

While some analysts attributed that “accident” to Mossad agents, others said he was killed by the Iranian government over suspicion that he had leaked information to Israel that enabled the targeted killing of Khodaei.

Een soort defenestratie dus.
Over dit gebeuren lees ik:
Khodaei’s colleague in Unit 840, the unit in charge of terrorist operations against Israeli and Western targets overseas, was also killed shortly thereafter. Iran International charged that the IRGC had eliminated Esmailzadeh after he provided intelligence leading to the Khodaei’s assassination.

State-affiliated outlets alleged that he had fallen from his roof, either by accident or by suicide. The IRGC did not issue any statement following his death, and his funeral took place under a media blackout in his home province of Hamedan rather than in Tehran, marking a departure of protocol for an officer of his rank.

Iranian ballistic missile site hit by drone attack: report

The Shahid Hemmat facility “is considered one of the most important military industrial complexes in Iran.”

An Iranian ballistic missile facility was hit in a drone strike, sparking a massive explosion on Friday night, according to an Arab media report.

The Kuwaiti tabloid Al Qabas reported on Sunday that the blast took place at the Shahid Hemmat base in western Tehran. The base is an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp research and development site which, according to the paper, “is considered one of the most important military industrial complexes in Iran.”

A source quoted by the paper claimed that the drones that struck the base were apparently launched from roughly 10 km (6.2 miles) away from the IRGC complex. Iranian officials believe that the drones used had been smuggled into the country in pieces and assembled within Iran.

Iran has not yet confirmed the incident.
Iranian Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Amir Hatami visited the Shahid Hemmat facility to assess the damage.

Al Qabas further reported that while the Iranian Air Force was placed on high alert, one of its F-14s crashed at the Isfahan Air Base in central the center of the country. The crash was attributed to engine failure and the pilot and co-pilot safely ejected.

An explosion and fire broke out under mysterious circumstances at the same base in October 2021.

Israel is widely believed to be responsible for a series of attacks on workers in Iran’s military and nuclear programs.

Tensions between Jerusalem and Tehran soared as Israel warned is citizens in Turkey to leave following “concrete” threats by Iran to kill or kidnap Israelis. Channel 12 reported on Saturday that Israeli and Turkish intelligence foiled at least one attack during the weekend and several others in recent days.

Over the past several weeks, two workers in the IRGC Aerospace Force were killed and a senior Quds Force officer was assassinated in broad daylight outside his home in Tehran.

Israel accused the IRGC of smuggling missile components on civilian flights landing in Damascus, prompting an air strike on Damascus International Airport widely attributed to Israel. Israel’s Kan News reported that the smuggled components were intended to convert conventional missiles into precision weapons.

Nepnieuws uit Iran. Hoezo?
Israeli social media users were quick to point out that the name "Asa Flots" would translate to "made a fart," ridiculing the latest Iranian claim of Mossad activity in Iraq.
[...]
The origin of the gassy claim may be from a tweet by Khaled Iskef, a reporter with the Lebanese, pro-Iranian Al-Mayadeen TV, which shared the claim that a Mossad commander had been killed, although he mentioned only the "Ilak Ron" name, without "Asa Flots."

One Twitter user, GiliCharley, responded to Iskef's tweet that "'Ilak Ron' was his operation name. His real name is Asa Flots."
[...]
When another Twitter user congratulated GiliCharley for seemingly gaslighting IntelSky, GiliCharley responded "Gladly, but the real applause should go to our dear hero 'Asaf Lotz' (another pun on the "made a fart" joke) may he rest in peace."
