Deze man krijgt in Pakistan natuurlijk veel respect.

Pakistanis burn US flags at bounty protests
ISLAMABAD (AFP) - Hundreds of Islamist activists hit the streets of Pakistan on Friday, demanding holy war and torching United States (US) flags to condemn a US$10 million (S$12.6 million) bounty slapped on the founder of a terror group.

The Defence Council of Pakistan, an alliance of right-wing, religious and extremist groups, organised the rallies to denounce the US move against Hafiz Saeed, whose Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) group was blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
Protests, albeit with rather a paltry turnout in places, were organised in Islamabad, the neighbouring garrison city of Rawalpindi, the central shrine city of Multan and in Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir.

In Muzaffarabad, around 500 activists shouted 'Al-Jihad, Al-Jihad (holy war)' as they marched on the city and set fire to a US flag in a main square.

Stranded by violence: Over 100 foreigners evacuated from G-B
According to sources, nearly 80 of the foreigners were stranded in Hunza Valley while others in Skardu and Gilgit.
According to sources, a special army task force reached Gilgit from Islamabad on Sunday morning and conducted the operation.
A witness claimed to have seen nearly 100 foreigners in a five star hotel in Gilgit, who were later flown to the federal capital.

Sectarian violence broke out in Gilgit on Tuesday after assailants lobbed a hand grenade at a rally called by the Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat (ASWJ), leaving six people dead and 50 injured.
In retaliation, at least 10 members of the Shia community were killed in Chilas as an enraged mob set alight four buses en route to Skardu and Gilgit via the Karakoram Highway.
Meanwhile, 31 persons being held captive in Nagar Valley for the past five days in retaliation for Chilas killings have still not been recovered despite government’s continued negotiations with the community elders.

90-year-old Pakistan woman suspected in murder of daughter-in-law

LAHORE Pakistan

A Pakistani woman was doused with petrol and burned alive in a dispute with her husband’s family, police said Wednesday, with her 90-year-old mother-in-law among those named as suspects.

Mother-of-one Sobia Bibi, 25, died after she was attacked while watching television in the house she shared with her in-laws, investigating officer Sub-Inspector Muhammad Hussain said.

Hussain said a case had been registered against four people over the March 27 attack in a village in Narowal district, northeast of the eastern city of Lahore, including the victim’s 90-year-old mother-in-law.

Sobia Bibi had a good relationship with her husband, who was working in Karachi at the time of the attack, Hussain said, but had frequently quarreled with his family.

British nurse seized in Quetta: Pakistan police make arrests
Senior Quetta police official Nazir Kurd said they had made progress on tracking down the aid worker's assailants on Friday.
"We have identified the group which is involved in Dale's kidnapping. We arrested some people in this regard," he said. He refused to disclose any more details because of security concerns and declined to speculate on whether Dale was likely to still be in Quetta or not.

Anti-Ahmedi laws: Police act as worship place ‘looks like a mosque’
After receiving a complaint about the place of worship in Sultanpura, Kachhupura, a large contingent of Misri Shah police visited it on Wednesday and told the Ahmedis they had a day to make the place look less like a mosque, failing which a case would be registered against them under the ‘Anti-lslamic Activities of Qadiani Group, Lahori Group and Ahmadis (Prohibition and Punishment) Ordinance’ of 1984.

The policemen etched out the verses at the main gate and entrance to the main hall. They were about to tear down the minarets, about five feet high, at the main gate too, but local Ahmedis convinced them to give them a day to cover them as demolishing them would have damaged the whole structure.[...]
The complainants, who are residents of Ravi Road, about 15 kilometres from the place of worship, said that the building had the Kalma Tayyeba, names of Allah and prayer verses written at the entrance as well as minarets. “They are non-Muslims and should be tried under the law for depicting themselves as Muslims,” read the complaint.

According to 295-B, “whoever wilfully defiles, damages or desecrates a copy of the Holy Quran or of an extract therefrom or uses it in any derogatory manner or for any unlawful purpose shall be punishable with imprisonment for life.”

According to 298-C, “any person of the Qadiani Group or the Lahori Group (who call themselves ‘Ahmedis’ or by any other name), who directly or indirectly, poses as a Muslim, or calls, or refers to, his faith as Islam, or preaches or propagates his faith, or invites others to accept his faith, by words, either spoken or written, or by visible representations, or in any manner whatsoever outrages the religious feelings of Muslims shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to fine.”

Swiss ex-hostages speak of Taliban kidnap ordeal
Two Swiss former hostages who escaped their Taliban captors in March after eight months in a Pakistani tribal zone told a newspaper on Sunday of their ordeal, giving a rare glimpse into the torn region.

As well as providing the first details of their escape, the couple painted a depressing picture of life in captivity, where their guards spent hours watching suicide-attack videos and fantasized about getting blown up by US drones.

Olivier David Och, 32, and Daniela Widmer, 29, were abducted on July 1st while on holiday in Pakistan's southwestern province of Baluchistan. They were returning by road from a trip to India, despite Swiss government warnings about the risk of kidnapping, when they were seized by gunmen.
Spoiler! :
They said they spent months in a "sort of prison" near the market of Miranshah, in North Waziristan.

"For months, we never saw a woman or child, just our four guards," Widmer told Swiss daily newspaper Le Matin. "They seemed really sick, like they were dead inside, and wore explosive belts."

Och, a police officer from Bern, said the army staged a full-on attack the night of November 7th, pummelling Taliban positions with artillery fire and strafing nearby houses from helicopters.

Och and Widmer said their captors began panicking and eventually made the prisoners wear burqas, then took them to a farm belonging to a Taliban member known as Lala.

They stayed on Lala's farm for the rest of their captivity.

"You could hear the drones all the time," Widmer said. "By day, they'd fly high and sounded like lawnmowers. At night, they flew lower and you could hear them rumble."

Conditions on the farm were better and the guards were not as vigilant. The couple stayed with Lala's family, including his wife, step-daughter and six children.

"We ate the same as the family -- unleavened bread, five or six potatoes with oil and salt," said Och, who lost 22 kilograms in captivity.

Every two weeks, they were visited by Lala's boss, who "figured high on the US list of people to kill. He slept in our room near Lala -- the drones could have picked him off at any time," Och said.

This senior Taliban member told them of the state of negotiations and that the Taliban were demanding a ransom of $50 million.

"We knew no one would pay that much," Och told the newspaper.

So they decided to try to escape. They stole two grenades and ran into the night.

"Better to die fighting," Och said. "If they'd followed us we'd have used them."

They wandered lost for hours before finding a Pakistani military checkpoint. They said their ordeal did not end then and they were subjected to "painful episodes" they did not discuss.

At the time of their escape, the events leading up to their sudden freedom were somewhat mysterious, with some observers questioning whether the Swiss government had paid a ransom, a claim Switzerland denied.

Over de polio in Pakistan:
http://www.memri.org/report/en/0/0/0/0/0/0/6355.htm
TV Report: Superstition an Obstacle to Eradication of Polio in Pakistan
  • Reporter: "The struggle to catch up with the rest of the world in fighting polio is ongoing. 60% of all cases of polio recorded in the world last year were in Pakistan. 198 cases were recorded in Pakistan's tribal areas.
  • Reporter: Polio has become a thing of the past in most countries of the world, but it is still widespread in Pakistan. The Pakistani government is striving to eliminate it, despite the obstacles and the lack of means.
  • "The scandal of the U.S. using vaccination to obtain DNA from Bin Laden's children to confirm his presence in the house where he was assassinated last May dealt a blow to the efforts to eradicate tuberculosis. In addition, it reinforced the position of those who claim that political goals and anti-Pakistani conspiracies are behind the vaccination campaigns." […]

Quetta—A mob attacked a police station here on Saturday demanding a man detained for allegedly desecrating the Quran be handed over, leaving one person dead and 19 with gunshot wounds.

Violence erupted after police arrested a “mentally retarded” man said to have burnt pages of the holy book in Kuchlak, about 16 kilometres north of Quetta.
“Angry protesters, mostly Afghan refugees, torched several vehicles and pelted police with stones,” Dashti said.
“Chanting the man should be killed for blasphemy, they later entered the police station and started firing,” he said, adding that a senior police officer narrowly escaped while his police guard was wounded in the shooting. Police fired tear gas shells and opened fire in self defence, Quetta police chief Qazi Wajid said.

The clash left one protester dead and 19 people wounded including eight policemen, he said. “All the wounded people have bullet injuries,” he added.
The protesters said the man deserved death for blasphemy and demanded police hand him over to them, he said.
“The man appeared to be mentally retarded, we have taken him into custody and ordered an investigation,” Wajid said, adding that control had been restored.

Radical Islam blocks polio fight
At the start of the new millennium, the United Nations' health organizations, WHO and UNICEF, were reasonably confident that polio could be eradicated by the end of 2004.

Then came radical Islam, with its suspicions about -- if not downright hatred of -- the United States. Muslim leaders in northern Nigeria announced that they were blocking U.N. immunizations of children because, they believed, the vaccines were laced with HIV and sterilization chemicals: It was all part of a sinister U.S. plot to reduce the Muslim population.
Whether the villagers believed this nonsense was immaterial because the Islamic radicals were prepared to stop the immunizations by force.
The disease spread to southern Nigeria and seven neighboring West African nations, and it has been a slow process to recoup the lost ground.

Now a Pakistani Taliban commander in North Waziristan has banned a polio-inoculation program just days before 161,000 children under age 5 were to be vaccinated. If this ban stands, it is a heartbreaking setback in the drive to eliminate the disease.
The commander, Hafiz Gul Bahadur, said he would allow the program to go forward if the U.S. stops all drone strikes. In a way, holding the children hostage to this crippling disease is a backhanded compliment: It suggests that the U.S. is too humane to allow this to happen and that we care more about Pakistan's children than Taliban leaders do.

Pakistan mob burns man to death for 'blasphemy'
A Pakistani mob has taken a man accused of blasphemy from a police station and burnt him to death, police say.

The man was being held for allegedly burning a copy of the Koran in public. The incident took place on the outskirts of Bahawalpur, in Punjab province.
Witnesses said hundreds of people looked on as he screamed for help.
Pakistan's controversial blasphemy law imposes the death penalty for insulting Islam, but it is rarely carried out.
The area where the lynching took place is home to hundreds of madrassas - religious schools - run by radical Islamist or sectarian groups.

Police said they detained the man after locals complained that he had desecrated the Koran.
But before the allegation could be investigated, thousands of angry people surrounded the police station, police said.
"They were demanding that we kill him in front of them, or they'll take him away and kill him themselves," police inspector Ghulam Mohiuddin told the BBC.
'Hysterical'
After officers unsuccessfully tried to calm the crowd, it attacked the station, as police tried to disperse it with tear gas. Several policemen were wounded in the violence.
The mob put up roadblocks to prevent police reinforcements from reaching the area, officers said.
"We were totally outnumbered. There were too many of them and they were hysterical. Eventually, they succeeded in taking him away," said one.
The man was reportedly beaten and dragged to the spot where he is said to have desecrated the Koran.
The mob then poured petrol on him and set him on fire, according to witnesses.

Police say they are trying to identify the victim, who was said to be mentally unstable.
"The man had no idea what was going on," said an official.
"While he was in our custody, he kept laughing and chanting."
A case has been registered against unknown attackers. No arrests have been made yet.

Pakistani cop kills sister for wearing jeans

LAHORE: A Pakistani policeman in Lahore allegedly shot dead his sister on Friday for wearing jeans, officials said on Saturday. Constable Asad Ali was unhappy with his sister Najma Bibi, 22, for wearing what he considered 'men's clothes', especially jeans.

The siblings often quarrelled over the issue. A few days ago, Ali had warned his sister that he would kill her if she did not stop wearing jeans and trousers. Subsequently, Najma filed a complaint against her brother at the police station in the Shahdara and sought protection. However , the police took no action.

According to the FIR, Ali followed Najma when she left the house on Friday and allegedly fired at her near Shahdara Morr, killing her instantly. Ali managed to escape and police are conducting raids.

Pakistaanse schoolmeisjes verslaan taliban

In totaal deden 265.000 leerlingen examen, inclusief 115.342 meisjes.

LAHORE: Thousands of residents and shopkeepers of Misri Shah Main Market took to the streets against the alleged desecration of the holy Quran on Wednesday.

The residents of Katchupura, Misri Shah, said that two men had a quarrel, during which one of them, Shafiq, got emotional and allegedly tore up the holy book.

This sparked a massive protest, with people coming out of their homes to condemn the act. The protesters burnt tyres and strongly denounced the desecration of the holy Quran. They demanded an independent probe into the incident to bring the culprit to justice. An FIR has been lodged in this regard.
