Earth Can’t Hold Too Many People; SpaceX is in Rush to Colonize Mars

By Anthony Cerullo - May 2, 2016

Earth is running out of space. If humans can somehow escape extinction from natural causes, then they will need to find a backup plan. Many think that backup plan may be to colonize Mars. SpaceX is already trying to do so. Whether the rest of the planet decides to follow them is yet to be known.

EARTH IS SCREWED
There isn’t any question that Earth is screwed. It’s not a matter of if it will become inhabitable, but more so, when. Humans are already destroying it in every possible way and at the moment, climate change seems to be the biggest threat. If (and that’s a might big if) we somehow elude the inevitable outcome of climate change, then Earth will have a bigger problem on its hand. Overpopulation.

TIPPING POINT WILL LEAD TO MARS
Overpopulation will be the result of Earth’s tipping point. At the moment, our population checks in at a cool 7 billion. Observing our planets trend, this number will only increase over time. Estimates say that by the end of the century, human population will be 10 billion. Some may think Earth will grow with us and adapt. Nope. Resources are already running out as is and that won’t magically fix itself. Even if we somehow live the ideal sustainable self, we most likely won’t make it. So what’s the other options? SpaceX might be on to something with Mars.

SPACEX AND RED DRAGON TO THE FUTURE
The latest development with SpaceX is Red Dragon. The company hopes to send this capsule to the surface of Mars by 2018. While these missions won’t be manned, SpaceX is taking the opportunity to test future heavy landings. One problem that NASA has with Mars landings is a heavyweight. It’s difficult to slow down when landing on the surface of Mars due to its thin atmosphere. If SpaceX can master this, then the possibility to bring heavy machinery on the planet become plausible. Heavy machinery means the possibility to construct. From there, humans could eventually be sent up to do so and we have the start of a little colony. The red planet doesn’t seem like the ideal place to live and it’s not. However, humanity doesn’t seem to have much of a choice. If they do, spit it out.

Zinloos, net zoals moslims.

Zie mijn intro.

Mars One being one-way 'is the biggest appeal’: RT talks to prospective candidates

Published time: 4 May, 2016

As the Mars One mission draws ever closer, only 100 candidates remain out of a total of 2,000 who will help us colonize the Red Planet, forsaking their Earthly existence. RT sat down with two of the candidates to get an intimate look into their preparation.

In 2020, Mars One will send two living units, two life support units and a supply unit to the Red Planet, which will await the commencement of the mission in 2025, slated for arrival in 2026.

One hundred explorers, drawn from all walks of life, from Russia, the US, France, Nigeria, Japan and many other countries have been picked out of a much bigger bunch. Rounds 3 and 4 of the selection process will begin in 2016-17 and further reduce the figure. Then, Mars One will select six teams of four – two women and two men on each team. That is when training will begin, although study materials are set to arrive next month already. This should prepare them for the next two phases of testing.

The future Mars colonists will dive headfirst into the unknown – their job being to explore a plethora of scientific research opportunities and means of survival on this highly inhospitable planet.

The question on everyone’s mind was how the volunteers mustered the courage to leave their home planet behind forever. One of the volunteers, ontologist (or, “a kind of data modeler” in his own words) Dan Carey, who is rather modest about his science background in applied physics, gave a simple answer:

“I have always been fascinated with space exploration and learning more about the solar system. Growing up, as I did, in the 60s with the Apollo and the Gemini programs in full swing, it was something that just grabbed my imagination and held on for the rest of my life. I don’t hate Earth. I love Earth, but we are talking Mars here.”

Like Carey, Josh Richards is a kind of jack of all trades, with an applied physics and astrophysics background, which he never really got to use, serving instead as engineer (primarily in explosives) in the Australian and British militaries, who now performs as a standup comedian. He believes his engineering skill set is “handy, but super-handy on Mars”, although, “essentially, where I am working now is trying to bring comedy into space science education”, he jokes.

The Australian says he’s been “bouncing around doing all sorts of weird and wonderful things” in preparation, including spending “five days locked inside a glass and steel box”. This was “all related to the DVD release of The Martian in Australia, and so, I got to play Mark Watney [Matt Damon’s character] for five days”.

There has been a slew of reports from last year alleging that Mars One is all a big hoax, that, among other things, it has no money – no contracts with aerospace suppliers (the ones behind the technology), no publicity or TV people behind it, or any endorsements from major brands.

Thankfully, “a lot of that isn’t entirely correct”, Carey says. “They are pursuing the investments in order to get things going. There are contracts with the people who are doing the initial designs for the life support system, the communication satellite... you have to have those before you get a contract to actually go out and build something.”

“There are things that have to happen in an order, and Mars One is pursuing those things in that order.”

Both candidates remember asking themselves at every stage of selection whether they had it in them to proceed and really commit to their lives of solitude on another planet. Carey believes nothing comes close to making that first important step for humanity, and so believes it’s worth the one-way trip.

Richardson recalls a funny coincidence: he’d first heard of Mars One while writing a comedy routine about sending people on one-way trips to other planets. He remembers centering on his frustration that we’ve got the technology to send someone up there, but not to bring them back.

“So the show that I was looking to write was quite angry: I was sort of frustrated that we as a species hadn’t been brave enough to go out into the solar system. And as part of my research, I found an organization planning to do exactly that,” he says. “So the one-way element is actually the biggest appeal for me.”

School bus turns into Mars shuttle in Lockheed science push

By Daniel Farey-Jones, may 3, 2016

Aerospace and defence company Lockheed Martin found a novel way to cast itself in the role of preparing America's children to walk on Mars.

Last month Lockheed announced a new national education programme, Generation Beyond, designed to inspire children to pursue careers in science.

"Our children [are] the generation that will walk on Mars, explore deep space and unlock mysteries that we can’t yet imagine," said Lockheed’s CEO Marillyn Hewson.

Lockheed commissioned McCann New York to bring the idea to life in a school bus to be used as a shuttle to and from the USA Science and Engineering Festival, which it sponsored, in Washington DC.

McCann partnered with special effects company Framestore, which was Oscar-nominated for The Martian, to create the illusion, through screens on the inside of the windows, that the bus is driving on Mars.

Framestore created a 200-square-mile "worldspace" based on the actual streets of Washington DC and a system that reflected real-world bus speed, GPS and up/down movements.

Amid the Mars terrain riders saw a new model of the rover Curiosity, a space colony, and the Orion capsule - a long-duration vehicle being built by Lockheed. They also got to experience a sandstorm.

BB

One big step towards moon habitation

17 May 2016 at 11:39am by AFP

Establishing a human colony on the Moon and travelling to Mars has been the stuff of dreams since the dawn of the space age.

But these visions face many hurdles. How can humans survive for months or years in the ultra-hostile environment of space? What, for instance, will they eat?

Agricultural researchers at a Dutch university say they are taking the first steps towards providing an answer.

They are growing vegetables in soils similar to those found on the Moon and Mars, looking for ways of helping space pioneers grow their own crops.

“When people go to the Moon and Mars they also have to eat, and it's easiest for them to grow their own food,” said Wieger Wamelink, surrounded by several dozen plants in a special greenhouse at Wageningen, an agricultural university in central Netherlands.

“We wanted to use real Martian and lunar soil,” to see if plants would actually grow in it, Wamelink told AFP.

Of course, getting real lunar and Martian potting soil is an impossible ask. But an Internet search revealed an unlikely supplier: NASA.

The US space agency makes ground similar to that on the Moon from sand found in an Arizona desert, while Mars' crimson “soil” is scooped from a volcano in Hawaii, Wamelink told AFP.

The first experiments started in 2013 after Wageningen received an order of 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of NASA's imitation “space soil” -- at a hefty price of 2,000 euros ($2,285).

Wamelink stuck tomatoes, peas, cress and other plants in pots containing the simulated soil... and crossed his fingers.

To work in this soil “was very special. Nobody, not even NASA, could tell us what would happen,” even just by simply adding water, he said.

The imitation ground at first was a little “reluctant” to absorb water, but soon turned out to be good potting soil.

Like the actor Matt Damon in the science fiction movie “The Martian”, Wamelink watched with amazement as his “space veggies” grew bigger day-by-day.

“Especially in the Martian soil, plants were growing very fast and very good. They even started to flower, something that we never anticipated,” Wamelink said. The 50-day experiment was written up in the science journal PLOS One in August 2014.

An essential question however remains whether these unusual vegetables are safe to eat.

Martian and lunar soil, including NASA's own imitation, may contain heavy metals that are harmless to plants but could prove deadly to humans.

Wamelink has come up with a possible solution.

If analyses show that the vegetables contain arsenic, mercury or iron making them unfit for human consumption, the soil can be purified by growing other plant species such as violets which absorb the poisons.

Wamelink concedes that the experiment has a drawback -- it is being conducted in non-sterile conditions on Earth where only the nutrient quality of the soil is being assessed.

“There's much more to test,” Wamelink admitted.

Extremely cold temperatures -- dropping to minus 62 degrees Celsius (minus 79 Fahrenheit) on Mars -- as well as a lack of oxygen means that lunar or Martian vegetables and fruit could only be grown in a closed and controlled environment.

The facility would have to be pressurised to normal atmospheric conditions on Earth, heated and lit, and protected from cosmic radiation, which damages plant DNA.

That points to a “space greenhouse” -- a type of container, buried underground and kitted out with solar panels and LED lighting. Water should be no problem as it is found as ice on both the Moon and Mars, said Wamelink.

Other questions that need answers include the presence of friendly bacteria to help plant growth and what happens to plants that grow in low gravity.

NASA plans a human trip to Mars within the next 10 to 15 years or so but similar plans are also being pursued by billionaire Elon Musk and the Dutch company Mars One, tentatively aiming to set up human colonies on the Red Planet.

Technology and the know-how to keep astronauts alive on Mars still has a long way to go said Christophe Lasseur, a European Space Agency (ESA) “Life Support” expert, who deals with metabolic aspects of space travel.

Lasseur believed Wamelink's research of growing plants in space soils “is not a priority”.

He said other requirements for space survival like the proper infrastructure to grow similar vegetables in laboratories was far more essential to provide “maximum reliability” for future teams.

“We must regard a plant as a piece of technology and understand exactly what happens to it first. All chemical, microbiological and physiological aspects (of plants in extraterrestrial conditions) needs to be understood and mapped... We cannot take risks.” – AFP

Truth sounds like hate to those who hate truth.

Lockheed Martin joins the space race to Mars

By Dyllan Furness — May 22, 2016

From China to NASA to Elon Musk, it seems everyone has their sights set on Mars exploration. But before we land on the Red Planet, we’ll probably orbit it. At this week’s Humans to Mars summit, Lockheed Martin unveiled its Mars Base Camp concept — an ambitious plan to send a manned space laboratory to orbit Mars by 2028.

If you’re in the “Mars or bust” camp, you’ll notice Lockheed Martin’s proposed date precedes NASA’s goal by at least a couple of years. The space agency did not contract Lockheed to develop the concept, but the aerospace company hopes to convince NASA to adopt its design before the agency sends astronauts in the 2030s. “NASA has [orbiting Mars] in their plan,” Lockheed Martin’s chief technologist for civil space exploration Tony Antonelli told Popular Science. “And we’re coloring in the details.”

Though the Base Camp is shooting for Mars, Lockheed Martin intends to only use proven current technologies to make their mission feasible, safe, and cost-effective. “All of these pieces exist today, they’re not brand new,” Antonelli said. “We’re taking advantage of what we’ve already got.”

Lockheed’s already got a few systems designed to facilitate Mars exploration. For example, Orion is “the world’s only deep-space crew capsule,” the company boasts on its website. The capsule will serve as the mission’s command-and-control center, equipped with communication and navigation technologies to help astronauts remotely explore Mars, as well as enough life support for 1,000 days.

Lockheed is also developing “exploration augmentation modules”, aka space habitats, based on NASA’s data and research into supporting human life in deep space. The habitat provides both a living space and working space, while offering astronauts a place of longterm security. “Basically, the habitat would be located just far enough away that astronauts couldn’t easily turn around and come home when problems arise,” Bill Pratt, Lockeed’s program manager for habitat study said on the company’s website. “That really forces us to operate in a different mindset that’s more akin to a long trip to Mars.”

The initial mission will launch in 2018 without a crew. Five years later, Lockheed plans to send astronauts further into deep space than anyone has travelled — that is, if SpaceX or China haven’t made it there first.

How SpaceX plans to land on Mars in 2018
By Chris Smith on May 31, 2016 at 5:05 PM

Afbeelding

SpaceX successfully landed one of its reusable Falcon 9 rockets on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean last week, marking the company’s third consecutive success. Sending cargo to the International Space Station and then landing the rocket used to transport it is just one step SpaceX is perfecting, as it moves forward with its daring plan to conquer Mars. The company intends to land on the Red Planet as soon as 2018, in order to explore Mars in preparation for a future manned mission to the planet.

SpaceX plans to send the Dragon 2 spacecraft to Mars atop the Falcon Heavy, which is essentially the equivalent of strapping three Falcon 9 boosters together, as Business Insider explains. That amount of power should be sufficient to bring the Dragon 2 to Mars with enough left over to get the Falcon Heavy back to Earth.

Afbeelding

The real challenge is landing the Dragon 2 on the Red Planet once the trip to Mars is completed. Because Mars’s atmosphere isn’t as dense as Earth’s, using parachutes won’t do. That means SpaceX will have to enter hot, withstand the immense heat, and then use thrusters to reposition the capsule and gently touch down on the planet.

Luckily, the Dragon 2 has outer shielding that’ll protect it from temperatures of up to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Even though Mars has an atmosphere that’s 1,000 times thinner than Earth’s, it’ll still generate plenty of heat when the Dragon 2 enters at speeds of over 1,000 miles per hour.

Afbeelding

Four pairs of dual engine setups will make up the SuperDraco thrusters, capable of generating 120,000 pounds of axial thrust, or enough to ensure as much as possible that the Dragon 2 has a smooth landing.

In theory, this particular setup could let humans travel to space, but the Dragon 2 spacecraft is tiny and not capable of housing humans for long journeys into space.

SpaceX to carry humans to Mars by 2024, says Elon Musk
Published time: 2 Jun, 2016 16:48 | Edited time: 2 Jun, 2016 16:50

The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors Elon Musk says he will send a rocket to Mars in 2018 to begin on-site preparations for a human mission that will launch in 2024.

Musk announced his ambitious plans to launch the Dragon version 2 cargo rocket to Mars - first in 2018 and then every 26 months - during an interview at the code conference, Recode, on Wednesday night.

Musk said the Dragon V2 will have the capacity to transport up to seven astronauts to the International Space Station, but it also acts as a “general science delivery platform to anywhere in the solar system.”

“We’re going to send one to Mars in 2018,” he added.

Musk’s space ambition doesn’t end there, though: the PayPal co-founder said if the 2018 mission goes well, the company should be able to launch people to Mars in “probably 2024 with arrival in 2025”, although not aboard the Dragon V2 currently being tested for human spaceflight.

The trip to Mars, Musk says, will take six months, and the Dragon 2 has the interior volume of a large SUV - “that’s a long time to be in a SUV.”

Also, the current Dragon 2 rocket has no way of returning to Earth from Mars, although that aspect of a Martian voyage is not something Musk seems too concerned about.

"If you're going to choose a place to die, then Mars is not a bad choice," he said, going on to reveal his plans to finally enter orbit himself in the next “four or five years”.

Musk is keeping the specifics of his Mars colonization project close to his chest for now, but plans to present the architecture at the International Astronautical congress conference in September.

The race to get men to Mars is well and truly underway.

The Dutch project Mars One has already outlined its plans to establish a human settlement on Mars as “the next giant leap for mankind”, starting with a human journey to the red planet scheduled for 2026.

Meanwhile, NASA’s ‘journey to Mars’ plans involves the first step of sending humans to an asteroid by 2025 before following that successful mission with a human journey to Mars in the 2030s.

The project involves drawing on data gathered from the ISS, satellite exploration and robotic probes on Mars.

The organization has also been carrying out simulated astronaut ‘confinement’ projects to research how humans will behave on board a space craft and adapt to missions of deep space exploration.
