Ray Kurzweil Predicts Machines Will Reach Human-like Intelligence by 2029

Japan proposes wooden cars made of plant-based cellulose nanofibers

By Loz Blain - October 31, 2019

Afbeelding
This Japanese supercar design is made from incredibly strong wood-based cellulose nanofibers - Kankyosho

One-fifth the weight of steel but five times the strength, plant-based cellulose nanofiber (CNF) offers carmakers the opportunity to build strong, lightweight cars while sustainably removing as much as 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) of carbon from the car's life cycle.

We've written before about the extraordinary properties of CNFs, which were last year demonstrated to be stronger than spider silk. Made essentially from wood, but chipped, pulped and boiled in chemicals to remove lignin and hemicellulose, it's a highly condensed, lightweight and incredibly strong material that's also very recyclable.

It can also, as it turns out, be used in manufacturing, where it can be injection molded as a resin-reinforced slurry to form complex shapes – and the Japanese Ministry of the Environment sees it as a potential way for automakers to reduce weight and sustainably reduce their carbon footprint.

A project undertaken in conjunction with Kyoto University has built this rather angular, gull-winged supercar design using a lot of CNF in the bodywork and interior. Called the Nanocellulose Vehicle, or NCV, it's said to reduce weight by around 10 percent compared to a car built from standard materials, and in doing so, it saves about one person's worth of household carbon emissions for a year.

The team is performing repeated tests on the car parts they've built, making sure they'll last over the long term and meet materials specifications for the desired parts. So far, the team says results have been very promising, and a number of automakers including divisions of Toyota, are investigating CNFs to determine whether production can be made cheap enough to include in mass production vehicles.

John Naughton, Sat 2 Nov 2019 16.00 GMT

Last February, OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research group based in San Francisco, announced that it has been training an AI language model called GPT-2, and that it now "generates coherent paragraphs of text, achieves state-of-the-art performance on many language-modelling benchmarks, and performs rudimentary reading comprehension, machine translation, question answering, and summarisation – all without task-specific training".

If true, this would be a big deal. But, said OpenAI, "due to our concerns about malicious applications of the technology, we are not releasing the trained model. As an experiment in responsible disclosure, we are instead releasing a much smaller model for researchers to experiment with, as well as a technical paper."

Given that OpenAI describes itself as a research institute dedicated to "discovering and enacting the path to safe artificial general intelligence", this cautious approach to releasing a potentially powerful and disruptive tool into the wild seemed appropriate. But it appears to have enraged many researchers in the AI field for whom "release early and release often" is a kind of mantra. After all, without full disclosure – of program code, training dataset, neural network weights, etc – how could independent researchers decide whether the claims made by OpenAI about its system were valid? The replicability of experiments is a cornerstone of scientific method, so the fact that some academic fields may be experiencing a "replication crisis" (a large number of studies that prove difficult or impossible to reproduce) is worrying. We don't want the same to happen to AI.

On the other hand, the world is now suffering the consequences of tech companies like Facebook, Google, Twitter, LinkedIn, Uber and co designing algorithms for increasing "user engagement" and releasing them on an unsuspecting world with apparently no thought of their unintended consequences. And we now know that some AI technologies – for example generative adversarial networks – are being used to generate increasingly convincing deepfake videos.

If the row over GPT-2 has had one useful outcome, it is a growing realisation that the AI research community needs to come up with an agreed set of norms about what constitutes responsible publication (and therefore release). At the moment, as Prof Rebecca Crootof points out in an illuminating analysis on the Lawfare blog, there is no agreement about AI researchers' publication obligations. And of all the proliferating "ethical" AI guidelines, only a few entities explicitly acknowledge that there may be times when limited release is appropriate. At the moment, the law has little to say about any of this – so we're currently at the same stage as we were when governments first started thinking about regulating medicinal drugs.

In the case of GPT-2, my hunch is that fears about its pathogenic propensities may be overdone – not because it doesn't work, but because humans have long experience of dealing with print fakery. Ever since Gutenberg, people have been printing falsehoods and purporting to be someone else. But over the centuries, we've developed ways of spotting fakes. Accordingly, machine-generated text poses less of a problem than video deepfakes.

GPT-2's capabilities are undoubtedly impressive, though. In a fascinating essay, I, Language Robot, the neuroscientist and writer Patrick House reports on his experience of working alongside OpenAI's language model – which produces style-matched prose to any written prompt that it's fed.

It was, he recounts, an instructive exercise. "The language robot and I never wrote the same story," he recalls. "It became, eventually, a writing tool, both as a curator to new ideas and a splint for bad ones. When, after a few months, I lost access to it, my brain felt like it had been lesioned. I missed it. I had found myself jumping into its head, asking what it might write as one would a human writing partner, which made me wonder: should I give it the same theory-of-mind, inductive respect as I give to other thinking things? Could I even help but do otherwise?"

The most fascinating part of House's report deals with his idea of asking the robot the same questions that George Plimpton asked Ernest Hemingway in his famous Paris Review interview in 1958. In reply to the question whether it remembered the exact moment when it decided to be a writer, it replied: "I don't remember ever wanting not to be a writer. Writing had always been my way out. My escape. When I was a little kid, my sister was always coming home from school with homework assignments and I knew if I got hers and mine done early I could spend the next day's lunch hour looking at books. It was the first time that I actually thought that being a writer might happen."

And when asked what it did when it got stuck, it replied: "It's hard to say, but I would say that it would be better not to have a muse at all, to do all that writing you think is going to be good without any conscious control over what you do. It's better to be totally in charge of your own actions."

At this point, the reader gets the eerie uncanny valley feeling: this is almost, but not quite, authentic. But the technology is getting there. Why, any day now it'll be writing newspaper columns.

Totalitaire high-tech controle reeds in opbouw in China

‘De Laatste Vraag’: God als A.I. voorgesteld

in Het Complot, 7 november 2019

Afbeelding

AI, Robots, Automation and You

By Larry Boyer | 23 July 2018

Afbeelding

There is rightfully at lot of excitement about the amazing things AI, robots and other forms of automation can do. Whether it’s the simple novelty of artificial intelligence studying the works of Bach and composing a new Bach-like symphony or something more serious like AI diagnosing medical conditions and exoskeletons to help us lift and avoid injury or even walk again, robots and other automation tools continue to capture our attention leaving us wondering, “what’s next?”

It’s a question we’ve both been fascinated by and feared for centuries and across cultures around the world. A third century Chinese text known as the Lei Zi tells of an engineer who impressed King Mu of Zhou with a mechanical human that walked, moved its head and even sang. Liurparnd of Cremona reported of seeing mechanical lions, trees and birds on his visit to Constantinople in 949 CE. In the mid-1500s Juanelo Turriano created a mechanical monk that raised its arms, turned its head, moved its mouth and more all from a wound spring. And there was the Golden Age of Automata from 1848–1914 that saw the rise of small, family owned businesses that used the newly developed mass production techniques to create autonomous toys. Fast forward to today and we have increasingly realistic robots and AI like Sophia®, who became the first robotic citizen of a country, Pepper®, the Jeopardy® winning Watson®, AlphaGo® and many others.

Automation and You
As technology advances, AI and robots are increasingly moving from curiosity and entertainment to practical tools capable of working, analyzing and creating. In the past we’ve seen robots and automation take jobs in manufacturing plants and some office jobs like secretaries, phone operators and stenographers. But today we’re seeing AI make in roads in claims processing, analytics, paralegals, lawyers, sales and marketing and more. Areas where higher levels of education and skills are needed.

AI is capable of ingesting vast volumes of data, recognizing patterns and making decisions all at a scale beyond human abilities. Of course, there is a lot of discussion at conferences, in the media, academic circles and in the corporate board rooms and government halls. But these discussions focus on a high-level view point — that of “the workforce”, “employees” or even “humans.” As executives, policy makers and academics discuss the broad implications of AI and robots in the workplace, little attention is paid to the specifics — the individual people and what will happen to them.

Aside from burger flipping, how many specific jobs have you heard people talk about robots replacing people? Even then, how many CEOs have you heard tell their workforce — “In one year we will be replacing everyone who flips burgers with a robot. This will open new opportunities in online marketing. If you are interested in this work, here is a training course you can take to start learning this new skill set.”?

You’re On Your Own
With decision makers focused on the big picture, where does that leave you? If you’re lucky, you work for a company that is transparent about the transformations it is undergoing, the opportunities and threats it faces, and where you fit in with all of it. AT&T’s chairman and CEO, Randall Stephenson, made such a push back in 2016.

“There is a need to retool yourself, and you should not expect to stop,” Stephenson said. People who do not spend five to 10 hours a week in online learning “will obsolete themselves with the technology.”(1)

And John Cryan, the now former CEO of Deutsche Bank, said in 2017 “We employ 97,000 people. Most big peers have more like half that number.”(2) There are hints that the new CEO, Christian Sewing, is looking to shed over 10,000 jobs by 2020.(3)

These are just the responses to new technologies forcing the digital transformation. Changes in the economy, shifting political preferences and trade-wars, mergers and acquisitions and even changes in your health can require you to retool and rethink your career as well.

Ultimately the message you hear coming from corporate leaders is “you are in charge of your career.” Perhaps you’ve heard this yourself.

But do you really know how? How do you keep track of trends affecting your job and company? How do you know which direction to take your career? Do you have the time and resources to collect all of this information, analyze it and develop a plan?

Taking Care of the Business of You
Certainly you’ve seen executives are spending considerable resources preparing their companies for transformation. The CEO sets the goals and direction. Information about the market place is collected by sales and marketing teams. New technologies are explored, tested and deployed by the IT teams. Investment spending and costs are managed by the finance functions. The Chief Economist keeps a look out for economic and policy trends. The strategists take in all of the information and make a plan for achieving the CEO’s goals. And operations and the business lines focus on making the transformation happen. What can you learn from all of that?

You’ve probably heard others say something like “You are the CEO of Your Life”. The fact of the matter is CEOs don’t successfully lead their company at any time, let alone through a major transformation, all by themselves. How can you possibly successfully transform yourself for the future of work all by yourself? You need to first recognize you need to be more than the CEO of Your Life and then you need to figure out how to get all of this other work done without getting overwhelmed and busting your budget.

Kunstmatige intelligentie.

Wie is waarmee bezig?

The EU-funded OS for Ind robots project helped develop an artificial intelligence software solution that gives robotic arms human-level skills for various manufacturing tasks.

Robots are a ubiquitous part of the manufacturing process, doing everything from picking parts from bins to the actual assembly of final products. Now, with the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), industrial robots are set to enter a new era of capability and intelligence – ultimately revolutionising manufacturing as we know it.

At the forefront of this effort is Cambrian Intelligence, a company specialising in AI-guided robots for manufacturing. "When retrofitted with the company's AI software solution, a robotic arm gains human-level skills for various manufacturing tasks, such as pick and place, bin picking and cable insertion – to name just a few," says Miika Perä, CEO of Cambrian Intelligence and coordinator of the EU-funded OS for Ind robots project. "This capability not only reduces robot configuration times down to just a single day, it also increases flexibility and cuts costs tenfold."

Bin picking capability

Before manufacturers can leverage the benefits of AI-empowered robots, the software must be available on the market – which is where the OS for Ind robots project comes in. "With the support of EU funding, we were able to increase Cambrian's technology readiness level and identify the best route for bringing the product to market," explains Perä.

A major breakthrough that came out of the project was the development of an AI-based bin picking technology. Bin picking is the ability of a robotic arm to sort through a chaotic arrangement of pieces inside a bin and select the objects needed. With this capability, manufacturers can, for example, have robots bin pick parts and place them in a pre-assembly kit for use further down the assembly line. "With this bin picking technology, many manufacturing tasks can be easily automated," adds Perä.

Perä notes that the challenge with adding enhanced capabilities like bin picking is to make sure the system doesn't become overly complicated: "There is always a battle between adding elements and simplifying things. But we managed to prune the technology in the right way, so it remains both intuitive and manageable."

Market ready

Through the OS for Ind robots project, researchers were able to confirm that Cambrian's AI-based technology performs as expected in real world applications. With the core technology working, the company is now focused on adding such customer-facing features as a user interface and tools to enhance the system's pick and place skills.

"In the future, skills like cable insertions and handling soft materials will be added," says Perä. "We can then automate even more tasks and, as a result, bring some of the manufacturing that has been offshored back to the EU."

With over 2 million industrial robots currently in use, the potential market for Cambrian's AI-based robotic software is vast: estimated at EUR 61 billion globally and backed by double digit growth. Thanks to the advancements made within this EU-funded project, the company is now well-positioned to secure a large portion of this lucrative market.

Telomerase

Zin of onzin?

For anyone questioning the strides being made in the world of autonomous vehicles, meet FLIR Systems. The California tech company has been developing its thermal sensor camera technology to enhance capabilities of self-driving cars.
  • FLIR Systems is showing off its thermal sensor cameras for autonomous vehicles on the streets of downtown Los Angeles during the year's L.A. Auto Show.
  • Thermal sensor cameras have proven to be four times more reliable than other sensor systems at classifying pedestrians.
  • FLIR says the cost of its thermal sensor technology makes it very feasible for self-driving vehicles.
Demonstration drive

Ride actually had an opportunity to experience FLIR's thermal technology during a demo ride at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Widely known for its military applications, thermal sensors focus on heat emanating from objects, which makes the technology more efficient in detecting obstacles on the road across various depths of field. The resolution of the images captured with thermal cameras is much more detailed than radar and lidar systems, especially when it comes to detecting pedestrians.

"Pedestrians all emanate heat. So, you'll see pedestrians in the thermal quite easily, day or night, driving into the sun, in shadows, it doesn't matter," said FLIR Chief Engineer Chris Posch, who conducted our demo. "The thermal will provide you the best sensor at detecting pedestrians and making your car safer."

The technology has proven extremely reliable in the classification of pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles in total darkness at nearly four times the distance of a typical vehicle's headlight range, along with other challenging lighting conditions such as fog, smoke, shadows, inclement weather and sun glare, according to FLIR.

FLIR's thermal sensors are currently being used for driver warning systems for a number of car companies, including General Motors, Volkswagen, Audi, Peugeot, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. But one of the biggest challenges in adopting thermal sensors for autonomous vehicles has been finding a way to make the technology economically feasible for self-driving cars.

"The technology has advanced so much and the cost has come so far down that instead of thousands of dollars for a thermal camera, they are now hundreds of dollars," said Posch. "That's the key. This technology is now affordable for mass market."

As part of its development strategy, FLIR is currently collecting thermal data in a number of major metropolitan areas, with a focus on covering common seasonal driving conditions at all hours of the day. The company's future strategy includes gathering data in several large U.S. and international cities with regional customization to offer accelerated thermal testing.

The overall goal, explains Posch, is to integrate thermal cameras in the overall sensor systems for autonomous vehicle companies, not as a replacement for lidar and radar technology. "All of the sensors have their own importance," he says.

FLIR already has a major self-driving car company looking to adapt the technology for use in their autonomous vehicles and plans to make an official announcement in the near future.

Why this matters

Given that pedestrian detection continues to be one of the primary concerns with autonomous vehicles, FLIR's advanced thermal camera technology is poised to play a pivotal role in helping to push the technology forward. The mass application of thermal sensor technology in the space could potentially anchor the future of self-driving vehicles.

By:  Oliver Morsch, 15.11.2019

Switching light beams quickly is important in many technological applications. Researchers at ETH have now developed an "electro-opto-mechanical" switch for light beams that is considerably smaller and faster than current models. This is relevant for applications such as self-driving cars and optical quantum technologies.

Self-driving cars have become better and more reliable in recent years. Before they might be allowed to drive completely autonomously on our roads in the near future, however, a few hurdles have to be taken. Above all, the need to assess the surroundings at lightning speed and to recognize people and obstacles takes current technologies to its limits. A team of scientists led by Jürg Leuthold at the Institute for Electromagnetic Fields at ETH Zurich, together with colleagues at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the USA and at Chalmers University in Gothenburg (Sweden), has now developed a novel electro-opto-mechanical switch that might be able to elegantly solve both problems in the future.

Plasmonics as a magic ingredient

To achieve this, the researchers used a magic ingredient known as "plasmonics". In this technology, light waves are squeezed into structures that are much smaller than the wavelength of the light – which, according to the laws of optics, should be impossible to do. It can be made possible, however, by guiding the light along the boundary between a metal and a dielectric – a substance, such as air or glass, that hardly conducts electric current.

The electromagnetic waves of the light partially penetrate the metal and cause the electrons inside it to oscillate, which results in a hybrid creature made of a light wave and an electronic excitation – the plasmon. More than ten years ago, some well-known physicists already predicted that optical switches based on plasmons could lead to a revolution in data transmission and data processing, as both can be done much faster with photons than with traditional electronics.

So far, however, real-life commercial applications have failed because of the large losses encountered when transporting photons through plasmonic devices, and because of the high switching voltages needed.

Exploiting the strengths of plasmonics

"We have now solved those problems by exploiting the good properties of plasmonics while minimizing the bad ones", says postdoc Christian Haffner, who led the project and is also first author of the recently published Science paper. The central feature of the electro-opto-mechanical switch developed by Haffner and his colleagues is a gold membrane that is only 40 nanometres thick and a few micrometres wide, and which is separated from a silicon substrate by an aluminium oxide disk.

In this configuration, the size of the gap between the gold membrane and the substrate can be controlled through mechanical forces. When a voltage is applied, the membrane bends slightly and, as a result, the gap becomes smaller.

The size of the gap, in turn, decides whether a light wave simply passes by the gold membrane or is deflected around it. This is where the plasmons come in. In fact, for a certain width of the gap only plasmons having a particular wavelength can be excited on the gold membrane. If the light has a different wavelength, it doesn't couple to the membrane but simply propagates in a straight line inside the silicon waveguide.

Small losses and switching voltage

"Because we only use the plasmons for the short trip around the switching membrane, we have substantially lower losses than those of current electro-optic switches", Haffner explains. "Also, we made the gold membrane very small and thin, so that we can switch it very fast and with a small voltage."

The scientists have already demonstrated that their new switch can be flicked on and off several million times per second with an electric voltage of little more than one volt. This makes the bulky and power-hungry amplifiers typically used for electro-optical switches superfluous. In the future, the scientists plan to improve their switch further by making the gap between gold and silicon smaller still. This will make it possible to significantly reduce both the light losses and the switching voltage.

Applications from cars to quantum technologies

Possible applications for the new switch are plentiful. For instance, LIDAR systems ("Light Detection and Ranging") for self-driving cars, in which the intensity and direction of propagation of light beams needs to be varied extremely quickly, could benefit from the fast and compact switches.

Moreover, the pattern recognition necessary for steering the cars could also be accelerated with such switches. To that end, the switches could be used in optical neural networks that mimic the human brain. There, they would be employed as weighting elements with which the network "learns" to recognize certain objects – practically at the speed of light.

Such optical implementations of circuits that normally work with electric current are also hot topics in other areas. Optical quantum circuits are also intensively studied, for instance, for the realization of quantum technologies (which are taught in the new master's degree course Quantum Engineering recently launched at ETH). Until now, optical quantum circuits have been supported by classical optical switches. Those switches are typically based on a variation in the refractive index of a material when it is heated, which changes the degree to which light beams are bent by it.

However, this is a slow process and, in the long run, incompatible with the low temperatures at which other quantum elements such as the quantum bits or "qubits" of a quantum computer (corresponding to the classical bits that represent "0" and "1") typically work. A fast switch that practically doesn't heat up at all should, therefore, be a welcome addition to such applications, too.

Elon Musk Says Tesla Has a Design for an Electric Submarine—Wait, What?

By Alexander Stoklosa - Jun 13, 2019

Afbeelding

The car company that has yet to consistently turn a profit apparently has its mind on the lucrative world of personal submarine mobility.
  • At the Tesla annual shareholder meeting, CEO Elon Musk made a casual reference to a submarine design that he says the automaker has on hand.
  • Nothing else is known about the would-be personal submarine, other than that Musk says a design for it exists.
  • The revelation was spurred by a shareholder's inquiry into whether or not Tesla has plans for such a vehicle.
Tesla founder Elon Musk often fires off surprising and controversial remarks that leave followers of the electric automaker scratching their heads. At this week's shareholder meeting, for example, Musk revealed that Tesla has a design for a personal submarine. Seriously.

Stranger still, this zany idea wasn't offered up by Musk out of the blue. For some reason, a shareholder at the meeting asked specifically whether Tesla is working on a car capable of land and sea travel. Who are these people, and what's next: a passenger seat capable of holding dinosaur friends? An ice-cream dispenser in the trunk?

The entire topic is surprising given that Tesla the carmaker—as opposed to Tesla the nascent submarine provider—only recently turned its first quarterly profit. It has suffered several unforced errors in recent years, from the overcooked and problematic gullwing doors on the Model X to the promised affordable Model 3 that, well, never actually ended up being quite as cheap as advertised. So, as cool as a submarine sounds, we feel as if Tesla should focus on its core business, that of building automobiles, before turning its attention under the sea. Luckily for Tesla, Musk agrees, since he dismissed the submarine talk at the shareholder meeting as a distraction.

BrainChip Holdings has announced that it has been accepted to present a demonstration featuring its Akida Neuromorphic System-on-Chip Technology, recognising and classifying hand gestures from the audience at the 33rd Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), at the Vancouver Convention Centre in Vancouver, Canada.

The paper titled ‘Human Gesture Recognition using Spiking Input on Akida Neuromorphic Platform’ co-authored by Sounak Dey, Arijit Mukherjee from TCS Research at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Gilles Bézard, Douglas McLelland from BrainChip will be presented.

The demonstration will involve capturing a few hand gestures and hand positions from the audience using a Dynamic Vision Sensor camera and performing live learning and classification using the Akida neuromorphic platform.

This will showcase the fast and lightweight unsupervised live learning capability of the spiking neural network (SNN) and the Akida neuromorphic chip, which takes much less data than a traditional deep neural network (DNN) counterpart, consuming much less power during training.

Akida is available as a licensable IP technology that can be integrated into ASIC devices and will be available as an integrated SoC, both suitable for applications such as surveillance, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous vehicles (AV), vision guided robotics, drones, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), acoustic analysis, and Industrial Internet-of-Things (IoT).

Akida performs neural processing and memory accesses on the edge, which vastly reduces the computing resources required of the system host CPU. This unprecedented efficiency not only delivers faster results, it consumes only a tiny fraction of the power resources of traditional AI processing. Functions like training, learning, and inferencing are orders of magnitude more efficient with Akida.

While the recognition of a simple hand gesture might at first seem simple, it is in fact quite a revolutionary advance in the state of today’s human and robot interactive environments,” said Roger Levinson, COO of BrainChip. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to showcase the extent of this revolutionary advance at NeurIPS and are eager to show how an Akida-based platform can be utilised to ingest imagery, train the system to recognise what it has seen and learn in a way that is vastly more efficient and accurate than what other solutions have been able to achieve thus far.”

NeurIPS is held to foster the exchange of research on neural information processing systems in their biological, technological, mathematical, and theoretical aspects. The core focus is peer-reviewed novel research which is presented and discussed in the general session, along with invited talks by leaders in their field. The week long event takes place December 8th to 14th and features tutorials, demonstrations, meetings and a full-day industry expo.

Here's the Pentagon's Terrifying Plan for Cyborg Supersoldiers

By Matthew Gault - Dec 9 2019, 2:00pm

The U.S. military wants soldiers that have superhuman eyesight, controllable augmented muscles that turn untrained novices into expert killers, and more.

Cybernetic enhancements that fuse humans and machines are coming, and the U.S. Military wants to be prepared.

A new report from the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Chemical Biological Center—a scientific research division of the Army with a focus on biological and chemical weapons—detailed what the field of cybernetics might look in 2050. The report, titled Cyborg Soldiers 205: Human/ Machine Fusion and the Implications for the Future of the DOD/i], reads like the framework for a dystopian novel set in a near future where injured soldiers are cybernetically enhanced, but come home to an America terrified of cyborgs.

“The primary objective of this effort was to determine the potential of machines that are physically integrated within the human body to augment and enhance the performance of human beings over the next 30 years,” the researchers said.

The study identified poor public perception as being a barrier to the mass adoption of cybernetics. Terminator II: Judgement Day poisoned us all against killer robots, much to the military’s chagrin.

“Across popular social and open-source media, literature, and film, the use of machines to enhance the physical condition of the human species has received a distorted and dystopian narrative in the name of entertainment,” the study said. “Defense leadership should understand that negative public and social perceptions will need to be overcome, if these technologies are to be fielded.”

Cyber enhancement is cutting edge technology, and it’s hard to predict where it will go over the next three decades. The Pentagon researchers focused on four probable areas of enhancement: super vision, augmented hearing, enhanced muscles, and “direct neural enhancement of the human brain for two-way data transfer.”

See like the Predator
The Pentagon predicts a world where enhanced soldiers have cybernetically enhanced eyes that allow them to see across the battlefield in different wavelengths, and identify targets in “dense, urban environments or subterranean megacities that will challenge identification and tracking of targets,” they said.

The researchers mention what becomes a disturbing theme of the study—many of these enhancements may only occur after a soldier is injured. When working with a delicate area such as the eye, injury may be the only path towards convincing a wounded warrior to receive the surgery, the study notes.

“Ocular enhancement would be an attractive medical option in situations where the eye tissue has been damaged or destroyed by injury or disease,” the researchers said. “It is deemed unlikely that individuals would willingly undergo removal of healthy tissue in an area considered to be sensitive. However, the central and critical role that vision plays in society would likely motivate warfighters who have lost part or all of their vision to voluntarily undergo surgery that would restore or even improve their ability to see.”

Muscles controlled with light
This trend of fixing fallen soldiers with cybernetics continues with optogenetic musculoskeletal control systems. “The most likely [use] would be in the restoration of lost function due to injury of muscles or nerves,” the study said. “Musculoskeletal injuries are the second leading cause of lost duty time in the U.S. Armed Forces.”

To enhance muscles, the Pentagon would enhance weak tissue with a “network of emplaced subcutaneous sensors that deliver optogenetic stimulation through programmed light pulses,” the researchers said. Optogenetics stimulates muscle tissue, or even neurons, with light instead of electricity.

“The human body would have an array of small optical sensors implanted beneath the skin in the body areas that need to be controlled. These sensors could be manifested as thin optical threads that are placed at regular intervals over critical muscle and nerve bundles and are linked to a central control area designed to stimulate each node only when the muscles below it are needed.”

According to the study, this could allow wounded soldiers to return to battle with cybernetic muscles that operate better than their meat alone did. It could also allow them to control external tools such as drones and weapons systems not directly attached to their body. Or let someone else control them remotely.

“The optogenetic controller would, in effect, take control of the motions of a warfighter’s limbs, thereby allowing a novice (i.e., the warfighter) to perform functions professionally.”

You can hear a pin drop
Cybernetic ears will both enhance perception and allow soldiers to access new abilities, according to the Pentagon.

The study imagines that future advances won’t just improve people’s hearing, but also allow for the “conversion and transmission of these signals to others across distances,” the study said. In other words, people could use cybernetic ears to access a network of voices and communication only perceptible to them. It’s like implanting your smartphone inside your ear, complete with real-time translation features for foreign languages.

Hearing loss is a major problem in the military and, for this reason, the researchers believe selling soldiers on enhanced hearing will be easier than eyes and muscles. However, the researchers feel that upgrading ears will be more invasive and less reversible than other technologies and so they recommend that the Pentagon pursue less invasive approaches. . “Electrodes that directly interface with neural pathways could be implanted with a minor surgical procedure and potentially, could be removed with minimal adverse effects,” they said.

Jacking in
The crown jewel of cybernetic enhancement is direct interface between the human brain and machines. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been working on the technology for years. It has already successfully tested “prosthetic memory chips.” Even Elon Musk is working on neural implants with the goal of “[achieving] symbiosis with artificial intelligence.”

The Pentagon’s study suggests a future where humans with neural implants are jacked into a matrix that allows them to control machines, have machines control them, and to control each other. “The enhancement would not simply entail user control of equipment (brain to machine) but also transmission to operator (machine to brain) and human to human (command and control dynamics) to enhance situational awareness as drone, computational analytical, and human information is relayed to the operator,” it said.

Cybernetically enhanced soldiers could control drones and complicated weapon systems remotely with the power of their mind. The problem is, unlike some of the other technologies discussed, there probably won’t be a non-invasive way to achieve symbiosis between soldier and machine.

Because of that, the researchers suggested that neural links be restricted to an elite class of soldier, like the Navy SEALs, who may be amenable “if they could provide significant improvements in capability, lethality, survivability, and overall battlefield superiority,” they said.

Unexpected consequences
More frightening than negative public perception of cyborgs, which the report goes into, is the Pentagon’s correct assertion that the adoption of technology has outpaced the legal and ethical frameworks that govern society. When a human merges with a machine, should the laws of war still consider it a person or a piece of equipment?

“If an enhanced warfighter is caught and captured, does he have the same protections under the Geneva Convention, and will his enhanced status alter the treatment he is likely to receive?” researchers asked.

There’s also basic questions of national security. Can cyborgs be hacked? What kind of encryption should be used and will it ever be enough? Should a soldier returning home surrender their enhancements? Is it ethical to remove the enhanced muscles that allow a wounded soldier to walk? What will the short and long term health effects of these technologies be? Should military cohorts be integrated with cyborg soldiers or do they need their own units?

The Pentagon doesn’t know. No one knows. All anyone knows is that these enhancements, in some form, are coming. They may not look exactly like what the Pentagon predicts here, but powerful people want them to happen. Billionaires want them to happen. The U.S. Military wants them to happen. The sad truth is that most moral, ethical, and legal considerations will likely be defined after the fact.

"There is so much in the world today that would have seemed like wild science fiction thirty years ago, whether its a computer in your hand on which you could search all the world's information to a President of the United States using that same computer to push foreign government disinformation,” Peter W. Singer—future war strategist, Senior Fellow at New America, and the author of the forthcoming book Burn-In: A Novel of the Real Robotic Revolution—told Motherboard in an email. “So while not everything in the military's report on a potential future human-machine fusion in 2050 may come true, we shouldn't be shocked that some parts of it do.”

ISLAM IS MOSLIMTERRORISME

a minimal power consumption of 10kW/h

Truth sounds like hate to those who hate truth.
