By: Dr. Jim Bell, Arizona State University

NASA's next Mars rover is scheduled to launch in mid-July next year and will land on the Red Planet in February 2021. Currently called "Mars 2020" (until it receives a proper name from the nationwide naming contest currently underway), the rover is made up of about 90% spare parts leftover from building the Curiosity rover. Despite looking outwardly similar to Curiosity, Mars 2020 has a very different science payload and mission. One of the new instruments is a color, stereo imaging system called Mastcam-Z. These cameras are similar in many ways to the color cameras called Mastcam on the Curiosity rover, but they have the added capability of zooming from wide angle to telephoto (hence the added "Z" for zoom).

Stereo imaging for these robotic vehicles is a critical element of mission operations. Stereo photos are used inside the rover's computer system and on the ground to create 3D "Digital Terrain Models" or DTMs. The rover's onboard software uses these DTMs to navigate between commanded waypoints, helping to identify obstacles that the rover should avoid. DTMs are also used by ground controllers (the engineers who drive the rover) to navigate the rover to places the science team wants to explore, and to place the robotic arm and instruments on rock and soil targets along the surface. Finally, DTMs are also used by the science team to understand the topography and geology of the region the rover is traversing through.

Processing these images requires specialized software that has undergone a lot of development using Earth-based systems. These include specially designed imaging systems like those developed at the aerospace agency PISCES in Hilo, Hawaii. PISCES and similar programs around the world address the latest hardware and software problems in planetary robotics, providing solutions to NASA and other space agencies.

On the Mars 2020 rover, Mastcam-Z will help infer the composition of Martian surface materials and guide decisions on where to drill and take measurements using the rover's instruments. Unlike Curiosity, Mars 2020 is outfitted with a coring drill to collect samples of rock and soil and store them in small "cache" tubes. A major goal of the Mars 2020 mission is to place these tubes where a future rover can fetch them, launch them into Mars orbit using a special ascent rocket, and transfer them to an orbiter for return to Earth. As such, the Mars 2020 rover is the first step in a planned robotic Mars Sample Return program that NASA is planning to conduct in the 2020s. Detailed analysis of these samples back on Earth will provide important clues about the past habitability of the planet, as well as important engineering information needed to successfully plan human missions to Mars—hopefully in the 2030s.

Wilde plannen :

Islam on Mars
With the colonisation of Mars around the corner, it will serve as a new opportunity to take our influence in terms deen and dhaqan. We can't afford to wait for others to take massive leaps while we linger behind. Even now, Somalis are the most religious people on earth despite our flaws. In many places in the diaspora, Hijab was only adopted when Somalis first wore them, even though there were Arabs and other Muslim ethnic groups here first. Truly our legacy lies in becoming the leading Muslim nation. We must set our sight in spreading Islam,Af Somali and the Somali calendar.

Mars looks ripe for new Kaaba there and Samaale civilization

Are we one step closer to abandoning Earth and setting up a colony on Mars with only the best and brightest?

You betcha.

Using a NASA-developed reproduction of regolith (the combination of dust, dirt and space debris) plus some organic material from Earth, the Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands has successfully grown a number of vegetables in Mars-like soil.

The vegetables, garden cress, rocket, tomato, radish, rye, quinoa, chives, peas and leeks were all considered nutritious enough to maintain healthy individuals with moderate levels of vitamins and minerals. A significant step in the push towards creating off-world colonies that are self-sustaining.

The vegetables were all edible, with the exception of spinach (no big loss), with the radish, garden cress, and rye plants showing enough vitality to produce seeds for a second crop and maintain a sustainable closed-agriculture system for a Lunar or Mars colony in the future.

Crops successfully grown in Mars soil for the first time.

Moon regolith has continued to yield poorer results and researchers are unsure why.

The Mars simulant soil was collected from volcanic areas of Hawaii that were then augmented to match the mineral and ph levels to that or Mars. The same was done with the Moon simulant regolith from deserts in Arizona with similar levels to that of Moon.

Although there is much to do in term of creating an environment that can support life - like an atmosphere free from solar radiation and punishing fluctuating temperatures - the fact we can create a sustainable means of food on a barren world is a large push in the right direction.

Find the details of the study here.

"We were blown away by the quality of the one hundred entries we received and were able to expand the winner's pool from the top three entries to the top five," said James Burk, Mars Society IT Director.

Several entries, including these top five, will be included in a special print book that the Mars Society is working to publish by late this year.

Dr. Robert Zubrin, Mars Society President, announced that we will soon be holding a one-million person colony design contest, details of which will be forthcoming.

How NASA-backed Mars ‘suit of the future’ will work ‘like second skin’ for astronauts

By Callum Hoare - PUBLISHED: 18:14, Sat, Nov 16, 2019 | UPDATED: 18:14, Sat, Nov 16, 2019

NASA is backing the construction of a “suit of the future” for astronauts to wear “like a second skin” during their future mission to Mars, which will be a revolution for exploration possibilities.

A mechanical counter-pressure (MCP) suit or space activity suit (SAS) is an experimental spacesuit which applies stable pressure against the skin by means of skintight elastic garments, unlike conventional spacesuits which use air pressure to compress the human body. The idea for an SAS suit was first floated by the United States Air Force in the Fifties and then again in the Sixties. However, the possibility has been given a new lease of life thanks to a new advance.

The Bio-Suit is an experimental space activity suit under construction at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the direction of professor Dava Newman, with support from the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts.

Professor Newman unveiled her suit during Amazon Prime’s Tomorrow’s World series.

She said last year: “So the Bio Suit is an MIT patented suit of the future, it’s a space suit for the Moon or Mars.

“I’m trying to give you, as an astronaut, maximum mobility, flexibility, it’s going to be extreme exploration when we get to Mars.

Afbeelding
The suit of the future could be used for Mars (Image: GETTY)

“We’re going there to search for life so you have to be outside, in your suits, on your knees, think of an extreme athlete.”

The narrator of the series explained the suit in more detail.

She said: “Traditional space suits are inflatable vessels for one person.

“They weigh over 140 kilos, impede movement and have to be pressurised like a plane cabin.

“The Bio Suit, however, doesn’t have the same constraints.”

Afbeelding
Professor Newman with her suit (Image: AMAZON)

The series then showed the suit being put to the test.

The narrator added: “In her laboratory, professor Newman tries out a demonstration prototype on her assistant.

“The red lines along the contours are the result of years of research and they imitate the body’s muscular fibres, forming a supple framework compressing the wearer’s body.

“An advantage of this mechanical pressurisation is that a tear would not be instantly fatal to the astronaut.

“Professor Newman thinks she needs a few more years to make the first 100 percent operational version.”

On October 8, 2015, NASA published its strategy for human exploration and colonisation of Mars, the concept operates through three distinct phases leading up to fully sustained civilisation on the Red Planet, which they hope to implement sometime in the mid-2030s.

The first stage, already under way, is the “Earth Reliant” phase, this will continue to use the International Space Station until 2024, validating deep space technologies and studying the effects of long-duration space missions on the human body.

The second stage, “Proving Ground”, ventures into cislunar space for most of its tasks, to test deep-space habitation facilities, and validate capabilities required for human exploration of Mars.

Finally, phase three, the “Earth Independent” stage includes long-term missions on the Red Planet with surface habitats that only require routine maintenance, and the harvesting of Martian resources for fuel, water, and building materials.

Polish students from Wrocław University of Science and Technology, involved with the Twardowsky Martian Base project, won second place at the Mars Colony Prize final contest held at the University of Southern California.

The Star City project by the students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology emerged victorious, while third place went to the Russian-American CrowdSpace undertaking.

The Twardowsky project comprises 19 people, who were awarded USD 5,000 in the contest. Their idea of a Martian base is characterised by its self-sufficiency. The concept also includes such features as the export of the Martian goods to Earth, the production of components to upgrade the base and aquaponics - the system of aquaculture that links the farming of fish and plants in water, which provides food for the residents of the base.

Twardowsky would be divided into six parts connected by the shared hub in the form of a main square, which will serve as a place for spending free time and having fun.

“The premises inhabited by people were designed to be in the vicinity of restaurants, coffee points, shops and medical points so as not to create gloomy, bedroom districts,'' said Orest Savytskyi, the Twardowsky team member responsible for architectural and town-planning solutions.

The silver team will not immediately return to Poland. Some team members will travel further, from the West to the East Coast, where, in Washington DC, they will present their project at the International Astronautical Congress.

The officials from Wrocław University of Science and Technology can surely speak of their huge success, as their facility had two teams among the top ten projects, chosen from among the initial 100 ventures. The Ideacity concept include the majority of buildings being located under the surface of Mars, while the vast part of the terrestrial area of the base would comprise farms, warehouses and factories. The team responsible for this project was ranked fifth.

Interdisciplinary team takes top prize in Mars colony design competition

Sara Cody | Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics - November 25, 2019

MIT PhD student George Lordos and his brother Alexandros led the project; goal of the Mars Society competition was to establish a colony on Mars for 1,000 residents.

Every 75 years, Halley’s Comet makes a triumphant return to the inner solar system, becoming visible to the naked eye from the Earth’s surface as it streaks across the night sky. In 1986, brothers George and Alexandros Lordos, who helped found the astronomy club at their high school in Cyprus, decided they were not going to miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity despite the cloudy weather.

“Together with friends, we borrowed camping supplies from the hiking club and hiked up familiar terrain on Troodos Mountain to a cloudless spot that was 5,000 feet above sea level, miles away from city lights” says George Lordos, MBA ’00, SM ’18. “When we unzipped our tent at 3 o’clock in the morning, Halley’s comet was right in front of us, in all its glory. It was like seeing a ghost ship floating on a sea of stars.”

Recently, the brothers again combined their shared passion with their professional expertise to team up and develop Star City, a concept for a human city on Mars. Their design won first place at the Mars Colony Prize Design contest, which was hosted by the Mars Society and judged by a panel that included experts from NASA and SpaceX.

Today, Lordos is a PhD candidate in the Engineering Systems Laboratory at MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the head teaching assistant at MIT’s System Design and Management Program, researching sustainable human space settlement architectures with professors Olivier de Weck and Jeffrey Hoffman. His brother, Alexandros Lordos, is currently the director of the Center for the Study of Life Skills and Resilience at the Department of Psychology at the University of Cyprus, and head of learning and innovation at the Center for Sustainable Peace and Democratic Development, researching the development of integrated systems to foster mental health and social cohesion in countries facing conflict-related adversities.

“In addition to addressing the engineering requirements to put humans on Mars, the overall philosophy of our approach was to provide the residents with a diverse array of capabilities, rather than ready-made solutions, relying on the human capacity to be resourceful and resilient in addressing the many unknown challenges that will arise,” says Lordos. “This ensures not only their survival, but also that their well-being, agency, and capacity to grow will be duly considered so they may thrive there as well.”

The goal of the competition was to establish a successful colony on Mars for 1,000 residents. One hundred entrants from around the world submitted proposals, which were eventually narrowed to 10 finalists who presented their proposals at the 22nd Annual Mars Society Convention in October. The criteria for the judges’ consideration included technical merit, economic viability, social and political organization, and aesthetics.

Using abundant energy supplies and heavy equipment, Star City’s residents will first focus on carving out habitats by tunneling inside a crater rim to create networks of living and work spaces. By working with the natural topography of Mars, the residents will be able to develop large habitable spaces that will be safe from radiation and other dangers. At the same time, the excavated material will be mined for water and useful minerals that can then support local industry and the growth of self-sustaining crops through hydroponics. From there, they would continue to build around the crater rim to create residential and commercial areas that contain shops, restaurants, and libraries, eventually pooling their resources to develop the city’s central hub, which will house Mars University and other shared facilities.

“The idea is to start with five distinct villages that will be constructed around the crater rim, each aiming for a population of 200 residents within a decade of the first landing, and originating from different Earth continents,” says Lordos. “The five villages will interconnect their tunnel networks and focus on continuous growth of their habitats, capabilities, stocks of resources, and quality of life.”

According to Alexandros, the wheel-like physical layout is one of the key mechanisms to build an organic sense of community among Star City residents, which is essential to their well-being as they navigate the challenges of living together on a distant planet. Proximity will enable each village to have access to the other four for material and social support, inspiration, leisure, new ideas, different solutions to common challenges, and socialization. By teaming up to address survival challenges and achieve aspirational goals, they will establish a support network completely unique to Star City so residents can better navigate through times of difficulty.

“Drawing on cumulative insights from the social sciences and our own experience in developing systems to support societies facing extreme adversities, we have identified core aspects of the human condition that will be relevant for socio-economic development on Mars,” says Alexandros. “Specifically, we considered the pivotal role that individual as well as community resilience will be expected to play on Mars, sought to ensure a balance between survival-orientation and self-expression in everyone’s daily life, while making room for Star City residents to develop multi-layered identities as members of their more intimate village communities and, at the same time, as citizens of a vibrant and forward-looking technological civilization.”

In addition to building community by nurturing the well-being of its human residents, Star City will also build a viable economy and political system to ensure that commerce and governance provide stability for its residents. To pay for importing much-needed supplies from Earth in the short term, Star City residents will leverage their local know-how, infrastructure, and heavy equipment to provide construction services to others who may wish to build a city on Mars. In the long term, Star City could establish itself as a central hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and tourism as humanity travels farther and farther into the reaches of space.

“Our vision is not to simply send human explorers to Mars in order to set up these scientific outposts where we can perform useful experiments, though that is an important and valuable component,” says Robert Zubrin, president of Pioneer Astronautics and the founder and president of the Mars Society, who organized the contest and served on the panel of judges. “The fundamental question we are asking is if we can expand human civilization into other worlds. Of course, you have to have the correct technical analysis, but there are all of these other human dimensions to make a colony on Mars work, and Star City addressed those in the most successful way.”

The Star City sociotechnical concept and urban plan was created by George and Alexandros Lordos, with architectural support for the creation of design studies, drawings, and renderings by lead architects Nikos Papapanousis and Tatiana Kouppa, and their team members Efi Koutsaftaki, Aliki Noula, and Aris Michailidis of Delta Architects, Athens, Greece.

Making Green on the Red Planet: How Might We Build an Economy on Mars?

By Matthew S. Williams - December 02, 2019

A lot has been said about the possibility of building a colony on Mars. But what kind of an economy could the Martians have?

In the coming decades, space agencies and private ventures want to begin sending humans to Mars. Some of these organizations are actively planning on establishing the first human settlement there.

With all this planning, it's fair to say that the idea of colonizing Mars may be moving from the realm of science fiction into the realm of true possibility. However, this also raises all kinds of issues, which go far beyond the usual technical hurdles and cost assessments.

There are also valid questions about whether or not humans could survive on Mars in the long-term. And there are ethical questions concerning how humans might transform Mars' environment - not just through full-scale terraforming, but through any and all alterations to the Martian landscape.

Taking all of that into consideration, there is also the entirely valid question of whether or not a colony on Mars would be economically viable in the long-run. Most serious proposals to create a Martian settlement makes a point of addressing the issue of self-sufficiency in terms of resources.

So, it is important to consider whether or not we can build a working economy on Mars to go along with a human settlement. What challenges need to be overcome in order to do that, and (above all) is it worth all the fuss?

Mars as the "new frontier"
To enthusiasts of Martian colonization, the hope of a "new frontier" comparable to the exploration and colonization of North America is often raised. Putting aside the many ugly aspects of that phase in our history (i.e., conquest, genocide, and slavery), which are in any case not likely to be replicated on Mars, there is a clear logic to this approach.

By presenting the Martian landscape as a new frontier, proponents of Martian colonization are appealing to people's sense of adventure. Living in such an environment would be very challenging, but that's precisely what makes it appealing to many people.

Emirati students are getting a once in a lifetime chance to work with the Emirates Mars Mission.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre is now accepting applications for its elite "research experience for undergraduates programme", or REU.

It runs for several months in the summer and successful students will gain critical experience in programming and data analysis under the supervision of the MBRSC team, along with the chance to work in the United States and France.

The handful of Emiratis selected — who must be studying science or engineering — will conduct research that could prove vital for the landmark mission that will see a probe named Amal, translated from Arabic as Hope, blast off in July next year and reach the surface of Mars by 2021.

It will be the first mission to Mars by any Arab or Muslim majority country and will fall in the same year the UAE celebrates its 50th birthday.

More than 100 Emirati engineers have been working on the project in partnership with universities in the US.

"The students' participation in the Hope Probe's scientific mission, through the REU 2020, will help them acquire the necessary skills in analysing data on the Red Planet," said Hessa Al Matrooshi of the MBRSC.

It is hoped that some of those who participate in the programme will go on to forge careers in the UAE's rapidly expanding space sector. Hazza Al Mansoori became the first Emirati in space this year and a second astronaut programme was launched a few days ago.

Maj Al Mansoori's achievement followed a series of successful satellite launches over the past few years that put the UAE in the world's vanguard of space exploration.

"Over the past years the [REU] programme has proven successful in preparing highly-qualified Emirati cadres to participate in the Hope Probe mission," said Omran Sharaf, project manager of the Hope probe.

"This edition of REU will be very special as it goes in parallel with the launch of Hope to Mars."

The REU programme is now in its sixth year and so far, about 30 Emirati students have worked on projects such as how to support life in space, studying the atmosphere and the search for water.
