Pakistan Leven in chaos

US military to cancel $300m in Pakistan aid over terror groups
The US military says it is cancelling $300m (£230m) in aid to Pakistan over what it calls Islamabad's failure to take action against militant groups.

President Donald Trump has previously accused Pakistan of deceiving the US while receiving billions of dollars.
Pentagon spokesman Lt Col Koné Faulkner said the US military would aim to spend the money on other "urgent priorities".
The move, which needs to be approved by the US Congress, is part of a broader suspension announced in January.

The US state department has criticised Pakistan, a key ally, for failing to deal with terrorist networks operating on its soil, including the Haqqani network and the Afghan Taliban.
"We continue to press Pakistan to indiscriminately target all terrorist groups," Col Faulkner said in a statement on Saturday, adding that the $300m aid - which had earlier been suspended - should be used elsewhere due to "a lack of Pakistani decisive actions" in tackling the issue.

Pakistan on verge of bailout, but revokes appointment of key economist amid Islamist backlash
Despite being on the verge of an economic crisis, Pakistan’s government has caved to pressure by hardline Islamists to cancel the appointment of a Princeton economist to the Economic Advisory Council.

Atif Mian, 43, who is considered to be one of the world’s top young economists, had his appointment to the key role on the 18-member Council revoked because of his adherence to the Ahmadis Muslim minority.

The announcement came as a surprise given the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government had just three days ago defended the appointment of the top economist, saying it would “not bow to extremists.”

Asia Bibi mag Pakistan verlaten: herziening vrijspraak afgewezen

“We nemen onze verantwoordelijkheid.”
[...]

PM Khan branded ‘Jewish agent’ after meeting Soros as Islamist leader declares ‘WAR’ on govt

Afbeelding

The meeting between billionaire George Soros and Pakistani PM Imran Khan has apparently backfired for Khan, as the country’s Islamists saw it as a “proof” of his ties with Jews and vowed to oust the government.
The “war” on Khan has been announced by the leader of the Islamist political party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), Fazlur Rehman, who also leads an alliance of five right-wing and hardline-Islamist parties, known as Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA).

The meeting prompted a very angry reaction among Pakistani Islamists. Rehman accused Khan of being a “Jewish agent” striving to turn the country into a puppet of foreign players.
“By meeting that infamous Jew, [Khan] has made it clear that [his government] doesn’t want to bring reforms in religious education. They want to make Pakistan's educational system subservient to the West,” Rehman stated.
The Soros-Khan talks have sure come in handy for Rehman, as he has repeatedly accused Khan of having close ties to Jews – as well as the US – and declared in 2013 that voting for him was ultimately “haram” (forbidden) for true Muslims. When asked for proof back then, however, Rehman said his own word was enough, since such a righteous man as he is would never speak ill of anybody.

Pakistan protest: Patients die as lawyers ransack Lahore hospital
Three patients died when hundreds of lawyers attacked a hospital in Lahore during a furious dispute with doctors.

Video showed the lawyers ransacking wards at the cardiac hospital, beating up staff and smashing equipment.
As panic spread, doctors and paramedics hid, leaving patients unattended, including those in a critical state.
Riot police fired tear gas to disperse the lawyers and more than 20 arrests were made. It took more than two hours to restore order, officials said.

The lawyers had been protesting over the alleged mistreatment of some of their colleagues by hospital staff last month.
But the final trigger for the violence appears to have been a video posted on social media by a doctor on Tuesday night in which he poked fun at the lawyers.

How did the attack unfold?
According to hospital administrators, more than 200 lawyers wielding sticks stormed Lahore's Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) at midday on Wednesday.
Hospital officials said the lawyers forced their way past security and split into groups, attacking various departments and wards.
Video footage shared on social media showed lawyers - in suits and ties - smashing medical equipment and windows, and beating up staff and officials including Punjab information minister Fayazul Hasan Chauhan who had arrived on the scene to try to restore calm.

They also stormed the nurses' hostel, breaking furniture and beating some of the staff, an official complaint from the hospital says.
Lawyers also damaged several cars parked outside the hospital and set at least one police van on fire.
Some of the protesters allegedly fired gunshots in the air when riot police intervened.

Hospital sources said at least three patients - a woman and two men - died because doctors could not attend to them during the violence. It is believed that the woman had been in the intensive care unit.

Police reinforcements were eventually deployed, leading to more scuffles in which several lawyers were injured.
Officers said later they had arrested more than 20 lawyers and filed complaints against about 250 on charges of violence and assault.

What led up to the violence?

There has been simmering anger among young lawyers since 20 November when half a dozen of them accompanied a colleague to the hospital for the treatment of his sick mother, says the BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad.
There they got into an argument with hospital staff and a doctor on duty, leading to a fierce fist fight in which the lawyers were outnumbered by the hospital staff.

Both sides filed police complaints against each other but no arrests were made.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-50757383
What has the reaction been in Pakistan?

The lawyers who took part in the attack on the hospital have been widely criticised in Pakistani media.
"Pakistanis have been witnesses to violent acts by lawyers for several years now," commented one television anchor on Geo TV on Thursday.
"They have assaulted citizens, attacked policemen, raised their hands on judges and vandalised courts. But yesterday they crossed all limits," she added.
Other commentators said it was a new low for Pakistani society's sinking levels of tolerance which is giving way to mob justice.

Our correspondent says the state's failure to deliver social justice lies in the rise of interest groups within political, judicial and economic circles who are protected by the country's powerful establishment.

Afrasiab Khattak, a former chairman of the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), tweeted that Pakistan was "caught in a vicious cycle of anarchy and militaristic regimentation".
He added: "Trampling of the constitution, rise of militarisation and lack of tolerance create anarchy, and a typical state response is the deployment of [paramilitary] rangers."

After the lawyers called for a strike across Punjab on Thursday, the provincial government has asked for the deployment of rangers at all public offices, including offices of senior police officials.

No Sikh threatened, fight was between 2 Muslim groups: Pakistan
Facing flak for the vandalism at the Sikh holy shrine of Nankana Sahib, Pakistan on Saturday said the “altercation” involved two Muslim groups rather than intimidation of Sikhs inside the gurdwara — an astounding claim in the face of videos of Friday’s

India had on Friday strongly condemned the attack, which saw mobs pelting stones at the gurdwara, apparently in retaliation against Sikhs filing a police complaint over the abduction, forceful conversion and marriage in August last year of Jagjit Kaur, the daughter of a granthi. The mob was led by the brother of the man Kaur was forcibly married to, and who can be heard threatening to evict Sikhs from the shrine.

According to eyewitnesses, the situation turned so tense that the local Sikh population and visiting pilgrims were forced to seek shelter in the gurdwara. A viral video of the event showed the lead instigator demanding justice for his brother, Mohammad Hassan, accused of abducting Kaur. According to Hassan’s family, Kaur “opted” to marry the accused of her own free will and is willing to testify in court.

Interestingly, religious affairs and interfaith harmony minister Noorul Haq Qadri supported the original account of the attack on the gurdwara. He told the media that the protest was organised by Hassan’s family and neighbours, demanding his release from police custody. Qadri slammed India’s attempts to transform an ordinary dispute into an example of communal strife, claiming New Delhi was trying to shift attention from its own domestic unrest.
On the other hand, the Pakistan interior ministry tried to pass off the incident as literally a “fly in a teacup”. According to them, two men, Saqlain and , visited a tea shop near the gurdwara and complained of a fly in their tea. In response, the owners — Zaman (Hassan’s uncle), Iftikhar and Adnan (Hassan’s brother) —attacked them, resulting in a scuffle.

Pakistan said the gurdwara remained “untouched and undamaged” and added, “All insinuations to the contrary, particularly the claims of acts of ‘desecration and destruction’ and desecration of the holy place, are not only false but also mischievous.”

Official sources in Delhi said instead of taking firm action against miscreants, Pakistan was trying to give a new and absurd twist to the incident which had hurt Sikhs all over the world. “Can Pakistan also deny videos of people openly abusing Sikhs and threatening to drive them out of Nankana Sahib?” asked an Indian official.

The incident and the viral videos are a setback to Pakistan’s bid to reach out to Sikhs, stir up the Khalistani cause and create trouble for India. The reports of Jagjit Kaur’s abduction and the mob at Nankana Sahib sits poorly with Pakistan’s efforts to turn Sikh groups against India and it seems to have chosen to pretend that Friday’s incident never happened.

Noodtoestand in Pakistan wegens sprinkhanenplaag

Locust Invasion Puts Pakistan in State of Emergency
Swarms of locusts are wreaking havoc in the agricultural heart of Pakistan, destroying the cotton crop in Punjab and Sind provinces.
This is the second time since 1993 that locusts threaten to devastate crops in the South Asian country.

Pakistan has declared a nationwide emergency and urgently appealed for help from the international community.
[...]Khusro Bakhtiar, federal minister for food security, told The Media Line, “Indeed it is a national emergency and the federal government is taking all possible measures to control the locust swarms.
“We are facing the worst infestation in more than two decades and therefore decided to impose a national emergency to deal with the threat,” he said.
[...]
Abdul Ghani Memon, general secretary of the Pakistan Farmers Association, told The Media Line, “The locust attacks could devastate the country’s entire agricultural economy.

“The locusts’ swarms aggravated the farmers’ problems at the grassroots level and we are not satisfied with the steps taken by the government,” he said. “The lack of grassroots measures at the government level is causing anxiety among cotton growers and farmers.”
Memon said that about 300,000 square kilometers of agricultural land have been devastated.

In Pakistan gelooft bijna iedereen dat 'bidden helpt'. Zeker als het over ziekte gaat. Corona.
Why Pakistan isn't closing mosques despite the coronavirus threat
Pakistan has crossed 1,200 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and the actual infected is likely significantly higher. Yet, unlike other countries like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, Pakistan has not banned congregational prayers that pose a clear threat to public health.

A few weeks ago, thousands thronged to Raiwind for the annual congregation of the Tablighi Jamaat, a transnational Islamic piety movement. The Federal Government requested that the congregation be suspended – but only on the second day.

For weeks, congregations in mosques have continued despite dire warnings. Yesterday, a council of the country's most prominent Islamic ulema met and all but one, a Shia representative, proclaimed that mosques should remain open and that Friday congregation prayers should proceed, albeit shortened.

Today, as I write this article, thousands if not hundreds of thousands of men across Pakistan will have visited their local mosques for Friday prayers despite the threat to their lives and the lives of their families.

The politics around Islamic authority in Pakistan is an immensely competitive space, and this competition shapes the refusal of the ulema to implement the closing of mosques despite the dire threat of Covid-19.

Nobody wants to be seen as backing down from the commitment to a foundational religious practice like congregational prayer. In the competition for being the authentic and true representatives of Islam, admitting the need to close mosques is to cede the symbolic value of Islamic faith to others.

The ranking ulema in Pakistan can find their authority challenged both by other ranking ulema but also by lower-tier ulema and mosque imams. There are economic issues at play, as well.

Madrassas in Pakistan produce graduates who fill the mosques of Pakistan, and they depend on mosques for their livelihood. The mosque economy depends on alms and is therefore tied to the flow of bodies in the mosque. To demand a closing of mosques can, then, potentially invite the ire of one's constituency.

The Pakistani state draws directly on Islamic authority and thus has become beholden to Islamic actors, particularly to the authority of the ulema.

Daniel Pearl: Pakistan overturns convicted man's death sentence
Pakistan has overturned the death sentence of the man convicted of killing US journalist Daniel Pearl, defence lawyers have told reporters.

British-born Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, who has been in prison since 2002, has had his sentence reduced to seven years, said lawyer Khawaja Naveed.
Three other men given life sentences over the killing have been acquitted by the Sindh High Court and released.

Pearl, who worked for the Wall Street Journal, went missing in January 2002.
He had been researching Islamist militant activity in Karachi in the wake of the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US.
A month later, authorities said he had been killed after receiving video footage of his beheading.

Sheikh was convicted shortly afterwards by an anti-terrorism court, but there have long been questions over the case.
A group of US journalists, including former colleagues of Pearl, said in 2011 that they believed Sheikh had not carried out the beheading.
The Pearl Project alleged the beheading was carried out by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is being held in Guantanamo Bay, accused of being behind the 9/11 attacks.

Mr Naveed told Reuters on Thursday that the murder charges had not been proven, so his client's sentence had been reduced to seven years for the kidnapping.
"Omar has already served 18 years, so his release orders will be issued sometime today. He will be out in a few days," he said.

Coronavirus: Pakistan lifts bans on mosque prayers for Ramadan
Pakistan has lifted bans on congregational prayers at mosques ahead of Ramadan, prompting alarm from some health experts who are worried about the spread of Covid-19.

The government bowed to calls from influential clerics and religious parties to relax the country’s pandemic precautions, which include a limit of three to five people visiting mosques at any time.
The decision, after meetings between President Arif Alvi and religious leaders, came less than a week before the start of the Ramadan, when attendance at mosques increases.

Government officials and religious leaders agreed to allow communal prayers if mosques signed up to 20 precautions to stop the coronavirus sweeping through their congregations.
The decision was described as a dangerous precedent at odds with many other Muslim nations where mosques were closed.

Dr Mishal Khan, an associate professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said she was “very concerned” about the decision.
“As a policy analyst I'm well aware that religious leaders are powerful and the government would have had little choice," Dr Khan said.
"But giving the impression to the public that congregations can be safe is dangerous.”
