December start kouder dan normaal: dit is nu de kans op een witte kerst

In de eerste helft van december is het waarschijnlijk kouder en droger dan normaal, meldt Weeronline. „Echte winterkou met sneeuwpret en ijspret zit er waarschijnlijk echter niet in”, aldus meteoroloog Jaco van Wezel, die ook al even vooruitblikt op de kerstperiode.

Gemiddeld is het begin december overdag een graad of 7 en ’s nachts een graad of 2. De verwachting toont nu op de meeste dagen maxima van 2-4 graden en lichte vorst in de nachten. Een oostenwind voert vrij koude lucht aan, maar echte winterkou zal ons land niet bereiken. De matige oostenwind veroorzaakt gevoelstemperaturen van -2 tot -5 graden. Als het in de nacht opklaart, kan het kwik dalen tot -5.

Begin december is het vaak bewolkt. „Door het grijze weer breken de donkere dagen voor kerst al vroeg aan. De kans op neerslag is klein, maar zo nu en dan is een beetje regen of natte sneeuw mogelijk”, aldus Van Wezel.

De prognoses voor de kerstdagen, over iets meer dan drie weken, zijn nog onzeker. Het vrij koude weer van begin december zal waarschijnlijk verdwijnen. „Statistisch gezien is de kans op een witte kerst slechts zeven procent. Maar boterzacht lijkt het dit jaar niet te worden en daarmee mag de liefhebber van sneeuw met kerst nog hoop houden”, aldus Van Wezel, die wel waarschuwt dat de verwachting nog onzeker is. „Voor een witte kerst moet het precies op het goede moment wat kouder zijn dan normaal en dan moet er ook nog wat neerslag vallen.”

Wij zagen in Zoeterwoude de eerste sneeuwvlokjes vallen. Niet veel, het duurde maar even, maar de sneeuwvlokjes dwarrelde wel.

De winter lijkt nu echt door te zetten. Na een koude nacht wordt het maandag waarschijnlijk waterkoud. In de hogere gebieden in Zuid-Limburg kan een paar centimeter sneeuw blijven liggen.

Meteo Limburg verwacht 1 tot 3 centimeter sneeuw met gladheid; ook maandagochtend. In de rest van het land blijft het droog of valt soms een beetje motregen bij een temperatuur van een graad of 2.

In de nacht van zondag op maandag zijn er in de hele provincie Limburg perioden met lichte regen en in Zuid-Limburg en deels Midden-Limburg valt (natte) sneeuw. Op 20 november werd het in het noorden van Nederland ook al een beetje wit na lichte sneeuwval.

Waterkoud
Maandag wordt een bewolkte dag en daarbij kan van tijd tot tijd licht (mot)regenen, meldt Weeronline. De temperatuur stijgt naar 2 graden in het zuidoosten tot 6 graden aan de noordwestkust. Door een matige noordoosten- tot noordenwind voelt het waterkoud aan.

Dinsdag wordt het wat minder koud. Heel lokaal kan zelfs de zon even doorbreken. Het wordt 4 of 5 graden in het zuidoosten tot ruim 7 graden aan de westkust. Woensdag kan af en toe een winterse bui vallen.

De dagen daarna wordt het kouder dan gemiddeld. Overdag is het vaak 2 tot 4 graden en ’s nachts kan het vooral in het binnenland licht vriezen. Het is wisselvallig weer met wolkenvelden, enkele buien en soms wat zon. De buien zijn winters met behalve regen af en toe ook hagel of wat natte sneeuw.

Gemiddeld is het deze tijd van het jaar 6 tot 8 graden.

Ik hoop dat jij ook de kou kan doorstaan Mahalingam. Als je eens een keer echt een warm bad of douche wil, dan kom je hier maar naar toe.

Dat douchen is geen probleem 1x per week.
Electrisch kacheltje in het douchehok en een regendouche met een grote geyser.
Vroeger toen er barre winters waren kwam het voor dat na het douchen de ijskristallen aan de muur zaten.

Het is koud en de benzine auto van mijn zus wilde niet meer starten. Bekend probleem: oude accu trekt het niet meer door de kou. Dus een nieuwe erin.
Ik vroeg mij af hoe dat zit met auto's die alleen op accu's rijden?
Ook daar is last en zodoende worden die accu's op temperatuur gehouden. Resultaat:

Hundreds of flights cancelled as winter storm and cold sweeps the US

A powerful Arctic winter storm is making its way through the US and parts of Canada, bringing with it frigid temperatures and flight delays ahead of the busiest travel days of the year.

More than 100 million people across the US are under winter weather alerts, and snowy conditions are expected to wreak travel chaos this weekend.

Major airports have already cancelled flights in anticipation of the storm.

The cold snap could bring the coldest Christmas in decades, say forecasters.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said bone-chilling temperatures of -50F (-45C) and -70F were possible by the end of this week in some parts of the country.

Meteorologists say the winter storm could become a "bomb cyclone" - an unofficial term for a certain type of powerful, rapidly strengthening storm - by Friday.

The Arctic air mass is projected to travel as low as the US-Mexico border, where strong wind gusts will dip the temperature to 15F (-9.4C) in El Paso, Texas.

Even Florida, the Sunshine State, is projected to see its coldest Christmas in 30 years.

The NWS has called it a "once-in-a-generation" winter weather event, especially as the storm reaches the Great Lakes region, where its pressure is expected to reach the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane.

The storm is also bringing with it snowfall and powerful winds, which are expected to cause damage and power outages in the Midwest and Canada.

Where has the storm and severe cold hit?

Frigid temperatures are already being felt by millions as the storm and bitter cold moves eastward:

Temperatures have plunged in several US states, including Texas, Kansas and Missouri.

In Colorado, temperatures dipped to a record-breaking low of -9F from 42F on Thursday. Meanwhile, temperatures in Wyoming have dropped as low as -35F

Later on Thursday, forecasters expect heavy snowfall will begin to hit Chicago, whipped around by gusts topping 50mph (80km/h).

In Canada, much of Ontario and parts of Quebec are also bracing for a major winter storm on Thursday that is expected to last through the Christmas weekend, bringing with it "strong and potentially damaging winds," Canada's National Weather Service said.

Winter storm has disrupted travel

The storm has come during the busiest travel days of the year. The Transportation Security Administration said it expects holiday travel volume to be close to pre-pandemic levels, with the busiest day on Thursday.

More than 2,200 flights in the US have already been cancelled on Thursday and Friday, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware.

This includes cancellations out of Chicago's airport - one of the busiest in the country.

In anticipation of travel disruptions, major airlines including United, Delta and American have offered to waive fees for travellers who wish to reschedule their flights.

Snowy conditions and freezing roadways are also expected to wreak havoc on road travel this weekend.

Roads along the Colorado-Wyoming border were closed on Wednesday due to nearly zero visibility.

In South Dakota, more than 100 cars were stranded on snow-covered roads on Wednesday, prompting emergency rescue operations. The airport in the state's capital city has also closed.

The American Automobile Association estimated that more than 112 million people will travel 50 miles (80 km) or more from home between Friday and January 2, the vast majority -102 million - by car.

"We had a great Thanksgiving week with minimal disruption," US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told cable channel MSNBC on Wednesday.

The governors of Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia and Oklahoma have declared states of emergency.

Other states, like Maryland, have activated emergency response operations ahead of the storm, while others have opened warming shelters.

In Colorado, the Denver Coliseum, an indoor arena, has been converted into a warming centre.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden said his administration has contacted the governors of 26 affected states and that the federal government is prepared to offer help where needed.

He also encouraged people to avoid travelling as the conditions worsen. "Please take this storm extremely seriously," Mr Biden said.

What is a bomb cyclone?

The term "bomb cyclone" has been used to describe this storm as it develops over the Great Lakes region. But what exactly is that?

Bomb cyclone is a term given to a storm that intensifies rapidly, with its central air pressure dropping by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.

They are referred to as bomb cyclones due to the explosive power caused by the rapid fall in pressure.

Such storms bring weather ranging from blizzards to severe thunderstorms to heavy precipitation.

Bomb cyclones are most common on the east coast of the US and Canada, where the cool land and warm Gulf Stream current provide optimal conditions.

In de VS heerst een enorme koude uitbraak met temperaturen tot min 30 graden. Zelfs aan de Golf van Mexico wordt het fris. Regionaal heeft de polaire lucht al nieuwe records gebracht.

IJskoude polaire lucht heeft zich over een groot deel van de Verenigde Staten verspreid. De temperaturen dalen tot ongeveer min 30 graden, vooral in het Midwesten. In sommige regio's zal het gedurende korte tijd zelfs nog aanzienlijk kouder zijn. Meerdere grote vliegvelden hebben in totaal meer dan 5300 vluchten geannuleerd. President Biden riep op om de waarschuwingen voor kou en het extreme weer heel serieus te nemen.

Vandaag bereikt de koudegolf zijn hoogtepunt. Tot in Texas, Louisiana en New Mexico zakt het kwik regionaal meer dan 10 graden onder het vriespunt. Zelfs in Piedras Negras, Mexico, zakte het kwik naar -3 graden. Het is er daarmee zo'n 20 graden kouder dan normaal. Ook met Kerstmis is het koud in de VS, maar dan heeft de kou zich vooral naar de oostelijke staten verplaatst


De kou bereikt de oostkust van de VS later in een afgezwakte vorm.

Het is niet alleen de kou op zichzelf, een harde wind met windstoten tot 80 kilometer per uur zorgt er namelijk voor dat de gevoelstemperatuur op sommige plaatsen daalt naar -40 tot -50 graden. Daarnaast zorgt een sneeuwstorm in sommige staten voor een chaos op de weg en in de lucht. Reizen wordt afgeraden, ook omdat een stilstaande auto levensgevaarlijk kan zijn bij pech onderweg.

Extreem snel dalende temperaturen

In sommige regio's koelde het in een paar uur tijd meer dan twintig graden af. In Cheyenne, Wyoming, ten noorden van Denver, daalde de temperatuur woensdag binnen twee uur van +6 naar min 22 graden. Het is een nieuw record voor dit weerstation. In deze staat werd het ook het koudst. Een weerstation in Wyoming heeft een temperatuur van -41 graden gemeten.

India in the grip of icy cold weather

The past few weeks have seen unusually cold weather sweep across northern India, with disastrous consequences for the millions of Indians who live there and are unaccustomed to the cold.

While climate doomsday preachers in the West talk about heat waves and extreme weather when there is mild or warm weather over a period of time, other parts of the world instead experience problems due to the reverse. In northern India, an unusual and prolonged cold wave has held large areas in its iron grip for almost two weeks.

Thick fog and temperatures around zero degrees in the multi-million city of New Delhi have already claimed many lives through accidents and cold – but another threat comes from the risk of poisoning as the freezing residents of the city set fire to everything they come across, including trash and waste.

Unusually cold

The coldest temperatures recorded so far were in the Kashmir province of northern India. There, the temperature in the lowlands has dropped to -7 degrees, which for Europeans may not be remarkable, but for Indians who rarely get weather colder than 6-7 plus degrees on any given day, it is a big difference from what they are used to.

If the temperature drops below 4 plus degrees, it is considered a cold wave. Last week, the coldest was 1,9 plus degrees in the capital, New Delhi. Meteorologists count this year’s January as the coldest ever in India.
“I have never in my entire career seen such low temperatures in a forecast. Freezing −4 to +2 on the plains. Wow!” meteorologist Nevdeep Dahiya wrote on Twitter.

According to Indian meteorologists, the cause of the unusually cold weather is changes in the jet streams that circulate around the Indian peninsula.

Thick fog and air pollution a dangerous combination

The thick and persistent fog leads daily to a large number of accidents in New Delhi, which with its 23 million inhabitants has now found itself in a difficult situation. Reports of a lack of food supply have been posted on social media, but so far dismissed by official sources who believe that there have indeed been some interruptions and delays due to traffic accidents around railway stations and roads in and out of the city, but that so far these have not leading to any shortage of food or fuel.

In the cold and the fog, however, there are two things that primarily give cause for concern for the rulers in the city. On the one hand, there is an unclear number of homeless people (according to many experts it is at least 150 000, possibly closer to 200 000) who lack shelter from the cold weather. The city’s approximately 250 ill-equipped homeless shelters have room for 19 000 people, but have long been filled beyond capacity. The number of dead people who are reported to have frozen to death during the nights and who are picked up during the day is claimed by various aid organizations to be between “dozens” to “hundreds” every day, but no official figure exists.

But another problem has arisen as tens of thousands of smaller bonfires are lit every day, often fueled by scavenged rubbish. The air pollution that usually plagues the city during the winter months is now considered even worse and the air is filled with toxic gases and pollutants that bind to the water droplets in the fog, weigh down and remain in the city like a toxic blanket. This leads to the very air that the residents are forced to breathe causing lung diseases and a greatly increased risk of cancer as a result.

The cost in human life of frostbite can thus rise over time, not only because people freeze to death, but because they become poisoned in their attempts to keep warm.

Heavy snow continued Wednesday across much of Japan as the country grapples with the most severe cold snap of the season so far, with trains and vehicles stranded and at least one person left dead as winter storms caused difficulties.

One person has died due to the adverse conditions in southwest Oita Prefecture, with two in Okayama Prefecture found without vital signs, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihiko Isozaki said Wednesday at a news conference in Tokyo.

The deaths of two more people in Niigata Prefecture north of the capital are also being investigated in connection with the cold weather, he said.

Het kan -8 graden worden... in Marokko

Een deel van Marokko krijgt deze week te maken met ijskoude taferelen. Na Nederland volgt nu het Noord-Afrikaanse land met een code oranje-waarschuwing wegens sneeuwval.

Het Directoraat-Generaal voor Meteorologie (DGM) heeft gewaarschuwd voor een temperatuurdaling in meerdere provincies. Er worden deze week minimumtemperaturen tussen -8 en -3 graden verwacht.

Volgens meteoroloog Wouter van Bernebeek van Weerplaza gaat het om dezelfde luchtbel die laatst boven ons land hing. ,,Die komt helemaal uit het noorden van Europa. Vorige week hadden wij er hier last van met code oranje door sneeuw en ijzel.”

IJskoud in de bergen
Inmiddels is de koude lucht afgezakt naar het noordwesten van Afrika. Daarvoor zorgde de winterbubbel nog voor sneeuwval op Mallorca en Ibiza. De Spaanse krant Ultimahora schreef dat er op sommige plekken in Mallorca zeven centimeter sneeuw lag. Italië had vorige week ook te maken met zware sneeuwval. Dat leidde daar tot gesloten scholen en wegen.

Helemaal uitzonderlijk zijn de winterse taferelen niet, maar wel opvallend, stelt Van Bernebeek. ,,Onderweg is de luchtbel ietsjes opgewarmd. Maar in bergachtige Marokkaanse gebieden gaat het best koud worden. Ik sluit niet uit dat er her en der sneeuw zal vallen.” Dat kan zelfs al op 600 meter boven de zeespiegel zijn, stellen klimatologen.

De weerdienst van Marokko heeft code oranje uitgeroepen voor de provincies Ifrane, Taza, Sefrou, Boulmane, Beni Mellal, Azilal, Khenifra, Al Haouz, Midelt en Tinghir. Nieuwswebsite Morocco World News voegt toe dat enige regenval welkom is. Het land kampte afgelopen zomer met een van de ergste droogteperiodes ooit.

Coldest wind chill ever recorded in continental US, say forecasters

Forecasters say the coldest wind chill ever has been recorded in the continental US as an Arctic cold snap freezes a swathe of North America.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said the icy gusts on Mount Washington in New Hampshire on Friday produced a wind chill of -108F (-78C).

Nearly 100 million people across the north-eastern US and Canada are shivering in the frigid blast.

Authorities warned frostbite could strike in less than 10 minutes.
Residents from Manitoba to Maine are being urged to limit their time outdoors until Saturday in the "once-in-a-generation" cold snap.

The NWS said the actual temperature on the summit of Mount Washington at 20:00 on Friday (01:00 GMT Saturday) was down to -46F - the coldest ever recorded there.

The combined effect of wind and cold is also expected to bring some of the lowest wind chill temperatures since the 1980s in the New England state of Maine, as well as in Quebec and parts of eastern Canada.

Power companies were expecting historic levels of energy consumption into Saturday morning during the coldest period.

Boston is under a cold emergency. Public schools have been closed in the city, as well as in nearby Worcester and in Buffalo, New York.

New York City - which could see wind chills as low as -10F (-23C) - has enacted an emergency designation that allows the homeless to go to any shelter to seek warmth.

Nor were the Midwestern states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio spared by the freezing temperatures.

Parts of Canada were expecting temperatures as low as -58F. An extreme cold advisory issued by Environment Canada on Friday morning blanketed the Maritimes, most of Quebec and all of Ontario, spilling into Manitoba.

In Toronto, the wind chill plunged the temperature to -29C (-20F) on Friday.

Forecasters predict temperatures will rebound by the end of the weekend.

The drop in temperatures is attributed to a powerful Arctic front that stretches from the Canadian maritime provinces to the core of the US.

The brutal winter weather follows this week's deadly ice storm in parts of Texas, where temperatures have begun to climb above freezing, and ice was expected to melt on Friday.

At least 11 people have died in the bad weather in the US south since Monday. There were eight fatalities in Texas, two in Oklahoma and one in Arkansas.

More than 250,000 people were still without power as of Friday night in Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and New York, according to poweroutage.us.
