If you had a flying carpet, where would you go? Childhood readers of One Thousand and One Nights might often have day-dreamed about this question – along with some of us adults – but this prediction of the future is not as outlandish as it once was.

This week US President Donald Trump has been busy tweeting out a "Mars Awaits" logo in support of the US Space Force – one of his pet projects. It is a rare area of agreement between Mr Trump and I – that space travel is exciting and imminent.

It's also the week when the Parkar Space Probe was launched to "touch the sun". And this month we had the announcement of the discovery of water on Mars, suggesting potential life or at least the possibility of sustaining it.

Nasa thinks we could be living on the moon in eight years. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, aims to send a manned mission to Mars by 2024.

The UAE's own Space Agency just turned four years old and an Emirati astronaut will be sent to space next April. Meanwhile, there is talk of an entire colony built by the UAE on Mars by 2117. With medical advances and longer life spans, we could well live to see it.

And while Mr Trump might be concentrating on the branding of future missions, for Muslims contemplating space travel, there are questions of religion, ethics and practicality to be addressed.

Let’s start with that flying carpet. If you’re a Muslim in space, how could you face your prayer mat towards Makkah? This, of course, brings further struggles, how do you prostrate on the ground in the absence of gravity? If you have multiple sunsets in the course of 24 hours how do you know when to pray or in Ramadan, when to fast? Even on earth, the sighting of the moon to declare Eid is a bone of contention.

In fact, there are all sorts of questions about practical rituals. In 2007, Malaysian authorities issued guidance about how their Malaysian astronaut could navigate such dilemmas while on the International Space Station. But expectations of life in space – including the realistic possibility of long term habitation – have come a long way since then. And the questions keep growing.

Different religions will need to dig deep into their theology to tackle the dilemmas their astronauts will face.

Islamic theology is well-suited to support space travel, exploration and habitation. After all, the Quran includes the verse: "All praise belongs to God, Lord of the Worlds." In addition, the Quran dangles the challenge for humanity to cut through the boundaries of inner space and reach other planets and galaxies. It employs imagery that hints at rockets and space travel – but only with Divine permission.

If it’s true that within the next century humanity will be living on Mars, you might want to build a mosque. Experts are already designing homes that can be 3D printed once people arrive on Mars, to save on transportation. I can envisage 3D printed mosques with rotating prayer spaces that constantly adjust themselves to remain pointed at Makkah.

The most fascinating questions will be ethical ones about interactions with other life forms. What’s the right etiquette when you meet a Martian? Could they have a religion? Could you marry one?

In fact, how we manage our morality and rituals in other worlds has long been a fascination for Muslim authors, whose efforts at science fiction stretch all the way back to Ibn Tufail in the 12th century who created a character on an island who came into existence through "spontaneous generation".

In the early 20th century a female Muslim Indian author, Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, used science fiction to depict a world where women were in charge and men were locked indoors, having used technology to change the balance of power. And of course the Arabian Nights also sent Sindbad into new worlds with strange creatures.

But these forms of science fiction and our imaginings about life in outer space aren’t just dreams any longer. To quote from the 1987 hit single Star Trekkin', "it’s life Jim, but not as we know it". The question now is, what will life in space be like for us and the creatures we meet?

Maar nota bene Elon Musk zélf was gekant tegen de "travel ban" van moslims die door Donald Trump uitgevaardigd werd, zie bijvoorbeeld :

Now we know how Elon Musk really feels about the Muslim travel ban

Daaruit :
A series of tweets went out on Musk's Twitter account Wednesday afternoon, decrying the ban on travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries as "not right."

That's a few steps up on the criticism scale from the subtle shade Trump's economic adviser threw at the ban on travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries last month.
Het is daarom niet uitgesloten dat Elon Musk moslims laat meereizen naar Mars in één van zijn starships. In de islamitische olielanden zijn er genoeg moslims die geld genoeg hebben om zo'n reis te kunnen betalen.

China's first fully homegrown Mars mission is on its way to the Red Planet.

The Tianwen-1 mission launched atop a Long March 5 rocket from Hainan Island's Wenchang Satellite Launch Center this morning (July 23) at 12:41 a.m. EDT (0441 GMT).

Tianwen-1 consists of an orbiter and a lander/rover duo, a combination of craft that had never before launched together toward the Red Planet. The ambition of Tianwen-1 is especially striking given that it's China's first stab at a full-on Mars mission. (The nation did launch a Red Planet orbiter called Yinghuo-1 in November 2011, but the spacecraft flew piggyback with Russia's Phobos-Grunt mission. And that launch failed, leaving the probes trapped in Earth orbit.)

"Tianwen-1 is going to orbit, land and release a rover all on the very first try, and coordinate observations with an orbiter," team members wrote in a recent Nature Astronomy paper outlining the mission's main objectives. "No planetary missions have ever been implemented in this way. If successful, it would signify a major technical breakthrough."
Ik vermoed dat China op weg is naar het bouwen van een eigen vloot van "starships" om Mars te koloniseren. In tegenstelling tot Elon Musk zijn ze in China niet zo happig op moslims.

As US private space firm SpaceX chief Elon Musk is eager to colonize Mars first, China has thrown its hat into the ring to be the first, while other players like India and Europe remain spectators to the growing competition.

Ouyang Ziyuan, a scientist from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that China will launch a mission to Mars with Martian satellite, Martian lander, as well as Martian rover, said a report in China Daily. He quickly added that the purpose of the mission is to probe whether Mars is suitable for terraforming so humans can inhabit.

US space agency NASA's plan to send humans to Mars met with funding crunch from the Trump Administration but the US private space agency SpaceX has an ambitious plan already taking final shape. Its Vice President Jonathan Hofeller said the Starship, a space vehicle designed to carry humans to Mars, will make its maiden pilot voyage without humans in 2021.

SpaceX has already performed an initial test of Starship prototype though the vehicle propelled just a few centimeters above the ground. "We have future hops coming up later this year. The goal is to get orbital as quickly as possible, potentially even this year, with the full stack operational by the end of next year and then customers in early 2021," said Hofeller, Space News reports.

Whether Elon Musk or China, the space colonization seeks to fully exploit the planet's resources. Moreover, Mars is preferred to the moon that has no atmosphere or Mercury and Pluto, which have very thin atmosphere.

Mars has an atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide and nitrogen though unfit for human survival, the possibility of transforming the carbon dioxide into oxygen with green plants is on the agenda of future colonisers.

Moreover, Mars has water that may have to be pumped up from the ground. Once water is available, exploration of resources will be easier. Now that Mars has already become the next destination for human space exploration, it remains to be seen whether China's Mars mission or SpaceX's Spaceship take up the conquest on the Red Planet first.

At least 110 humans wold be needed to set up a civilisation on Mars, a scientific study has found.

The study, carried out by Professor Jean-Marc Salotti at the Bordeaux Institut National Polytechnique in France, has discovered that the minimum population would be needed to help make tools and commodities before supplies run out.

The colony would have to live in an oxygen-filled dome and begin their own agriculture industry if they were to sustain life on the red planet.

Professor Jean-Marc Salotti made the prediction after using a mathematical model to determine 'the feasibility of survival on another planet'.

He said: 'What is the feasibility of survival on another planet and being self-sustaining?

'This question is of particular importance for the future of space conquest and perhaps also for the future of humanity in general.

'I show here that a mathematical model can be used to determine the minimum number of settlers and the way of life for survival on another planet, using Mars as the example.

'It is based on the comparison between the time requirements to implement all kinds of human activities for long term survival and the available time of the settlers.

'An important parameter of the model is called the sharing factor, which allows some reduction of time requirements per individual if, for example, the activity concerns the construction of an object that can be shared by several individuals.

'For survival on Mars, some assumptions are made for the organisation of the settlers and engineering issues.

'The minimum number of settlers has been calculated and the result is 110 individuals.'

The Bordeaux Institut National Polytechnique expert says survival depends on access to natural resources and people's working time requirements being less than their working time capacity.

He went on to explain that he also assumed that support from Earth had been cut off due to war, a lack of resources, or the settlers declaring an independent Martian republic.

His factors are the number of settlers, what living conditions are acceptable, the main engineering choices for agriculture, industry and life support, and how resources would be shared and organised.

The findings come after the US billionaire Elon Musk revealed he would be pumping money into his SpaceX programme in hope of one day colonising Mars.

He recently sent the first commercial rocket carrying astronauts to the international space station.

‘Halfway to Mars’ – Mars Society Releases New Song Celebrating Humanity’s Recent Achievements in Space

August 6, 2020

In light of recent achievements in space and our continued efforts as a species to get humans on to the surface of the Red Planet, the Mars Society is thrilled to release an inspiring new song, 'Halfway to Mars', that celebrates the work of the pioneers of Mars and hopes to inspire all of us to strive even harder.

The idea for the song came about three months into the COVID-19 lockdown, when opera singer Oscar Castellino, in a chat with musician Linda Shanson in London, realized that they could be halfway to Mars if their home that they were confined to was an actual spaceship. The journey to Mars in terms of duration didn’t seem so difficult after all!

Check out (and share) the official release of the song on the Mars Society Youtube channel:

The lyrics go:

Innovation, Expedition,

This is what we breathe,

On a mission, past ignition

Meteoric speed!

Sailing through the distant ether,

Like a shooting star,

Breaking limits,

Lifting spirits,

This is who we are!

Living a life among the stars

and finding what life is all about,

Spreading the wonders of the earth far out.

We are Halfway to Mars (3)

and going on ...

Put to test every skill,

Past the highest hill.

We are Halfway to Mars and going on ...

Boca Chica to Africa,

All of earthly kind.

Indiana to India,

With a goal in mind.

On a quest to give the best to

Generations on ...

Breaking limits,

Lifting spirits,

This is why we're born!

Living a life among the stars

and finding what life is all about,

Spreading the wonders of the earth far out.

We are Halfway to Mars (3)

and going on ...

Put to test every skill,

Past the highest hill.

We are Halfway to Mars (3)

and going on ... !

Mr. Castellino says he wrote this song inspired by space pioneers like Elon Musk and Robert Zubrin.

Charlotte Edwards, Digital Technology and Science Reporter, 23 Oct 2020, 12:58

Elon Musk is hoping to build a city on the Red Planet and knows the space colony will probably want to get online.

In a recent interview with TIME magazine, SpaceX president and COO Gwynne Shotwell revealed the Mars plans.

Shotwell said: "Once we take people to Mars, they're going to need a capability to communicate."

"In fact I think it will be even more critical to have a constellation like Starlink around Mars."

She also stressed that Mars and Earth will need to be connected.

Shotwell added: "And then of course you need to connect the two planets as well, so we make sure we have robust telecom between Mars and back on Earth."

That would mean Mars and Earth would have some kind of internet bridge between them.

The SpaceX COO also explained that the company isn't giving up on Earth just because it wants to aim for Mars.

She said it wants to give "humanity another shot in case there were to be some horrible event on Earth".

Musk founded SpaceX with the aim of putting humans on other planets.

He previously said his Starship rocket – currently in testing – will one day ferry Earthlings to Mars.

And he's said he'll need a fleet of 1,000 ships to create a sustainable city, as orbits mean the trip is only viable once every two years.

Musk previously vowed to put a million people on Mars by 2050.

According to Musk, SpaceX aims to build 1,000 Starships at a facility in South Texas over a 10-year period.

That's 100 rockets per year – a pretty tall feat considering the firm hasn't built a single functioning Starship yet.

Eventually, the Tesla boss added, the goal would be to launch 1,000 Starship flights to Mars every year – an average of three per day.

Each trip would see 100 passengers make their way to the Red Planet to become citizens of a Mars megacity.
