China released the latest images of its Mars rover on Monday, the 100th day of Zhu Rong's operation on the red planet.

The pictures released by the China National Space Administration showed the route of the rover, which had travelled more than 1km south from the landing platform by Monday. The photos were taken by the Tianwen-1 orbiter on Tuesday last week.

The space agency said the rover would head towards the boundary between the ancient sea and land in the south of Utopia Planitia, a large plain in the northern hemisphere, to collect data.

It added that the distance between the Earth and Mars was approaching its furthest, at about 395 million kilometres (245 million miles).

The orbiter and rover will pause their exploration in mid-to-late September, when communications are interrupted as the sun comes between Mars and Earth, according to CNSA.

The period is known as Mars solar conjunction, when Mars and Earth are on opposite sides of the sun, almost in a line.

After that, the orbiter will attempt to conduct remote sensing exploration of Mars, while serving as a communication relay station between Zhu Rong and Earth.

Meanwhile, the People's Bank of China launched a set of commemorative coins on Monday to mark the success of the country's first Mars exploration mission.

Zhu Rong is part of the Tianwen-1 mission, China's first independent Mars exploration mission.

The rover lifted off from southern China just over a year ago along with a lander and an orbiter to relay information to and from Earth.

It entered Mars' orbit in February before touching down three months later.

The mission is part of China's ambition to retrieve samples from Mars in 2030 and send crews to the planet for exploration in 2033.

The Zhu Rong is not alone on Mars – Nasa's Curiosity and Perseverance rovers are also working on the planet.

China is the third country to land on the planet after the United States and the Soviet Union.

So far the United States has landed successfully on Mars eight times. The Soviet Union was the first to achieve the feat in 1971, but the lander soon stopped communicating and the federation's subsequent attempts all failed.

China's efforts to explore Mars date back to 2011 with the launch of the Yinghuo-1 mission involving a Mars probe attached to a Russian spacecraft.

But the spacecraft was stranded in orbit and ended up being lost before crashing into the Pacific Ocean the following year.

China has been trying to catch up with the US in space technology and is making progress with several space-related programmes.

Three astronauts are in orbit building China's own space station, the Tiangong, which is expected to be completed next year.

The International Space Station developed by the US, Russia and other countries is ageing and approaching the end of its intended life in 2024.

The habitability of Mars is limited by its small size, according to new research by Washington University in St. Louis planetary scientists.

"Mars' fate was decided from the beginning," said senior author Dr. Kun Wang, a researcher in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

"There is likely a threshold on the size requirements of rocky planets to retain enough water to enable habitability and plate tectonics, with mass exceeding that of Mars."

In the study, Dr. Wang and colleagues used stable isotopes of potassium to estimate the presence, distribution and abundance of volatile elements on different planetary bodies.

They decided to use potassium as a kind of tracer for more volatile elements and compounds, such as water.

This is a relatively new method that diverges from previous attempts to use potassium-to-thorium ratios gathered by remote sensing and chemical analysis to determine the amount of volatiles Mars once had.

The researchers measured the potassium isotope compositions of 20 previously confirmed Martian meteorites, selected to be representative of the bulk silicate composition of the Red Planet.

Using this approach, they determined that Mars lost more potassium and other volatiles than Earth during its formation, but retained more of these volatiles than the Moon and asteroid 4 Vesta, two much smaller and drier bodies than Earth and Mars.

They found a well-defined correlation between body size and potassium isotopic composition.

"The reason for far lower abundances of volatile elements and their compounds in differentiated planets than in primitive undifferentiated meteorites has been a longstanding question," said co-author Dr. Katharina Lodders, also from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

"The finding of the correlation of potassium isotopic compositions with planet gravity is a novel discovery with important quantitative implications for when and how the differentiated planets received and lost their volatiles."

"Martian meteorites are the only samples available to us to study the chemical makeup of the bulk Mars," Dr. Wang said.

"Those Martian meteorites have ages varying from several hundred millions to 4 billion years and recorded Mars' volatile evolution history."

"Through measuring the isotopes of moderately volatile elements, such as potassium, we can infer the degree of volatile depletion of bulk planets and make comparisons between different solar system bodies."

"It's indisputable that there used to be liquid water on the surface of Mars, but how much water in total Mars once had is hard to quantify through remote sensing and rover studies alone," Dr. Wang said.

"There are many models out there for the bulk water content of Mars. In some of them, early Mars was even wetter than the Earth. We don't believe that was the case."

The study appears today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Tests are underway on a rocket technology that could vastly shorten the time it takes for humans to get to Mars, greatly reducing the risk of mechanical failures and other deadly space hazards on future Mars-bound astronauts.

Costa Rica and U.S.-based Ad Astra Rocket Company announced over the summer that it had completed a record 88-hour high-power endurance test of its Vasimr VX-200SS plasma rocket at 80 kW. The test, conducted at the company's Texas laboratory near Houston, constituted a new high-power world endurance record in electric propulsion.

'Years of trial-and-error testing' for Vasimr rocket
"The test is a major success, the culmination of years of trial-and-error testing and painstaking attention to detail and a handsome reward for the team's tenacity and dedication," said Franklin R. Chang Díaz, Ad Astra's chairman and CEO, who flew on seven separate missions as a NASA astronaut, logging 1,601 hours in space.

The Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (Vasimr) rocket was designed to fly with an engine that uses nuclear reactors to heat plasma to two million degrees. Hot gas is then channeled, via magnetic fields, out of the back of the engine to propel it, in theory, at speeds of up to 123,000 mph (197,950 km/h). The goal for Ad Astra is to make much faster, but also much safer spaceflight possible — despite the fact that Vasimr rockets would send nuclear reactors hurtling through space at incredible speeds. Though Vasimr launch vehicles will still require chemical rockets to reach orbit, once there, the plasma engine (described in the video below) will be engaged, greatly improving the safety of the crew, according to the company.

Four times faster than existing chemical rockets
In the seven months NASA estimates it would take to fly humans to Mars, any number of catastrophic failures could occur. That's why Díaz said in a 2010 interview with Popular Science that "chemical rockets are not going to get us to Mars. It's just too long a trip." A conventional rocket must use its entire fuel supply in a single controlled explosion during launch before propelling itself towards Mars. There is no abort procedure, the ship will not be able to change course, and if any failure occurred, mission control would have a 10-minute communications delay, meaning they could find themselves helplessly watching on as the crew slowly dies.

Ad Astra's plasma rocket Vasimr, on the other hand, will sustain propulsion throughout the journey to the red planet. It will accelerate gradually until it reaches a maximum speed of 34 miles (54 km) per second by the twenty-third day, making it four times faster than any existing chemical rocket. This would reduce that estimated seven-month journey by approximately six months. Less time traveling through space means less exposure to solar radiation — a recent study states that Mars missions should not exceed four years for crew safety — less risk of mechanical failures, and less of a health risk due to the muscle atrophy effects of zero-gravity. As the ship's plasma engine can provide propulsion at any time, it could also change course if required.

Following Ad Astra's successful plasma rocket endurance test in July, the company announced its plans for the future. "With a new set of engine modifications already in the manufacturing stage, we'll now move to demonstrate thermal steady state at 100 kW in the second half of 2021," Díaz said in Ad Astra's press release. Other firms such as DARPA are also developing nuclear-powered rockets — the Pentagon agency announced this year that it wants to demonstrate a nuclear thermal propulsion system above low Earth orbit in 2025. Spaceflight looks like it's on course to go nuclear, in a move that would greatly enhance humanity's capacity to launch to unexplored regions of our universe.

By Fan Anqi, Oct 22, 2021 03:42 PM

China's Zhurong Mars rover - the country's first deep-space probe exploring the Red Planet - has once again embarked on its trek of scientific exploration after safely surviving almost a month of solar outage, during which time the probe lost contact with the Earth and relied on its own smart autonomous systems.

The successful "survival" of Zhurong, as well as the valuable data acquired during this period, which has been a first in China's aerospace history, is invaluable experience for future deep-space missions, including that to Jupiter and the Mars sample retrieving mission, experts noted.

The good news came on Friday from China National Space Administration's China Lunar Exploration Project, announcing that Tianwen-1 Mars orbiter and Zhurong rover will continue with its scientific exploration after a safe passage through a period of solar outage.

In late September, the communication between the probe and the Earth began experiencing blackouts due to disturbances caused by the Sun's radiation, which was caused by a phenomenon known as solar outage when the Earth and Mars fall on either side of the Sun in alomost a straight line.

The loss of contact with the remote voyager worried many Chinese netizens, whose fears and anticipations struggled just like any parents seeing off their children to a faraway land - concerned by the unknown while also having faith in its capabilities.

To ensure the probe's safety during the "blackout," ground control team has suspended its exploration tasks and prepared a slew of measures, such as setting up in advance an autonomous working state and laying out possible conditions that it may encounter and their solutions, so that it can scrape off risks beforehand.

The probe also has the ability to control its own operating system, and can remain self-guiding during any solar outage period, resuming communication with the ground once the period is over.

While communication links are blocked, Chinese research fellows were able to track and observe the orbiter and rover's status, and acquired some valuable first-hand data with the help of many international institutions from Europe, Australia, Russia, and South Africa.

Jiao Weixin, a space science professor at Peking University, believed the experience has tested China's deep-space exploration capabilities in both maintaining the probe's safety while also continuing its observation when ground control is unable to support the expedition.

"Solar outage is a common phenomenon when we explore celestial bodies in the solar system, especially with Mars and other celestial bodies close to the Sun. The successful experience on our country's first try has fully demonstrated our extensive preparation work, which will further help China's future deep-space missions, including that to Jupiter," Jiao told the Global Times on Friday.

Pang Zhihao, a Beijing-based space expert and retired researcher from the China Academy of Space Technology, told the Global Times on Friday that with the successful Moon sample retrieving mission of Chang'e-5 and the Tianwen-1 mission which withstood multiple challenges in one go, a Mars sample retrieving mission can be expected in the next few years, around 2028 to 2030.

During its next chapter, Zhurong will continue on its adventure on the Red Planet and travel south of the landing site to an area of suspected mud volcanoes detected by the Tianwen-1 orbiter.

The area has not been closely examined before by any other country with many believing it could contain evidence of the existence of water or life, which could have been brought out of the ground through eruptions of the mud volcanoes, Jiao said.

Launched on July 23, 2020 and landing on the Martian surface on May 15 this year, China's Tianwen-1 orbiter has been in orbit for over 450 days. The Zhurong rover has also worked for more than 150 days, greatly exceeding its expected lifespan of 90 days.

Elon Musk said SpaceX will land humans on Mars with its Starship rocket in 10 years' time, in the worst-case scenario.

During an episode of the Lex Fridman Podcast released on Tuesday, Fridman asked Musk when he thinks SpaceX will land human beings on the Red Planet.

After a 20-second pause, the billionaire replied: "Best case is about five years, worst case 10 years."

Musk told Fridman that the determining factors included "engineering the vehicle," adding that "Starship is the most complex and advanced rocket that's ever been made."

"The fundamental optimization of Starship is minimizing the cost per ton to orbit and ultimately cost per ton to the surface of Mars," Musk told Fridman on the podcast.

Currently, nobody can fly to Mars for one trillion dollars, Musk told Fridman. "No amount of money can get you a ticket to Mars," he said on the podcast.

The SpaceX and Tesla CEO has forecasted various dates for his company reaching and landing on the Red Planet.

Musk said in an interview on the audio app Clubhouse in February that it will take "five and a half years" before a crewed mission of SpaceX's Starship rocket could land on the Red Planet.

Musk tweeted in March that his aerospace company would land its Starship rockets on Mars "well before" 2030.

Experts previously told Insider that it could take longer than he's predicting if things don't go exactly to plan during the three remaining launch opportunities before 2026.

Musk eventually plans to build 1,000 Starship rockets and launch three of them a day to fly one million people to the Red Planet.

Europe's Mars rover 'very unlikely' to launch in 2022

The rover project was first approved in 2005

It's "very unlikely" the British-built Mars rover, Rosalind Franklin, will launch this year.

The European Space Agency (Esa) says the project is now at risk because of the worsening diplomatic crisis over the war in Ukraine.

The robot is part of a joint venture with the Russian space agency.

It's due to launch on a Russian rocket in September and land eight months later using Russian hardware, but this cooperation may now be hard to justify.

Esa said in a statement on Monday that "sanctions and the wider context" had put a big question mark next to Rosalind Franklin, which is named after the British scientist who co-discovered the structure of DNA.

"We deplore the human casualties and tragic consequences of the war in Ukraine," the agency stated.

"We are giving absolute priority to taking proper decisions, not only for the sake of our workforce involved in the programmes, but in full respect of our European values, which have always fundamentally shaped our approach to international cooperation."

At the weekend, the Russian space agency Roscosmos announced it would be suspending flights of its Soyuz rockets from the European Kourou spaceport in French Guiana, as retaliation for EU economic sanctions.

The aspiration is that space sits well above any conflicts happening on Earth below. And for decades, Russia and the West have found room to co-operate, even when tensions were high during the Cold War and Crimea crisis.

But the invasion of Ukraine marks a turning point, and the idea of continuing business as usual in the skies above has become harder to contemplate. However, untangling decades of cooperation will not be easy.

If the ExoMars programme is suspended, does this mean the spacecraft is put in storage and then wheeled back out again for launch once the crisis comes to an end? Or does it mean the elements that Roscosmos have made - the landing system - are redesigned and rebuilt without Russia's involvement?

These sorts of questions will be being asked right now for every western mission involving Russia.

The trickiest problem though is the International Space Station. The infrastructure on the orbiting outpost is so entwined that Russia would struggle to operate there without the other space agencies - and vice versa. It may be that the ISS remains a beacon of space cooperation - because there is no alternative.

Rosalind Franklin has only a limited time to launch to Mars this year - just a short, 10-day window in late September and early October.

This narrowness is governed by the alignment of the planets.

If the robot misses the window, it must wait another 26 months before getting another go.

The rover itself is built, as is its Russian descent and landing mechanism, known as Kazachok. Some technical issues still need to be resolved, but there is every confidence the pair could reach the launch pad in time - given the opportunity.

In the current climate, however, the sentiment is not positive.

In the UK's House of Commons last week, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson said space cooperation with Russia was difficult to justify.

"I must say that hitherto I have been broadly in favour of continuing artistic and scientific collaboration but in the current circumstances, it's hard to see how even those can continue as normal," he told MPs.

Rosalind Franklin is the second stage in a two-part space programme known formally as ExoMars.

The first part is a satellite that was launched to the Red Planet in 2016. It is studying the planet's atmosphere and is due to act as a telecommunications relay platform for Rosalind Franklin when it arrives.

Within Esa, the UK has been the second largest contributor to the ExoMars programme (behind Italy), having invested over €300m (£250m), with most of that geared towards leading the development of the rover.

Another non-Russian rocket could be found to launch the robot in 2024, but sourcing western hardware to place the vehicle on the surface of the planet might not be so straightforward.

The expertise exists in Europe - and especially in the US - to build such a descent and landing system, but it would surely take more than two years to design, build and test, meaning Rosalind Franklin would be pushed even further into the future.

This would inevitably lead some to question its continuing relevance as a scientific endeavour.

The robot's objective is to drill up to 2m into the ground to look for traces of life. No other planned Mars mission has this goal.

Esa's desire to send a six-wheeled vehicle to the Red Planet is a long-running saga.

The idea was first approved by member states as far back as 2005, with a launch pencilled in for 2011.

Indecision, technical woes and funding shortfalls subsequently saw the project miss launch window after launch window.

Neither the UK Space Agency nor Airbus UK, who assembled Rosalind Franklin, wanted to add to Esa's Monday statement.

N° 9–2022: ExoMars suspended

17 March 2022

As an intergovernmental organisation mandated to develop and implement space programmes in full respect with European values, we deeply deplore the human casualties and tragic consequences of the aggression towards Ukraine. While recognising the impact on scientific exploration of space, ESA is fully aligned with the sanctions imposed on Russia by its Member States.

ExoMars

ESA’s ruling Council, meeting in Paris on 16-17 March, assessed the situation arising from the war in Ukraine regarding ExoMars, and unanimously:

acknowledged the present impossibility of carrying out the ongoing cooperation with Roscosmos on the ExoMars rover mission with a launch in 2022, and mandated the ESA Director General to take appropriate steps to suspend the cooperation activities accordingly;
authorised the ESA Director General to carry out a fast-track industrial study to better define the available options for a way forward to implement the ExoMars rover mission.
[...]
Following the decision by Roscosmos to withdraw their personnel from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, all missions scheduled for launch by Soyuz have been put on hold. These concern essentially four institutional missions for which ESA is the launch service procurement entity (Galileo M10, Galileo M11, Euclid and EarthCare) and one additional institutional launch.

China aims to bring Mars samples to Earth 2 years before NASA, ESA mission

by Andrew Jones — June 20, 2022

HELSINKI — China's Mars sample return mission aims to collect samples from the Red Planet and deliver them to Earth in 2031, or two years ahead of a NASA and ESA joint mission.

Sun Zezhou, chief designer of the Tianwen-1 Mars orbiter and rover mission, presented a new mission profile for China's Mars sample return during a June 20 presentation in which he outlined plans for a two-launch profile, lifting off in late 2028 and delivering samples to Earth in July 2031.

The complex, multi-launch mission will have simpler architecture in comparison with the joint NASA-ESA project, with a single Mars landing and no rovers sampling different sites.

However, if successful, it would deliver to Earth the first collected Martian samples; an objective widely noted as one the major scientific goals of space exploration.

In March, NASA announced plans to delay the next phase of its Mars Sample Return campaign and split a lander mission into two separate spacecraft to reduce the overall risk of the program.

ESA's Earth Return Orbiter would launch in 2027, and the samples would return to Earth in 2033 under the revised schedule.

China's mission, named Tianwen-3, will consist of two combinations: a lander and ascent vehicle, and an orbiter and return module. The combinations will launch separately on Long March 5 and Long March 3B rockets respectively.

Earlier statements on the mission suggested using a single future Long March 9 super heavy-lift rocket.

The mission will build on the Mars entry, descent and landing technologies and techniques demonstrated by Tianwen-1 in May 2021, as well as the regolith sampling, automated lunar orbit rendezvous and docking, and high velocity atmospheric reentry success achieved by the 2020 Chang'e-5 lunar sample return mission.

Sun presented the mission profile at a deep space exploration technology forum, also part of a seminar series marking the 120th anniversary of Nanjing University.

Landing on Mars would take place around September 2029. Sampling techniques will include surface sampling, drilling and mobile intelligent sampling, potentially using a four-legged robot.

The ascent vehicle will consist of two stages, using either solid or liquid propulsion, and will be required to reach a speed of 4.5 kilometers per second, according to the presentation.

After rendezvous and docking with the waiting orbiter, the spacecraft will depart Mars orbit in late October 2030 for a return to Earth in July 2031.

Sun added that the Tianwen-1 orbiter will conduct an aerobraking test in Mars orbit later this year as part of the sample return mission preparation.

The technological complexity and requirements for autonomy represent some of the major challenges for the mission.

Another noted aspect will be that the landing would take place around the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere, in which the mission will likely land. Related difficulties include potential sand storms and low solar energy availability.

China's Mars sample return mission appears to have backing from the relevant top space and government authorities.

The country's ambition to carry out the unprecedented mission has been stated previously and was included in the China National Space Administration’s plans for development across 2021-2025.

Completing "key technological research on Mars sampling and return" was noted as an objective for the same period in a government space white paper released in January.

The sample return will follow two missions. Tianwen-1 launched in July 2020, sending an orbiter and rover to Mars, was the country's first independent interplanetary mission.

Tianwen-2 will be a near-Earth asteroid sampling mission which will also visit a main belt comet. Current plans indicate a launch in 2025.

Fish and Wildlife Service.
