If you ask an audience whether they think the global rate of change is faster today than it was a decade ago you, like I, will find that almost all of them think it is. Furthermore, if you ask them whether they think the rate of change in another decade's time will be faster, the same, or slower, than it is today, then again the vast majority of them will answer "faster."

In fact, putting a statistic on it, when I ask the audiences I present to around the world this very question ordinarily over 98 percent of them feel things today are changing faster than in the past and that that rate is only going to accelerate, with only a very few of them either sitting on the fence or disagreeing.

Putting this into context, at the start of this millennium, for example, smartphones as we know them didn't exist, and just three decades before that hardly anyone owned a computer. And as for the internet? Well, in 1983 that was still pretty much just a pseudo-military experiment in an American lab.

When you think about technology in this way it's staggering to see just how far we've come in such short period of time and within just a couple of generations. Fast forwards to today and billions of people have a handheld supercomputer that, in one Reddit user's words, "puts all the world's information at their fingertips." And much more.

So, intuitively at least, we can be forgiven for thinking that technology is progressing faster than ever. But is it really or is this accelerating rate of change just a figment of our collective imaginations?

Well, as it turns out the rate of technology development is absolutely accelerating, and in this article I'm going to explore the driving forces behind this change and the surprising implications of technology's acceleration.

MOORE'S LAW ISN'T THE EXCEPTION
Ever since the first computer chip came onto the market back in 1965 they've become increasingly powerful while costing less and giving you more bang for your buck. That's because over the last five decades or so the number of transistors, or the tiny electrical components that perform basic computing operations, on a single chip have been doubling approximately every two years.

This exponential doubling, coined Moore's Law after Graham Moore who first observed it, is the reason why today's smartphones can pack more power than a 1990's supercomputer into such a small package.

While computer chip's technological progress is well documented surprisingly when it comes to exponential technologies computer chips aren't a special case, a range of other technologies demonstrate similar exponential growth – whether it's the amount of data that can be stored on a computer hard drive, or now flash storage, and tomorrow in atoms, DNA and molecules, or the speed at which we can sequence strands of DNA.

Irrespective of the technology though the outcome is the same, their functionality and performance have increased by thousands, millions, and even billions fold, for much less cost within just a few scant decades.

So, what's going on here? Well, this is where a new law conveniently called the Law of Accelerating Returns comes into play.

According to the law the pace of technological progress speeds up exponentially over time because there is a common force driving it forward. Being exponential, as it turns out, is all about evolution.

LESSONS FROM EVOLUTION
Let's begin with biology, a familiar evolutionary process. Biology is highly adept at honing "natural technologies" so to speak – after all as we keep getting told today DNA is just "the software of life," and just look at how we're manipulating it in new and incredible ways. Recorded within the DNA of living things are blueprints of useful tools known as genes, and due to selective pressure, or "Survival of the fittest," advantageous innovations are passed along to offspring.

As this process plays out generation after generation across the eons, chaotically yet incrementally, incredible growth takes place. By building on genetic progress rather than starting over from scratch every time organisms have increased in complexity and capability over time, and this innovative power is evident everywhere we look on Earth today – from the frigid Arctic to the scorching Sarah.

Biology's many innovations include bones, brains, cells, eyes, and thumbs, and from thumbs and brains, technology. According to some technology is also an evolutionary process, like biology, only it moves from one invention to the next much faster, in most cases exponentially faster.

It's plain for all to see that civilisations themselves advance by re-purposing the ideas and breakthroughs of their predecessors, from the Aztecs and Egyptians, and the Mayans to modern society. Similarly, each generation of technology builds on the advances of previous generations creating a positive feedback loop of continuous improvement, meaning that each successive generation of technology is superior to the last.

Additionally, because each generation of technology improves over the last the rate of progress from generation to generation, and also within generations, speeds up. Imagine for example having to design and produce a simple chair, in the past a human designer would design it and a craftsman would build it. Fast forwards in time and those craftsmen were replaced with automated factory production lines, and then fast forwards again and those same chairs are now designed by AI's and 3D printed on demand in just a fraction of a time it used to take. And in the future they could be assembled by molecular assemblers.

This acceleration can be measured in terms of the "returns" of the technology, such as its efficiency, functionality, price-performance, and overall "power," many of which, if not all of which, improve exponentially as well.

Furthermore, as exponential technology becomes more capable it attracts more attention, including increased investment and R&D, and new developer ecosystems, all of which further accelerate its development. Then, once it's commercialised the development process accelerates yet again as all of a sudden billions of people have the opportunity to develop it and innovate on top of it.

It's this tsunami of new focus, funding, and resources which then triggers a second wave of exponential growth, where the rate of exponential growth is effectively boosted, and then we see the rate of acceleration itself accelerating.

All that said though an individual technology's exponential growth rate will never last forever because it's almost impossible to keep those kinds of gains up ad infinitum so these technologies grow until they've exhausted their growth potential, at which point they become superseded by a new exponential technology.

For example, in the case of computers and Moore's Law this means moving from silicon based computer platforms to new biological, chemical, DNA, liquid, neuromorphic, photonic, and quantum computing platforms – all of which are many hundreds of millions times more powerful than today's computers.

SURPRISING IMPLICATIONS
As for the implications of all this fury the net result is that overall our rate of technological progress is doubling every decade now, which in layman's terms means that in the next 100 years we won't experience 100 years or progress we'll experience over 20,000 years worth. And that's at today's rates, bearing in mind that today's rate, as we've discussed, is itself accelerating.

The consequence of all this suggests that the horizons for amazingly powerful technologies may be closer than we realise, whether they be in the form of self-evolving AI's and self-learning robots, or the development of human supercomputers, space based power stations, and space colonies. And as for science fiction, well, for the most part, from holograms and molecular assemblers to light sabres and tractor beams, it's all already science fact.

So, rounding this out, is technology progressing faster than ever? Are the things we can achieve with it increasingly out of this world? Absolutely, and the ride's only just beginning – welcome to the Exponential Era.

Zuiver silicium vervangt koolstof

German automotive supplier Continental set up a supercomputer for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate the development of innovative mobility technologies, the company announced on Tuesday.

"AI enhances advanced driver assistance systems, makes mobility smarter and safer and accelerates the development of systems for autonomous driving," the firm noted.

The supercomputer, which was among the 500 most powerful computers in the world, was operating from a data center in Frankfurt am Main in Germany since the beginning of the year and used technology from the U.S. company NVIDIA, according to Continental.

"The supercomputer is an investment in our future," said Christian Schumacher, head of program management systems in Continental's advanced driver assistance systems business unit.

Continental's fleet of test cars was currently traveling around 15,000 kilometers per day, generating around 100 terabytes of data, equivalent to 50,000 hours of movies, the German company noted.

"The state-of-the-art system reduces the time to train neural networks, as it allows for at least 14 times more experiments to be run at the same time," added Schumacher.

One task of the supercomputer was to evaluate the data collected by the test cars. According to Continental, the information was used to train a neural network that would in future mimic the way the human brain works to "assist a driver or even operate a vehicle autonomously."

July 29th, 2020, by National University of Singapore

Engineers have developed an artificial brain system with touch and vision sensors to make a smarter robot.

Picking up a can of soft drink may be a simple task for humans, but this is a complex task for robots. It has to locate the object, deduce its shape, determine the right amount of strength to use, and grasp the object without letting it slip.

Most of today's robots operate solely based on visual processing, which limits their capabilities. In order to perform more complex tasks, robots need an exceptional sense of touch and the ability to process sensory information quickly and intelligently.

The new sensory integrated artificial brain system mimics biological neural networks, and can run on a power-efficient neuromorphic processor, such as Intel's Loihi chip.

The system also integrates artificial skin and vision sensors, equipping robots with the ability to draw accurate conclusions about the objects they are grasping based on the data the vision and touch sensors capture in real-time.

Fast and accurate sensing
"The field of robotic manipulation has made great progress in recent years," says Benjamin Tee, assistant professor in the materials science and engineering department at the National University of Singapore.

"However, fusing both vision and tactile information to provide a highly precise response in milliseconds remains a technology challenge. Our recent work combines our ultra-fast electronic skins and nervous systems with the latest innovations in vision sensing and AI for robots so that they can become smarter and more intuitive in physical interactions," he says.

Enabling a human-like sense of touch in robotics could significantly improve current functionality, and even lead to new uses. For example, on the factory floor, robotic arms fitted with electronic skins could easily adapt to different items, using tactile sensing to identify and grip unfamiliar objects with the right amount of pressure to prevent slipping.

For the new robotic system, the researchers applied an advanced artificial skin called asynchronous coded electronic skin, which Tee and colleagues developed in 2019. The sensor detects touches more than 1,000 times faster than the human sensory nervous system and can also identify the shape, texture, and hardness of objects 10 times faster than the blink of an eye.

"Making an ultra-fast artificial skin sensor solves about half the puzzle of making robots smarter. They also need an artificial brain that can ultimately achieve perception and learning as another critical piece in the puzzle," says Tee.

Another puzzle piece for smart robots
To break new ground in robotic perception, the researchers explored neuromorphic technology—an area of computing that emulates the neural structure and operation of the human brain—to process sensory data from the artificial skin.

As Tee and colleague Harold Soh, an assistant professor in the computer science department, are members of the Intel Neuromorphic Research Community, they say it was a natural choice to use Intel's Loihi neuromorphic research chip for their new robotic system.

In the initial experiments, the researchers fitted a robotic hand with the artificial skin, and used it to read Braille, passing the tactile data to Loihi via the cloud to convert the micro bumps the hand felt into a semantic meaning. Loihi achieved over 92% accuracy in classifying the Braille letters, while using 20 times less power than a normal microprocessor.

Soh's team combined both vision and touch data in a spiking neural network to improve the robot's perception capabilities. In their experiments, the researchers tasked a robot equipped with both artificial skin and vision sensors to classify various opaque containers containing differing amounts of liquid. They also tested the system's ability to identify rotational slip, which is important for stable grasping.

In both tests, the spiking neural network that used both vision and touch data was able to classify objects and detect object slippage. The classification was 10% more accurate than a system that used only vision. Moreover, using a technique Soh's team developed, the neural networks could classify the sensory data while it was being accumulated, unlike the conventional approach where data is classified after it has been fully gathered.

In addition, the researchers demonstrated the efficiency of neuromorphic technology: Loihi processed the sensory data 21% faster than a top performing graphics processing unit, while using more than 45 times less power.

"We're excited by these results," Soh says. "They show that a neuromorphic system is a promising piece of the puzzle for combining multiple sensors to improve robot perception. It's a step towards building power-efficient and trustworthy robots that can respond quickly and appropriately in unexpected situations."

Moving forward, Tee and Soh plan to further develop their novel robotic system for applications in the logistics and food manufacturing industries where there is a high demand for robotic automation, especially moving forward in the post-COVID era.

The researchers presented the findings at the Robotics: Science and Systems conference in July 2020.

The National Robotics R&D Programme Office funded the work.

Aanraken touchscreen auto is onderweg verboden volgens Duitse rechtbank

In a significant advance in the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the Brain Simulator II neural simulator successfully tested one billion neurons on a desktop computer comprised completely of off-the-shelf components. From a performance perspective, the system processed three billion synapses per second. Brain Simulator II is an open-source software platform for proving the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) to AGI.

Seen as another step toward creating brain-level functionality on computers, the spiking neural models used by the Brain Simulator II are more like biological neurons than traditional AI models and contribute immensely to the efficiency of the program. The computer used for this achievement included an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X CPU running at 2.9Ghz (not overclocked) and 128 Gigabytes of RAM.

Energy analysis of the neocortex (the higher-level thinking part of the brain) shows that neurons spike on average, only once every six seconds. This means that its 16 billion neurons generate only 2.5 billion spikes per second in total. The Brain Simulator's spiking neural model only processes neurons which spike in a specific time interval, rather than processing all of them, and so can be thousands of times faster than traditional artificial neural networks.

"This machine exceeds the processing performance of the human neocortex," says Charles Simon, CEO of FutureAI, and principal author of the Brain Simulator II. "The CPU alone contains nearly 40 billion transistors and each transistor is nearly a billion times faster than each of the neocortex's 16 billion neurons."

The number of synapses (which connect signals between neurons) is the key to estimating relative performance. While the human brain has thousands of synapses for each neuron, most are either redundant or "synapses-in-waiting"—synapses which could represent memories should the need arise. These extraneous synapses are not necessary to the simulation. Depending on the number of synapses used for the estimate, the current simulation ranges from being more capable than the neocortex to perhaps a hundred times slower (easily overcome with a few racks of servers).

Although less efficient traditional AI approaches will still need huge computational resources, spiking neural models open the door to a new era of AGI development. The Brain Simulator II was developed to address problems fundamental to all of AI—problems any three-year-old can solve but no AI can. This includes comprehension that objects exist in a physical reality, knowing the basic physics that objects fall down, not up, round ones roll but square ones don't, and understanding the passage of time that blocks must be stacked before the stack can be knocked down.

By eliminating the limitation of computer power, research in new AGI directions will proceed much faster with AGI expected by the end of the decade.

Singapore researchers have a terahertz (THz) wave chip that can transmit at a data rate of 11 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s). It is capable of supporting real-time streaming of 4K high-definition video and passes the theoretical limit of 10 Gbit/s for 5G wireless communications.

The small silicon chip has rows of triangular holes. The small triangles pointing in the opposite direction to larger triangles, light waves become "topologically protected".

This all-silicon chip demonstrated it could transmit signals error-free while routing THz waves around 10 sharp corners at a rate of 11 gigabits per second. It gets around any material defects that may have been introduced in the silicon manufacturing process.

This technology could be the basis for next generation '6G' communications with terabytes-per-second speed (10 to 100 times faster than 5G) in the future.

THz interconnect technology will be used for data centres, IOT devices, massive multicore CPUs (computing chips) and long-range communications, including telecommunications and wireless communication such as Wi-Fi.

19 Aug 2020 | Military.com | By Matthew Cox

U.S. Army researchers have teamed with Texas A&M University to create a new polymer material that can shape-shift and autonomously heal itself as part of a research effort to improve future unmanned air and robotic vehicles.

In early research, the first-of-its-kind, 3D-printable epoxy-based material can respond to stimuli, and researchers hope it will one day have embedded intelligence allowing it to adapt to its environment without any external control, according to a news release from Army Combat Capabilities Development Command's (CCDC) Army Research Laboratory.

"We want a system of materials to simultaneously provide structure, sensing and response," said Frank Gardea, an aerospace engineer and principal investigator for the effort, at the CCDC.

Gardea envisions a future platform, suitable for air and ground missions, with the "reconfiguration characteristics of the T-1000 character in the Hollywood film, 'Terminator 2.'"

The hit film featured a Terminator made of liquid-metal that could form its arms into stabbing weapons and heal itself after being shot with everything from a 12-gauge shotgun to a 40mm grenade launcher.

So far, the material has responded to temperature, which researchers first selected because of its ease of use during laboratory testing.

In the real world, applying a temperature stimulus is not as easy or practical, so they introduced light-responsiveness because it is easier to control and apply remotely, Gardea said in the release.

Polymers are made up of repeating units, like links on a chain. For softer polymers, these chains are only lightly connected to each other through crosslinks, according to the release. The more crosslinks between chains, the more rigid the material becomes.

"Most cross-linked materials, especially those that are 3D printed, tend to have a fixed form, meaning that, once you manufacture your part, the material cannot be reprocessed or melted," Gardea said, adding that this new material has a "dynamic bond that allows it to go from liquid to solid multiple times, which allows it to be 3D printed and recycled."

These dynamic bonds result in a unique shape memory behavior, so the material can be programmed and triggered to return to a remembered shape, according to the release.

"The flexibility introduced to the polymer chain allows it to be fine-tuned, in unprecedented ways, to get either the softness of rubber or the strength of load-bearing plastics," the release adds.

Much of the previous work on adaptive materials was for materials systems that are either too soft for structural applications or otherwise not suitable for platform development, Bryan Glaz, associate chief scientist for the lab's Vehicle Technology Directorate, said in the release.

The research is still in the discovery phase. The team started off trying to develop a 3D-printable material for structural applications that could be used to print components of UAVs or even rotorcraft, according to the release.

During this exploratory research, program officials noticed that, after failure, the surfaces became active and "would easily adhere to one another," Gardea said, adding that the discovery prompted researchers to investigate the self-healing capabilities.

The immediate next steps are to enhance the actuation behavior and healing, as well as introducing multi-responsiveness, and have the material respond to stimuli beyond temperature and light, Gardea said.

This effort is just part of an exploratory research program to look at new scientific developments that may disrupt current scientific and technological paradigms 30 to 50 years from now, Glaz said.

But the team's scientific advancement marks "a first step along a very long path toward realizing the scientific possibility for deep future platforms," he added.

Lightmatter, a leader in silicon photonics processors, announced its artificial intelligence (AI) photonic processor, a general-purpose AI inference accelerator that uses light to compute and transport data. Using light to calculate and communicate within the chip reduces heat—leading to orders of magnitude reduction in energy consumption per chip and dramatic improvements in processor speed.

Since 2010, the amount of compute power needed to train a state-of-the-art AI algorithm has grown at five times the rate of Moore’s Law scaling—doubling approximately every three and a half months. Lightmatter’s processor solves the growing need for computation to support next-generation AI algorithms.

The 3D-stacked chip package contains over a billion FinFET transistors, tens of thousands of photonic arithmetic units, and hundreds of record-setting data converters. Lightmatter’s photonic processor runs standard machine learning frameworks including PyTorch and TensorFlow, enabling state-of-the-art AI algorithms.

This new architecture is a massive advancement in the development of photonic processors. The performance of this photonic processor provides proof that Lightmatter’s approach to processor design delivers scalable speed and energy efficiency advantages over the current electronic compute paradigm and is the starting point for a roadmap of chips with dramatic performance improvements.

Nucleaire diamantbatterij maakt accu’s overbodig

Welke isotopen gebruikt NDB?

Elders spreekt men over “fissionable isotopes”, zoals Pu-238 en U-232.

News Release, April 8, 2020, Aaarhus University, Credit : Farshad Moradi

Researchers from Aarhus University have just received DKK 33 million (EUR 4.4 million) from the prestigious EU framework programme Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) for a project that may have far-reaching consequences for the computer technology of the future.

The aim is to develop a neuromorphic computer system (NCS) as a novel AI hardware that can set a framework for AI software in a physical system built like a human brain.

A setup like this has the potential for improving the performance of computing systems up to 100,000 times higher than even the state-of-the-art systems of today.

"A number of recent scientific breakthroughs, within spintronics, have meant that today we believe that we can create an artificial brain; a neuromorphic computer system that mimics the brain's synapses and neurons in a neural network that opens up for entirely new possibilities in cognitive computing, for example," says Associate Professor Farshad Moradi, an expert in integrated electronics from the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University.

The project is called SpinAge, and it is coordinated by Associate Professor Farshad Moradi, who has put together a strong international team of researchers to develop a unique, scalable and highly energy-efficient NCS as a proof-of-concept:

"The vision of SpinAge is to develop a neuromorphic computing system using synaptic neurons implemented in spintronics. A bottom-up approach from design and implementation of nano-scale spintronic computing components to large-scale integration that has never been done before," he adds.

The project will completely overturn the normal way of building computers via integrated circuits, by instead adopting a new hardware strategy focusing solely on the structure of the brain, with neurons, synapses and neural networks.

"Our brains work fundamentally differently from traditional computer systems. Various types of brain-inspired processors have already been developed, for example IMB's TrueNorth and Intel's Loihi, but we're looking at more than just the processors. We want to build a completely new type of computing system; a completely new consolidated platform which, like the brain, can perform extremely complicated functions very quickly and with very little energy consumption," says Farshad Moradi.

In other words, this is an entirely new technology that can radically change the way in which computers work.

Energy consumption is of particular interest, because it is regarded as the most important barrier to the artificial intelligence of the future. And this is precisely why we want to copy the structure of the human brain, as it has enormous processing power, but consumes very little energy. The aim of the project is to reduce the energy consumption of current computing systems by at least a factor of 100.

"Lately, much has been done to develop brain-like computer systems - AI systems developed on GPUs or CPUs - that are used for various purposes like robots, autonomous systems, and so on. But there's still a large gap of processing energy for such systems in comparison to the human brain, for example, in cognitive tasks. Throughout this project, we will try to fill this gap as much as possible," says Associate Professor Farshad Moradi.

Slimme apparaten
Slimme apparaten veroveren in toenemende mate onze huiskamers.

It has been more than 10 years in the making, but scientists are preparing to implant a 'bionic eye' in a human subject.

Researchers at Monash University have developed wireless implants that sit on the surface of the brain, which are said to restore vision to the blind.

Called Gennaris bionic vision system, it includes a custom headgear fitted with a camera and wireless transmitter, a vision processor unit and software and a set of 9x9 millimeter tiles that are implanted into the brain.

Studies of the device, used in sheep, were found to be successful and did not produce any adverse health effects.

The team is currently seeking funding to ramp up manufacturing and distribution of the implant, which they say could soon be used to cure other ailments including paralysis.

The Australian scientists are just one of many working towards connecting the brain to a computer, as Elon Musk has also been designing a chip that he demonstrated in pigs recently.

Monash University began designing its 'Gennaris bionic vision system' more than a decade ago, which is a 'world's first' brain implant aimed at restoring site – and it is being prepared for human trials.

The Gennaris bionic vision system is capable of bypassing damaged optic nerves, which are blocking signals being sent from the retina to the 'vision center' of the brain.

The design includes a custom headgear fitted with a camera and wireless transmitter, a vision processor unit and software, and a set of 9x9 millimeter tiles that are implanted into the brain.

The attached camera captures the user's surrounding scene and sends it to the vision processor where the technology extracts data from the transmission.

This then flows to the complex circuitry in each of the implants and is converted into a pattern of electrical pulses that stimulates the brain using microelectrodes.

Professor Lowery, also from the University's Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, said: 'Cortical vision prostheses aim to restore visual perception to those who have lost vision by delivering electrical stimulation to the visual cortex – the region of the brain that receives, integrates and processes visual information.'

'Our design creates a visual pattern from combinations of up to 172 spots of light (phosphenes) which provides information for the individual to navigate indoor and outdoor environments, and recognize the presence of people and objects around them.'

The team received $1 million in funding last year and is raising another round that is due to occur later this year.

'If successful, the MVG team will look to create a new commercial enterprise focused on providing vision to people with untreatable blindness and movement to the arms of people paralyzed by quadriplegia, transforming their health care,' Dr Lewis said.

With the bionic vision system moving into commercial stages, the team is hopefully it could evolve to cure other aliments other than blindness.

Dr. Yan Wong from the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute said: 'The commercialization of the bionic vision technology also ties in nicely to our plans for exploring further applications beyond vision and spinal cord injury, such as the moderation of epilepsy and depression, brain-controlled prosthetics, and the restoration of other vital senses.

'It aligns with our capabilities in neurobionics at Monash University, and having an engaged industry partner to work alongside will be of enormous value.'

In preclinical studies, the team implanted 10 devices in sheep using a purpose-built insertion system.

Stimulation was delivered through the seven active devices for up to nine months and more than 2,700 hours of stimulation was performed without any observable adverse health effects.

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been working tirelessly on a similar device through his brain chip startup Neuralink, which he demonstrated in August.

The three little pig's demo, as he called it, showed an animal named Gertrude with the brain implant. While she snuffed around in a pen, viewers saw her brain activity on a large screen.

When plans to develop the brain-computer interface were first revealed, the firm positioned it as a way to enable people with quadriplegia to control technologies, like a computer or smartphone, with their mind.

However, as many of Musk's ventures evolve the system developed into much more.

He touched on the idea of 'conceptual telepathy,' which allows two individuals to communicate through thoughts with the help of technology.

Voors en tegens van een wereldbasisinkomen

Door Germen Roding · 27 september 2020

Afbeelding

By Vandana Suresh, September 23, 2020

In the September issue of the journal Nature, scientists from Texas A&M University, Hewlett Packard Labs and Stanford University have described a new nanodevice that acts almost identically to a brain cell. Furthermore, they have shown that these synthetic brain cells can be joined together to form intricate networks that can then solve problems in a brain-like manner.

"This is the first study where we have been able to emulate a neuron with just a single nanoscale device, which would otherwise need hundreds of transistors," said Dr. R. Stanley Williams, senior author on the study and professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "We have also been able to successfully use networks of our artificial neurons to solve toy versions of a real-world problem that is computationally intense even for the most sophisticated digital technologies."

In particular, the researchers have demonstrated proof of concept that their brain-inspired system can identify possible mutations in a virus, which is highly relevant for ensuring the efficacy of vaccines and medications for strains exhibiting genetic diversity.

Over the past decades, digital technologies have become smaller and faster largely because of the advancements in transistor technology. However, these critical circuit components are fast approaching their limit of how small they can be built, initiating a global effort to find a new type of technology that can supplement, if not replace, transistors.

In addition to this "scaling-down" problem, transistor-based digital technologies have other well-known challenges. For example, they struggle at finding optimal solutions when presented with large sets of data.

"Let's take a familiar example of finding the shortest route from your office to your home. If you have to make a single stop, it's a fairly easy problem to solve. But if for some reason you need to make 15 stops in between, you have 43 billion routes to choose from," said Dr. Suhas Kumar, lead author on the study and researcher at Hewlett Packard Labs. "This is now an optimization problem, and current computers are rather inept at solving it."

Kumar added that another arduous task for digital machines is pattern recognition, such as identifying a face as the same regardless of viewpoint or recognizing a familiar voice buried within a din of sounds.

But tasks that can send digital machines into a computational tizzy are ones at which the brain excels. In fact, brains are not just quick at recognition and optimization problems, but they also consume far less energy than digital systems. Hence, by mimicking how the brain solves these types of tasks, Williams said brain-inspired or neuromorphic systems could potentially overcome some of the computational hurdles faced by current digital technologies.

To build the fundamental building block of the brain or a neuron, the researchers assembled a synthetic nanoscale device consisting of layers of different inorganic materials, each with a unique function. However, they said the real magic happens in the thin layer made of the compound niobium dioxide.

When a small voltage is applied to this region, its temperature begins to increase. But when the temperature reaches a critical value, niobium dioxide undergoes a quick change in personality, turning from an insulator to a conductor. But as it begins to conduct electric currents, its temperature drops and niobium dioxide switches back to being an insulator.

These back-and-forth transitions enable the synthetic devices to generate a pulse of electrical current that closely resembles the profile of electrical spikes, or action potentials, produced by biological neurons. Further, by changing the voltage across their synthetic neurons, the researchers reproduced a rich range of neuronal behaviors observed in the brain, such as sustained, burst and chaotic firing of electrical spikes.

"Capturing the dynamical behavior of neurons is a key goal for brain-inspired computers," said Kumar. "Altogether, we were able to recreate around 15 types of neuronal firing profiles, all using a single electrical component and at much lower energies compared to transistor-based circuits."

To evaluate if their synthetic neurons can solve real-world problems, the researchers first wired 24 such nanoscale devices together in a network inspired by the connections between the brain's cortex and thalamus, a well-known neural pathway involved in pattern recognition. Next, they used this system to solve a toy version of the viral quasispecies reconstruction problem, where mutant variations of a virus are identified without a reference genome.

By means of data inputs, the researchers introduced the network to short gene fragments. Then, by programming the strength of connections between the artificial neurons within the network, they established basic rules about joining these genetic fragments. The jigsaw puzzle-like task for the network was to list mutations in the virus' genome based on these short genetic segments.

The researchers found that within a few microseconds, their network of artificial neurons settled down in a state that was indicative of the genome for a mutant strain.

Williams and Kumar noted this result is proof of principle that their neuromorphic systems can quickly perform tasks in an energy-efficient way.

The researchers said the next steps in their research will be to expand the repertoire of the problems that their brain-like networks can solve by incorporating other firing patterns and some hallmark properties of the human brain like learning and memory. They also plan to address hardware challenges for implementing their technology on a commercial scale.

"Calculating the national debt or solving some large-scale simulation is not the type of task the human brain is good at and that's why we have digital computers. Alternatively, we can leverage our knowledge of neuronal connections for solving problems that the brain is exceptionally good at," said Williams. "We have demonstrated that depending on the type of problem, there are different and more efficient ways of doing computations other than the conventional methods using digital computers with transistors."

Dr. Ziwen Wang from Stanford University also contributed to this research.

Nieuw soort chips nodig
