Pathways moet neurale netwerken efficiënter laten werken.

In recent years 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has established itself as a promising new manufacturing process for a wide variety of components. Dr Dmitry Momotenko, a chemist at the University of Oldenburg, has now succeeded in fabricating ultrasmall metal objects using a new 3D printing technique. In a paper published together with a team of researchers from ETH Zurich (Switzerland) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) in the scientific journal Nano Letters, he reports that the technique has potential applications in microelectronics, sensor technology and battery technology. The team has developed an electrochemical technique that can be used to make objects out of copper just 25 billionths of a metre (equivalent to 25 nanometres) in diameter. For comparison, a human hair is about 3000 times thicker than the filigree nanostructures.

The new printing technique is based on the comparatively simple and well-known process of electroplating. In electroplating, positively charged metal ions are suspended in a solution. When the liquid comes into contact with a negatively charged electrode, the metal ions combine with the electrons in the electrode to form neutral metal atoms which are then deposited on the electrode and gradually form a solid metal layer. "In this process, a solid metal is fabricated from a liquid salt solution ¬– a process that we electrochemists can control very effectively," says Momotenko. For his nanoprinting technique he uses a solution of positively charged copper ions in a tiny pipette. The liquid emerges from the tip of the pipette through a print nozzle. In the team's experiments the nozzle opening had a diameter of between 253 and 1.6 nanometres. Only two copper ions can pass through such a tiny opening simultaneously.

The biggest challenge for the scientists was that as the metal layer grows, the opening of the print nozzle tends to get clogged. To prevent this the team developed a technique for monitoring the progress of the printing process. They recorded the electrical current between the negatively charged substrate electrode and a positive electrode inside the pipette and then the movement of the nozzle was adjusted accordingly in a fully automated process: the nozzle approached the negative electrode for a very short time and then retracted as soon as the metal layer had exceeded a certain thickness. Using this technique, the researchers gradually applied one copper layer after another to the electrode's surface. Thanks to the extremely precise positioning of the nozzle they were able to print both vertical columns and inclined or spiral nanostructures, and even managed to produce horizontal structures by simply changing the printing direction.
They were also able to control the diameter of the structures very precisely – firstly through the choice of print nozzle size and secondly during the actual printing process on the basis of electrochemical parameters. According to the team, the smallest possible objects that can be printed using this method have a diameter of about 25 nanometres, which is equivalent to 195 copper atoms in a row.

That means that with the new electrochemical technique it is possible to print far smaller metal objects than have ever been printed before. 3D printing using metal powders, for example – a typical method for 3D printing of metals – can currently achieve a resolution of about 100 micrometres. The smallest objects that can be produced using this method are therefore 4,000 times larger than those in the current study. Although even smaller structures can be produced using other techniques, the choice of potential materials is limited. "The technology we are working on combines both worlds - metal printing and nanoscale precision," says Momotenko. Just as 3D printing has sparked a revolution in the production of complex larger components, additive manufacturing at the micro- and nanoscales could make it possible to fabricate functional structures and even devices with ultrasmall dimensions, he explains.

"3D-printed catalysts with high surface area and special geometry to allow particular reactivity could be prepared for the production of complex chemicals," says Momotenko. Three-dimensional electrodes could make electrical energy storage more efficient, he adds. The chemist and his team are currently working towards this very goal: in their NANO-3D-LION project they aim to drastically increase the surface area of electrodes and reduce distances between the cathode and the anode in lithium-ion batteries through 3D printing, in order to speed up the charging process. The project has been funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant since March 2021.

November 29, 2021 By Michael Brown

The discovery that silicon could be used to make transistors smaller and more efficient in the late 1950s led to the invention of the integrated circuit — the basis for computers, cellphones and just about every other electrical device in use today — and signalled the dawn of the largest, most complex industry history has ever known.

And while North American manufacturers used this homegrown technology to get a head start, today's $500-billion semiconductor industry has largely moved on.

"The North American semiconductor industry has fallen behind the rest of the world, but I believe Alberta and Canada are now positioned to help the North American industry regain its competitive advantage and its competitive strength," said Ken Gordon, CEO of the University of Alberta spinoff company Quantum Silicon Inc. (QSi).

Gordon's optimism comes from a long-standing investment from the provincial and federal government in the work of Robert Wolkow, physics researcher in the U of A's Faculty of Science and chief technical officer with QSi. Wolkow's atomic silicon circuitry technology is poised to revolutionize the integrated circuit industry.

Recently, Wolkow, with funding from the federal government's PrairiesCan and Alberta Innovates along with matching industry support, bought North America's first atom-scale lithography equipment worth $5 million in an effort to continue the creation of an atomically precise manufacturing centre of excellence at the U of A.

"There's no reason why we shouldn't be a world centre for atom-scale manufacturing generally, and specifically for these atom-scale electronics, which will increasingly take over functions that are dominated by today's transistor technology," he said.

The key to commercializing Wolkow's atomic silicon circuitry technology is solving the energy-consumption problem faced by the semiconductor.

"This technology has the potential to reduce energy consumption by 100 to 1,000 times," said Wolkow. "I see this as the ultimate green technology."

Beyond the limits of today's technology
In May, IBM announced a breakthrough in semiconductor design and process that holds the promise of using a quarter as much energy as current iterations, improving efficiency in electrical devices from cellphones and laptops to TVs and autonomous vehicles.

Wringing the last bit of efficiency out of 60-year-old integrated circuit technology is welcome news, considering in only a few decades, if rates of electronic increases hold, all the world's current energy production would be needed just to run our electronics.

"There is widespread agreement that there is no room left to improve today's technology. It's pretty much at the end of the technology road map," said Wolkow.

"The world desperately needs a lower-energy electronics platform for remaking everything in an efficient form."

Wolkow explained the problem with controlling matter at the atomic scale is not only "seeing" at the atomic scale, but moving atoms at the atomic scale.

And though others had developed ways to move atoms more than 20 years ago, they could only move atoms that were very weakly held. Anything made in that way would fall apart above extreme cryogenic conditions.

"It was a great demonstration but it wasn't useful," he said.

Wolkow's atom-defined silicon devices are robust — easily withstanding high temperatures. With the inclusion of machine learning advances, QSi has developed the unique tools and the physical processes that allow error-free, automated and scalable atomically precise manufacturing.

"We can do functions that no transistor circuitry can achieve, including quantum things that are out of reach of transistor circuitry," said Wolkow.

"We are the best in the world at atomically precise manufacturing technology."

Generating economic value
QSi is just now at the stage of identifying first products and is still only capable of making things of modest complexity, but those things could nevertheless be of high value.

One such product is a quantum random number generator, which Wolkow said is an essential encryption component used in making web communications safe.

"Because this technology uses extremely low power compared with any pre-existing devices, we, for the first time, can make this technology portable and accessible to everyone," he noted.

The promise of this technology in helping diversify the provincial and national economy has brought in investment from industry and government partners since Wolkow came to the U of A nearly two decades ago.

The physics professor has been afforded the luxury of splitting his time between his U of A laboratory and a cross-campus lab housed within the National Research Council Nanotechnology Research Centre. He also helped build the U of A's state-of-the-art Nanofabrication Facility.

"I've been able to do things in a university atmosphere that normally couldn't be done, sustaining very expensive and complex equipment that can't be maintained with normal levels of support, whether it be financial or personnel," he said.

Fusion energy may no longer be 30 or 50 years away.
Nuclear fusion does not emit carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, so when fully developed, it can be the most powerful tool to mitigate climate change as a low carbon energy source.
"Everything has changed. Five years ago, only one company had raised more than 100 million dollars, and everybody else was struggling to get money. Today, the same company has raised closer to a billion dollars, and other companies have raised more than 100 million dollars. It's a whole different world," said Malcolm Handley, the leader of a venture capital fund specialised in fusion.
public-private partnerships fostering the development of fusion already in the near term, with companies aiming to generate fusion electricity on a commercial scale as early as around 2035

It's been known for some time that organic neuromorphic robots can learn. Now they can move too. Autonomously.

A maze is a popular device among psychologists to assess the learning capacity of mice or rats. But how about robots? Can they learn to successfully navigate the twists and turns of a labyrinth? Now, researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany, have proven they can. Their robot bases its decisions on the very system humans use to think and act: the brain. The study, which was published in Science Advances, paves the way to exciting new applications of neuromorphic devices in health and beyond.

Machine learning and neural networks have become all the rage in recent years, and quite understandably so, considering their many successes in image recognition, medical diagnosis, e-commerce and many other fields. Still though, this software-based approach to machine intelligence has its drawbacks, not least because it consumes so much power to train the algorithms.

Mimicking the human brain
This power issue is one of the reasons that researchers have been trying to develop computers that are much more energy efficient. And to find a solution many are finding inspiration in the human brain, a thinking machine unrivalled in its low power consumption due to how it combines memory and processing.

Neurons in our brain communicate with one another through so-called synapses, which are strengthened each time information flows through them. It is this plasticity that ensures that humans remember and learn.

"In our research, we have taken this model to develop a robot that is able to learn to move through a labyrinth", explains Imke Krauhausen, PhD student at the department of Mechanical Engineering at TU/e and principal author of the paper.

"Just as a synapse in a mouse brain is strengthened each time it takes the correct turn in a psychologist's maze, our device is 'tuned' by applying a certain amount of electricity. By tuning the resistance in the device, you change the voltage that control the motors. They in turn determine whether the robot turns right or left."

So how does it work?
The robot that Krauhausen and her colleagues used for their research is a Mindstorms EV3, a robotics kit made by Lego. Equipped with two wheels, traditional guiding software to make sure it can follow a line, and a number of reflectance and touch sensors, it was sent into a 2 m2 large maze made up out of black-lined hexagons in a honeycomb-like pattern.

The robot is programmed to turn right by default. Each time it reaches a dead end or diverges from the designated path to the exit (which is indicated by visual cues), it is told to either return or turn left. This corrective stimulus is then remembered in the neuromorphic device for the next effort.

"In the end, it took our robot 16 runs to find the exit successfully," says Krauhausen. "And, what's more, once it has learned to navigate this specific route, it can navigate any other path that it is given in one go. So, the knowledge it has acquired is generalizable."

Part of the success of the robot's ability to learn and exit the maze lies in the unique integration of sensors and motors, according to Krauhausen, who cooperated closely with the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz for this research. "This sensorimotor integration, in which sense and movement reinforce one another, is also very much how nature operates, so this is what we tried to emulate in our robot."

Smart polymers
Another clever thing about the research is the organic material used for the neuromorphic robot. This polymer (known as p(g2T-TT)) is not only stable, but it also is able to 'retain' a large part of the specific states in which it has been tuned during the various runs through the labyrinth. This ensures that the learned behaviour 'sticks', just like neurons and synapses in a human brain remember events or actions.

The use of polymer instead of silicon in the field of neuromorphic computing was pioneered by Paschalis Gkoupidenis of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz and Yoeri van de Burgt of TU/e, both co-authors of the paper.

In their research (dating from 2015 and 2017), they proved that the material can be tuned in a much larger range of conduction than inorganic materials, and that it is able to 'remember' or store learned states for extended periods. Since then, organic devices have become a hot topic in the field of hardware-based artificial neural networks.

Bionic hands
Polymeric materials also have the added advantage that they can be used in numerous biomedical applications. "Because of their organic nature, these smart devices can in principle be integrated with actual nerve cells. Say you lost your arm during an injury. Then you could potentially use these devices to link your body to a bionic hand," says Krauhausen.

Another promising application of organic neuromorphic computing lies in small so-called edge computing devices where data from sensors is processed locally outside of the cloud. Van de Burgt: "This is where I see our devices going in the future, our materials will be very useful because they are easy to tune, use much less power, and are cheap to make."

So will neuromorphic robots one day be able to play a soccer game, just like TU/e's successful soccer robots?

Krauhausen: "In principle, that is certainly possible. But there's a long way to go. Our robots still rely partly on traditional software to move around. And for the neuromorphic robots to execute really complex tasks, we need to build neuromorphic networks in which many devices work together in a grid. That's something that I will be working on in the next phase of my PhD research."

Slome robots worden sneller, intelligenter en zelfstandiger

Energiezuinige AI-chip laat drones razendsnel beslissingen maken

"We maken daarbij gebruik van training by example.

Daaruit :

What form it takes and what its first "killer apps" will be are a matter of conjecture. And, most importantly, it is not yet settled who will set the rules and collect the profits — though today's internet giants are in pole position.
limiting the power of the dominant tech companies will not be easy. It will depend heavily on the outcome of the current global push for more effective regulation.
As things stand, today's internet powers are in a good position to dominate a future metaverse. If that happens, then they will end up with far more power to shape the online lives of billions of people than they have now. What could possibly go wrong?

Volgens Meta Builds The World's Fastest AI Supercomputer To Power The Metaverse moet de RSC halverwege 2022 (ongeveer juli 2022) gereed komen.

What's next? Human brain-scale AI.

Funded by the Slovakian government using funds allocated by the EU, the I4DI consortium is behind the initiative to build a 64 AI exaflop machine (that's 64 billion, billion AI operations per second) on our platform by the end of 2022. This will enable Slovakia and the EU to deliver for the first time in the history of humanity a human brain-scale AI supercomputer. Meanwhile, almost a dozen other countries are watching this project closely, with interest in replicating this supercomputer in their own countries.

What is the quantum apocalypse and should we be scared?

Imagine a world where encrypted, secret files are suddenly cracked open - something known as "the quantum apocalypse".

Put very simply, quantum computers work completely differently from the computers developed over the past century. In theory, they could eventually become many, many times faster than today's machines.

That means that faced with an incredibly complex and time-consuming problem - like trying to decrypt data - where there are multiple permutations running into the billions, a normal computer would take many years to break those encryptions, if ever.

But a future quantum computer, in theory, could do this in just seconds.

Such computers could be able to solve all sorts of problems for humanity. The UK government is investing in the National Quantum Computing Centre in Harwell, Oxfordshire, hoping to revolutionise research in the field.

But there is also a dark side.

Data thieves

A number of countries, including the US, China, Russia and the UK, are working hard and investing huge sums of money to develop these super-fast quantum computers with a view to gaining strategic advantage in the cyber-sphere.

Every day vast quantities of encrypted data - including yours and mine - are being harvested without our permission and stored in data banks, ready for the day when the data thieves' quantum computers are powerful enough to decrypt it.

"Everything we do over the internet today," says Harri Owen, chief strategy officer at the company PostQuantum, "from buying things online, banking transactions, social media interactions, everything we do is encrypted.

"But once a functioning quantum computer appears that will be able to break that encryption... it can almost instantly create the ability for whoever's developed it to clear bank accounts, to completely shut down government defence systems - Bitcoin wallets will be drained.
It's a prognosis echoed by Ilyas Khan, chief executive of the Cambridge and Colorado-based company Quantinuum. "Quantum computers will render useless most existing methods of encryption," he says.

"They are a threat to our way of life."

Quantum-proofing

Seriously? That does sound completely apocalyptic, so why haven't we heard more about this?

The answer is that yes, OK, this would indeed be the case if no precautions were being taken. "If we weren't doing anything to combat it then bad things would happen," says a Whitehall official who asked not to be named.

In practice, mitigation efforts are already in train and have been for some years. In the UK, all government data classified as "top secret" is already "post-quantum" - that is, using new forms of encryption which researchers hope will be quantum-proof.

Tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Intel and IBM are working on solutions, as well as more specialist companies like Quantinuum and Post-Quantum.

Most importantly, there is currently something of a post-quantum cryptography "beauty parade" taking place at the US National Institute for Science and Technology (NIST) just outside Washington DC. The aim is to establish a standardised defence strategy that will protect industry, government, academia and critical national infrastructure against the perils of the quantum apocalypse.

All of this will not be cheap.

Quantum computing is expensive, laborious and generates large amounts of heat. Developing quantum-safe algorithms is one of the major security challenges of our time.

But experts say the alternative - doing nothing - is simply not an option.

Bratislava, Slovakia / Las Vegas, Nevada, January 25, 2022

Tachyum™ today announced that it was selected by the Slovak Republic to participate in the latest submission for the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI), to develop Prodigy 2 for HPC/AI. Prodigy 2 for HPC/AI will enable 1 AI Zettaflop and more than 10 DP Exaflops computers to support superhuman brain-scale computing by 2024 for under €1B. As part of this selection, Tachyum could receive a 49 million Euro grant to accelerate a second-generation of its Tachyum Prodigy® processor for HPC/AI in a 3-nanometer process.

The IPCEI program can make a very important contribution to sustainable economic growth, jobs, competitiveness and resilience for industry and the economy in the European Union. IPCEI will strengthen the EU's open strategic autonomy by enabling breakthrough innovation and infrastructure projects through cross-border cooperation and with positive spill-over effects on the internal market and society as a whole.

Even though global semiconductor demand has exploded, Europe's share of the market has shrunk. By announcing the proposed European Chips Act, President Ursula von der Leyen sent a strong economic signal to EU member states about the need to achieve technological sovereignty. The Act builds on the European Alliance on Processors and Semiconductor Technologies which was launched in July 2021. The strategic project that Tachyum has been selected for will result in a major inflection point for the data center industry and the democratization of AI.

According to Europe 2020's economic strategy, IT is one of the key drivers for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Its ability to transform the structures and dynamics of European society enables people to organize their lives and businesses in new ways, manage information and learn throughout their lives, and contribute to the pool of online knowledge. Because of the importance of these projects, pan-European research and innovation, like that in which Tachyum has been invited to participate, represent an advancement of common European interests.

Tachyum's Prodigy processor can run HPC applications, convolutional AI, explainable AI, general AI, bio AI, and spiking neural networks, plus normal data center workloads, on a single homogeneous processor platform, using existing standard programming models. Without Prodigy, hyperscale data centers must use a combination of disparate CPU, GPU and TPU hardware, for these different workloads, creating inefficiency, expense, and the complexity of separate supply and maintenance infrastructures. Using specific hardware dedicated to each type of workload (e.g. data center, AI, HPC), results in underutilization of hardware resources, and more challenging programming, support, and maintenance. Prodigy's ability to seamlessly switch among these various workloads dramatically changes the competitive landscape and the economics of data centers.

"As we near the completion of our first phase of delivering Prodigy to market in order to transform data centers throughout the world, we have already begun work on the next generation of Prodigy processors that will enable us to help transform economic opportunities for society at large," said Dr. Radoslav Danilak, founder and CEO of Tachyum. "The importance of AI and supercomputers cannot be underestimated. Being selected as a key participant in this IPCEI allows us to reimagine how we can best revolutionize industry by developing a 3nm version of Prodigy that will enable superhuman brain-scale computing. We look forward to working with the commission and contributing to the success of this project."

The image above is of an actual, real world warp bubble. Image credit: Dr. Harold G. White of the Limitless Space Institute.

Warp drive, the ability to travel faster than light, is entirely a product of science fiction. Or at least it was until now.

The world's first warp bubble emerged as a recent accidental discovery by DARPA-funded researchers, according to the latest report. The Limitless Space Institute (LS) team led by former NASA warp drive expert Dr. Harold G "Sonny" White has spotted an interesting encounter that could be used by the spacecraft for faster travels.

"To be clear, our finding is not a warp bubble analog, it is a real, albeit humble and tiny, warp bubble," said White in a statement, quickly dispensing with the notion that this is anything other than the creation of an actual, real-world warp bubble. "Hence the significance."

The discovery took place during a research project studying not warp drive, nor the 1994 theories of mathematician Miguel Alcubierre that first offered the potential for what warp technology might look like. Rather, this happened during a project studying Casimir cavities and their ability to produce energy. Through an incredibly serendipitous happenstance, it took an engineer conducting the research at the exact right time — one who was familiar with warp technology research and knew what he was looking at — to realize that this totally unrelated research had produced a warp bubble.

The observed effect was not an analog, not something similar to a warp bubble, but a very small, very humble, true to life structure that matched Alcubierre's research perfectly. For the first time, we know what physical tools it's going to take to create a real warp bubble. This means that warp field theory has made the move from outlandish science fiction into something that we can actually build in the real world, using tools and technology we already have.

The Concept Behind Warp Drive
Most people are familiar with the concept of warp drive through what they've seen on Star Trek.

Our spacecrafts are currently limited to the laws of standard Einsteinian physics. To accellerate your ship, you have to throw something in the opposite direction to the one in which you wish to travel. Throughout the history of aviation and aeronautics, this meant burning fuel and shooting out the back of the ship in a vigorous physical reaction. The limitation of this approach is that eventually you run out of stuff to throw.

The other limitation is that your ship is still subject to Einstein's equation describing special relativity, which states that as you approach the speed of light, more and more of the energy you expend goes into increasing your own mass, until you reach the point where no matter how much more energy you put in you can't go any faster — and you never quite reach the speed of light. It's impossible to accelerate faster than light using standard physics, because your ship just gets more massive the more energy you put in, and it gets so massive you can't do anything more with it.

The concept of the Alcubierre warp bubble makes things interesting. If you surrounded the local Euclidean space your ship occupies with a warp bubble, and then push the warp bubble instead of the ship itself, Einsten's equation is sidestepped. It's still valid inside the warp bubble, but the bubble itself can theoretically move faster than light without breaking the laws of physics to do it.

Peer Review
"While conducting analysis related to a DARPA-funded project to evaluate possible structure of the energy density present in a Casimir cavity as predicted by the dynamic vacuum model," reads the actual findings published in the peer-reviewed European Physical Journal, "a micro/nano-scale structure has been discovered that predicts negative energy density distribution that closely matches requirements for the Alcubierre metric."

And that, in turn, opens the door to investigation of possible future investigation of warp fields, and potential applications. Scientific study of the potential of warp drive is now officially on the table.

The warp bubble observed is tiny. We're talking nano-scale tiny, and a result of negative energy research using Casamir cavities, exploiting some of the bizarre quantum physics effects of these unusual structures. While this is very much a beginning, it opens the opportunity to do more research into the specific question of warp bubbles and Alcubierre's equations.

Because as it happens out, Alcubierre turned out to be right.

By Matthew Griffin, 25th February 2022

First, we heard about a startup that can turn plastic waste in the oceans and use it to power the ships that are helping clean up the oceans, and now in a similar move but in an all together different theatre an Australian company, which is part of an international effort, has announced plans that they're going to be recycling dangerous space junk into rocket fuel – in space.

For aerospace companies this seems like a win win – get rid of space junk which threatens the future of space travel and solve the problem of satellites and space vehicles falling out off the sky when they run out of fuel. It also comes hot on the heels of the launch of the first gas station in orbit.

The orbit our planet depends on is getting clogged with debris from old spacecrafts. Dead satellites and spent rocket parts are whizzing around at speeds of up to 28,000 kilometres an hour, posing a threat to communications satellites and the International Space Station (ISS).

At those speeds, even a small screw or a fleck of paint poses a risk to facilities such as the ISS, as well as the humans in them.

The other week Russia fired a missile and destroyed one of its own satellites, sending debris flying. The US said that debris now "threatens the interests of all nations." The worst-case scenario is cascading collisions between smaller and smaller bits of space junk until orbits become unusable, a situation known as the Kessler Effect.

In response to this South Australian company Neumann Space has developed an "in-space electric propulsion system" that can be used in low Earth orbit to extend the missions of spacecraft, move satellites, or de-orbit them. And now Neumann is working on a plan with three other companies to turn space junk into fuel for that propulsion system.

Japanese start-up Astroscale has already demonstrated how it can use satellites to capture bits of debris in space.

Nanorocks, in the US, is working on a plan using advanced robotics to store and cut up that debris while it is still in orbit, and yet another US company, Cislunar, is developing a space foundry to melt debris into metal rods. And Neumann Space's propulsion system can use those metal rods as fuel – their system ionises the metal which then creates thrust to move objects around orbit.

Chief executive officer Herve Astier said when Neumann was approached to be part of a supply chain to melt metal in space, he thought it was a futuristic plan, and would not be "as easy as it looks."

"But they got a grant from NASA so we built a prototype and it works," he said.

"We did a live technology demonstration. One can grab a piece of debris, one can cut the debris open, one can melt the debris, and we can use that," he added.

Once objects are sent into orbit, they can be there forever unless they float out of orbit and burn up in Earth's atmosphere or occasionally hit Earth's surface. As the space junk problem worsens, institutions around the world are trying to come up with solutions, from magnets to "space claws" to harpoons, and Australian researchers are also working on the problem.

Meanwhile Saber Astronautics has won another NASA grant to develop a drag sail, which will launch from a spacecraft at the end of its life and drag it out of orbit.

Sydney's Electro Optic Systems, working with the University of Canberra, has developed laser technology that can nudge junk away from potential collisions, or towards the atmosphere.

The Australian Institute of Machine Learning has a grant to improve detection and tracking of debris, and a new surveillance radar in Western Australia will help with that too.

Recycling the junk, instead of capturing it or destroying it, is another dimension again. Astier says it is still futuristic, but now he can see that it's possible.

"A lot of people are putting money into debris. Often it's to take it down into the atmosphere and burn it up. But if it's there and you can capture it and reuse it, it makes sense from a business perspective, because you're not shipping it up there," he said. "It's like developing a gas station in space."

By Jakob Steinschaden, 03. March 2022, 14:08

In 1965, the British Jack Good first described a machine that exceeded the capacity of the human brain in his scientific work "Speculations Concerning the First Ultra-Intelligent Machine". Almost 60 years later, the British chip unicorn Graphcore announced that it wants to bring exactly such a supercomputer onto the market in 2024. Inspired by the ideas of Jack Good, it will be called "The Good Computer" and should be able to process more individual parameters than our brains.

"Our brain is an incredibly complex computing device with around 100 billion neurons and more than 100 trillion parameters in a biological-neural network system that achieves computing power that has never been achieved by any silicon computer," Graphcore says.

The Good Computer is said to be able to outperform the human brain with a performance of 10 exa-flops, up to 4 petabytes of memory and a bandwidth of 10 petabytes/second. The AI computer should then create 500 trillion parameters – five times the ability of a human brain. The estimated costs of the super calculator: $120 million.

New IPUs shared with TSMC
As reported several times, Graphcore is one of the most important chip producers in Europe. The British unicorn, founded by Nigel Toon and Simon Knowles in Bristol in 2016, is considered one of the main challengers to US chip giant Nvidia in the field of AI chips. Graphcore has specialized in so-called IPUs (Intelligent Processing Units), which are designed to be able to run AI applications. And these IPUs will also be the building blocks of the Good Computer. 8,192 IPUs connected together should provide the computing power.

Graphcore is also bringing new IPUs onto the market, which go by the name "Bow" and promise 40% higher performance with 16% better power efficiency than their predecessor models – at the same prices. According to the company, these are also the world's first 3D wafer-on-wafer processors. In order to implement this, the British unicorn is working closely with the Taiwanese chip producer TSMC.

In general, Grahcore IPUs are already being used by many universities and research institutes around the world. The new bow chips are now also to be developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), which is based in the US Department of Energy. The aim is to use the AI chips in the field of cybersecurity and computer-aided chemistry.

Cost point: $120 million
But back to the super computer. For the Good Computer, more than 8,000 of these IPUs are to be connected together to achieve the computing power. For comparison: Today's leading supercomputers, such as those found in Japan, the USA or China, operate in the range of a few hundred peta-flops. In addition, there is said to be a computer in China that creates an exa-flop. The 10 exa-flops Graphcore wants to create are a level above.

"This computer is said to cost $120 million, but that's less than many other supercomputers today," Graphcore founders Nigel Toon and Simon Knowles tell Trending Topics.

It will not become a high-precision computer, but rather go in the direction of probabilistic computing. You would no longer write specific software, but methods for how the computer should deal with a problem, and the computer would then translate that into code itself. So far, you need your own systems for speech recognition and image recognition, but the vision is that the Good Computer should be able to learn from speech and image at the same time. For example, the supercomputer should be able to calculate how proteins fold – something that today's computers cannot do.

In the Good Computer, the Graphcore founders see something like a democratization of super computing. "The largest supercomputers are funded by governments. The Good Computer will enable companies and universities to work with AI because it is a product for the market."
