Zal dit bewaarheid worden?

Elon Musk has warned that humans risk being overtaken by artificial intelligence within the next five years.
Hahaha!

Komt daar nu verandering in?

Remotely Piloted Aircraft System

First Flying Car Successfully Tested by Japanese Company, Aiming for Launch in 2023

By Joelle Goldstein September 07, 2020 02:25 PM

The four-minute, public demonstration flight took place at a Toyota Test Field in Japan on Aug. 25

The future of travel may be coming — and sooner than you think!

On Aug. 25, the first flying car was successfully tested by SkyDrive Inc., a Japanese company that develops urban air mobility solutions, at a Toyota Test Field in Japan, according to a press release on SkyDrive's website.

The public demonstration flight lasted a total of four minutes, as the SD-03 flying car model — which measures two meters high, four meters wide and four meters long, and takes up as much ground as two parked cars — circled the 10,000-square-meter (approximately 2.5-acre) field with a pilot at the wheel.

"We are extremely excited to have achieved Japan’s first-ever manned flight of a flying car in the two years since we founded SkyDrive in 2018 with the goal of commercializing such aircraft," SkyDrive CEO, Tomohiro Fukuzawa, said in a statement.

"We aim to take our social experiment to the next level in 2023 and to that end we will be accelerating our technological development and our business development," Fukuzawa added. "We want to realize a society where flying cars are an accessible and convenient means of transportation in the skies and people are able to experience a safe, secure, and comfortable new way of life."

According to SkyDrive, the pearl white aircraft was "designed to be the world’s smallest electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) model as a new means of transportation for the near future."

Though the pilot was at the controls and technical staff at the field helped monitor flight conditions and aircraft performance, SkyDrive said the aircraft was also operated by a computer-assisted control system that "helped ensure flight stability and safety."

The model features a total of eight electric motors in four locations to "ensure safety in emergency situations" and "to address compliance standards and allay potential regulatory concerns," the company explained.

It also includes a pair of propellers and two white lights in front, as well as a red light on the bottom of the body — features that are unique to flying cars and designed to act as indicators for which way the vehicle is traveling while floating in the sky.

"In designing an unexplored, new genre of transportation known as the flying car, we chose the keyword 'progressive' for inspiration," explained SkyDrive design director, Takumi Yamamot. "We wanted this vehicle to be futuristic, charismatic and desirable for all future customers, while fully incorporating the high technology of SkyDrive."

According to the press release, the company plans on continuing test flights under various conditions to make sure they meet safety and technology standards.

They are aiming to obtain approval for flights outside of the Toyota Test Field before the end of 2020, and hope to launch the flying car by 2023, though no price has been announced yet.

"SkyDrive’s flying car has been designed to be a coupe embodying dreams and exuding charisma, such that it will be welcomed into people’s lives and used naturally," the company wrote in the press release.

"The company hopes that its aircraft will become people’s partner in the sky rather than merely a commodity and it will continue working to design a safe sky for the future as a partner in the sky," they added.

Blood God
It's easy to get swept up by the tide of excitement for space exploration and perhaps someday even settling on another world — just think about what a moment of national pride each "first" was during the Cold War-era Space Race.

But that excitement, taken too far into fanaticism, could give rise to a disastrous future in which space is controlled by a totalitarian empire, warns Johns Hopkins University political scientist Daniel Deudney. In a review of Deudney's new book about those concerns, University of Leicester international relations lecturer Bleddyn Bowen argues that Deudney might be a touch pessimistic — but makes a compelling case that space exploration poses several oft-overlooked threats to our future.

Skull Throne
In particular, Deudney warns against the increased militarization and gung-ho exploration and colonization of space done without thought for political consequences.

"Provocatively, his argument that a particular strand of Space Expansionism is an 'expensive suicide cult' is not as absurd as it first sounds," Bowen writes. "If humans do not stop and think politically about the consequences of their designs for outer space, humanity increases its risk of self-destruction through totalitarianism and the use of extinction-level event-triggering weapon systems."

End Times
Deudney's book lays out six threats to humanity, chief among them the military use of equipment needed to terraform other worlds or otherwise settle the cosmos. He concludes, according to The Space Review's analysis, that we should abandon any hope of settling space until peace on Earth is achieved and we can explore responsibly.

Without agreeing with everything Deudney said, Bowen says that his warning should serve as an important counter to space exploration's rose-colored, techno-utopian coating.

By Demond Cureton 13:57 GMT 27.10.2020 (updated 14:44 GMT 27.10.2020)

China has revealed massive levels of investment in mainland technologies amid the ongoing US trade war, with numerous initiatives aimed at replacing US components with domestic ones as the Trump administration cracks down on Beijing's access to the US market.

Abishur Prakash discussed the greater implications of the ongoing US-China trade war, namely the urgency of Chinese firms to decouple from key US technologies amid the ongoing trade war.

Mr Prakash is the world's leading authority on geopolitics and technology, and is a geopolitical futurist at the Center for Innovating the Future (CIF), a tech strategy consulting firm based in Toronto. He has also authored several books, including Next Geopolitics: Volume One and Two, Geopolitics of Artificial Intelligence (Go.AI) and The Age of Killer Robots.

SPUTNIK: The US-China trade war has escalated significantly in recent months, indicating a major crossroads for China's ambitions towards autonomy. Is Beijing ready to build a self-sufficient tech industry and can it weather the storm before reaching such a milestone?

Abishur Prakash:
It doesn't matter if China is or is not ready. It has no choice but to become self-sufficient in technology, and the US tech-based foreign policy has created a new "status quo" for China.

Look at Chinese technology firms. From Huawei to Bytedance to Alibaba, Chinese firms are being forced to play by a new set of business rules that are hijacking their business model and profitability.

For example, Huawei has mulled selling Honor, one of its smartphone divisions, because of restrictions around chips.

Huawei Slams 'Unfair, Unacceptable' Ban From Swedish 5G Networks as US Tech War Campaign Intensifies
The new status quo means China has to calculate things differently, and officials in Beijing realize that, as long as they depend on the US for technology, China's global ambitions can never be achieved. And, China's commercial interests will always be vulnerable to a change of tone in Washington.
Of course, becoming self-sufficient in areas like semiconductors, software and servers, will take time, with many bumps along the way. Some Chinese technology firms may go bust or certain Chinese tech ambitions may need to be tempered.

But, it won't take as long as some suspect for China to catch up. For instance, China's chip industry is where China's software industry was a decade ago. Nobody viewed Chinese software as comparable or even close to the American equivalents, but today, Huawei is set to launch its own operating system, HarmonyOS, to replace Android and Windows.

The technology gap between China and the US is shrinking.

SPUTNIK: Several key tech firms have entered buyout talks, including the Nvidia-Arm and AMD-Xilinx deals. Can you explain how such a buyout could affect Chinese firms' access to key technologies? Are Beijing's concerns over a potential expansion of restrictions valid, and how could Trump use this to his advantage?

Abishur Prakash:
Nvidia's buyout of Arm comes at a pivotal moment for China. The global chip industry is increasingly becoming "off limits" for Chinese companies, and even non-US firms such as Samsung are giving China the cold shoulder when it comes to chips.

What makes Arm so important is its technology is fundamentally different than other chip technologies. Unlike Intel or AMD, Arm's technology is used by Chinese firms to build chips. For instance, Huawei chips are based on Arm's architecture, and previously, the British firm has used its origins as a way to circumvent US sanctions to do business with China.

But if Arm is acquired by Nvidia, all of this changes. The US could stop the firm from doing business in China and cut China off from chips even more. Many mainland firms using Arm to build chips would lose access, putting tremendous pressure on China's mobile sector, considering Arm architecture is generally used in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Considering China's consumer goods firms are the 'golden children', Beijing may view Nvidia acquiring Arm as crossing a red line and push the Chinese government to block the deal.

SPUTNIK: Following Moore's Law, the global chipmaking industry has become increasingly competitive. What strategies are China taking to procure chips without outsourcing architecture from third-party firms, or violating IP rights and trade restrictions? What would be the best interim plan for such companies while working towards such a goal? How might China go about procuring chips considering has been losing access and many of its technology firms are under pressure (i.e. Huawei)?

Abishur Prakash:
China knows that it has to operate at warp speed to procure chips, and it's already taking steps.

First, China is focusing on attracting the best semiconductor talent, and has already poached more than 3,000 semiconductor experts from Taiwan. More recently, two Chinese chip firms hired 100 former employees from TSMC, the world's biggest chip manufacturer based in Taiwan, to work on chip projects backed by the Chinese government.

Second, China is turning to open-source chip technologies to circumvent Western companies. For example, Alibaba has unveiled its Hanguang 800 chip for the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G, built on the open-source RISC-V solution from a US university. Alibaba has also developed its own AI-chips, which it has deployed throughout its business operations.

Third, many Chinese firms are investing in the next era of chips, which isn't necessarily controlled by the US. An example of this is Horizon Robotics, a Chinese technology firm that's developed "AI on a chip," allowing appliances to communicate with one another without the Internet.

Many Chinese technology firms have geopolitical strategies in place to counter what's happening on the world stage. Hikvision not only has a plan to replace all US components, but is also developing its own chip production capabilities.
This could mean that chip wars between the US and China are not black and white, and there is far more taking place than meets the eye.

SPUTNIK: Beijing is set to launch fresh countermeasures against Washington to level the playing field in the ongoing trade war. In a worst case scenario, could you tell us a few examples of US firms which depend on Chinese technologies or components, and the impact of countermeasures on their supply chains?

Abishur Prakash:
It depends how one looks at technology, where current ones like smartphones, semiconductors, servers and software, are all invented and produced in the US.

US technology dependence on China falls into two camps: supply chains and critical resources, with the former being manufacturing and sourcing equipment and the latter rare earth minerals and lithium.

From 2014 to 2017, China accounted for 80 percent of the US's rare earth mineral imports, which are used in almost every US technology firm, including Apple and Intel.

The picture is not much different with lithium as China controls at least 50 percent of the world's lithium production, meaning US automotive firms, like Tesla and General Motors, depend heavily on China for their electric car ambitions.

This dependency puts many US firms at risk. If China takes action on resources, like rare earth minerals, it could paralyze many technology firms, but even here, there is a separate possibility emerging.

Both Apple and Tesla are working on building China-exclusive supply chains, meaning all products sold in China will be manufactured in China using Chinese parts and equipment, leading to a new business paradigm.
If China retaliates, it may be business as usual for firms like Apple and Tesla in the Chinese market, but would bring disruption and uncertainty in markets outside the mainland.

So far, we've looked at the current era of technology, but numerous Chinese-origin technologies are emerging today.

For example, industrial robot firms such as Siasun are exporting products around the world, and Sogou AI-avatars have been exported to the UAE. While this does not represent the US depending on Chinese-origin tech, it does reveal the world adoption of mainland technologies, which will grow China's global footprint in new ways and challenge US influence.

SPUTNIK: The Chinese State Council has pledged $1.4tn to build mainland technologies, with venture capital firms posting nearly £600bn. This is a massive level of investment, but can this realise China's dream of self-sufficiency? Has the US got a comparable level of investment outside the $600m in DoD contracts with telecoms and tech companies, or Washington's $1bn R&D fund for emerging tech? What options does each side have?

Abishur Prakash:
The US and China are in different positions. The US needs to stop the rise of Chinese technology to maintain its global dominance, and Beijing needs emerging technologies to challenge US dominance.

For the US, it can restrict exports of critical technologies because it does not depend on Chinese technology to the same degree that China does on the US, which is why Beijing is in overdrive, spending hundreds of billions to develop homegrown technologies. The US, on the other hand, has already developed the technologies that China and the world uses.

Of course, both sides are accelerating their drive to diverge from one another. For example, the US Pentagon has been quietly talking with technology companies to figure out how to manufacture advanced chips as tensions grow with China.

Part of these discussions involve building chip factories in the US, similar to those that exist in Taiwan and South Korea. On the other side, China is firing on all cylinders. It's not just the massive investments China has earmarked, but also the initiatives of its technology companies.

For example, Huawei recently unveiled its "Petal Search" engine, and, while most coverage is that the smartphone app allows Chinese users to find and download banned apps, there is far more to this.

Petal Search is Huawei's own search engine equivalent to Google Search. It allows users to search for anything and, while it primarily uses Microsoft Bing in markets like Spain and Turkey, the entire search query is handled by Huawei. These are the kind of technology projects that will drive the tech divergence between the US and China.
Except, alongside what Washington and Beijing are doing, is a fundamental question. Do both sides understand where the geopolitics of technology, or what I call 'Next Geopolitics', are taking them? Right now, Next Geopolitics has just begun.

Both sides are already taking radical steps, but this is a long-term game. And, it doesn't just involve the US or China, but also Japan, India, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Israel, Australia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Russia.

All of this is to say that the geopolitical playbook the US and China are currently working with is not going to be permanent. It will change, perhaps even be completely redesigned, as more phases of Next Geopolitics begin.

Scientists successfully reverse human aging process in breakthrough study

By Natalie O'Neill - November 20, 2020

Afbeelding

The fountain of youth may be made of air, not water.

Scientists say they’ve successfully reversed the aging process of elderly people through “oxygen therapy” in a first-of-its-kind study.

Researchers from Tel Aviv University used hyperbaric oxygen chambers to target specific cells and DNA linked to shorter lifespans — and found the “Holy Grail” of staying young, according to a press release about the discovery.

During the study, researchers investigated whether the therapy — which involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment — could reverse the effects of aging in 35 people over age 64, according to the study, which was published Wednesday in the journal Aging.

They placed elderly participants in the chamber for 90 minutes a day, five days a week for three months and studied its impact on senescent cells, which are associated with tissue and organ deterioration. They also measured the length of each person’s telomere, a molecule linked to premature cellular aging.

Remarkably, scientists found that the participants’ telomeres had enlarged by an average length of 20 percent while their senescent cells decreased by up to 37 per cent by the end of the trial — the equivalent growing 25 years younger.

“The significant improvement of telomere length shown…provides the scientific community with a new foundation of understanding that aging can, indeed, be targeted and reversed at the basic cellular-biological level,” said the study’s co-author Shai Efrati. “Since telomere shortening is considered the ‘Holy Grail’ of the biology of aging.”

While undergoing the sessions, participants did not change their lifestyles, diets or medications, which have proven in the past to impact a person’s biological age.

The scientists, which include doctors from the Shamir Medical Center, believe the pressurized chamber triggered brief oxygen shortages, which caused cell regeneration.

“Until now, interventions such as lifestyle modifications and intense exercise were shown to have some inhibition effect on the expected telomere length shortening,” said Dr. Amir Hadanny, who co-authored of the study.

“What is remarkable to note in our study, is that in just three months of therapy, we were able to achieve such significant telomere elongation – at rates far beyond any of the current available interventions or lifestyle modifications.”

In 2016, experts discovered they could halt aging in mice by giving them drugs that kill senescent cells.

If scientists could train artificial intelligence (AI) systems to remember the images they capture from their photodetectors and learn from them—all in one package—it would be one step closer to an artificial brain. But the huge data sets and computer power required to make sense of them usually require offloading images elsewhere for processing—unlike a natural brain.

Now, researchers in Australia have developed a neuromorphic imaging chip that performs image pre-processing and recognition by itself (Adv. Mater., doi: 10.1002/adma.202004207). The optically driven chip, made of two-dimensional black phosphorus, demonstrates a way to combine AI software and imaging hardware in a brain-like package that could run autonomously.

An interdisciplinary field
The effort by the team at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, is part of a broader, interdisciplinary field called neuromorphic computing or neuromorphic engineering, which seeks to build electronic systems that process real-time visual and auditory signals like the human brain. First conceived in the 1980s, neuromorphic systems have typically harnessed back-end supercomputers, which don't fit into self-contained robots and consume lots of power. More recent efforts to build neuromorphic chip systems blend optical and electronic technologies.

"In our work, we have adopted a unique path of engineering materials to utilize light for neuromorphic computation, artificial intelligence and machine vision," says Taimur Ahmed, a researcher in RMIT's Micro Nano Research Facility and one of the lead authors. "Using light signals for computation offers several advantages over the traditional electronic signals, such as high processing speed and low power consumption. Our prototype devices allow in-pixel image pre-processing and neuromorphic computation."

The special ingredient
To build their chip, the researchers fabricated thin, vertically-stacked layers of black phosphorus, the most thermodynamically stable allotrope of that element. Inducing oxidation defects in the 2D sheets makes the black phosphorus generate current when exposed to ultraviolet light. According to Ahmed, the three years of experimental work to develop the wavelength-selective photoresponse of the black phosphorus flakes was the most challenging part of the study.

RMIT's proof-of-concept chip consisted of a 2×2 pixel array of oxidized black phosphorus with gold-chromium electrodes and a substrate made from silicon and silicon dioxide. Pulses of 280-nm-wavelength light triggered the pixels to "write," while pulses of 365-nm-wavelength light triggered an "erase" function and reset a pixel's memory. Varying the pulse repetition rates of the triggering beams affected the chip's short-term and long-term memories, a measure of what AI researchers call synaptic plasticity. Although this prototype chip responded to UV light, Ahmed suggests that black phosphorus could be further modified to work at visible frequencies.

A 4-pixel camera is hardly "image forming," but the RMIT researchers ran computer simulations that scaled up the technology to a 28×28 pixel image that would train the chip's neural network to recognize a standard photograph. Ahmed says that the technology could be built out to 28×28 or larger arrays of pixels.

"We are working on further extending this research to develop an AI chip which is fully unsupervised, learns from its environment and makes decisions in real time," Ahmed adds.

Researchers from Colorado State University, USA, Northeast Normal University, China, and University of California Berkeley, USA, also participated in the study.

By Freie Universität Berlin, December 21, 2020

A team of scientists at Freie Universität Berlin has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) method for calculating the ground state of the Schrödinger equation in quantum chemistry. The goal of quantum chemistry is to predict chemical and physical properties of molecules based solely on the arrangement of their atoms in space, avoiding the need for resource-intensive and time-consuming laboratory experiments. In principle, this can be achieved by solving the Schrödinger equation, but in practice this is extremely difficult.

Up to now, it has been impossible to find an exact solution for arbitrary molecules that can be efficiently computed. But the team at Freie Universität has developed a deep learning method that can achieve an unprecedented combination of accuracy and computational efficiency. AI has transformed many technological and scientific areas, from computer vision to materials science. "We believe that our approach may significantly impact the future of quantum chemistry," says Professor Frank Noé, who led the team effort. The results were published in the reputed journal Nature Chemistry.

Central to both quantum chemistry and the Schrödinger equation is the wave function—a mathematical object that completely specifies the behavior of the electrons in a molecule. The wave function is a high-dimensional entity, and it is therefore extremely difficult to capture all the nuances that encode how the individual electrons affect each other. Many methods of quantum chemistry in fact give up on expressing the wave function altogether, instead attempting only to determine the energy of a given molecule. This however requires approximations to be made, limiting the prediction quality of such methods.

Other methods represent the wave function with the use of an immense number of simple mathematical building blocks, but such methods are so complex that they are impossible to put into practice for more than a mere handful of atoms. "Escaping the usual trade-off between accuracy and computational cost is the highest achievement in quantum chemistry," explains Dr. Jan Hermann of Freie Universität Berlin, who designed the key features of the method in the study. "As yet, the most popular such outlier is the extremely cost-effective density functional theory. We believe that deep 'Quantum Monte Carlo,' the approach we are proposing, could be equally, if not more successful. It offers unprecedented accuracy at a still acceptable computational cost."

The deep neural network designed by Professor Noé's team is a new way of representing the wave functions of electrons. "Instead of the standard approach of composing the wave function from relatively simple mathematical components, we designed an artificial neural network capable of learning the complex patterns of how electrons are located around the nuclei," Noé explains. "One peculiar feature of electronic wave functions is their antisymmetry. When two electrons are exchanged, the wave function must change its sign. We had to build this property into the neural network architecture for the approach to work," adds Hermann. This feature, known as 'Pauli's exclusion principle,' is why the authors called their method 'PauliNet.'

Besides the Pauli exclusion principle, electronic wave functions also have other fundamental physical properties, and much of the innovative success of PauliNet is that it integrates these properties into the deep neural network, rather than letting deep learning figure them out by just observing the data. "Building the fundamental physics into the AI is essential for its ability to make meaningful predictions in the field," says Noé. "This is really where scientists can make a substantial contribution to AI, and exactly what my group is focused on."

There are still many challenges to overcome before Hermann and Noé's method is ready for industrial application. "This is still fundamental research," the authors agree, "but it is a fresh approach to an age-old problem in the molecular and material sciences, and we are excited about the possibilities it opens up."

By Philip E. Ross, 23 Dec 2020 | 16:30 GMT

The folks at DeepMind are pushing their methods one step further toward the dream of a machine that learns on its own, the way a child does.

The London-based company, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is officially publishing the research today, in Nature, although it tipped its hand back in November with a preprint in ArXiv. Only now, though, are the implications becoming clear: DeepMind is already looking into real-world applications.

DeepMind won fame in 2016 for AlphaGo, a reinforcement-learning system that beat the game of Go after training on millions of master-level games. In 2018 the company followed up with AlphaZero, which trained itself to beat Go, chess and Shogi, all without recourse to master games or advice. Now comes MuZero, which doesn't even need to be shown the rules of the game.

The new system tries first one action, then another, learning what the rules allow, at the same time noticing the rewards that are proffered—in chess, by delivering checkmate; in Pac-Man, by swallowing a yellow dot. It then alters its methods until it hits on a way to win such rewards more readily—that is, it improves its play. Such learning by observation is ideal for any AI that faces problems that can't be specified easily. In the messy real world—apart from the abstract purity of games—such problems abound.

"We're exploring the application of MuZero to video compression, something that could not have been done with AlphaZero," says Thomas Hubert, one of the dozen co-authors of the Nature article.

"It's because it would be very expensive to do it with AlphaZero," adds Julian Schrittwieser, another co-author.

Other applications under discussion are in self-driving cars (which in Alphabet is handled by its subsidiary, Waymo) and in protein design, the next step beyond protein folding (which sister program AlphaFold recently mastered). Here the goal might be to design a protein-based pharmaceutical that must act on something that is itself an actor, say a virus or a receptor on a cell's surface.

By simultaneously learning the rules and improving its play, MuZero outdoes its DeepMind predecessors in the economical use of data. In the Atari game of Ms. Pac-Man, when MuZero was limited to considering six or seven simulations per move—"a number too small to cover all the available actions," as DeepMind notes, in a statement—it still did quite well.

The system takes a fair amount of computing muscle to train, but once trained, it needs so little processing to make its decisions that the entire operation might be managed on a smartphone. "And even the training isn't so much," says Schrittwieser. "An Atari game would take 2-3 weeks to train on a single GPU."

One reason for the lean operation is that MuZero models only those aspects of its environment—in a game or in the world—that matter in the decision-making process. "After all, knowing an umbrella will keep you dry is more useful to know than modeling the pattern of raindrops in the air," DeepMind notes, in a statement.

Knowing what's important is important. Chess lore relates a story in which a famous grandmaster is asked how many moves ahead he looks. "Only one," intones the champion, "but it is always the best." That is, of course, an exaggeration, yet it holds a kernel of truth: Strong chessplayers generally examine lines of analysis that span only a few dozen positions, but they know at a glance which ones are worth looking at.

Children can learn a general pattern after exposure to a very few instances—inferring Niagara from a drop of water, as it were. This astounding power of generalization has intrigued psychologists for generations; the linguist Noam Chomsky once argued that children had to be hard-wired with the basics of grammar because otherwise the "poverty of the stimulus" would have made it impossible for them to learn how to talk. Now, though, this idea is coming into question; maybe children really do glean much from very little.

Perhaps machines, too, are in the early stages of learning how to learn in that fashion.

IBM researchers have developed a way to dramatically reduce latency in Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems by using light, instead of electricity, to create ultra-fast computing.

The IBM team, along with scientists from the universities of Oxford, Muenster and Exeter, achieved this by using photonic integrated circuits that use light instead of electricity for computing.

The light-based tensor core could be used, among other applications, for autonomous vehicles.

In a Nature paper, they have detailed combination of photonic — demonstrating a photonic tensor core that can perform computations with unprecedented, ultra-low latency and compute density.

"Our tensor core runs computations at a processing speed higher than ever before. It performs key computational primitives associated with AI models such as deep neural networks for computer vision in less than a microsecond, with remarkable areal and energy efficiency," IBM said in a blog post.

In 2015, researchers from Oxford University, the University of Münster and the University of Exeter developed a photonic phase change memory device that could be written to and read from optically.

The new photonic tensor core can perform a so-called convolution operation in a single time step.

Convolution is a mathematical operation on two functions that outputs a third function expressing how the shape of one is changed by the other.

"We use a measure called TOPS to assess the number of Operations Per Second, in Trillions, that a chip is able to process" said Abu Sebastian from IBM Research.

This is just the beginning.

"We expect that with reasonable scaling assumptions, we can achieve an unprecedented PetaMAC (thousand trillion MAC operations) per second per mm2," IBM said.

In comparison, the compute density associated with state-of-the-art AI processors is less than 1 TOPS/mm2, meaning less than a trillion operations per second per mm2," IBM said.

In what is a major leap forward in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), an international team of researchers led by Swinburne University of Technology has developed the world's most powerful neuromorphic processor for AI. It operates at an astonishing rate of more than 10 trillion operations per second (TeraOps/s), meaning it can process ultra-large-scale data.

The work was published in the journal Nature.

Led by Swinburne's Professor David Moss, Dr. Xingyuan Xu, and Distinguished Professor Arnan Mitchell from RMIT University, the team accelerated computing speed and processing power. They were able to create an optical neuromorphic processor capable of operating over 1,000 times faster than any previous ones. The system can also process ultra-large-scale images, which is important for facial recognition as previous optical processors have failed in this regard.

Professor Moss is Director of Swinburne's Optical Sciences Centre, and he was named a top Australian researcher in physics and mathematics in the field of optics and photonics by The Australian.

"This breakthrough was achieved with ‘optical micro-combs,' as was our world-record internet data speed reported in May 2020," he said.

Other Top Processors and Micro-combs
Top electronic processors like the Google TPU can operate over 100 TeraOps/s. However, it requires tens of thousands of parallel processors, whereas the team's optical system only relies on a single processor. They achieved this by using a new technique that involved simultaneously interleaving the data in time, wavelength, and spatial dimensions through an integrated micro-comb source.

For those who are unaware of micro-combs, they are new devices consisting of hundreds of high-quality infrared lasers on a single chip. Compared to other optical sources, micro-combs are far faster, lighter, and cheaper.

"In the 10 years since I co-invented them, integrated micro-comb chips have become enormously important and it is truly exciting to see them enabling these huge advances in information communication and processing," Professor Moss says. "Micro-combs offer enormous promise for us to meet the world's insatiable need for information."

Processor of the Future
Dr. Xu was co-lead author of the study and is a Swinburne alum and post-doctoral fellow with the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Department at Monash University.

"This processor can serve as a universal ultrahigh bandwidth front end for any neuromorphic hardware – optical or electronic based – bringing massive-data machine learning for real-time ultrahigh bandwidth data within reach," Dr. Xu says.

"We're currently getting a sneak-peak of how the processors of the future will look. It's really showing us how dramatically we can scale the power of our processors through the innovative use of microcombs," he continues.

According to RMIT's Professor Mitchell, "This technology is applicable to all forms of processing and communications — it will have a huge impact. Long term we hope to realise fully integrated systems on a chip, greatly reducing cost and energy consumption."

Professor Damien Hicks supports the research team and is from Swinburne and the Walter and Elizabeth Hall Institute.

"Convolutional neural networks have been central to the artificial intelligence revolution, but existing silicon technology increasingly presents a bottleneck in processing speed and energy efficiency," says Professor Hicks.

"This breakthrough shows how a new optical technology makes such networks faster and more efficient and is a profound demonstration of the benefits of cross-disciplinary thinking, in having the inspiration and courage to take an idea from one field and using it to solve a fundamental problem in another," he continues.

De grote denkfout hoor je op 3:12: "I should be able to scale it to a larger version".

At the start of the 1970s, aircraft were particularly inefficient and consumed twice as much fuel per person-mile than passenger cars (link.reuters.com/sek64w).

Since then, however, the amount of energy consumed per passenger-mile by aircraft has fallen by almost 80 percent while the efficiency of driving has improved by less than 17 percent.

Bron: Xiaomi

QCLs Exhibit Extreme Pulses

Extreme events occur in many observable contexts. Nature is a prolific source: rogue water waves surging high above the swell, monsoon rains, wildfire, etc. From climate science to optics, physicists have classified the characteristics of extreme events, extending the notion to their respective domains of expertise. For instance, extreme events can take place in telecommunication data streams. In fiber-optic communications where a vast number of spatio-temporal fluctuations can occur in transoceanic systems, a sudden surge is an extreme event that must be suppressed, as it can potentially alter components associated with the physical layer or disrupt the transmission of private messages.

Recently, extreme events have been observed in quantum cascade lasers, as reported by researchers from Télécom Paris (France) in collaboration with UC Los Angeles (USA) and TU Darmstad (Germany). The giant pulses that characterize these extreme events can contribute the sudden, sharp bursts necessary for communication in neuromorphic systems inspired by the brain's powerful computational abilities. Based on a quantum cascade laser (QCL) emitting mid-infrared light, the researchers developed a basic optical neuron system operating 10,000× faster than biological neurons. Their report is published in Advanced Photonics.

Giant pulses, fine tuning

Olivier Spitz, Télécom Paris research fellow and first author on the paper, notes that the giant pulses in QCLs can be triggered successfully by adding a "pulse-up excitation," a short-time small-amplitude increase of bias current. Senior author Frédéric Grillot, Professor at Télécom Paris and the University of New Mexico, explains that this triggering ability is of paramount importance for applications such as optical neuron-like systems, which require optical bursts to be triggered in response to a perturbation.

The team's optical neuron system demonstrates behaviors like those observed in biological neurons, such as thresholding, phasic spiking, and tonic spiking. Fine tuning of modulation and frequency allows control of time intervals between spikes. Grillot explains, "The neuromorphic system requires a strong, super-threshold stimulus for the system to fire a spiking response, whereas phasic and tonic spiking correspond to single or continuous spike firing following the arrival of a stimulus." To replicate the various biological neuronal responses, interruption of regular successions of bursts corresponding to neuronal activity is also required.

Quantum cascade laser

Grillot notes that the findings reported by his team demonstrate the increasingly superior potential of quantum cascade lasers compared to standard diode lasers or VCSELs, for which more complex techniques are currently required to achieve neuromorphic properties.

Experimentally demonstrated for the first time in 1994, quantum cascade lasers were originally developed for use under cryogenic temperatures. Their development has advanced rapidly, allowing use at warmer temperatures, up to room temperature. Due to the large number of wavelengths they can achieve (from 3 to 300 microns), QCLs contribute to many industrial applications such as spectroscopy, optical countermeasures, and free-space communications.

According to Grillot, the physics involved in QCLs is totally different than that in diode lasers. "The advantage of quantum cascade lasers over diode lasers comes from the sub-picosecond electronic transitions among the conduction-band states (subbands) and a carrier lifetime much shorter than the photon lifetime," says Grillot. He remarks that QCLs exhibit completely different light emission behaviors under optical feedback, including but not limited to giant pulse occurrences, laser responses to modulation, and frequency comb dynamics.

In opleiding, in innovatie.
