Lag BaOmer in Meron

‘The dead were all around us:’ Survivors describe Mount Meron crush horror

At least 44 killed, 150 wounded during stampede blamed on a slippery walkway at massive ultra-Orthodox event to celebrate Lag B’Omer; children said among the victims

For the tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews who gathered in Mount Meron on Thursday, this was supposed to be a joyous occasion. It was the first major public gathering allowed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and an event commemorating the end of another plague, some 2,000 years ago.

Instead, it ended with one of the greatest peacetime disasters in Israel’s history, with at least 44 people, including small children, crushed to death and dozens injured.

Witnesses and survivors described the panic and the fear amid an apparent stampede, with many struggling for breath, trapped next to the dead, and waiting long minutes for rescue.

More than 100,000 people were attending the annual gathering in the northern Galilee, which includes visits to the gravesite of the second-century sage Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai and massive bonfires on the mountainside.

A bonfire lighting ceremony for the Toldot Aharon Hassidic sect was being held at the pilgrimage area, close to Bar Yohai’s tomb. As the dense crowds began to exit, people apparently slipped on a crowded walkway and down a flight of stairs, falling on those below and precipitating a stampede and fatal crushing.

Some 20,000 people streamed down a narrow walkway between two walls during the event. On the ground was slick metal flooring, which caused some people to fall underfoot during the rush for the exit.

Witnesses and survivors described the horror.

“We were going in to see the bonfire lighting, suddenly there was a wave coming out. Our bodies were swept along by themselves. People were thrown up in the air, others were crushed on the ground,” David, a survivor, told the Ynet news site.

“There was a kid there who kept pinching my leg, fighting for his life. We waited to be rescued for 15-20 minutes in this crazy, terrible crush. it was awful.”

“A policeman pulled me out,” Meir, who was lightly injured, told Ynet from his hospital bed. “He protected me and made sure I would not be trampled on until I was evacuated.”

“It felt like an eternity, the dead were all around us,” he said.

Eli Beer, head of the Hatzalah rescue services organization told Army Radio that there were a number of children among the victims.

“To my sorrow, we found small children who had been crushed, we tried to resuscitate them and managed in a few cases to save them,” he said.

“We have to wake up, it’s shocking how many people were allowed to enter,” he said.

Footage from the walkway showed shoes, hats, baby strollers, smashed eyeglasses and water bottles strewn on the ground. Metal railings were torn from the ground.

Video from the scene showed the desperate throngs trying to get out, people frantically trying to resuscitate victims, and long lines of bodies, covered in thermal blankets, waiting to be taken away.

Other survivors described their terror.

“We were walking out, everything was flowing, suddenly it stopped,” a survivor identified as Zohar told Channel 12. “Everyone was pressed up against each other and we did not understand why. I lifted up my head and I saw police blocking the entrance, I shouted to them ‘people are dying here.'”

“People lost the color in their faces,” said Zohar. “I was under the bleachers, I tried to go up toward all the chaos when I heard banging above, thud, thud, and people shouting ‘escape, escape, people are dying.'”

“People fell from above and crushed each other, they squashed each other. people just fell, I will never forget the banging sounds, people flying all over,” he said.

At least 44 people were crushed to death and more than 65 people hurt, including many in critical condition, medics said.

The Magen David Adom rescue service said its paramedics evacuated 100 people, including, 18 in a serious condition, two who were moderately hurt, and 80 lightly injured.

MDA Director-General Eli Bin told the Ynet news site that the wounded were being evacuated to the Ziv hospital in Safed, the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, Rambam hospital in Haifa, Poriya hospital in Tiberias, and Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem.

Amid the chaos, cellphone networks collapsed and rescuers struggled to reunite lost children with their parents.

A Zaka emergency rescue officer speaking at the service’s field hospital at the site told Channel 12 news that there was chaos at the scene, with parents separated from children.

He said Zaka was trying to gather all the children who had become separated from their parents at the Zaka facility, and bring them together.

“We are trying to locate people who are believed to be missing… to organize a register of names,” he said.

Mobile telephones were not working, he said, and the situation was chaotic.

“There are more than 30 children here right now… whose mothers and fathers aren’t answering the phone.”

“Without getting graphic,” he said, “I’ve been with Zaka for decades. I’ve never seen anything like this… We don’t know exactly what happened, but the result is unthinkable.”

“The rescue teams were called to one of the concerts near Bar Yochai’s tomb, where there was a terrible crush near a building. There were dozens trapped on a nearby stand and it took time to evacuate them,” Heller said.

“There are fatalities, it is a very terrible tragedy,” he said, adding that it was a very complicated rescue effort that was still ongoing throughout the night.

Video from the scene showed rescue workers were attempting to set up a field hospital and dozens of ambulances could be seen trying to navigate through the huge crowds.

At around midnight Thursday, organizers had estimated that some 100,000 people were at the site, with an additional 100,000 expected to arrive by Friday morning.

Police later shut down the event and were evacuating all the participants. Roadblocks were set up to prevent people from arriving at the scene.

Earlier police struggled to clear the crowds from the scene to allow access to ambulances. Loudspeakers called in Yiddish and Hebrew for people to make way and let rescuers come through.

Israel’s Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, who was on one of the stages at the time of the apparent collapse, remained there with other leading rabbis, saying psalms for the wounded.

President Reuven Rivlin tweeted that he was watching developments with great trepidation and praying for those who were hurt.

Netanyahu called the incident “a terrible disaster,” said “everyone is praying for the recovery of the injured,” and offered his support to rescue workers at the scene.

The huge gathering, the largest in Israel since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, had already sparked health fears.

Due to the large crowds, police said they were unable to enforce coronavirus restrictions at the site.

Health Ministry officials had urged Israelis not to travel to Mount Meron, worried the festivities could lead to mass coronavirus contagion.

Some 5,000 police officers were said to have been deployed at the event.

Re: Lag BaOmer in Meron

Hezbollah supporters, pro-Palestinian social media celebrate Meron deaths

While Israelis are in mourning, the pro-Hezbollah and extremist pro-Palestinian social media accounts are calling this a “blessed Friday” posting photos of the body bags.

While in Israel people stood in long lines to donate blood after the tragedy on Lag Ba’omer, uniting Arabs and Jews who both mourned the victims, there were media in the region and anti-Israel voices that celebrated the deaths. While it is difficult to quantify all the hatred against Israel, it was clear that some Arabic language media reported the dead as “settlers,” while others included a large number of comments supporting the fatalities.

Among supporters of Hezbollah, for instance, there were tweets supporting the tragedy. “More than 20 terrorist murderers occupying Palestine dead,” wrote one account. The same account, with more than 2,000 followers, mocked the idea that the victims were civilians and posted a photo of an Orthodox Jews crowd at Meron, calling them a “terrified terrorist mob.”

“We are celebrating the deaths of Zionists,” wrote another pro-Palestinian account that has more than 3,000 followers. Another account with 24,000 followers approved and called for stabbings, asking God to “increase this night of hell fire.” Another Lebanese account put a heart over a photo of the dead from Meron, signaling support for their deaths. This type of reply was common.

Another account replied that they were happy to hear Israelis had waited for minutes trying to reach their dead children. “Sitting on their phones for half a minute, God is great, praise be to God.” The term “God is great” or “Allahu Akbar,” while it can be used as a way to honor God, is also said by Jihadist extremists during terror attacks when celebrating the murder of the innocent. Twitter appeared to take no action against those celebrating the deaths or subsequent tweets celebrating a “sacred stabbing” attack.

With dozens of injured teens, Jerusalem hospital reels from synagogue disaster

After a bleacher in a prayer hall collapsed Sunday, killing 2 and injuring 167, Hadassah saw the type of influx only seen after terror attacks
Afbeelding
Tending to dozens of teenagers with spinal and other injuries, a Jerusalem hospital is juggling emergency prep for the ongoing security situation with care for the many injured in a synagogue disaster on Sunday.

Two people were killed and 167 injured, including five seriously, when a bleacher collapsed under celebrants at the Givat Ze’ev synagogue of the Karlin Hasidic sect just before the start of the Shavuot festival. The synagogue is located in an under-construction building and had not been approved for use, the police commander of the Jerusalem District told reporters.

Yechiel Michel Gleiberman, 13, and Mordechai Binyamin Rubinstein, 23, both from Beitar Illit, were buried in a single Jerusalem funeral just after midnight. Rubinstein left behind a wife and a daughter who was just a few months old.

“Now, two days after the incident, the trauma faced by our volunteers is still reverberating in our minds,” paramedic Dov Maisel, vice president of operations at the United Hatzalah rescue service, told The Times of Israel on Tuesday.

He said that the incident is particularly raw, coming so soon after the fatal April 30 crush at an ultra-Orthodox gathering on Mount Meron. “Many of the people who responded on Sunday night were also present at the tragedy in Meron,” Maisel said.

He added, “Throughout our organization’s 15-year history, I cannot recall a time when we faced two mass casualty incidents of this magnitude in such a short time.”

At Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center doctors were caring for 42 patients who are still hospitalized there, six in serious condition and most with medical issues that require highly specialized attention.

It’s unusual for a hospital to have such a large influx of patients with the types of injuries sustained, and Hadassah doctors are working flat out. “Seeing the masses come in together, all with similar injuries, was the kind of thing we have only seen in a very big terror attack,” senior doctor Josh Schroeder told The Times of Israel.
“Over last few days we have been focused on the ongoing violence, and suddenly this came out of nowhere,” he said.

“What the patients went through was akin to falling from the second floor of a house, so we saw see broken arms, broken legs, fractures of the spine, and head injuries. We have some 10 patients with fractured spines.”

Almost 150 people arrived after the tragedy, and some 44 are still in the hospital. “Now it seems that the vast majority, after surgical interventions, will go back to their regular lives — but it could take months,” Schroeder said.

“Those with spine injuries, at least the ones we have been operating on, should get their lives back.” There are several people with significant head injuries, and he said it was hard to predict whether they will make a good recovery, though he is “optimistic.”

He said the hospital was initially “overwhelmed” by the influx, but it managed to cope by bringing in almost 200 extra staff within minutes. “It happened at the start of the Shavuot holiday, and suddenly we needed a very full staff, with everyone from secretaries to people pushing patients into surgery and anesthesiologists,” said Schroeder. “Text messages went out and staff arrived quickly.”

Extra manpower was needed as each patient required extra verification. That was because Israelis normally arrive at the hospital with their identity cards, but religious Jews do not tend to carry documents on Sabbath or festivals.
“It was a situation where no one came with an ID card because it was the festival, and we had to be extremely careful regarding identification,” .

“But we managed the influx and now it’s a matter of giving the best possible care to give everyone the strongest possible chance of recovery,” Schroeder said.
