http://www.independent.ie/national-news ... 13479.html
Libel and blasphemy bill passed by the Dail July 09 2009
The Defamation Bill, which also introduces a new crime of blasphemous libel, will come into operation after it is passed by the Seanad later this week and signed into law by President Mary McAleese.

The legislation, which the media industry broadly supports, also aims to ensure that the recently established Press Council operates as efficiently as possible.

It also enables newspapers to offer an apology without risking an admission of liability, and to defend libel actions by arguing that a story was in the public interest.

The new laws are expected to be in full operation by October.

In recent months, the stalled legislation was the subject of major debate when Justice Minister Dermot Ahern announced the introduction of a new crime of blasphemous libel. He argued that a new definition was required by the Constitution.

Under the changes, the maximum fine for blasphemy will be cut from €100,000 to €25,000.
Sinn Fein's Aengus O Snodaigh earlier argued that the legislation should be changed so that TDs who took a legal case or who were sued could remain in public office if they ended up bankrupt.
Under current rules, if a TD becomes bankrupt, they are debarred from elected office.

Ireland: blasphemy law a backward step 07 Jul 2009
If this law is passed, Atheist Ireland will respond by publishing a blasphemous statement in order to test the law and highlight its absurdity. We believe that people need protection from harm, but ideas and beliefs should always be open to challenge [...]
the Supreme Court found that the 1961 law was unenforceable because it did not define blasphemy. So, in effect, Ireland has never had an enforceable blasphemy law under the 1937 Constitution.[...]

Here are three reasons why this law is both silly and dangerous:

Reason One: The proposed law does not protect religious belief; it incentivises outrage and it criminalises free speech. Under this proposed law, if a person expresses one belief about gods, and other people think that this insults a different belief about gods, then these people can become outraged, and this outrage can make it illegal for the first person to express his or her beliefs.

The problematic behaviour here is the outrage, not the expression of different beliefs. Instead of incentivising outrage, we should be educating people to respond in a healthier manner when somebody expresses a belief that they find insulting. More worryingly, this law would encourage, reinforce and protect the type of orchestrated outrage that Islamic fundamentalists have directed against cartoonists and novelists.

Reason Two: The proposed law treats religious beliefs as more valuable than secular beliefs and scientific thinking. Personally, I find it abusive and insulting that the Christian Bible suggests that a woman should be stoned to death for not being a virgin on her wedding night, or that it is okay to kill your slave if he dies slowly, or that effeminate people are unrighteous, or that women must not teach and must learn in silence
If enough atheists are outraged by these passages, should the Christian Bible be banned? I do not believe that the Bible should be banned, and neither should discussion of the Bible in terms that cause Christians to be outraged.

Reason Three: We should be removing 1930s religious references from the Irish constitution, not legislating to enforce them. Today, under the Irish constitution, you cannot become president or be appointed as a judge unless you take a religious oath asking God to direct and sustain you in your work.

http://www.palibandaily.com/2009/07/09/ ... y-illegal/
How does this impact free speech? Just don’t be rude.

* Atheists can be prosecuted for saying that God is imaginary. That causes outrage.
* Pagans can be prosecuted for saying they left Christianity because God is violent and bloodthirsty, promotes genocide, and permits slavery.
* Christians can be prosecuted for saying that Allah is a moon god, or for drawing a picture of Mohammed, or for saying that Islam is a violent religion which breeds terrorists.
* Jews can be prosecuted for saying Jesus isn’t the Messiah.

Is it really THAT big a deal?

Ireland’s Blasphemy Bill not only criminalizes free speech, it also gives the police the authority to confiscate anything deemed “blasphemous”. They may enter and search any premises, with force if needed, upon “reasonable suspicion” that such materials are present.

* The local Freethinkers society, with its copies of Hitchens’ God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.
* The video store, with copies of The God Who Wasn’t There.
* The history teacher, who uses The Dark Side of Christian History to teach her class.
* The library, with its collection of books deemed blasphemous.
* Even the homeowner who lets the wrong person know he has a copy of Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses could find his door broken in by the Thought Police, his bookshelves ransacked, and his books burning in the front yard!

Satirizing religion in any way, shape, or form, if it “causes outrage”, is now a prosecutable offense in Ireland. Saying anything negative about a religion, if it “causes outrage”, can now be prosecuted as a crime. Just like in Muslim countries.

Witness the return of the Dark Ages.

Update: The bill passed the Seanad on Friday, July 10, by a single vote. From the Irish Times:

Men wordt wakker in sommige EU landen.
Spoiler! :
Irish government to pay immigrants to go home

Recession-crippled Republic offers cash to non-EU nationals who agree to leave country.

Ireland is offering money to immigrants to leave the recession-crippled Republic. The Irish Department of Justice has confirmed that it is opening an EU-funded project to persuade foreign workers and asylum seekers to return to their country of origin.

A spokeswoman told the Observer this weekend that the scheme will only apply to non-EU nationals living in the Republic and would involve the department spending almost €600,000 this year to pay for immigrants and their families to return to nations outside the European Union.

"The grants will not be given to individuals but rather the scheme will operate through projects and organisations," she added.

"They [immigrants] can apply for the fund only through organisations and community groups. It is the first time we have introduced the scheme."

The department has made it clear it had no projected figure in mind as to the number of immigrants the government hopes will take up the repatriation grants.

Advertisements promoting the scheme were published in Irish national newspapers on Friday. Application forms will also be available for non-EU nationals in the main immigration centre on Burgh Quay, Dublin.

The voluntary repatriation programme comes at a time of rising fears about the cost of immigration into Ireland.

Last week the mayor of Limerick caused a political storm when he called for the deportation of EU nationals who were out of work for more than three months and were claiming social welfare benefits.

Kevin Kiely said: "We are borrowing €400 million per week to maintain our own residents and we can't afford it.

"During the good times it was grand, but we can't afford the current situation unless the EU is willing to step in and pay for non-nationals."

However the mayor was forced to withdraw his remarks after a storm of protests. His own party, Fine Gael, distanced itself from his comments.

In a subsequent statement, Kiely said: "I still am of the opinion and so are others, who have approached me in recent days, that there is abuse of the Irish social welfare system.

"But in seeking to highlight this I inadvertently caused offence to others, which I very much regret."

During the latter years of the Celtic Tiger boom Ireland underwent a demographic revolution in terms of its ethnic make-up. Up until the early 1990s Ireland was 95% white and Catholic.

However, according to the Republic's central statistics office, about 18% of Ireland's inhabitants are now non-nationals.

Most of them are from eastern Europe, China, Brazil and west Africa or are British citizens who have settled on the island.

Some academics, such as Dr Bryan Fanning of University College Dublin, estimate that the real figure is more than 20%, meaning Ireland's "foreign" citizens make up over one fifth of the Republic's entire population.

The majority of the immigrants who arrived during the boom years were enticed to Ireland to fill vacancies in the construction, retail and tourist sectors – the main parts of the Irish economy to be severely hit by the current recession.

Wat triest. Dublin City Council raises Palestinian flag 'in solidarity' Door dit soort mensen die Islam verheerlijken gaat Europa kapot.
The provocative gesture was proposed by a known pro-Palestinian councilman who claims that Israel is 'an apartheid regime' to mark 50 years of 'Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza.'

The Dublin City Council has raised the Palestinian flag "in solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are living under a brutal Israeli apartheid regime, on the 50th anniversary of the occupation."

The decision was made Tuesday to show solidarity with the Palestinians and the flag will fly over the iconic building for one month.

Initially, the decision was to raise the flag on May 15 "to mark 50 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza," but the decision was ultimately implemented earlier.

The proposal was put forth by John Lyons, who also organized pro-Palestinian protests in Ireland in the past. He explained that he proposed the flag-flying as a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

"The Irish people have held large demonstrations to support the Palestinians in recent years. Israel is an apartheid regime. If raising the flag was to cause a bit of a debate amongst some people who are unsure of it flying over City Hall, I think that's a welcome development. I think that today more and more people think that the way Israel behaves drastically undermines the cause of its establishment," said Lyons.

Israel's ambassador to Ireland, Zeev Boker, had sent a letter to the council members in an attempt to convince them to oppose it.

Boker wrote that the decision is politically charged and demonstrates a one-sided approach to the conflict. "Dublin has a proud tradition of receiving new communities and I know of many Israelis who have come to Dublin to work and decided to stay. What kind of message will that send to those Israelis who are now proud to call Dublin their home?"

"Members of the Jewish community in Ireland are also concerned about the negative message emanating from flying the (Palestinian) flag," Boker added in his letter. "The embassy will be happy to help promote any other initiative that will bring Israelis and Palestinians together and promote understandings between the two peoples."

Council member Anne Feeney proposed a compromise whereby both the Palestinian and Israeli flags would be flown over the City Council building, but her proposal was struck down by a majority vote of 43-11.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a response to the decision, saying, "Unfortunately, the balanced majority allowed a vocal minority that wants attention to use its power to promote a one-sided and biased agenda. The decision that the council and the capital of Ireland took raises the white flag (of surrender) to terrorist organizations, hate and extortion. This decision besmirches the good name of the city and its citizens. This decision may ultimately cast a shadow over Ireland's ability to play a useful role in any future process in the Middle East. We expect the responsible political and media bodies to shake off this extreme and unbalanced position."

Irish police halt prosecution of Stephen Fry for blasphemy
Irish police have halted a prosecution against Stephen Fry for blasphemy because the Garda Síochána could not find enough people to be outraged over the actor’s anti-God remarks on Irish TV.

Only one viewer made a formal complaint against Fry over comments he made on a programme with Irish broadcasting legend Gay Byrne back in 2015.
One individual complaint alone cannot result in a prosecution under the legislation.

Fry told Byrne he could never respect “a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world … full of injustice”.

The sole man who complained to the Garda under the terms of the 2009 blasphemy law previously told the Irish Independent: “I did my civic duty in reporting it. The guards did their duty in investigating it. I am satisfied with the result.”

Plan to remove imam from Longford mosque prompted assault - court hears
A court has heard claims of how the planned removal of an imam at a Co Longford mosque led to a row witnessed by up to 200 Muslims more than two years ago.
Muhammad Abid Hussain, Quasim Rasool, Ahsan Rasool, Ghulan Rasool, Muhammad Khalid, and Mohammad Tariq, all of Cloverwell in Edgeworthstown, were all charged with assaulting Muhammad Asim.
All six pleaded not guilty to the charges before the court.
[...]
Garda Michael Belton said he noticed a commotion taking place at about 2pm shortly after members of the local media had gone inside.
He said once inside, he observed what he described as the “remnants of a row” during which he approached the victim, Mr Asim.
“He (victim) was bleeding from the head,” he said.
“He looked like a man who had got a bit of a beating and his robe was ripped apart.”

[...]
The garda said during the course of the ensuing investigation, he canvassed up to 40 witnesses for statements.
Many of those requests, he said, were spurned due to the sense of humiliation the entire episode had brought on the local Muslim community.
“People were more ashamed as to what had happened and where it happened, and they were not forthcoming,” he said.
[...]
“There were women and young children there the other side of the curtain and my own family there. People were crying and shaking,” he said.

Islamic State fanatic jailed for building ‘mini militia’ of child terrorists

An unqualified teacher who trained a “mini militia” of children for terrorist attacks in London has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 25 years.

Islamic State (IS) fanatic Umar Haque, 25, planned to use guns and a car bomb to strike 30 high-profile targets including Big Ben, the Queen’s Guard and Westfield shopping centre.

He enlisted helpers at the Ripple Road mosque in Barking, east London, where he secretly brainwashed 16 children as young as 11 through terrorism role play and exercises.

The boys have been left “traumatised” from being shown gory IS propaganda by Haque.

The defendant had also admitted playing an IS film to pupils at the Lantern of Knowledge fee-paying school in Leyton where he had worked, the Old Bailey heard.

Sentencing, Mr Justice Haddon-Cave said Haque wanted to do “something big” and his ambition was “extreme and alarming”.

The worst aspect was the deliberate and sustained grooming of children to join a “mini militia” unbeknown to their parents who had paid for after school classes at the mosque.
He is a “very real” threat to the young and old alike, the judge said.

“Haque was a dangerous liar. He is intelligent, articulate and persuasive with an easy smile. He is narcissistic and clearly enjoys the power he wields over others.”

The judge told Haque: “You have violated the Koran and Islam by your actions as well as the law of all civilised people. It is hoped you will come to realise this.”

Haque ranted about “domination”, “hunger and insecurity” as he was sent down.

Fundraiser Abuthaher Mamun, 19, who was said to have “renounced” Haque’s extremist view of Islam, was jailed for 12 years with a further year on extended licence.

Haque’s confidant Muhammad Abid, 27, a qualified cupping therapist, was handed four years and three months in prison for failing to report the plot.
Spoiler! :
The trial had heard how police and MI5 had been on to Haque since he tried to travel to join IS in Syria in April 2016 but was stopped at Heathrow.

In bugged conversations, he talked about being inspired by the Westminster Bridge atrocity in March last year.
Haque said: “We are here to cause terror, my brother. We are a death squad sent by Allah and his messengers to avenge my Arab brothers’ blood …”

His handwritten hit list included the Queen’s Guard, courts, Transport for London, Shia Muslims, Westfield, City banks, Heathrow, Parliament, Big Ben, the media, embassies and the English Defence League or Britain First.

In the months before his arrest, he bragged about recruiting 16 children, telling Ripple Road youngsters he intended to die a martyr and IS was “good”.

One of the youngsters later told police: “Umar has been teaching us how to fight, do push-ups, given strength and within six years he was planning to do a big attack on London.

“He wants a group of 300 men. He’s training us now so by the time I’m in Year 10 (aged 14-15) we will be physically strong enough to fight.”

Prosecutor Mark Heywood QC said a specialist social worker had assessed nine of the boys affected by Haque’s indoctrination.

He said: “As a result of their contact with the defendant Haque, the children had spoken primarily of their confusion and frustration surrounding Islamic State, their religion and non Muslims, specifically on war and killing of others.

“Although they are clear what they saw was wrong, they are left conflicted and without answers which leads them to be particularly vulnerable to grooming.

“Some speak of having flashbacks of the videos and nightmares centred around fear of death and punishment in the after life, perhaps in reference to (the video) of the young boy seen buried and in a grave.”

One father said he was “distressed and worried for the future of Muslim kids and unsure who to trust and who not to” after finding out his son had been groomed.

The Charity Commission has opened an inquiry into the Lantern of Knowledge Educational Trust.

An NSPCC spokesman said: “Haque used his position of trust as a smokescreen to try and recruit an army of young people in his care to help him carry out the atrocities he planned.

“The methods used to try and radicalise them included fear and intimidation – a form of child abuse. But it is thanks to the bravery of those victims who spoke out about what they endured that Haque is now behind bars for a very long time.”

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon said: “I welcome today’s sentences, which have ensured that three men complicit in a plot to radicalise vulnerable young children and use them to attack businesses and communities in London are now in prison.

“Haque was a dangerous man who was inspired by attacks in Europe and Westminster. He wanted to orchestrate numerous attacks at once, using guns, knives, bombs and large cars to kill innocent
people.”

Pakistaanse toestanden in Ierland, Dublin.
Een verslag uit het leven gegrepen.
Woman 'verbally abused and thrown off her bike' outside Dublin mosque

A woman has told how she was allegedly verbally abused and attacked while out for a cycle in Blanchardstown last Friday.

The woman, known only as Rosie, claims she was out for a cycle when she passed the Shuhadaa Centre and was confronted by two men.

After getting into a disagreement about the woman was pushed off her bike down an embankment and almost into the path of oncoming traffic.

Rose told Dublin Talks on 98fm: "I just went for a cycle. And in between the IT college and Riversdale college is a mosque.

"There were so many people in front of me and I was ringing the bell, I was along the cycle path.

"Some people moved past and smiled and a lot of people, mostly men, didn't move so I had no where to go.

"So I was slowing down and had to get off the bike and a man in his 50s turned around and started shouting 'you stupid woman, this is the footpath, the footpath' while pointing at the cycle path.

"I took out my earphones and said 'no sorry this is the cycle path, I'm using the cycle path' but he kept saying 'stupid woman this is the foot path'.

"I was just shocked and there was so many people there, people were coming out(of the mosque) in their droves.

"He put his two arms out and had an annoyed look on his face.

"There was a man in his 20s with him and he started hitting his own face and saying 'white woman, white woman' to which I responded 'yes I am a white woman what does that have to do with the cycle lane?'

"I started to cycle again and the young man kept saying 'stupid white woman' and tapping his face.

"The older man stood aside and as soon as I thought he was letting me past he got his two arms and sent me flying.

"I couldn't control the bike and all I could see was oncoming traffic, I was trying to stop the bike flying onto the middle of the road and it came down on top of me.

"And I think I just burst into the tears.

"Most of the people just kept walking. I just remember these two men running over to me and helped me up and lifted the bike up for me."

Headscarves and turbans to be allowed as part of Garda uniform

Female Muslim gardaí will be permitted to wear headscarves under new rules due to be announced by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris.

Mr Harris has sanctioned alterations to the garda uniform code to allow the incorporation of certain items of clothing relating to religious groups.

Under the new rules, members of the Sikh religion will be permitted to wear turbans and Muslim women will be allowed wear a partial hijab or headscarf.

The burka and the niqab, which are worn by some Muslim women and cover up much more of the body and face, will continue to be prohibited while on duty.

The newly-sanctioned garments will be supplied by the Garda and will come in the standard blue colour to match the rest of the garda uniform.

The move is aimed at increasing the recruitment of ethnic minorities into the force. According to figures released last year by the Garda Representative Association, just 0.4 per cent of gardaí, or one in 240, come from an ethnic minority compared to six per cent in the UK.

The Irish population is made up of 82.2 per cent “white Irish” with the remainder coming from various ethnic minorities, according to the most recent census.

The association called the lack of diversity “a ticking time bomb” and said more recruitment is required to better reflect the Irish population and to prevent minority communities from becoming marginalised and turning to extremism.

There are about 100 gardaí and reserve gardaí from non-Irish backgrounds. The two non-Irish nationalities with the highest Garda representation are Chinese and Polish. It is not know how many gardaí, if any, are Muslim or Sikh.

Mr Harris’ decision follows the lead of many UK and US police forces in allowing certain head coverings aside from the standard issue hat.

Legal challenge
It comes six years after a Sikh man lost a legal case asking that he be allowed wear a turban as a member of the Garda Reserve.

Ravinder Singh Oberoi had completed most of the required training to be a member of the reserve when he was told he would have to wear a full Garda uniform and could not wear a turban.

He challenged this before an Equality Tribunal and the High Court. The High Court ruled the Garda was not guilty of employee discrimination as Garda Reservists are legally volunteers rather than employees.

“In order to encourage candidates from minority communities, An Garda Síochána will consider alterations to the Garda uniform to take account of religious and ethnic requirements subject to operational, and health and safety obligations,” the force said in a statement.

“For example, An Garda Síochána is to allow the wearing of the turban for members of the Sikh community and the hijab for members of the Muslim community. An Garda Síochána has identified such matters as a major barrier to some people considering becoming a Garda member.”

Mr Harris added: “We hope that this will encourage people from minority communities to join An Garda Síochána. We want to demonstrate to them that An Garda Síochána is an inclusive employer that is serious about becoming more diverse.”

Mooi hoor. :unhappy:

  • Leden van de groep vermoorden;
    Veroorzaken van ernstige lichamelijke of geestelijke schade aan leden van de groep;
    Het opzettelijk schade toebrengen aan de levensomstandigheden van de groep, bedoeld om de fysieke vernietiging ervan geheel of gedeeltelijk te bewerkstelligen;
    Maatregelen opleggen om geboorten binnen de groep te voorkomen;

Genocide komt in fasen.

‘House the Irish First’ – Demonstranten blokkeren woningbouw voor buitenlandse indringers

Islamic State suspect Lisa Smith makes last-minute bid to get charges dropped

A former Defence Forces member accused of being a member of Islamic State (IS) is to make a last gasp bid to have the charges against her dropped.

Lisa Smith (39) had been due to go on trial at the Special Criminal Court on Tuesday but the court will instead hear an application from her lawyers for the case to be dismissed.
They are expected to argue there is not sufficient evidence to put her on trial.

Her case received widespread attention when it emerged in March 2019 that Ms Smith, a former member of the Air Corps who served on the government jet, was detained in Syria over alleged links to IS.
She was returned to Ireland that December and subsequently charged with membership of an unlawful terrorist group, Islamic State (IS), between October 28, 2015 and December 1, 2019.

Ms Smith was also charged with financing terrorism by sending €800 in assistance, via a Western Union money transfer, to a named man on May 6, 2015.
She has denied the charges.

Ms Smith’s application to dismiss the charges is being made under a section of the Criminal Procedure Act 1967.
This allows a trial court to dismiss charges where it considers there is not a sufficient case to put the accused on trial.
The grounds for the application are set to be revealed in court on Tuesday.

Ms Smith joined the Defence Forces after leaving school in 2000 and also served with the Air Corps.
After converting to Islam she left Ireland in 2015.

A caliphate – a state governed in accordance with Islamic law, or Sharia – had been declared and IS seized large swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq.

Ms Smith’s barrister, Michael O’Higgins SC, has previously told the Special Criminal Court that she travelled around the Middle East and found herself in the area where the caliphate was declared.

The barrister said anyone voluntarily living there made them "automatically" a member of IS.

Should the application fail, the trial is likely to get underway later this week and is expected to last for 12 weeks.
The trial would involve evidence from a number of international witnesses.
Last November the court said it would allow evidence to be called from three witnesses by video-link as it was either "undesirable or not possible" for them to travel to Ireland. Two of the witnesses are in Australia while another is in the US.

STAB HORROR Six men arrested after four asylum seekers knifed in Kerry hotel as staff refuse to return to work over safety

FOUR men were left with stab injuries after clashes at a hotel housing asylum seekers.

Some staff are refusing to go back to work at Hotel Killarney, Co Kerry, over fears for their own safety.

Two men remain in custody in Killarney Garda Station following their arrest at the hotel during the disorder.

And gardai in Killarney have tonight made four further arrests as part of their investigation.

"There have been six arrests made so far as part of this investigation.

"The two other men arrested remain in Garda custody at this time."

Fears are growing that the tourist town cannot cope with an enormous influx of refugees.

A spokesperson said: “We don’t have the services to deal with such numbers. It’s putting enormous strain on the town.”

Four victims were taken to hospital in Cork and Tralee with stab wounds.

The two men in custody were arrested at the scene on New Year’s Day.

Hotelier and councillor Niall O’Callaghan called on the Government to step in.

He said: “We in Killarney have spent hard years building our reputation as a leading tourist destination and we are watching it being dismantled.”

And Cllr Donal Grady has called for those who committed the violence to be deported.

He said Killarney’s good name was “in the gutter” thanks to Government policy in placing so many in the hotel.

He added: “They’re here as asylum seekers fleeing war, yet causing disruption here.

“The people of Killarney are living in fear.”

The KASI drop in advice centre is also dealing with 3,000 Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Killarney since last March.

Some 16 different nationalities are concentrated in Hotel Killarney at this time.

A local male resident who asked not to be named said people in the Park Road area are “living in fear”, adding: “No one walks alone here after 10 pm at night.”

The Irish have no option left but to protest against an asylum crisis of their government’s own making

Mass protests against record levels of asylum seekers have rocked the historically immigrant-friendly nation, but the government is planning for more of the same this year

The Irish government has run out of designated accommodations to cater to asylum seekers. It has thus resorted to placing new arrivals in hotels — at considerable cost to Irish taxpayers — and tents as the country struggles to cope with demand.

Ireland experienced a record year for asylum applications in 2022, with the Department of Justice releasing a figure that was six times higher than the previous year. Immigration into the country hit a 15-year high.

With the government failing to implement the necessary infrastructure to handle such numbers, Irish nationals have taken to the streets to express their concern and anger at what they believe to be an unsustainable immigration rate. The massive influx of people is putting pressure on public services and social housing, in addition to creating social tensions caused by new arrivals unfamiliar with the Irish way of life.

The integration process has undoubtedly been hindered by the government’s failure to ensure the necessary measures were put in place before opening the country’s doors to newcomers, and those opposed to the record levels of asylum seekers across the world believe placing them in hotels in rural areas has serious security issues. They also argue that stretching social services to accommodate new arrivals when the supply of housing and social housing waiting lists are saturated is simply unfair.

Ireland is already facing a housing crisis
To put recent protests against the rate of newcomers into perspective, one need only look at the housing crisis enveloping the country. Housing in general across Ireland is at a premium, with a collapse in the number of rental properties available leading to sky-high rents in the properties remaining, particularly in Dublin.

According to Ronan Lyons, a Trinity College Dublin professor and housing expert, the Irish government will need to almost double its current commitment to build 28,000 new homes per year to within the range of 42,000-62,000 to accommodate the country’s rising population trajectory over the next 30 years.

The sub-issue of social housing is also raising alarm. The Irish Times reported in November last year how just 200 homes were being added per year to the stock of social housing across four councils in the Irish capital between 2017 and 2021, leaving thousands on waiting lists for social housing who have virtually no chance.

On top of that are official reports of an unprecedented 11,397 people in homeless shelters across the country in October last year. It then becomes clear why people have had enough and believe the country is full.

Similar to many other European nations whose governments have resorted to block-booking hotels to cater to the influx of newcomers, the upcoming tourism season represents a ticking time bomb. Hoteliers will either reject new government contracts to house asylum seekers or take advantage of the situation and extort those paying the bill — ultimately the Irish taxpayers.

Chief executive of the Irish Tourism Industry Council Eoghan O’Mara Walsh recently told RTÉ that 28 percent of all tourism beds in regional Ireland are currently occupied by Ukrainian refugees or asylum seekers. He urged the Irish government to quickly come up with a comprehensive plan to protect the tourism industry, upon which the Irish economy is heavily reliant.

How does the government plan to address the asylum chaos?
Is the government listening? It would appear not when considering the latest remarks from recently appointed Minister for Integration Joe O’Brien, who told the Irish Independent this month to expect similar numbers of new arrivals in the year ahead, despite Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman warning of the “very real risk” that newcomers will end up needing to sleep on the streets.

O’Gorman spoke of asylum reception centers being filled to the brim, adding that the government was prioritizing families with young children for suitable housing. The inevitable consequence of this, however, is Irish society being left with groups of angry adult men roaming the streets, a consequence Irish protesters are rightly concerned about.

Ireland Putting Migrants Before Homeless And Elderly People?
An announcement this week from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth advised “those who are considering seeking refuge in Ireland and who are currently in places of safety not to travel to Ireland at this time.” These appear to be hollow words from a government refusing to take the radical action necessary to prevent the crisis from deepening even further.

Many within the Irish establishment are attempting to dismiss the mass protests across the country opposing plans to keep Ireland’s doors open as events of far-right extremists. The populist Irish Freedom Party has accused the country’s “political and media class” of “engaging in a campaign of demonizing ordinary people.” However, the reality is that many across both sides of the debate agree the asylum system is broken and isn’t going to be fixed by adopting a same-again approach this year.

Earlier this month, the head of the UN agency for refugees (UNHCR) in Ireland, Enda O’Neill, admitted that the asylum system in the country is “unraveling rapidly,” and warned that “urgent intervention at the most senior levels of government is needed if we are to turn this around.”

The asylum crisis is one of the liberal Irish government’s own making, and it is clear that a radical change in approach is required to stem the flow. However, if recent murmurs from within the government, which indicate a reluctance to change tack, are accurate, the fault for the breaking point in the housing market being breached, the flames of social tensions being further stoked, and the highly probably rise in anti-immigrant sentiment will be firmly placed at the government’s door.

Ook Ierland is vol

Ierse woede tegen massamigratie krijgt politieke vorm
