Honderden arrestaties in Bangladesh na geweld tegen hindoes

De politie in Bangladesh zegt 450 mensen te hebben opgepakt in verband met aanvallen op leden van de hindoeminderheid. Bij die aanvallen zijn volgens lokale media zeker zes doden gevallen.

De aanleiding voor het geweld was een foto vorige week op internet van een beeld van een hindoegod met een koran op zijn knie. Moslims zagen dat als godslastering.

Honderden moslims in het zuiden van Bangladesh vielen een hindoetempel aan, waarbij drie doden vielen. In het noorden van Bangladesh staken honderden moslims een hindoetempel en zeker twintig huizen van hindoes in brand. De politie maakte met traangas en geweerschoten een eind aan de ongeregeldheden.

De VN-vertegenwoordiger in Bangladesh zegt dat de onlusten van de afgelopen dagen door haatzaaiers op sociale media zijn aangewakkerd. Mensenrechtenorganisatie Amnesty International eist een onderzoek en wil dat de geweldplegers worden gestraft.

Bangladesh is een overwegend islamitisch land. Tien procent van de bevolking is hindoe. In het verleden kwam het vaker tot geweldsuitbarstingen tussen beide bevolkingsgroepen

This ploy has worked in the recent past.

A 25-year-old youth was held in Chowdhury Bazar area of Habiganj town on Friday while entering the Sarbajanin Puja pavilion with a Quran.

Locals apprehended him as he had been loitering in the area since soon and attempted to enter the establishment through the back door in the afternoon.

A Quran was recovered from his bag at that time. Later, he was handed over to the police.

The detainee is Mizan, son of late Shamsuzzaman from Luiatpur village in Begumganj of Noakhali….

The matter created tension among the locals since a series of attacks was launched on the temples, houses and shops of the Hindus across the country including Noakhali during the Durga Puja in October.

The attacks were launched after a false claim of the desecration of the Quran by the Hindus at a Puja venue in Comilla spread like wildfire.

Later, police arrested one Iqbal Hossain of the town for placing the Quran at the Puja venue to spoil religious harmony.

Bangladesh: Women-only beach scrapped after social media outcry

Authorities in Bangladesh have reversed their decision to open a women-only beach after facing accusations they were pandering to hardline Islamists.
On Thursday officials had opened a 150m (492ft) section of Cox's Bazar for women and children, but hours later announced they were scrapping the idea.
The decision to segregate the beach was made following requests from some women, officials had said.

Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country and remains largely conservative.

"(The women) requested a dedicated beach section for themselves, because they felt shy and insecure in a crowded place," Abu Sufian, a senior official in Cox's Bazar, told AFP.
The move to section off the beach also came after news of a gang rape of a woman in Cox's Bazar last week shocked the country, sparking an outcry over women's safety in the area.
But the decision triggered an uproar on social media. Critics accused the government of acquiescing to hardline Islamists, who have recently held massive rallies demanding gender segregation in workplaces and factories.

One commentator described the beach segregation as "Talibistan," referring to the Taliban Islamist group which has in recent months curbed women's rights in Afghanistan.

Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh is the world's longest natural sea beach, and a popular tourist destination in the country.
Hundreds of thousands visit the area during festive periods, and the tourism sector has boomed in recent years.

Tientallen doden door grote brand en explosies bij deels Nederlands containerdepot Bangladesh

De brandweer vermoedt dat de brand is ontstaan in een container met waterstofperoxide, een oxiderend middel dat sterk op brandbare stoffen reageert. Het vuur sloeg daarna snel over naar omliggende containers.

Een grote brand en daaropvolgende explosies bij een deels Nederlands containerdepot in Bangladesh hebben het leven gekost aan tientallen mensen. Dat melden internationale persbureaus zondag. Op het moment van schrijven ligt het dodental op zeker 38, onder wie vijf brandweerlieden. Van de ruim 150 gewonden verkeert een deel in kritieke toestand. Het ongeluk gebeurde bij het Nederlands-Bengaalse bedrijf BM Inland Container Depot in havenstand Chittagong.

Hoewel nog niet zeker, vermoedt de brandweer dat de brand is ontstaan in een container met waterstofperoxide, een oxiderend middel dat sterk op brandbare stoffen reageert. Het vuur sloeg daarna snel over naar omliggende containers. De ontploffingen die hierop volgden — sommige containers bevatten andere chemicaliën — waren zo hevig dat ze op vier kilometer afstand voelbaar waren. Bij omliggende gebouwen sprongen de ramen, meldt Reuters. De brand was zondagmorgen nog steeds niet onder controle.

Bangladesh kent een sterk groeiende economie, maar heeft op het gebied van industriële veiligheid nog veel te winnen. Vorig jaar verloren zeker 52 mensen het leven bij een brand in een fabriek in het ruim 164 miljoen inwoners tellende Zuid-Aziatische land. Ook daarbij vatten onder meer brandbare chemische stoffen vlam. Hoewel de arbeidsomstandigheden in de internationaal belangrijke kledingindustrie zijn verbeterd, waarschuwen experts al langer voor ongelukken in andere sectoren.

Inwoners van Dhaka moesten er even op wachten, maar nu kunnen ze met de metro reizen. De hoofdstad van Bangladesh, met meer dan 20 miljoen inwoners, staat bekend om zijn verkeersopstoppingen. Of zoals een lokaal gezegde luidt: wie niet in Dhaka is geweest, weet niet wat een file is.

Na zes jaar bouwen, met steun van Japan, heeft de stad nu een metrolijn van 12 kilometer. Dat de metro rijdt, is ‘een kwestie van trots’, zei premier Sheikh Hasina woensdag bij de opening. Iedere trein krijgt een wagon die voor vrouwen is gereserveerd.

Mostafizur Rahman, die drie uur met de bus onderweg was naar zijn werk, is er blij mee, zegt hij tegen persbureau AFP. Hij rekent erop dat de metro ‘het publieke lijden zal verminderen’. Rahman geniet tijdens de rit van het uitzicht op Dhaka; het metrospoor ligt op palen. Een ondergrondse lijn was te riskant in de laaggelegen stad, die regelmatig last heeft van overstromingen.

De tot Rohingya gemaakten zijn niet welkom bij hun geloofsbroeders in Bangladesh.
Ze proberen dus hun heil elders te zoeken en zakken in bootjes langs de kust naar het Zuiden.
Terug naar Burma zit er niet in. De volgende halte zou Thailand kunnen zijn maar daar komen ze niet in. En als ze landen worden ze weer op hun bootje weggesleept.
Dan komen ze bij Maleisië. Ook veel gekoofsbroeders maar net zoals in Thailand: oprotten.
En dan arriveren ze bij de Noordkust van Sumatra. Dan komen ze on Atjeh terecht, het meest Mohammedaanse deel van Indonesië. (zie: Atjeh oorlogen). Daar zullen ze dan wel met open armen ontvangen worden? Nee.

Kick them out: Indonesian protesters storm convention center housing Rohingya refugees in Banda Aceh, demand their deportation

The campaign against the Rohingya refugees in Indonesia intensified on 27th December when a large number of protesters charged a temporary refugee facility in the Aceh state and pressed for their deportation. A video showed the students, many of whom were sporting the insignias of various universities, running into the building’s basement where large numbers of refugees from the Rohingya ethnic group were present.

The demonstrators were shouting slogans such as “kick them out” and “reject Rohingya in Aceh.” After being driven out of there, 137 refugees were loaded onto two trucks and transported to a new location.

The incident was denounced by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHRC) which stated, “Deeply disturbed to see a mob attack on a site sheltering vulnerable refugee families.”

“Hundreds of youngsters stormed a building basement on Wednesday where refugees were sheltered. The mob broke a police cordon and forcibly put 137 refugees on two trucks, and moved them to another location in Banda Aceh. The incident has left refugees shocked and traumatized,” alleged the refugee agency.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo of Indonesia has attributed the current increase in immigration to human trafficking. He confirmed that the interests of the local population would take precedence over those of the refugees and that the government would offer them temporary humanitarian support.

The people of Aceh became irate when hundreds of Rohingya started to arrive on the province’s coast in boats starting mid-November. They first rejected a vessel and then demanded that the migrants be turned back. Some villagers mentioned they had bad encounters with the Rohingya who had arrived earlier and were “troublesome” while others disclosed that supplies were already scarce for the locals.

Subsequently, little demonstrations arose to internet campaigns against the Rohingya in which Indonesians advocated their deportation and accused the refugees of being colonizers, according to recent statements from officials.

Bangladesh: Mob led by Sohail attacks Hindu man for keeping his shop open during Ramazan, victim injured with sharp weapon

From the start of Ramzan, Rajiv Kumar Dey was asked to pay chada (money) by Sohail Hassan and his men but he refused to give in to their demands.

On Friday (15th March), Islamists attacked a Hindu man named Rajiv Kumar Dey for keeping his shop open during the daytime in the month of Ramzan. The incident took place in Sylhet city of Bangladesh.

As per reports, the accused was identified as Sohail Hassan. He is said to be a member of the Chhatra League (the student wing of the Sheikh Hasina-led-Awami League government).

The victim ran a small shop near the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH). Rajiv Kumar Dey was asked to pay chada (money) by Sohail Hassan and his accomplice from the start of Ramzan but he refused to give in to their demands.

The victim continued to run his business but put up a curtain outside his shop for the sake of Roja (fasting observed by Muslims during Ramzan). He said that he wanted to cater to the Hindu patients who visited the nearby hospital during the daytime.

In the evenings, Rajiv Kumar Dey would also sell iftari (food consumed during iftar) to his Muslim customers. On Friday (15th March) afternoon, Sohail Hassan and his accomplice went to the victim’s shop and accused him of hurting religious sentiments during Ramzan.

They also told him that a Hindu man could not sell iftari to Muslims. The Islamists then attacked Rajiv Kumar Dey with a sharp weapon and vandalised his shop.

The victim was later admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The brutal attack resulted in 18 stitches on his head. During the unprovoked attack, Sohail and his men also looted the cashbox.

“They broke my cashbox and took money,” the victim lamented. His employee at the shop was also hurt during the attack. On learning about the matter, a police team lead by Officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Moinuddin reached the crime scene. A police case has not been registered so far in connection to the case.

This is however not the first time that a member of the Chhatra League has resorted to persecution of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. In January this year, it came to light that the convenor of the Chhatra League at the Kachua Government Bangabandhu Degree College, Ibrahim Miya, usurped the land of a Hindu family in the Basabaria village of Bangladesh.
