Imran Khan to be released from custody in Pakistan, court rules


Pakistan's ex-prime minister Imran Khan is to be freed from custody, a day after the Supreme Court ruled his dramatic arrest on corruption charges was illegal.

Judges granted Mr Khan protected bail, meaning he can not be re-arrested on those charges for two weeks.
The court also ordered he could not be arrested on any charges filed after last Tuesday until 17 May.
Despite the rulings, the corruption charges against Mr Khan still stand.

The 70-year-old - who was arrested on Tuesday as he arrived at a courthouse in Islamabad - pleaded not guilty to the charges when a judge formally indicted him with corruption for the first time in the dozens of cases he faces.

Officials say Mr Khan unlawfully sold state gifts during his premiership, in a case brought by Pakistan's Election Commission.

He remained at court after the hearing on Friday seeking preventive bail against other charges, which he told the BBC included counts of terrorism, sedition and blasphemy.

Conviction would disqualify the former international cricket star - and Pakistan's prime minister from 2018 to 2022 - from standing for office, possibly for life. Elections are due later this year.

Mr Khan had arrived at the hearing under heavy armed guard, and greeted supporters with a single raised fist.

Speaking during Friday's hearing, Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said the arrest was unlawful because it took place on court premises.
He ordered that the "whole process" of Mr Khan's arrest "needs to be backtracked".

The dramatic saga has significantly escalated tensions between Mr Khan and Pakistan's powerful military.

Many analysts believe Mr Khan's election win in 2018 happened with the help of the military, which both parties denied.

But he later fell out with the army. After a series of defections, and amid mounting economic crises, he lost his majority in parliament.

Since being ousted less than four years into his term, he has become one of the military's most vocal critics, and analysts say the army's popularity has fallen.

And his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party says the charges against him - which relate to gifts given to him by foreign leaders while he served as prime minster - are politically motivated.

His dramatic arrest outside the courthouse on Tuesday sparked outrage among Mr Khan's supporters.

At least 10 people were killed and some 2,000 arrested as unrest swept the country. Those protests included an attack at a military commander's home residence in Lahore, which was set on fire.

While this week's violence petered out after the army was deployed in Islamabad and other areas, such as Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the country remains on edge.

There was a large security presence at the court on Friday.

Speaking to the BBC before his bail hearing, Mr Khan said he feared immediate re-arrest once released, and urged authorities against a move as "there might be huge reaction which will go out of control. Because mobs are out of control, no-one controls mobs."
"How am I supposed to control what happens afterwards?" he told the BBC.

Critics say the PTI has been fuelling unrest through social media posts calling for protesters to take to the streets, and judges told Mr Khan that he must condemn the violence and tell supporters to stop.

Mr Khan told the BBC he and his party had only called for peaceful protest and asked for supporters to "act within the constitution".
"We have never broken the law. Even now, when I tell them to protest I say 'They should be peaceful protests'," he said inside the courtroom on Friday.

Pakistan's current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who took power after Khan was ousted, criticised the Supreme Court's ruling to free Khan in a cabinet speech aired on state television.
He alleged that judges had favoured Imran Khan, and their ruling had caused "the death of justice in Pakistan".
He further criticised Mr Khan and his party for their inflammatory language, and encouraging protesters to take to the streets.
"Imran Khan has divided the nation," he said.

Op 6 mei luidde de doodsklok voor de imam Maulana Nigar Alam. Zoals dat muziekinstrument wel vaker doet in Pakistan: totaal onverwacht. Veertig jaar oud was de man Gods en gezond. Gepassioneerd voerde hij het woord op een massabijeenkomst ter ondersteuning van oppositieleider en oud-premier Imran Khan.

Hij speelde een thuiswedstrijd. Dacht hij althans. Zijn gehoor bestond uit politieke vrienden. Maar juist die brachten hem om het leven. In zijn toespraak overlaadde hij zijn idool Imran Khan, behalve politicus ook een vermaard ex-cricketspeler, een soort Cruijff die de politiek in ging, met lof.

Mohammed als tweede, jaloerse god

Er was niets aan de hand. Totdat hij in het vuur van zijn betoog uit de bocht vloog. “Imran Khan is een betrouwbaar persoon en ik respecteer hem evenzeer als de profeet!” riep hij. En toen volgde de lynchpartij, wegens blasfemie. Want religie-dwazen in het met blasfemie-hysterie besmette Pakistan vereren Mohammed als een tweede, jaloerse god naast Allah, die wraak eist wanneer iemand een mens met hemzelf vergelijkt.

De politie sleepte de geestelijke een winkel in. Maar de aanvallers forceerden de deur waarna ze de man met stokken dood mepten. Wat opvalt bij dit soort lynchpartijen, dit jaar waren het er in Pakistan in elk geval al drie, is de uitschakeling van de factor tijd. De term snelrecht is veel te zwak. Aanklacht, veroordeling en terechtstelling voltrekken zich in een onnavolgbaar tempo en misschien wel in omgekeerde volgorde.

Geen vertrouwen in de overheid

Dat de beulen hun ‘vonnis’ onverwijld uitvoeren is vanuit hun ‘standpunt’ bekeken begrijpelijk. Want het vertrouwen in hun overheid zijn ze kwijt. Immers, Pakistan heeft, dat wel, een strenge wet tegen godslastering. Niks mis mee. Maar de ‘lamlendige’ toepassing ervan ergert het vrome volk.

Goed, lagere rechters leggen doorgaans gedwee de doodstraf op. Maar dat doen ze om zelf aan lynching te ontkomen. En ook wel om de verdachte te redden. Want na vrijspraak kan zomaar een meute toeslaan, soms al in het gerechtsgebouw en anders wel daarbuiten. Haar dollemansjustitie kent maar één straf: de dood en wel hier en nu en onmiddellijk.

Patstelling

Na het vonnis van de rechtbank volgt een verblijf voor onbepaalde tijd in een dodencel, die effectief beschermt tegen lynching. Er ontstaat een patstelling. De overheid durft een executie niet aan, vanwege buitenlandse kritiek. Vrijlating is onverkoopbaar aan de publieke opinie. De christelijke boerenvrouw Asia Bibi verbleef negen jaren in een dodencel, tot 2018. In de westerse wereld werd ze een icoon. Na haar vrijlating en emigratie naar Canada verslapte de aandacht voor de Pakistaanse blasfemie-gekte.

Die maakt relatief vaak slachtoffers onder religieuze minderheden: hindoes, ahmadi-moslims, sjiieten en christenen. Nigar Alam behoorde tot geen van die groepen. Zelfs voor soennitische mannen Gods als hij kan een ‘onvertogen woord’ dus noodlottig zijn.

Vorige week waren de christenen weer aan de beurt. In Lahore pakte de politie twee tieners op. Een agent meende uit hun monden de namen Mohammed en Ali te hebben beluisterd. Godslastering volgens de diender. Nee, ze hadden het over een pastamerk, zegt de familie. De woonwijk van het tweetal telt tientallen christelijke families. Veel ervan hebben elders een veilig heenkomen gezocht.

Deadly bomb blast at political rally in northwest Pakistan

The blast in the country’s Bajur district killed at least 35 people and wounded 100, according to police.

A powerful bomb ripped through a rally by supporters of a hardline political and Muslim leader in the country’s northwestern Bajur district that borders Afghanistan on Sunday, killing at least 35 people, local officials said.

Azam Khan, head of the emergency room at Khar’s main hospital, said 35 bodies were brought to the hospital while the number of wounded was now more than 100.

Government administrator Mohibullah Khan Yousufzai confirmed the toll, adding that those serious wounded were being airlifted to the provincial capital, Peshawar, for better medical care.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Senior police officer Nazir Khan said the workers’ convention of Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party was taking place on the outskirts of Khar, the capital of Bajur district, when the explosion took place.

Akhtar Hayat Gandapur, the inspector general of police for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said explosion took place before the senior party leader’s arrival.

Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said that while the attack was confirmed as a suicide bombing, there were fears that the armed group Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) may be responsible for it.
“The Tehrik-e Taliban have declared against the security forces and against the government and Maulana Fazlur Rehman is an ally of the government,” Hyder said.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam is part of the Pakistan Democratic Alliance, a political coalition affiliated with the government in which Rehman plays a leading role.

Meetings are being organised across the country to mobilise supporters for the coming elections, due to be held by October.

Populaire Pakistaanse oud-premier Imran Khan veroordeeld tot drie jaar cel

Een rechtbank in de Pakistaanse hoofdstad Islamabad heeft de voormalige Pakistaanse premier Imran Khan tot drie jaar celstraf veroordeeld voor corruptie. Mogelijk mag de populaire politicus, die alle beschuldigingen ontkent, nu niet deelnemen aan de komende verkiezingen.

De rechter oordeelde dat Imran Khan zijn plicht niet is nagekomen om het geld dat hij verdiende met de verkoop van staatsgeschenken aan te geven. Het gaat om dure diplomatieke geschenken van buitenlandse partners, denk aan Rolex-horloges en parfums, die hij tussen 2018 en 2022 als premier kreeg. Deze kon hij gratis of tegen een vriendenprijsje overnemen om ze vervolgens door te verkopen.

Kort na de uitspraak op zaterdag arresteerde de politie de voormalig premier, die vorig jaar door het parlement werd weggestuurd vanwege economisch wanbeleid, in zijn huis in de oostelijke stad Lahore. Dat zegt Khans advocaat Intazar Hussain tegen persbureau Reuters. Zijn politieke partij, Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), reageert in een verklaring dat het al een verzoek tot hoger beroep heeft ingediend bij het Hooggerechtshof.

Khan zegt dat hij zich wel aan de regels heeft gehouden en de cadeaus op legale wijze heeft verkocht. De 70-jarige politicus wijst er bovendien op dat hij precies hetzelfde deed als veel andere Pakistaanse vertegenwoordigers, maar alleen hij daarvoor wordt vervolgd. De openbaar gemaakte schatlijsten tonen inderdaad dat andere premiers, presidenten en ministers net zo goed staatsgeschenken in eigen zak hebben gestoken.

Verkiezingen in november

Volgens Khan wil de zittende premier Shehbaz Sharif een stokje steken voor zijn politieke comeback, die gezien zijn aanhoudende populariteit slechts een kwestie van tijd lijkt. Een veroordeling betekent dat Imran Khan voor de duur van een parlementaire termijn geen openbaar ambt mag bekleden. Dan mag Khan zich dus niet kandidaat stellen bij de verkiezingen in november, wanneer hij het tegen zijn grote rivaal wil opnemen.

In een vooraf opgenomen verklaring op X, voorheen bekend als Twitter, richt Khan tot zijn achterban: ‘Ik heb maar één oproep, blijf niet stil thuis zitten.’ Tegen de populaire oppositiepoliticus lopen tientallen rechtszaken, die in Pakistan heel wat stof doen opwaaien. Aanhangers van de 70-jarige Khan wisten meermaals zijn arrestatie te voorkomen door zijn huis met hand en tand tegen de politie te verdedigen.

In mei dit jaar pakten paramilitairen Khan toch op tijdens een zitting in de rechtbank. Daarop braken gewelddadige demonstraties uit, waarbij zeker tien doden vielen en duizenden mensen werden gearresteerd.

Khan, de voormalige aanvoerder van het nationale cricketteam, won de verkiezingen van 2018 vrij uit het niets. Zijn sportverleden en zijn strijd tegen corruptie maakten hem enorm populair. Toch stemde het parlement hem in het voorjaar van 2022 weg middels een motie van wantrouwen als verantwoordelijke voor de torenhoge inflatie en grote buitenlandse schulden van Pakistan. Het land is zwaar getroffen door de nasleep van de pandemie en de economische gevolgen van de oorlog in Oekraïne.

30 killed, 80 injured in train accident in Pakistan

At least 30 people were killed and 80 others injured on Sunday when several compartments of an express train derailed in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province, in the latest rail disaster to hit the country.

The Hazara Express train travelling from Karachi to Rawalpindi derailed in Nawabshah district near the Sarhari Railway Station, 275 kilometres from the provincial capital Karachi.

Railways Minister Saad Rafiq told the media that 30 people died and 80 others were injured in the accident. The minister said the top priority for Railway authorities was to complete the rescue and clearance operations. He said an inquiry would be conducted to find out the cause of the accident.

Commissioner Benazirabad division Abbas Baloch also said that 30 people died in the accident while some passengers are still trapped in a bogie.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who spoke to the media at People’s Medical College Hospital in Benazirabad – the district home to Nawabshah, confirmed the death toll.
He added that the injured could be shifted to Karachi if needed and directed the local administration and health officials to expedite relief and rescue efforts.
He said around 1,000 passengers were travelling in the Hazara Express.

The driver of the Hazara Express told Geo News that the speed of the train was around 50 kilometres per hour when 10 out of 19 compartments went off the track one after the another.
“The maximum speed limit on the line is 105 KM per hour so we were well within the speed limit. I have no idea what happened,” he said.

Pakistan Railways Sukkur Divisional Commercial Officer (DCO) Mohsin Siyal said 15 bodies were retrieved from the wreckage and the rescue work aided by the Pakistan Army was continuing.

Television channels showed the crash site with train compartments badly damaged near the station. They showed rescue workers and police trying to pull out people from the derailed compartments along with civilians who also joined the rescue work.
“Right now, the focus is on rescue work and recovering people from the derailed compartments,” an official said.
He said that the cause of the accident is being investigated.

The state-run Radio Pakistan reported that the Pakistan Army and Rangers were involved in relief and rescue activities at the accident site.
The rescue operation has been started on the special directives of Army chief General Asim Munir, it added. Additional troops have been called in to assist the rescue operation. The Army Aviation helicopters are also reaching the spot to rescue the injured people.
“The rescue operation of Pakistan Army will continue till the transfer of the last injured to the hospital and the rehabilitation of the people trapped at the accident site,” it said.

A spokesperson of the Pakistan Railways in Karachi earlier said at least eight bogies derailed and the intensity of the accident increased due to delayed application of brakes. The official said the affected bogies would be lifted off the track in a few hours using heavy machines and added that trains departing from Karachi might face delays.

Railways Minister Rafiq said the train, carrying over 1,000 passengers, was travelling at a reasonable speed, which initial investigations showed, He said an emergency has been imposed in hospitals in Sukkur and Nawabshah.

Shaheed Benzirabad Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Muhammad Younis Chandio termed the incident a “big accident”. However, the official refrained from confirming the number of casualties.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, whose Pakistan Peoples’ Party is in power in the province, directed the Sindh government to provide immediate treatment to the passengers injured in the train accident and also called on PPP workers to participate in relief and rescue activities.

Railways accidents occur frequently in Pakistan due to outdated track maintenance systems, signal issues, technical equipment and old engines. Pakistan’s Railway system covers around 7,500 kilometres.
Sindh has seen the worst railway accidents with the worst train disaster taking place in 1990 near Sukkur when 307 people were killed.
Sunday’s accident came just a day after three coaches of Allama Iqbal Express – travelling from Karachi to Sialkot – derailed, but no one suffered injuries.
In April, seven people were killed when a fire broke out in a bogie of the Karachi Express travelling from Karachi to Lahore near Tando Masti Khan in the Khairpur district of the southern Sindh province.
On June 7, 2021, 32 people were killed and 64 injured after two express trains collided in Sindh’s Ghotki.

US Site Publishes 'Diplomatic Cable' at Heart of Imran Khan’s 'Foreign Conspiracy' Claim

The encrypted message, published by The Intercept, allegedly quotes a senior US diplomat suggesting that Pakistan’s relations with US and Europe would improve if the former cricketer was not at the helm.

New Delhi: More than a year after Imran Khan brandished a document at a public rally, claiming it was a diplomatic cable that substantiated US effort to dethrone him from the position of Prime Minister of Pakistan, a news website based in the United States released the purported classified document on Wednesday, August 9.

The encrypted message, published by The Intercept, allegedly quotes a senior US diplomat suggesting that Pakistan’s relations with US and Europe would improve if the former cricketer was not at the helm.

I asked Don if the reason for a strong U.S. reaction was Pakistan’s abstention in the voting in the UNGA. He categorically replied in the negative and said that it was due to the Prime Minister’s visit to Moscow. He said that “I think if the no-confidence vote against the Prime Minister succeeds, all will be forgiven in Washington because the Russia visit is being looked at as a decision by the Prime Minister. Otherwise, I think it will be tough going ahead.” He paused and then said “I cannot tell how this will be seen by Europe but I suspect their reaction will be similar.” He then said that “honestly I think isolation of the Prime Minister will become very strong from Europe and the United States.” Don further commented that it seemed that the Prime Minister’s visit to Moscow was planned during the Beijing Olympics and there was an attempt by the Prime Minister to meet Putin which was not successful and then this idea was hatched that he would go to Moscow.

In April 2022, Khan was ousted as prime minister after a parliamentary vote of no confidence by the joint opposition alliance. He is currently jailed after being sentenced for corruption allegations. After the conviction, the Election Commission disqualified him from running for office for five years.

A month earlier, senior State Department official Donald Lu attended a lunch for outgoing Pakistani ambassador Asad Majeed Khan at the latter’s residence in Washington. The alleged diplomatic cable at the centre of the political controversy was based on the discussions at the lunch sent by the Pakistani diplomat to headquarters in Islamabad.

At the start of the discussions, as per the note published by The Intercept, Lu conveyed that there was a lot of unhappiness over Pakistan’s policy on Ukraine. Russia had begun the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, just as Imran Khan was enroute Moscow on a state visit. Thereafter, Pakistan had also abstained on various UN resolutions that criticised Russia on the Ukraine war.

The note stated that Lu said that it was “quite clear that this is the Prime Minister’s policy”, indicating that the military establishment was not on the same page.

Lu added that the view was that this policy over Russia was “tied to the current political dramas in Islamabad that he (Prime Minister) needs and is trying to show a public face”. The Pakistani ambassador apparently responded that this wasn’t a correct reading of the developments.

The following key excerpt from the diplomatic cable is where Lu refers to the disenchantment over Khan. He conveyed, as per the version transcribed by the Pakistani diplomat, that if Khan lost the no-confidence vote, it will be easier for US and its western allies to quickly mend frayed diplomatic ties with Pakistan,

In another part of the published cable, the Pakistani diplomat accused the US of being tougher on Pakistan while going easy on India – which had also taken a neutral position on the Ukraine war.

Don was evasive and responded that Washington looked at the U.S.-India relationship very much through the lens of what was happening in China. He added that while India had a close relationship with Moscow, “I think we will actually see a change in India’s policy once all Indian students are out of Ukraine.”

The article also said that the document was “provided to The Intercept by an anonymous source in the Pakistani military who said that they had no ties to Imran Khan or Khan’s party”.

According to Dawn, despite this disclaimer by The Intercept about the source, “many believe that the source of the leak could be the PTI itself”.

The newspaper said that timing of the alleged cable’s publication “seems quite significant, as it comes in the wake of the imprisonment of Imran Khan over charges of graft in the Toshakhana case”. It noted that as per protocol, only a limited number of senior officials had access to the confidential cable, which included the prime minister, foreign minister and army chief.

‘Massive crime’ says Shehbaz Sharif

In an interview with WE News today, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was asked about The Intecept‘s story.

While the Pakistan government’s tenure ended at Wednesday midnight, he said that during two meetings of the National Security Committee on the cypher were held under his leadership. “In one of the meetings, former ambassador and foreign secretary Asad Majeed clearly stated that there was no discussion of a conspiracy in his meeting with Donald Lu,” he said.

He added that if the contents of the cypher are true and they were published in an international media outlet, “then it is a massive crime”.

Rana Sanaullah Khan, interior minister in Sharif cabinet, tweeted that there had to be an investigation to establish the authenticity of the document. “Potentially, it is a very sinister, treacherous, and seditious act,” he said.

Indicating that the article could be the basis of further action, the interior minister noted that Khan had stated that he had a “copy of the cypher, which he has not returned and has accepted (on record) that he misplaced or lost it”.

“If proven guilty, Khan should be tried under the Official Secret Act,” he tweeted.

At a media briefing on Wednesday in Washington, the US State department spokesperson Mathew Miller confirmed that the US had expressed its concern both privately and publicly about Imran Khan’s visit to Moscow.

“We express concern privately to the Government of Pakistan, as we express concern publicly, about the visit of then Prime Minister Khan to Moscow on the very day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We made that concern quite clear,” he said in response to a media query.

While refusing to authenticate the document, Miller added that the comments in the published note “were accurate as reported, they in no way show the United States taking a position on who the leader of Pakistan ought to be”.

“The allegations that the United States has interfered in internal decisions about the leadership of Pakistan are false, as we have stated they were false. They were always false and they remain false,” he stated.

When pointed out that the remarks could be construed as regime change due to the US’s history of ousting leaders in other countries, Miller noted, “I will say that I can understand how those comments, number one, could be taken out of context; and number two, how people might have the desire for them to be taken out of context, and might try to use them to advance an agenda that is not represented by the comments themselves.”

In the run-up to the no-confidence vote, Khan had first mentioned the “foreign plot” when he wave a document and claimed that it was “credible proof” of a conspiracy to remove him from office. On March 31, his government issued a demarche to the US embassy to make a formal protest that the United States had backed the opposition on the no-confidence vote.

The US state department had then said that there “no truth” to the allegations made by Khan.

Four days later, in a televised address to his party lawmakers, Khan named US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu as having reportedly warn in a meeting with Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Asad Majeed that there could be implications if he survived the opposition’s no-confidence motion in the National Assembly.

Incidentally, Khan had this February gone back on his earlier allegations targeting the United States and accused former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa for being responsible for his ouster.

“Whatever happened, now as things unfold, it wasn’t the US who told Pakistan [to oust me]. It was unfortunately, from what evidence has come up, [former army chief] Gen [Qamar Javed] Bajwa who somehow managed to tell the Americans that I was anti-American. And so, it [the plan to oust me] wasn’t imported from there. It was exported from here to there,” he told Voice of America in an interview.

Last month, the cipher controversy again came back to top headlines of the Pakistani media after alleged “confession” of Imran Khan’s former principal secretary surfaced. In the ‘confession’, allegedly recorded before a magistrate, Azam Khan who went ‘missing’ earlier, accused the former prime minister of using the diplomatic cable to gain political mileage and build an “anti-establishment narrative”.

As per the statement reported by Dawn on July 20, Khan was allegedly “euphoric” after reading the cipher. Azam Khan also said that a copy of the cipher was “retained by Imran Khan and the next day (March 10) when he asked for it, Imran Khan replied that he has misplaced it.” The statement claimed that the PTI chief did not return the original cipher, despite repeated requests. Imran Khan had subsequently responded that the cipher copy had not been misplaced and remained in the custody of the foreign office.

Hours after the ‘confession’ being published in the media, Rana Sanaullah held a press conference to claim that the statement was credible. Thereafter, the Federal Investigation Agency issued a notice to Imran Khan, asking him to appear before the bureau in Islamabad

The interior minister had then claimed that the cipher case was “similar to the proceedings initiated against former US President Donald Trump for mishandling classified documents”.

A day later, Imran Khan said that the cipher controversy had been dug up again to disqualify him from contesting elections and alleged that his former aide was forced to make the statement.

He claimed that the US was actually addressing the former army chief through the cipher as the latter had the power to remove his government. “My own army chief was lobbying against me and acting to topple his government that had revived the country’s economy and industry after hectic efforts,” the PTI chairman alleged on July 21.

Pakistan: Mob burns churches over blasphemy claims

Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan have set fire to churches and vandalised homes belonging to Christians over claims that two men had desecrated the Quran, police say.

The attacks took place in Jaranwala in the province of eastern Punjab.

Police said at least four churches had been set on fire, while residents said up to a dozen buildings connected to churches had been damaged.

Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan.

No-one has ever been executed for it, but dozens have previously been killed by mobs after being accused of the crime.

Police making the case against the two Christian men claim that they found pages of the Quran with derogatory remarks written in red, Reuters reported.

Yassir Bhatti, a 31-year-old Christian, was one of those to flee their homes.
"They broke the windows, doors and took out fridges, sofas, chairs and other household items to pile them up in front of the Church to be burnt," he told the AFP news agency.
"They also burnt and desecrated Bibles, they were ruthless."

Videos uploaded to social media show protesters destroying Christian buildings while police appear to watch on.

Amir Mir, the information minister for Punjab province, condemned the alleged blasphemy and said in a statement that thousands of police have been sent to the area and dozens of people have been detained.

The mob was mostly made up of people from an Islamist political party called Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), a government source told Reuters. The TLP has denied any involvement.

Caretaker PM Anwar ul Haq Kakar called for swift action against those responsible for the violence.

Pakistani bishop Azad Marshall, in the neighbouring city of Lahore, said the Christian community was "deeply pained and distressed" by the events.

"We cry out for justice and action from law enforcement and those who dispense justice, and the safety of all citizens to intervene immediately and assure us that our lives are valuable in our own homeland," he posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Pakistaans Hooggerechtshof draait corruptie-veroordeling van oud-premier Imran Khan terug, vrijlating onzeker

Pakistan Imran Khan werd begin augustus veroordeeld tot drie jaar gevangenisstraf in een corruptiezaak over het frauduleus registreren en doorverkopen van buitenlandse cadeaus.


Het Hooggerechtshof van Islamabad heeft dinsdag de recente veroordeling van de voormalige Pakistaanse premier Imran Khan wegens corruptie teruggedraaid. Dat meldt zijn advocaat Naeem Panjutha op platform X, voorheen Twitter. Hoewel het Hooggerechtshof van Islamabad Khan borgtocht verleende, is niet duidelijk of dit besluit tot zijn vrijlating uit de gevangenis leidt. Hem hangen immers nog verscheidene andere aanklachten — van fraude tot terrorisme — boven het hoofd. Een gedetailleerde motivering van het Hooggerechtshof volgt later.

Begin augustus werd Khan veroordeeld tot drie jaar gevangenisstraf in een corruptiezaak over het frauduleus registreren en doorverkopen van buitenlandse cadeaus — aanklachten waartegen Khan beroep aantekende. Door de veroordeling werd de populaire politicus voor vijf jaar uitgesloten van verkiezingsdeelname. Of ook dat wordt teruggedraaid is vanwege de andere aanklachten hoogst onzeker, aangezien elke veroordeling kan leiden tot politieke uitsluiting.

Het is de tweede keer deze week dat een gerechtelijk besluit in het voordeel van Khan uitvalt. Maandag werden ook al tenlasteleggingen vanwege opruiing ongedaan gemaakt.

Nieuwe arrestatie?

Khan heeft schuld in de giften-zaak altijd ontkend en sprak eerder bij monde van zijn advocaat over „een politieke afrekening.” Volgens hem spannen de huidige machthebber Shehbaz Sharif en de in Pakistan machtige legertop samen tegen hem. Ook meerdere vooraanstaande partijgenoten van Khan werden de afgelopen tijd door het Pakistaanse gerecht in het vizier genomen.

Tegenover het Franse persbureau AFP spreekt advocaat Panjutha zijn vrees uit dat Khan zelfs na een eventuele vrijlating vrijwel meteen opnieuw zal worden gearresteerd, zoals bij meerdere van zijn partijgenoten het geval was. Daarom werd een afzonderlijk verzoek — een zogeheten blanket bail — ingediend bij de rechtbank, die een nieuwe arrestatie door de Pakistaanse autoriteiten gelinkt aan de andere klachten zal moet voorkomen.

Welkom in Pakistan, waar kritiek op de blasfemiewet zelf al heiligschennis is

India vergoddelijkt de koe, Pakistan alles wat samenhangt met de islam. In beide landen kunnen meutes uit het niets ontploffen en het ‘recht’ in eigen hand nemen tegen vermeende overtreders van religieuze taboes. Individualistisch ingestelde heiligheidsfetisjisten kunnen zich ontwikkelen tot moordende ‘eenzame wolven’.

Pakistan voerde een wet tegen blasfemie in, opgetuigd met doodstraf en levenslang. Het gedrocht moet, zo heet het vroom, voorkomen dat mensen op eigen houtje ‘heiligschenners’ om zeep helpen. Geholpen heeft die onwet: van de wal in de sloot. Lynchpartijen komen nog steeds voor. De wet treft met name religieuze minderheden en wordt benut om vetes te beslechten via valse aanklachten. Ook bestaat de neiging om de blasfemiewet zelf heilig te verklaren, zodat kritiek erop eveneens blasfemie wordt.

Die indruk is versterkt na de recente arrestatie van een sjiitische imam in Kashmir. Hij leidde een protestbijeenkomst tegen een verscherping van de wet, die vooral zijn geloofsgenoten raakt. De man Gods zou een moslimvorst uit de zevende eeuw hebben gekrenkt. Maar zijn echte ‘misdrijf’ was zijn aanval op de blasfemiewet.

Onvergeeflijk

In het Pakistaanse lynching- en liquidatiecircuit geldt kritiek op de blasfemiewet al langer als onvergeeflijke heiligschennis. Dat werd in 2011 de gouverneur van de provincie Punjab, Salmaan Taseer, noodlottig. Hij kwam op voor de christelijke boerenvrouw Asia Bibi, die wegens ‘belediging van Mohammed’ ter dood was veroordeeld. Taseer, zelf moslim, noemde de blasfemiewet een onding. Reden voor zijn lijfwacht, de commando Mumtaz Qadri, om 28 schoten op hem af te vuren, in de hoofdstad Islamabad, in een chique buurt vol winkels en luxe-horeca.

Qadri’s proces was even schokkend als de moord zelf. Het liet zien hoe het heiligheids-fetisjisme ook hoogopgeleide mensen in zijn greep hield. In 2015 diende Qadri’s hoger beroep tegen het doodvonnis van een lagere rechtbank. Zijn advocaat was een topjurist, voormalig president van het hooggerechtshof in de metropool Lahore. Geen juridische kleuter dus.

De rechter vroeg hem of hij ook kritiek op de blasfemiewet zelf zag als heiligschennis. Een doorsnee burger zou een blasfemist niet ontzien, meende de raadsman: “Ik weet zeker dat Salman Rushdie hier gedood zou worden”. De plegers van de aanslag op het Franse tijdschrift Charlie Hebdo noemde hij ‘mijn helden’. Bij dat bloedbad in Parijs, januari 2015, kwamen twaalf mensen om. De twee schutters hadden zich gestoord aan Mohammed-cartoons.

Pa koos voor het paradijs

Volgens de rechter mocht Qadri de gouverneur niet doden, omdat er een blasfemiewet was. Hij had aangifte moeten doen en de zaak moeten overlaten aan de bevoegde instanties. Het klonk alsof hij zonder die wet de moord wel had mogen plegen.

Qadri is op de schrikkeldag 29 februari 2016 opgehangen in Rawalpindi. Hij was dertig jaar oud en had één zoon. Die moest vaderloos verder, omdat pa koos voor het paradijs. De moordenaar muteerde tot een heilige. Honderdduizend mensen woonden zijn begrafenis bij, in Rawalpindi. In Islamabad bouwden bewonderaars, nog voor zijn executie, een naar hem vernoemd godshuis.

Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan summoned in alleged ‘un-Islamic’ marriage to Bushra Bibi

Imran Khan allegedly married to his third wife during the time of her ‘Iddat’ - a time period of waiting for a woman before marrying someone else after divorce.

A local court in Islamabad on Thursday summoned former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on September 25 in a case related to his alleged ‘un-Islamic’ marriage with Bushra Bibi, Pakistan-based The Express Tribune reported citing Express News.

Civil Judge Qudratullah in an order issued to the Superintendent Attock Jail directed the latter to ensure that Imran Khan is presented before the court, The Express Tribune reported. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has been imprisoned in jail after being convicted in the Toshakhana case.

He was arrested from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore on August 5. During the hearing, the judge will examine the arguments of the PTI chairman's lawyer challenging the court's jurisdiction in hearing the said case. The judge asked Imran Khan's counsel to prepare arguments after he sought time from the court.

Imran Khan is facing charges of allegedly getting married to his third wife during the time of her Iddat, the report said. Iddat is an Islamic terminology that is considered to be a specified time period of waiting for a woman before marrying someone else after getting divorced or after her husband's death.

Earlier in July, the PTI chairman challenged a trial court’s decision to accept a petition seeking criminal proceedings against him and his wife for cohabiting after their first nikah that allegedly took place during her Iddat period, according to The Express Tribune report.

On July 18, a judicial magistrate in Islamabad, Qudratullah issued a nine-page detailed judgement stating that the petition filed against Imran Khan related to his ‘illegal’ marriage was admissible, The Express Tribune reported. The judge also directed Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to appear in his court.

On July 14, Islamabad Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Azam Khan sent the case to the judicial magistrate. He also dismissed another civil court’s decision declaring the plea challenging the legality of the marriage inadmissible.

In his petition, the former Pakistan PM said that the allegations mentioned in the private complaint do not constitute an offence within the ambit of Section 496 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
It further stated, “Thus continuation of the trial would amount to the abuse of the process of law."

Een zelfmoordterrorist heeft vrijdag een bom laten afgaan bij een religieuze bijeenkomst in de Pakistaanse provincie Balochistan. Er zijn zeker 54 doden en meer dan 70 gewonden. De toestand van meerdere gewonden is kritiek.

De bom ontplofte vlakbij een moskee in Mastung waar mensen bijeenkwamen ter ere van de verjaardag van de profeet Mohammed. Honderden gelovigen waren volgens de lokale autoriteiten naar buiten gekomen om deel te nemen aan een processie. Zij behoren tot de islamitische Barelvi-sekte, die geregeld wordt aangevallen door extremisten van Islamitische Staat (IS). De bomaanslag is niet opgeëist.

De slachtoffers zijn overgebracht naar verschillende ziekenhuizen, waar de noodtoestand is uitgeroepen en extra veiligheidsmaatregelen gelden. Een lokale regeringsfunctionaris roept mensen op bloed te doneren voor de gewonden. Ook heeft hij drie dagen van rouw afgekondigd. Onder de doden is een hoge politiefunctionaris.

Uren na de aanval vond een explosie plaats in een moskee in de noordwestelijke provincie Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Twee mensen zijn daar om het leven gekomen. De lokale nieuwszender Geo News meldde dat na het instorten van het dak dertig tot veertig mensen onder het puin vast kwamen te zitten. Er zouden tientallen gewonden zijn.

In Pakistan vinden de laatste tijd steeds meer aanvallen plaats en die worden opgeëist door militante groepen in het westen van het land. Zo vielen in juli meer dan 40 doden bij een bomaanslag op een bijeenkomst van een religieuze politieke partij. De Pakistaanse bevolking kiest in januari een nieuw parlement.

BANNU: In a shocking turn of events, a biology professor issued a public apology for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution, bringing to the fore the issue of growing extremism in the province and the curtailment of freedom of expression and scientific ideas.

Sher Ali, an assistant professor of biology, issued his apology on a stamp paper, highlighting the growing intolerance towards scientific and rational ideas.

The controversy surrounding Professor Sher Ali started after he organised a seminar on women's rights in Islam and the constitution. The event was a response to local protests against women leaving their homes without properly adhering to Islamic dress codes.

However, religious circles and clerics opposed the seminar, accusing Professor Sher Ali of promoting ideas that deviated from Islamic teachings.

As a result of the criticisms, the professor had previously expressed frustration over being attacked for doing his duty and teaching about Darwin's theory of evolution.

He argued that his teaching materials followed the curriculum set by the education board and that if the scholars had any issues, they should take legal action instead.

The incident has sparked concerns about the curtailment of intellectual discourse and the restriction of academic freedom in the region.

Massaal vertrek van Afghanen uit Pakistan om dreigende uitzetting

ISLAMABAD - Meer dan 100.000 Afghanen hebben Pakistan verlaten en minstens 10.000 anderen zijn dinsdag naar grensovergangen getrokken vanwege een door de Pakistaanse regering gestelde deadline. Die dreigt alle illegale Afghanen vanaf 1 november uit te zetten naar Afghanistan, een groep die volgens Islamabad uit zo’n 1,7 miljoen personen bestaat.

Afghaanse vluchtelingen wachten in Pakistan op bussen die hen terugbrengen naar hun thuisland.



Pakistan kondigde het plan begin oktober aan. De regering wil ongedocumenteerde Afghanen vanaf woensdag oppakken en in detentiecentra vasthouden tot hun uitzetting. Dit zou nodig zijn om de „welvaart en veiligheid” van Pakistan te beschermen. Het land heeft economische problemen en Afghanen zouden betrokken zijn geweest bij militante aanvallen in Pakistan.

Miljoenen Afghanen zijn de afgelopen decennia naar het buurland gevlucht wegens conflicten in eigen land. Van de ruim 4 miljoen Afghanen in Pakistan zou bijna de helft nu moeten vertrekken. De Talibanregering in Afghanistan registreerde tussen 23 september en 22 oktober de terugkeer van zo’n 60.000 staatsburgers. Die spreekt ook van „intimidatie.” Afghanen in Islamabad en Karachi maken sinds de bekendmaking van het plan melding van arrestaties, intimidatie en afpersing. Zenders van de staatstelevisie tonen al wekenlang een countdown naar 1 november.

Het Pakistaanse plan wordt bekritiseerd door onder meer mensenrechtenorganisaties en VN-organisaties. Het VN-vluchtelingenagentschap UNHCR en de Internationale Organisatie voor Migratie (IOM) wijzen op de risico’s voor vrouwen en meisjes die terug naar Afghanistan moeten. Deze groep verliest steeds meer rechten en vrijheden onder de heerschappij van de Taliban.

In Pakistan is al weken een grote uittocht gaande. Naar schatting 1,7 miljoen Afghanen zonder geldige verblijfspapieren worden het land uit gezet. Als ze niet vrijwillig vertrekken, worden ze gearresteerd en gedeporteerd. Veel van hen wonen al decennia in het land en hebben in Afghanistan geen huis of familie om naar terug te keren.

Mohammad Isa is een van hen. Hij woont sinds tien jaar in de Pakistaanse stad Quetta met zijn vrouw en zeven kinderen, van wie de meesten in Pakistan zijn geboren. Alles bij hem thuis staat al klaar om te vertrekken. "Als het aan mij lag, zouden we blijven", zegt hij.

Isa vluchtte tien jaar geleden voor het geweld toen het Afghaanse leger met steun van NAVO-troepen tegen de Taliban vocht. Nu de Taliban aan de macht zijn, vreest Isa het geweld niet meer. Wel maakt hij zich veel zorgen om de toekomst van zijn kinderen. "Twee dochters en twee zoons gaan hier naar school. Als we nu terug naar Afghanistan gaan, is het leven van mijn kinderen verpest."

Voor meisjes en vrouwen is onder de Taliban geen middelbaar en hoger onderwijs, en vrouwen zijn van de meeste banen uitgesloten. Maar ook voor zijn zoons ziet Isa, die in Quetta nachtdiensten draait als bewaker, geen toekomst. "Hier kan ik nog wel werk vinden. Maar daar zal ik ook als dagloner niets kunnen krijgen. Er is niets. In de stad wonen is te duur. Wat moet ik daar met mijn kinderen beginnen?"

Nepdocumenten in detentiekamp
Begin oktober kondigde Pakistan aan dat alle Afghanen zonder geldige papieren voor 1 november moesten vertrekken. Mensen die vrijwillig zijn vertrokken, mochten spullen en een geldbedrag meenemen. Anderen lopen sinds 2 november het risico gearresteerd te worden en met lege handen de grens over te worden gezet.

Vlak buiten de stad Quetta ligt een detentiekamp. Journalist Hazif Ullah Sherani en cameraman Gul Zada bezochten het kamp namens de NOS en kregen kort toegang, terwijl er zo'n 200 mensen werden vastgehouden. Onder hen ook veel Afghanen die een geldig verblijfsdocument lieten zien, zoals een registratiedocument van de VN of een Afghaanse burgerkaart. Deze werden ter plekke digitaal gecheckt. "De realiteit is dat veel mensen nepdocumenten hebben laten maken, criminelen verdienen hieraan", verklaart Jan Achakzai, de interim-minister van Informatie van de provincie Balochistan.

Het detentiekamp vlak bij Quetta
Veel anderen hebben nooit verblijfspapieren gehad. Mohammad Ullah, bijvoorbeeld, die na veertig jaar uit Pakistan moet vertrekken. Hij zat bij de eerste generatie vluchtelingen, die voor het geweld na de Sovjetinvasie van 1979 vluchtte. Destijds vluchtten vijf miljoen Afghanen naar buurlanden Pakistan en Iran. "Zo zwaar als vandaag hebben we het in veertig jaar niet gehad", zegt hij vanuit het arrestatiebusje dat hem naar de grens brengt.

Ook Sher Khan en zijn vrouw, dochters en schoondochter worden gedeporteerd. Zij vluchtten twee jaar geleden, na de machtsovername door de Taliban. Waarom ze vluchtten wil hij niet zeggen, nu hij na aankomst door de Taliban geregistreerd zal worden. "We hebben destijds al onze spullen verkocht om in Pakistan opnieuw te beginnen. Dus we hebben daar geen huis en geen geld."

Honderdduizenden vluchtelingen
Zo'n 600.000 Afghanen vluchtten na de machtsovername door de Taliban naar Pakistan. Geen van hen kreeg geldige verblijfspapieren en van de meesten is het visum verlopen. De mensen die nu terugkeren en gedeporteerd worden zijn voornamelijk arm en lager opgeleid. Zo'n 25.000 Afghanen die in Pakistan op een visum voor de VS wachten, onder hen mensenrechtenactivisten en journalisten, worden volgens de autoriteiten niet gedeporteerd.

Bij het westelijke grensplaatsje Chaman, 2,5 uur rijden van Quetta, staat elke dag een lange rij vrachtwagens vol gezinnen en hun spullen te wachten om over te steken. Er is een tentenkamp opgezet, waar mensen kunnen logeren tot ze kunnen oversteken. Diegenen die worden gedeporteerd moeten eerst geregistreerd worden. Ook worden er medische checks gedaan.

Wie eenmaal terug in Afghanistan is, kan niet meer zomaar terugkomen. Sinds 1 november moeten alle Afghanen die naar Pakistan willen een paspoort en visum hebben. Tot dan toe was het mogelijk om met een lokale identiteitskaart over en weer te gaan en dit was heel gebruikelijk voor handel en kort familiebezoek.

Nu er dagelijks duizenden mensen binnenkomen, zowel bij Chaman als de noordelijke Torkham-grens, worstelen de Taliban met de opvang. Hulporganisaties rapporteren een gebrek aan voedsel, water, sanitaire voorzieningen, tenten en dekens.

Ook Mohammad Isa weet dat dit hem en zijn gezin te wachten staat. "Ik heb geen huis en zal in een tent moeten wonen. In een vluchtelingenkamp is geen school. Het leven zal er ellendig zijn, in de koude winter."

Wat is de kans dat je in Pakistan door een tijger wordt opgegeten? Nul, want er zijn geen tijgers.

Verzorgers van dierentuin vinden deels opgegeten lichaam terug in tijgerkooi

In Pakistan heeft een dierentuin de deuren moeten sluiten nadat een man in het verblijf van de tijgers belandde en verscheurd werd door de dieren.

Het lichaam werd woensdagochtend aangetroffen door werknemers van de dierentuin van Bahawalpur, in de provincie Punjab, nadat een van hen een schoen had opgemerkt in de bek van een tijger. „Dat gebeurde tijdens het schoonmaken van het verblijf van de dieren”, laat een plaatselijke functionaris weten aan de Pakistaanse nieuwszender Geo News.

„De dierentuin werd onmiddellijk gesloten en een onderzoek werd opgestart om na te gaan hoe het slachtoffer daar terecht is gekomen”, zegt medewerker Syed Ali Usman Bukhari. Vermoedelijk gebeurde dat in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag.

Het slachtoffer werd op basis van zijn vingerafdrukken geïdentificeerd als Muhammad Bilal, een inwoner van de stad Lahore, zo’n 420 kilometer verderop. Uit de autopsie op zijn verscheurde lichaam blijkt dat hij zichzelf voor zijn dood nog had verweerd. Er werden vooral zware verwondingen vastgesteld aan zijn onderste ledematen, meldt Samaa TV.
