1 dead, another injured in Pakistan factory blast

LAHORE, Pakistan

One person was killed and another injured in an explosion at a factory in northeastern Pakistan on Thursday.
A boiler blew up at a beverage factory on Multan Road in Lahore, capital of the province of Punjab, an official said.

Videos circulating on social media showed smoke rising from the factory before a huge explosion sends a cloud of fire high into the sky.
The blast caused extensive damage at the factory and also nearby buildings, according to Deeba Shahnaz, spokesperson for the provincial rescue service.

There were fears that casualties could be higher since the factory is located in a residential locality, but the official said the area was not crowded at the time of the explosion.

“One person died on the spot and another one is in hospital with 50% burns over his body,” she said.

Firefighters managed to douse the blaze and a cooling process has started, she added.

Pakistan has a history of industrial accidents due to poor infrastructure and lack of safety standards, with many factories set up in residential areas all over the country.

The incident comes less than two months after 15 people were killed and several injured when a massive fire swept through a chemical factory in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi.

Pakistan: Islamists halt march after deal with government

The hard-line TLP party has agreed to suspend a three-day-long march after the government agreed to drop charges against its leader and consider expelling the French ambassador over caricatures of Prophet Muhammad.

The Pakistani government made the deal as part of efforts to defuse a violent protest

The radical Tehreek-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party on Sunday agreed to suspend its march from Lahore toward the capital Islamabad after the government said it would drop pending charges against the party's leader and consider the expulsion of the French ambassador.

"The issue of expelling the French ambassador will be taken to parliament for debate," Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said, adding that the government would drop charges against TLP chief Saad Rizvi and release those arrested at protests in support of Rizvi.

In return, the TLP agreed to stop the march but said supporters would continue a sit-in at the town of Muridke — near Lahore — until the Pakistani government delivers its promises. It was unclear when Rivzi would be released.

Deadly clashes erupt

At least two policemen have died in clashes in Lahore since Friday, authorities said, adding that at least a dozen officers were injured and several police vehicles were torched.
Thousands of TLP supporters have blocked roads and fired projectiles.
TLP spokesperson Saddam Bukhari said "at least seven" of its supporters died in the clashes, and that hundreds more were injured in clashes with police.

Ahmed said the government was unaware of any deaths of TLP supporters.

Who is the TLP?

Rizvi was arrested in April during demonstrations against the publication in France of caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad. Pakistan refused to expel the French ambassador and instead banned the TLP under the country's anti-terrorism laws.

Rizvi had been detained on a charge of inciting people to assemble unlawfully.

Provincial Law Minister Raja Basharat told The Associated Press that under the agreement, Punjab will withdraw charges against Rizvi and release all those detained during the protest march by Tuesday.

Basharat also said the agreement stipulates that the federal government will honor a previous commitment with the TLP to address diplomatic relations with France over the publication of the caricatures.

The TLP gained prominence in Pakistan's 2018 elections, vowing to defend the country's blasphemy law, which calls for the death penalty for anyone who insults Islam.

An Islamic Emirate in Pakistan: Sooner than later?

It is not that an extremist religious outfit, created and used, by the Pakistan establishment brought the entire State of Pakistan on its knees through its more than one mobilization. The Tehreek e- Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), Frankenstein created by the Pak establishment proved too hot for its creators.

Religion and politics blended in the thickets of Pakistan society. Middle, lower-middle, and poor citizenry of this impoverished nation of more than 22 billion mouths has been often fed with the legit or illegit dreams of ‘Jannat’, ‘jihad’, ‘freely available virgins’ rather than the diet of humanity and prosperity. Mullahs were often extremely poor before the entry of 70’s petrol dollars in the entire sub-continent. Their livelihood was dependent on the local mosque collections by the followers. The situation has changed of late. These Mullahs became affluent now because billions of US dollars began flowing in the 80’s period through Pakistan to groom ‘mujahids’ for a jihad against the Soviets.

A large part of these American dollars went into the coffers of these Mullahs to run their newly created jihadi workshops. The dictator of Pakistan became a white knight overnight in the eyes of the West. But, he was clever to know that his Islamic Emirate dream will become reality one day in Pakistan. He sowed the seeds and now the crop is ready for the bloody harvest.

Present day mullah community in Pakistan is not only affluent with several of their children sired through more than one wife and are undergoing western education in Europe, the UK, Canada, Australia and the US. However, the façade of austerity and piety is maintained for poor lot who hope that ‘Allah’ will help them in getting heat in the hearth in current depreciating currency and exorbitant inflationary pressure. The current dispensation of Imran Khan is popularly known as allegedly ‘selected’ government! Selected by the powerful Pakistan establishment which is turning regressive and pretending to be more religious than others. One can often see the PM of Pakistan often carrying rosary in hands in every optical opportunity and unabashedly declaring his love for the prophet!! This is not to fool who knows his background but the blindly religious poor peasantry of Pakistan.

The religious sects of ‘Deobandi’ and ‘Barelvi’ are major groups among the population of Pakistan ‘Sunni’ following with some more but in minority. Afghan Taliban belong to the Deobandi sect and also Jamat Islami and Tahreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Deobandi influence is largely among the Pashtun tribes and some Punjabis. Its influence is mostly limited to the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa (KPK) and its borderland in Punjab and Balochistan. However, Barelvi influence is pervasive in the thickly populated province of Punjab and the province of Sind. Almost 60-70% of the Pakistan army, and its paramilitary recruitment is from Punjab province and the majority of recruits coming from Barelvi influence.

With this backdrop, why this recent violence perpetrated by TLP was not responded to by the writ of the state? Writ of the state will take a back seat if the Pakistan establishment will face Barelvi agitation. The reason is obvious, Pakistan security forces will not mind killing and firing on Sindhis or Baloch or even Pashtuns, but would be the last one to take arms up on Barelvi Punjabi agitators.

TLP is the creation of the Pakistan army to keep tabs on any political dispensation and succeeded tremendously on every occasion. Pakistan state is passing through an extreme economic phase because of international pressures on its economy from various important quarters. Pakistan establishment knows full well that armed take over is out of the question now like before due to amendment in the constitution and US legislations for aids. Pakistan army can only maintain control on entire system if these Mullahs can become top temporal leaders like what happened when the Iran revolution culminated with Mullahs occupying topmost position and still kept some kind of democracy. Army is all-pervasive in Iran and it is same in Pakistan. Mullah community will give façade of Islam and keep this community and its followers happy. It appears now slowly clear that Pakistan’s democracy farce will come to end sooner than later. It will be now watched how TTP will fight it out for its own domain in KPK and tribal belt where Barelvi sect is an anathema.

Pakistan snow: Hundreds rescued from vehicles in deadly blizzard

A tourist trapped in her car for hours by unprecedented snowfall in Pakistan has described how she "saw death" in front of her as she waited for help.

Samina was in one of thousands who rushed to view the winter snowfall in the hilltop town of Murree.

But a blizzard on Friday had felled trees and blocked roads in and out of the town just north of the capital.

Around 1,000 vehicles became stranded, and at least 22 people died, including two large families.

Samina told the BBC she had left her home at 16:00 local time to travel to Murree, but soon found herself among those trapped in the snow. Pictures and videos posted on social media showed stranded cars bumper to bumper, with snow piled on their roofs.

"I could see death in front of me," Samina said. "It was like there were snow peaks built around our car... I can't explain in words what I was going through.
"We were praying God may help us and we shouldn't be perished in a snowstorm."

According to Tariq Ullah, an official in the nearby town of Nathiagali, the blizzard dumped up to 1.5m (5ft) of snow within just a few hours.
"It was unprecedented," he told AFP news agency. "There were strong winds, uprooted trees, avalanches. People around were terrified."

Samina was finally rescued at 10:00 the next morning, spending the night in one of the shelters set up in the resort town, which sits at 2,300 metres (7,500 feet) above sea level.

But among those who died were 10 children, emergency services said, as well as two families of five and eight.
Authorities said eight people froze to death, while asphyxiation after inhaling fumes while trying to keep warm in their vehicles has been given as a possible reason for the others.

Questions are now being asked about how this was allowed to happen.
"We didn't get any type of alert from society, from the government, from Google, from the news, from the weather," Duaa Kashif Ali, a tourist from Islamabad, told AFP.

She and 13 other family members and friends abandoned their cars and walked about a mile (1.5km) to a guesthouse where they found shelter.

According to the BBC's Farhat Javed - who is in Murree - there is space for about 5,000 cars in the town. However on Friday, 100,000 visitors had been allowed to enter, causing a massive traffic jam as they struggled through the deep snow.

Vehicles were abandoned on the roads, and emergency workers - who were first made aware of the problem on Friday morning - told the BBC their own response was slowed by the traffic jams.

The Punjab provincial government said there would be a full investigation into whether there was a failure to act on severe weather warnings.
"A high-level inquiry will be launched and if there is any kind of negligence, then action will be taken against all those involved," spokesman Hasaan Khawar said.

But this will not happen before the roads to Murree - which was built by the British in the 19th Century as a medical base for its colonial troops - are cleared.

Pakistan announces ‘Solidarity Day’ to support Indian Muslim women

The Pakistan government has announced that it will observe a solidarity day on Friday, February 11 to support Indian Muslim women who face hatred on the basis of religion.

The announcement comes a day after a Muslim young student in the state of Karnataka stood ground to saffron scarf-wearing men who heckled her in her college.

Karnataka government has closed schools and colleges across the state for three days and imposed a two week ban on gatherings and protests near them in Bengaluru.

Hijab-wearing student Muskan has been praised across borders for responding “boldly” to the mob by standing her ground and shouting “Allahu Akbar” in response to chants of “Jai Shri Ram.”

Solidarity Day

A video of Muskan responding to heckling and the chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ by a large groups of men with saffron scarves, went viral on Tuesday and was shared widely in Pakistan.

On Wednesday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Religious Harmony Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi condemned the heckling and said that after the ban on cow slaughter, Friday prayer gatherings and the demolition of mosques, it has now come to the hijab of Muslim women in India. The international community must take notice, he said.

“One daughter bravely challenged the violent mob and she made proud all the Muslims,” he said.

Ashrafi said Pakistan will observe Solidarity Day on Friday to support Muskan’s bravery and Indian Muslim women.

Educational institutes closed in Karnataka

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai has closed schools and colleges for three days across the state.

Authorities in state capital Bengaluru have imposed a two week ban on gatherings, and protests within 200-meter radius from the gates of schools and colleges.

All educational institutes in the state will stay closed for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The directives came after the protests over hijab row turned violent with incidents of stone-pelting.

The Karnataka High Court was hearing a petition filed by two women students from Udupi’s pre-university government college against the state government’s directive prohibiting them to attend classes wearing a hijab. It has now sent the matter to a larger bench.

The Karnataka Cabinet met on Wednesday to discuss the situation and decided to wait for the high court’s verdict on the row.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh has accused Muskan of provoking the saffron scarf-wearing men.

“They did not want to gherao the girl. but when she was shouting… when she was shouting Allah-hu-Akbar, there was not a single student around her. Why she provoked saying Allah-hu-Akbar in a college campus?” NDTV quoted Nagesh as saying.

On Tuesday, Muskan told NDTV and India Today that she had gone to submit her assignment when she found young men standing outside her college. They asked her to remove her burka before entering college.

The presence of Hindutva men, as an NDTV reporter would describe them, was linked to an ongoing controversy in Karnataka. After six college students refused to stop wearing hijabs and, consequently, were stopped from attending classes at the Government Girls PU college in Udupi, there were pro-hijab protests, which were met with a ban on hijab at several other colleges in the state earlier this month.

Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Inter-faith Harmony Noor-ul-Haq Qadri on Sunday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan, requesting to put a ban on game shows during the month of Ramadan.

In a letter shared by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony on Twitter, Noor-ul-Haq mentioned six guiding principles of Ramadan broadcasting on the complaints issued by the public.

The letter said that the promotion of religious and professional harmony during the holy month should be the top priority of the Ramadan broadcast. It further said that “controversial issues and professional topics should be avoided.”

The letter also stated that the show hosts should be equipped with the necessary knowledge, adding that the dress code of the hosts and guests should be in accordance with the holy month.

It further said that “respect for holy figures and adherents of different sects should be kept in mind.” Moreover, broadcasting game shows and frivolous programmes during Sehr and Iftar should be avoided.

It added that immoral and inappropriate advertisements should be banned during the month.

The letter also stated that the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) should issue appropriate instructions to TV channels in this regard.

Religion-fuelled mobs on the rise again in Pakistan

Last month, a man named Muhammad Mushtaq was accused of burning pages of the Quran inside a mosque in central Pakistan. A mob armed with sticks, bricks and axes gathered at the mosque and dragged him out.

Mushtaq was tortured for hours and eventually killed, his body hung from a tree. A handful of police officers were among those who watched.

The Feb 12 killing in the district of Khanewal was denounced across Pakistan. Prime Minister Imran Khan said the government had “zero tolerance” for such mob violence and promised that the police officers would be punished.

But lynching over offences to Islam, real or imagined, are far from new in Pakistan, where blasphemy is punishable by death. Rights activists say lynch mobs exploit anti-blasphemy laws to take matters into their own hands.

In recent years these episodes have risen to an alarming level, with increasing cases of fatal violence.

Critics and rights activists say that vows like those made by the prime minister are mere lip service and that Khan’s government, much like his predecessors, has not taken any practical steps to curb violence.

Instances of mob violence, and state-enforced criminal blasphemy cases, are more frequent in Pakistan than anywhere else, according to a report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.

“The lack of political will and commitment has always stood as the biggest obstacle to prevent the abuse, misuse, and exploitation of blasphemy laws,” said Tahira Abdullah, a rights activist based in Islamabad.

Khan’s government is no different from its predecessors in promising to tackle the menace of religious violence, she said. But “it is too cowardly to confront” influential religious parties in parliament, Abdullah said, “and the rampaging militant extremist groups outside parliament.”

Blasphemy allegations have led to the vandalizing of Hindu temples and neighborhoods, the burning of police stations by angry mobs, the lynching of a student on a university campus and the killing of a provincial governor by his own security guard. After Musthaq’s killing, a senior police official told a parliamentary committee that 90% of those involved in blasphemy violence are between the ages of 18 and 30.
Spoiler! :
Just two months ago, a Sri Lankan, Priyantha Diyawadanage, was lynched by workers he oversaw in a factory in the eastern city of Sialkot. Diyawadanage was accused of tearing off stickers with religious inscriptions from the factory walls. He was tortured for hours by an enraged mob before his body was thrown off the factory’s rooftop, beaten and set on fire.

In 2021, at least 84 people faced blasphemy accusations in courts and from angry street mobs, according to the Centre for Social Justice, a Lahore-based minority rights group. Three people, including Diyawadanage, were killed by a mob over such allegations, it noted.

In August, a mob in the Rahimyar Khan district, also in Punjab province, damaged statues and burned down a Hindu temple’s main door after a court released an 8-year-old Hindu boy on bail. He had been charged with blasphemy for allegedly urinating in the library of a madrasa.

Defense lawyers are also at risk. In 2014 gunmen murdered a Pakistani lawyer, Rashid Rehman, in Multan city for defending Junaid Hafeez, an academic charged with making derogatory comments about the Prophet Muhammad. Hafeez had been in prison, unable to find a lawyer, before Rehman agreed to take up his case.

In 2011, two politicians were murdered in similar episodes. Salman Taseer, then a provincial governor, was killed by a bodyguard after expressing opposition to blasphemy laws. Shahbaz Bhatti, a federal minister, was murdered for opposing the death sentence imposed on Asia Bibi, a Christian convicted of verbally insulting the Prophet Muhammad. Though Bibi was acquitted in 2019, she fled Pakistan and her lawyer has received death threats.

“The increasing theocratisation of Pakistan and rising militant extremism makes it very difficult for lawyers to defend alleged blasphemers,” Abdullah said. “It takes a great deal of personal courage and professional integrity to withstand huge overt pressure and threats.”

Law enforcement agencies are not trained, or equipped to handle, frenzied vigilante mobs, and find themselves overwhelmed, Abdullah noted.

Pakistan inherited 19th-century British laws outlining punishments for offenses related to blasphemy. But the government revamped these laws in the 1980s, introducing new clauses adding severe penalties and even a death sentence for anyone who insults Islam.

Iran, Brunei and Mauritania are the other three countries that impose the death penalty for insulting religion.

“Since the death penalty, a mandatory punishment for blasphemy, was made a law, there have been several bouts of religion-based violence in Pakistan,” said Peter Jacob, executive director of the Centre for Social Justice.

While no one has ever been executed for the offense, violence against alleged blasphemers is hardly unusual.

Rights activists link the current spike in blasphemy-related violence to the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, an emerging radical religious party. And Islamist parties and militant groups in Pakistan have been emboldened by the Taliban’s coming to power in neighbouring Afghanistan last year.

“The government’s narrative about Islamophobia in the rest of the world” fuels the religion-based violence,
Jacob said.

“This narrative builds on anger among the youth, which becomes ready-made ammunition for sporadic but large-scale violence against anyone who is suspected of offering any disrespect to religious persons, scripture, places or articles,” he said.

Tehreek-e-Labbaik, the radical religious party, first came to prominence as an organised force when it demonstrated for the release of Mumtaz Qadri, the police bodyguard who fatally shot Taseer in 2011. Qadri was eventually sentenced to death and hanged in 2016. Since then, it has shaped itself into a political party, contesting elections and continuing to unsettle governments.

In April last year, Tehreek-e-Labbaik organized violent, countrywide protests demanding the expulsion of the French ambassador after President Emmanuel Macron of France eulogized a French teacher murdered for showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in a classroom.

The Pakistani Taliban have also announced support for anti-blasphemy campaigns and promoted armed struggle to protect the honour of Islam.

Posters offering a reward of some $56,000 to kill Faraz Pervaiz, a Pakistani Christian, for posting anti-Islamic content on social media often appear in anti-blasphemy protests in the country.

Pervaiz, 34, now living in self-exile in Thailand, said that he started speaking out for the rights of non-Muslim communities on social media after a Muslim mob attacked a Christian neighbourhood in Lahore in 2013, torching more than 150 houses and two churches following reports that a Christian sanitation worker had blasphemed the Prophet Muhammad.

“Even in Thailand, I feel insecure,” he said after a Pakistani Muslim refugee shared one of his videos and his location on social media. Pervaiz left the country in 2014 after receiving threats, he said.

Journalists in Pakistan have refrained from reporting on blasphemy cases since the rise of the extremist parties and their growing influence.

“Covering the issue of blasphemy as a journalist, and especially for the Urdu-language press, can either get you killed, or you’ll be fired for jeopardizing the survival of the organization you work for,” said Razeshta Sethna, a journalist and author of a recent report on the stifling media environment in the country.

Moslimleraressen Pakistan onthoofden collega

Pakistan blijft leven in chaos.

Pakistan: Militants attack US consulate, ANP rally; 51 killed

PESHAWAR/TIMERGARA: Grenade and suicide attacks on the US Consulate in Peshawar and on a rally of the Awami National Party in Timergara killed 51 people and injured over 120 others on Monday.

Government and security officials said a squad of at least five suicide bombers armed with rocket-propelled grenades, guns and car bombs struck the outer security parameter of the heavily-guarded US Consulate from the main T-junction connecting the city with the cantonment and the highway to Afghanistan.

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack.

"It was a well-coordinated and well-planned attack," a senior intelligence official told Dawn.

The suicide bombers came in a double-cabin pick-up, two intelligence and a senior government officials said. The first bomber walked towards the outer security post and fired from his automatic assault rifle. He later blew himself up near an armoured personnel carrier.

They said that three other bombers followed closely in tow and one of them fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the APC. The RPG exploded with a big bang but missed the target.

"The attackers used Russian-made RPG-7. It is the most effective anti-tank explosive device. Had it hit the APC, it would have dug a hole in it," a senior official of the Bomb Disposal Squad said.

The officials said that it was not clear whether security guards deployed inside and outside the US Consulate engaged the attackers. But as the three bombers moved forward, the vehicle carrying them exploded, setting off a huge plume of smoke into the sky.

The security officials said they believed that the three bombers had died because of the explosion near the checkpost.

An intelligence official said the forensic evidence suggested that a suicide bomber inside the vehicle had set off the bomb prematurely which killed his three associates. Two of the bombers still had live suicide jackets on them and BDS personnel later untangled wires and prima-cords and defused the bombs.

"Their bodies were badly burnt and beyond recognition. They couldn't get the time to pull the cords," the official said.

The explosion left a seven-feet-long and four-feet-wide crater, Sahfqat Malik, head of the DBS, told Dawn. He said that high-quality TNT explosives used in the attack weighed 80-100kg. He said the suicide jackets bore the tell-tale signs of TTP's involvement, particularly its outfit in the Orakzai tribal region.

The dead included one police constable and two security guards of the Frontier Constabulary. Most of the people killed or wounded were civilians.

No-one inside the consulate was hurt and there was no major damage to the consulate building. The explosions smashed wind-shields of several cars parked inside the consulate.

The three, relatively smaller blasts, were triggered by BDS personnel in order to defuse the explosives, an official said.

He said that an intelligence agency had forewarned the US Consulate of a possible attack. It was not clear whether the consulate had heeded the warning and taken extra security measures, but officials said that senior US diplomats were not in the office at the time of attack.

TTP spokesman Azam Tariq called reporters in Miramshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan, and said the attack was a reaction to military operations and drone attacks in the tribal region. "We will continue attacks on the Americans in Pakistan and Afghanistan," he added.

ANP Rally

Forty-five people were killed and over 100 others injured when a suicide bomber set off explosives strapped to his body at a rally organised by the ANP to celebrate the renaming of NWFP in Timergara, about 170km from Peshawar.

According to eyewitnesses, the bomber in his early 20s blew himself up when a constable tried to stop him from proceeding to the centre-stage of the function.

ANP's Lower Dir president Haji Bahadar Khan was delivering his speech at the 'Jashn-i-Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa' rally when the blast took place. Over 500 ANP leaders and activists were attending the celebration.

A journalist and seven policemen were among the injured. They were taken to the DHQ Hospital in Timergara. Thirty-seven critically injured people were later airlifted to Peshawar.

The blast caused panic and fear and security forces cordoned off the area.

People killed in the blast were identified as Mohammad Yunas, Sher Zamin Khan, Azizur Rehman, Ilyas, Sher Rahim, Hayat Mohammad, Ibrar Ahmad, Fazal Rabi, Mohammad Riaz, Rahim Shah, Saeedullah, Sarfaraz, Mehmood Jan, Mohammad Riaz, Bahadar Khan, Nawab Khan, Nisar, Sultan Zeb, Mohammad, Qaisar, Akbar, Ihsanullah, Sarwar Khan, Zahid, Fateh Noor, Salim, Waheed Gul, Farman, Abdul Wahid, Niaz Mohammad, Khan Wali, Hanif, Samiur Rahman, Nazir Khan, Mian Rahim, Abdul Mateen, Mohammad Roz Khan, Mohammad Ali, Iftikhar, Abdullah, Asad Badshah, Noor Ali Shah, Mohammad Khan, Muhtaram Zeb and police constable Rahimul Haq.

Two legs believed to be of the bomber were brought to the hospital.

Karimullah, one of the speakers at the function, told Dawn that Haji Bahadar Khan was delivering his speech when the police constable shouted to warn people about the presence of the suicide bomber. He said that party leaders remained unhurt, but a number of workers had been killed.

The district and hospital administration declared an emergency and sealed all routes leading to the Timergara hospital.

Malakand region DIG Qazi Jamil, Dir Lower DCO Ghulam Mohammad, DPO Mumtaz Zarin and Dir Scouts' officers visited the hospital.

The DIG told Dawn that the back of militants had been broken and they were now targeting innocent people at public gatherings.

DHQ hospital's medical superintendent Dr Muhammad Wakil told Dawn that 36 bodies had been brought to the hospital and the number of the injured was over 80.

The injured ANP workers criticised what they called negligence of police and security personnel deployed at the function and termed the incident a security lapse.

A handful of militants are reported to be still active in violence-ravaged Maidan. They blew up two government schools in the area last week.

AFP adds: Police said two car bombs exploded - one at a checkpoint in Peshawar, about 50 metres from the US Consulate, and the other laden with about 100kg of explosives close to the consulate gate, followed by an exchange of fire.

The security barrier near the consulate gate was damaged, and shells from rocket-propelled grenades and hand-grenades were left lying in the area, which was sealed off by police and army, witnesses said.

Although the precise number of assailants was unclear, senior NWFP minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour said two attackers fled during the crossfir

Imran Khan: Pakistan court rules no-confidence vote block is illegal

Former cricket star Mr Khan said he "will continue to fight till the last ball"

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan could face removal from office this weekend, after the country's top court ruled his move to block a no-confidence vote was unconstitutional.

Last Sunday, Mr Khan's ruling party blocked a no-confidence vote which he was widely expected to lose.

His government then dissolved parliament and called a snap election.

Furious opposition members launched an appeal with the Supreme Court to decide the legality of the blocked vote.
The Supreme Court said in a ruling late on Thursday that the vote should go ahead.
In response to this, Mr Khan announced that he had called a cabinet meeting and would address the nation on Friday evening.
"My message to the nation is that I have always fought for Pakistan and will continue to fight till the last ball," he wrote in a Twitter post.

What was the reaction to the ruling?

News of the court's decision was met with cheers of jubilation on Thursday night by dozens of opposition members, who were gathered outside the court.

The leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif, told local news outlets that the court had "definitely fulfilled the people's expectations".

But furious supporters of Mr Khan chanted anti-American slogans in reply, as police in riot gear separated the two sides.
I
The Supreme Court has now ordered parliament to reconvene on Saturday to proceed with the vote, which is expected to go against Mr Khan.

It is unclear what other options Mr Khan can exercise to avoid that outcome, unless he and his MPs decide to submit resignation en masse in an attempt to avoid the humiliation of a defeat, says BBC Urdu reporter Abid Hussain.
He says the united opposition, buoyed by the unanimous verdict, has declared it a win for Pakistan's democracy, even though there have been rumours that they had quiet support from country's powerful military.

In the event Mr Khan is ousted from power, the opposition parties are expected to appoint a new prime minister who can hold power until October 2023, when a new election is scheduled to be held.

How did events unfold?

In the days leading up to the vote, Mr Khan claimed without evidence that the political opposition was in a conspiracy with the US to remove him because of his friendly relations with Russia and China. Washington has strongly denied his claim.

On Sunday, opposition lawmakers tabled the no-confidence motion to parliament.
But parliament's deputy speaker Qasim Suri - who also comes from Mr Khan's political party - blocked the vote on grounds of this "foreign interference", effectively foiling any attempt to oust Mr Khan from power.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court found that the move to block the vote was illegal, saying it was "contrary to the constitution and the law and had no legal effect".

The court also ruled that Mr Khan's decision to dissolve parliament was invalid. A dissolution of parliament would have mandated snap general elections to be held within 90 days, which Pakistan's electoral commission had declared as not possible.

What do we know about Imran Khan?

Mr Khan, a former star cricketer turned politician, swept into office in 2018 on a platform to tackle corruption and cronyism.
While he still has many supporters, he has lost some popular favour amid a rise in living costs, ballooning foreign debt and other scandals.
Analysts also say that Mr Khan may have lost support from the military, a crucial backer of any Pakistan leader.

The Supreme Court's decision marks another chapter of political turmoil in Pakistan. None of the nation's prime ministers have ever served out a full five-year term, due to various political scandals and power plays by the military in the past decades.

Military coups and removals of democratically-elected leaders have left Pakistan under direct military rule for 33 of the 75 years it has been an independent nation. However the current military leadership claims it is not involved in recent political developments.

Terrorisme in opmars

Leger in charge

Massaproces in Pakistan wegens lynchen fabrieksmanager: zes Pakistanen ter dood veroordeeld

Negen mensen kregen levenslange gevangenisstraf opgelegd.

Godslastering ligt zeer gevoelig in Pakistan.
